What gets you started to love sustainable brands?

Just wanted to know a little bit more about what makes you start to look for sustainable brands or generally become cautious about the pollution of fashion industry?

For me, I bought 5 items (activewears mainly - I wear leggings everywhere:)) worth around $100 from SHEIN. Yes, 5 items for $100 from SHEIN. Simply because I was a college student and I was broke, but I like to wear nice activewears for gym. But when I got the clothes, they just smell awful, it looks like it will get ripped off after three times of wearing it, and there wasn't even a care label. After that I decided not to buy anything from fast fashion brand. I'd rather use $100 to buy one good legging that I can wear for a long time instead of buying super cheap ones from brands like SHEIN!

What makes you start on sustainable fashion journey?

I've been changing my lifestyle to be more sustainable in every way I can be and I really want to have sustainable clothing but how do I figure out if the brands I have right now are sustainable or not?

Sunglasses? (UK)

Hi,

Up until now, I've only ever bought cheap pairs that fall apart after the summer. Can anyone tell me if there is a brand to look out for that isn't one of the grossly overpriced designer ones? I really want a classic pair that will last me a while.

Thanks!

Live Sustainably & Move in Style - sustainable activewear that colours your workout. We are launching on Kickstarter soon!

Hey community!

I am launching a sustainable activewear brand on Kickstarter in June 2021! I started the brand from the beginning of last year, which is when Covid started to hit Australia. That is when I started to do workout more often. However I had struggles to find the right size for my sports bras, and those thick leggings pill all the time, especially after my dog sits on my laps, his fur is everywhere.

My passion on fashion along with the struggles for activewears motivate me to start Evanana. Everything gets delayed from sourcing swatches, getting first batch of samples to managing photoshoots, but after this long wait, we are finally approaching the launching date!

https://preview.redd.it/ggwj3fboewv61.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a38bc980cd4a9b06ef04f83ad636a85dc8e7cf7

We are using Econly fabrics, which are 100% re-generated nylon. The fabric has features like UV protection, anti-pillling and Ultrachlorine resistant and many more. We have also added two side pockets and one back chain pockets for outdoor explorers. The sportsbra has adaptable back strips which are perfect for different intensity of workout and to make sure the best fit. Thank you so much for checking it out!

STELAR: Handcrafted handbags made from regenerative materials

They collaborate with artisans in Bali to create handwoven luxury handbags from local sustainable and regenerative materials like bamboo, atta grass, and leather sourced as a by-product from the meat industry. They have a slow-fashion ethos: buy less, buy better.

They are crowdfunding on Indiegogo. Check them out and back them:

https://www.indiegogo.com/command_center/stelar-bags-with-purpose/reft/26417059/rd01

They work directly with suppliers to select their materials, minimising waste and water usage whilst maximising quality at each step.

By applying this integrated approach, they are able to simplify logistics, minimise transportation, and lower human and environmental impact, which in turn, results in dramatically fewer CO2 emissions than traditional supply and distribution chains.

Be a part of a sustainability app!

Hello guys! I'm a User Experience Designer and I'm creating an app to help those who wish to start or maintain a low/zero-waste lifestyle. If this sounds like you, it would be tremendously helpful if you can complete 3 minute survey that will give me insights to targeting the major problems on why people may struggle, and what their motivations and desires are with this lifestyle. This will then help me create a product that can hopefully fix those problems and encourage people to live more sustainably. I would greatly appreciate your participation! Thank you:)

What are your thoughts on the durability of fabrics with 5% spandex?

I'm looking at some different options for a more long-term everyday t-shirt that's going to last. I'm basically planning to get organic cotton. I really have a stigma in my mind against and he synthetic fibers, because in the past I know that it's ended with the clothes ending up in the trash. I've seen online somewhere that such a low level of spandex won't effect durability but I don't know if it's true.

Replacing clothing through ebay/poshmark/etc.

