Why Sustainable Fashion?

From last few years we have been discussing about sustainable fashion. Can someone tell me why, just one reason, that literally can impact the decision of purchasing sustainable clothes.

I want my brand to be more sustainable. What can I do?

I have a clothing brand where I'm making shirts from recycled plastic bottles and coconut husks (for the buttons) and I know there has to be more that we can do. What are some awesome things that you've seen from other clothing brands?!

Does anyone have recommendations for cute nude shoes that will last biking through Europe?

My fiance and I were going to go abroad for a year after getting married but with Covid everything was postponed so we'll hopefully leave next year.

We're planning on starting in Paris, France, and biking 8-10 hours each weekend to the next closest city until we reach Denmark. After that we'll likely switch to trains.

I only want to have one pair of shoes for this first part of the trip so that I can carry less. So I'm not looking for sneakers but shoes that I can bike in, also walk around the city, and go to a cute restaurant in. I've tested out Everlane City loafers with long biking trips/walking around the city and they've held up great, very comfortable and stylish. I was originally going to purchase another pair for the trip but the company has come under fire lately and I want to try out another company.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sustainable Overcoats

I've been in the market for a nice overcoat for a while and want to buy something more sustainably produced. I've searched through many, many sust-brands and have only been able to find parkas/puffers/softshells.

Does anyone know any brands that actually carry men's overcoats? Or am I left with buying second hand?

This is the time when every individual should understand the impact of Fashion Industries on Environment and should shares the same vision for cleaning the society by changing their simple decisions of choosing and buying clothes. You might get surprised to know fashion industries is one of the largest polluters in the world.

Marketing tricks that make you impulse buy

Hi everyone, I've been doing some research and thought I would share with you some marketing tricks that stores use to make you purchase impulsively. Enjoy the read!

1. BRAND AFFINITY

We are more likely to impulse buy from a brand we are familiar with (Kwon & Armstrong, 2002). That's why you see sales people in malls calling you over saying 'Let me tell you about this new product from X brand'. If you stop, they talk about the product and the brand and sometimes let you try things out (e.g. skincare, perfumes). The reason behind this is to make you feel closer to the brand, which increases the chance that you'll buy something on the spot.

2. 'GOOD DEALS'

Discounts, sales, buy one get one, free gift with any purchase - these strategies highly increase the chance that you will purchase impulsively. It happens because these promotions create a sense of added value in our mind. Unfortunately, it often leads us to buying things purely because it feels like a bargain. That way, we often end up buying things we don't wear or use (Rook, 1987).

3. ADVERTISEMENT SLOGANS

Particularly those which appeal to instant gratification and immediate pleasure. Examples include 'Indulge Yourself', 'There's No Time Like The Present', 'Just Do It'. This type of narrative urges us to buy immediately by giving a justification for an instant treat. As a result, we impulsively buy items we normally wouldn't.

4. STORE LAYOUTS

Generally, impulsive buys are cheaper than planned purchases. That is why you see relatively cheap items around the checkout area in stores. Small accessories, pens, candy, chewing gum etc.

It is a strategic placement - since we're already buying something and queuing to pay for it, it's easy to grab an additional keychain (Mohan, Sivakumaran & Sharma, 2013). This idea is based on the concept of the 'shopping momentum' - when we prime our brain with an initial purchase, it gets easier to go down the rabbit hole of impulsively buying things we hadn't planned on getting (Dhar, Huber & Khan, 2007).

5. FEAR OF MISSING OUT (FOMO)

FOMO inducing ideas and slogans include 'Limited Edition', 'Never Coming Back In Stock', 'Buy Now', 'Don't Miss Out'. They increase anxiety that we might miss out on some potentially useful item if we don't buy it right then and there. So we often buy it, justifying it with 'just in case' (Hodkinson, 2019).

***

Impulse buying is also influenced by personal motivations, self-control depletion, and even demographic factors. I made a video on my youtube channel 'Psych But Fashion' diving deep into the topic, where I also share strategies on how to better control yourself.