Even before pandemic, I had gained weight and not a lot of my clothes didn't fit. I didn't have motivation to dress up or go shopping, until recently. One of my tips is to use fashion resale websites to replace items you used to fit, and size up. I've even replaced my favorite jacket in the world that I thrifted when it wore itself out. I also have saved quite a bit in the process instead of buying new again, and feel better about it being sustainable. I've just never heard of this technique elsewhere. Anyone else try this?

The fashion industry has a disastrous impact on our environment as the industry is one of the largest polluters in the world. Some of the environmental impacts include wastewater pollution, water consumption, microfibers in our oceans, landfill and greenhouse emissions to name a few.

A solution that is reducing the impact that the fashion industry has on our environment is making garments to order.

Changing the dynamics of the clothing industry

As we have come to witness, bulk producing sometimes leads to excess stock where fashion brands are left to sell clothes at heavily discounted prices to move the excess stock.

As the name suggests, made to order is making every piece as it is ordered, unlike the traditional way of manufacturing, where manufacturers and brands would bulk produce garments.

Producing garments by order eliminates the textile waste in factories and landfill. It also boasts ethical benefits as manufacturing employees aren’t pushed to produces thousands of items in short turnaround times to fulfil bulk orders. The focus is on eliminating excess waste whilst improving ethical working conditions.

Alone in the USA, each year approximately 13 million tonnes of textile waste are either dumped into landfills or burned and globally this number increases to 92 million tonnes. The amount of global textile waste is predicted to go up to 134 million tonnes a year by 2030. Unfortunately, only 12% of the material used for clothing ends up be recycled.

Made to order with Always Trendin

At Always Trendin, our ready to brand clothing aims to reduce textile waste, by making garments as they are ordered. We hold no stock on hand, ensuring every garment is stitched and crafted. Our popular Certified 100% Organic Cotton is used for a more premium, luxurious feel and more eco-friendly footprint.

We have gone beyond ethical and sustainable manufacturing by making every made to order garment carbon neutral. A percentage of each garment is donated towards funding projects that offset the carbon emissions produced while making the garment.

The ultimate goal is to reduce our environmental impact, waste and create quality garments that are made to last. If you want to create your side hustle, or give you existing process a sustainable upgrade, contact our team to explore your options.

What are some good polyester alternatives and/or brands that don't use it for athletic wear?

I asked this in r/ethicalfashion but wanted to see what recommendations this sub would recommend as well. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of you can relate to this. Don't you just hate that feeling of sweating in polyester? I can't stand it, and hate the fact that I'm wearing plastic as well.

I'm open to anything. I'm a male, but am open to trying brands that are more geared towards women if it's a t-shirt or something.

Thanks :)

- Innovation trough comfort and sustainability: Collectively we have improved our technology for supreme comfort using the best recycled materials available.

-Lightweight: Designed with super light materials weighting only 186gr so you almost forget you're wearing shoes.

-Improved Fit: Not all shoes fit as we all have different feet. So we developed a material that is resistant and stretchable so it moulds to your feet with use.

-Sustainable: We care about our community and our planet. We believe is our responsibility to make products as sustainable as possible.

-Weatherproof: Designed to make your life simple. The uppers are water repellent and the outsoles are made with sticky recycled rubber for best grip.

Upcycling as much as we can

As a company we want to change the way people look at “trash” and prove that recycled and upcycled materials are as worthy as new ones.

Our rubber outsoles are made with discarded party balloons and tires leftover, adding slip resistance and great flexibility.

The upper materials are 100% vegan.

The lining is 100% bamboo for a silky touch, it also helps with odor control and it's anti-bacterias.

We choose a super smooth suede made of recycled plastic for the outside layer and added a water repellent coat so you don't need to worry about rainy days.

To finish off : Our Insole is made of castor oil and it's from Ortholite™️. Global leading comfort insole brand.