Thank you for reading, have a great day,

Bea

A sustainable alternative to "stocking stuffer" kind of gifts

Every Black Friday for the past 4 years, I load up on $1 fuzzy socks at Old Navy and gift them to friends and coworkers as a Christmas gift. As I've learned more about sustainability and fast fashion, I've realized this isn't an environmentally sound practice. I still really enjoy the tradition and would like to find something small and relatively cheap to gift friends. What are some of your favorite and sustainable stocking stuffer kind of gifts?

Where to get sustainable/ethical women’s underwear in UK?

I’m having a hard time finding cheap ethical and sustainable underwear. So far the cheapest I can find is 5 pairs for £35 at Rapanui, but at £7 per pair that’s still kind of expensive. I’m looking for something made from sustainable materials in ethical factories so i.e not in China.

I’ve made it almost a year without buying any fast fashion etc so I feel like underwear is the final hurdle and I don’t want to cave now! I might end up getting the Rapanui ones if there are no other options, but I would really like something cheaper if it exists. Does anyone know of anything?

Thoughts on a brand that makes home&lifestyle goods out of secondhand fabrics?

I'm working to extend the life of secondhand fabrics that thrift stores can't accept due to space or quality limitations and use them to make sustainable, useful and, affordable home and lifestyle products like face masks, scrunchies, oven-mitts, etc. Before going through with it though, I'm trying to get some reactions and feedback.

If you have 2 minutes, it would be really helpful if you could take this survey or give any thoughts on the idea!

Sustainable Fashion Brand Startup Masterclass - 6 Months From Idea to Finished Product

For the past 3 years, I have been pumping out as much free content for startup brands as I possibly could. When I left my Director of Product Development position in fast fashion and started + virtue + vice my goal was to help educate on how clothing is made and make fashion feel more intimate.

I guess you all like what I have been writing about because now I field 5+ calls per day from brands looking to get started. Unfortunately, I am just one person and starting to burn out. It's really hard for me to turn people away. Especially when they want to create something to help make the world better. That is why I am launching a 6-month group course to take brands from idea to a final product selling on their own online store.

There will be 25 weeks of live classes with special guest speakers, weekly office hours, 1 on 1 coaching, private networking, tons of templates, I am including my VIP list of ethical and sustainable manufacturers, and lots more!

Not an ad, genuinely want to know what you guys think of the concept! This token model is for a resale platform. Looking to innovate ethical fashion.

Uncommonn Tokens are reward points in a ‘sustainability’ program aimed at promoting recycled goods and reduced waste.

Platform users earn Tokens either by purchasing goods on the platform or by taking certain actions that support sustainability and can redeem them for goods on the platform.

Tokens will also be available on a public crypto exchange.

Users of the Uncommonn platform can be vendors or buyers, but preferably both. Uncommonn encourages users to upload information and provenance about goods they have purchased in order to promote their eventual resale. Whenever goods (new or used) are sold the vendor is obligated to award Tokens to the buyer. Vendors will be provided with a crypto-wallet and should maintain a balance of Tokens for this purpose.

Vendors may acquire Tokens in any or all of several ways:

(1) by partaking in the IEO (and thereby taking advantage of the large discount); (2) when previous customers redeem Tokens to the vendor in exchange for goods; (3) by purchasing Tokens directly from Uncommonn or from a public exchange; or (4) earning them by purchasing another vendor’s goods on the platform

Need recommendation for a durable ethical t shirt

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a black t shirt, I'd like to buy it from a ethical brand but it's also really important to me that the material and craftsmanship be durable and high quality. I want this piece to last at least ten years.

Its a plus if the brand is also a smaller company, because I'd like for this addition to my wardrobe to be crafted with some sense of artistry and passion.

I understand the price is up there for this, but obviously I don't want to spend money unnecessarily. I am willing to pay more, however, since I view this as art and I really love clothes.

If anyone has a good recommendation please let me know.

Accessories in sustainable fashion?

I’m currently in the process of trying to make my lifestyle more sustainable in little ways that i’m able to within my budget and comfort!

My main change is going to try to shop second hand instead of settling for cheap fast fashion. However, i’m not sure what the consensus is about buying accessories from fast fashion brands? Accessories such as rings, necklaces, belts, maybe bags, etc..? Is that included under the umbrella of “fast fashion” that should be taken out of your lifestyle?

I apologize if this is an obvious question, i’m trying my best to learn! And if there are any budget friendly, alternative/quirky style accessory recommendations you have let me know!

Sustainable Yoga Clothes

I aways thrifted clothes but never really was aware of how destructive fashion is to the environment. I recently learned the harms of plastic in clothing and the impact on the earth. I found an awesome brand of yoga/ athletic clothing looking to combat this, Purusha People . I really fell in love with their mission (and lets be honest super cute clothes). If you check them out you can save 10% with the code earthgrown.

Besides thrifting, what are some other companies working toward sustainability in fashion?

I look for quality yarn (linen, cashmere, cotton) and in the color i want or white for dying. I always make sure to get a bigger size then I normally wear to make sure I have enough yarn.

You can buy sweaters with holes in it as you will easily fix the holes by just tying the yarn together. Stained also works because you can just cut the stained part out.

But seriously, you can upcycle a $4 cashmere sweater into something awesome.

Is depop really sustainable?

We all know depop is a far better place to shop than any other fast-fashion store since their close is second-hand. However I believe it actually causes people to buy more fast fashion items (especially online shopping) because acts like a safety net for people to change their mind about clothes they purchased and/or purchase clothes that does not dit them well. Therefore, fast-fashion brands still have a profit from the person who originally bought their clothes. I know that we live in a world where fast fashion dominates fashion industry, and buying items second hand is still a big step in the right direction, however I’ve seen a lot of influencer promoting using depop as an excuse to buy more unsustainable clothes because they can sell it for little to no loss financially.

Dear all,

How are you? I am the founder of a new clothing brand Applied Zcience.

After the success of our first project at Kickstarter. We are launching our second project with the new, fun, and functional sweater:

Reversible Real Knitted Sweater

3 color combos for selection

Made with 40% Non-Mulesing Extrafine Merino Wool + 60% Refibra Lyocell, this crew neck sweater can be reversed from solid to stripe. It is perfect for switching things up depending on your mood or outfit.

It is not easy to find a reversible sweater in the market because the craftsmanship is more complicated and high standard.

Sustainable Maritime Clothing

Hi All, a friend and I (both ex-seafarers - Royal and Merchant Navy respectively) have just launched All At Sea.

All At Sea is a start up selling sustainable clothing (organic cotton, factory has no waste water, powered by wind, no plastic in any of the production or packaging, you can also send your purchases back in the future to be recycled and get £5 off).

The purpose of the brand is to raise awareness for seafarers and the issues they face on a daily basis. We do this through our own advocacy but also through supporting a world leading seafarers rights charity with a percentage of our profits.

We are looking to raise the profile of our brand amongst the sustainable fashion community. Please take a look at our website www.all-at-sea.co.uk

Thanks

Joe

Shopify store owners: would you like to beta test our resale app?

Hi everyone!

I'm a digital marketer and work with sustainability-focused businesses.

My newest client developed a Shopify app that enables resale on your store (your customers will be able to resell products they initially bought from you directly on your shop rather than reselling on OfferUp, Depop, ThredUp, etc.).

Considering that the resale market is currently valued at $28B+ and is currently growing 21x faster than traditional retail, I feel like this app will pop off if I get it in front of the right audience. However, I'm having trouble finding beta testers for this app! I thought I'd post here to see if anybody was interested.

Thank you!

How harmful can returns be?

We’re going to take a wild guess and assume that at one point in your life you've avoided scouring shop rails and instead ordered a few potential outfits online with the intention to only keep your favourites. And why wouldn’t you? Online shopping means you don't have to leave your bed, you can quickly filter your search, you can pay in instalments and, more often than not, returning clothes is easy and free. There are no downsides! Or so we thought…

The bad news is all the transportation of these returned products will release greenhouse gases and quite often, your returns will simply then be put in landfill. Shocking! This is because it often costs a company more to process your return than the product is worth, so even if the product is brand new and unworn it will simply be thrown away in a non-sustainable fashion. It is estimated that ‘5 billion pounds of waste is generated through returns each year, contributing 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.’

It might be worth considering what you buy carefully, checking sizing charts to avoid having to order multiple sizes to try or taking a trip to the shops and trying before you buy (once it is considered safe to do so when Coronavirus is less of a threat). Or try buying second hand products where it is less likely that the seller will dispose of an item if you return it. Try Depop! Or try shopping with smaller businesses that offer slow fashion and who are open about how they handle returns.

Here at Miskie we are trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible! If you are unhappy with your bralette purchase you can return it unworn, and with the labels still attached, for it to be re-sold to another valued Miskie customer. Due to hygiene reasons we do not accept returns of our panties unless they are faulty and then we send them, as well as any other faulty items, to be recycled by a third party. So there’s no reason not to take a chance on some of our products!

Find out more here: https://www.miskielondon.com/blogs/news/how-harmful-are-returns

WHY FASHION PSYCHOLOGY IS IMPORTANT

Aside from the primary function of clothing to protect our bodies from the environment, it is also a social norm. The way we dress sends out a message about our identity - social status, gender, religion, occupation etc. We also use attire to express more specific aspects of our identity, like which soccer team we support or which school we attend. Not only can we express ourselves through our outfits, we can also modify our emotional and mental states using clothes and accessories.

Because clothing sends so much information about us at an instant, it is one of the main tools we use to form first impressions about each other. Knowing how people perceive different styles and colours of clothes can help us in making lasting personal & business connections.

Most importantly, fashion psychology covers topics way beyond clothing itself. Inclusivity, diversity, labour exploitation, mental health and overconsumption in the fashion industry are among the issues fashion psychology addresses and has a power to find at least partial solutions for.

We are all human, meaning that we act according to psychological principles as it is a study of the human mind and behaviour. We also all buy clothes and get dressed in the morning, meaning we are all at least to some extent involved in the fashion industry. Disproportionately to its size, the fashion industry is underrepresented in psychological research and popular psychology.

It affects all of us and on top of that, it is super interesting and exciting to learn about!

My name is Bea - I'm a psychology graduate who created Psych But Make It Fashion (@psychbutfashion) to spread the knowledge about fashion psychology and related topics surrounding the fashion industry. On my social media, you will find research findings, quotes and statistics understandable to everyone. Some of the ideas you can easily apply as tips to improve certain aspects of your life. Others might give you an opportunity to relate, or just learn about interesting or exciting things you never thought about.

Follow me on INSTAGRAM to discover fashion psychology one idea at a time. Also subscribe to my YOUTUBE CHANNEL, where we'll be discovering fashion psychology one video at a time. On youtube, I'll share more interesting findings, give tips, and dive deeper into the topics. First video is coming on Friday.

Thank you so much for your support & I cannot wait for you to join the journey !

xx Bea

Sourcing sustainable basics in China?

Hi r/SustainableFashion,

My partner and I are in currently in the early stages of creating a sustainable clothing brand. This is something new for us. We have a fulfillment centre in China who handles product sourcing and logistics for our other brand, who will also be handling fulfillment of these products.

At first, we thought hemp clothing would be a good idea, however, we have found that it is now banned in China, and so it's no longer an option. We're here to ask you what alternatives would work best when designing a clothing brand that is based around sustainability. If hemp is not an option, what would you recommend?

Insight into what we should be looking for will be super helpful, both for us and our fulfillment agent.

Thanks!

I just had an idea!

I am a longtime fashion consumer, but I’ve only recently started replacing my clothes with more ethical and sustainable options. I’ve noticed that I’m spending a lot of time looking up brands, which is all fine and dandy, but it can get quite boring trying to find adequate alternatives for things I already have. So, I had an idea. What do you guys think about an online store for just ethical / sustainable clothing? Basically, a one stop shop where you can be guaranteed that all the items you can purchase are definitely responsibly made. What do you think?

I know there are some similar websites to this already out there, but regardless of that, how do you feel about this kind of a service?