Fairly Produced in Brazil

We proudly produce our shoes in Franca, a Key cluster of shoe industry in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

The city of Franca is Brazil’s second largest footwear production centre. It consists of hundreds of companies with the capacity to produce over 30 million pairs of shoes a year, directly generating about 20,000 jobs.

Our Partner is a family-owned factory incredibly strong on environmental responsibilities and human and social rights, with good working conditions and wages. They invest in state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, using only high-quality materials, supplied mostly within the Brazilian domestic market itself.

Hemp Cotton?

So from my research, hemp is the best fabric for sustainability, at least when compared with cotton and bamboo.

All the listings I can find on Etsy for products made with hemp say they're made from "hemp cotton". Is this another name for hemp fabric? Or is the product a mixture of hemp and cotton?

Let's make sustainable fashion more accessible!

Hi there!! I'm working on a personal passion project in user experience (UX) design and I would love all of your opinions on the intersection of sustainable fashion & technology!

My research questions is: How can we make sustainable fashion more accessible via apps? There's some more notes/description in my survey link, but right now I just need to gather some early research to better define my future goals for this project.

Some of my big ideas include:

Utilizing this app would create a means of cutting down on carbon emissions by way of:
1. Less transportation of shipments [i.e. shipping within America only (at this time)]
2. Zero waste shipping and packaging
3. Reusing/recycling clothing to ease fast fashion production

I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with Depop, Poshmark, and Grailed, but I've found that they employ a lot of concerning practices -- dropshipping being one of the worst points.

Anyways, it would mean a lot to get a discussion going about this. Thank you, everyone, in advance!

Here's the link again. Please let me know if you run into any issues in the process!

I'm looking for tips on sustainable/ethical jeans that accomodate bigger thighs/smaller waist. I'm looking for slim/straight as it's more flattering than wider leg styles on me. I have the 501 from Levi's, but they are tight in the thigh and tend to bunch in the front/crotch because they're not quite right. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your thoughts: clothing pre-order

Hi all!

I have a clothing line (womenswear) with sustainable approach (using leftover fabrics). And I want to take it to the next level... I have a product (dress), which some of the costumers want to see back in stock... But I want to try to do it with a Pre-order system or via Kick-starter... (I also have to focus on business side, make my voice louder). So, there are pros and cons for both... But.. if you were a potential new customer, would you rather pre-order it from the original website or back it on Kickstarter?

If ulit was from the brand you already boight smth from, would you rather Pre-order or back the Kick-starter project? Or doesn't matter that much?

All thoughts & comments are welcomed!

Thanks in advance!

I upcycled on old upcycle, which I changed the sleeves into puff sleeves. Now I add some corset inspired details. You can make this easily with an eyelet press and hand stitching or the sewing machine. Kinda boho, kinda cottage core, kinda victorian, kinda IDK but it is somewhat of a vibe.

Is it better to upcycle like new clothes or donate them to someone who can use them as they are?

I want to live more sustainably and learn how to upcycle clothes. I have a bunch of clothes around (many of them new or like new) that don't fit anybody in our house and I'm wondering if it's better to give them to people who can wear them as they are or to change them into something that we can use.

Would you..

So quick question, if there was a pre-loved, secondhand brand that was size inclusive, truly ethical & sustainable (for example utilized biodegradable packaging & responsibly recycled unsold goods) AND donated at least 5% of profits to customer-voted on charities, would you be inclined to shop with them vs. say like salvation army (where they literally fund anti-gay propaganda) or goodwill (where they literally pay their disabled employees as low as 21 cents an hr, yes really that low, look it up. gov. loophole and they throw out unsellable goods)

USA MOM-I need your help "Sustainability among Motherhood" focusing on textiles survey

Hey everyone!

My name is Lena and I am actually from Austria, but was an au pair (live-in nanny) in San Antonio, TX.

I am about to graduate and therefore, I am writing my dissertation about "Sustainability among Motherhood" and also created a survey in order to answer my research question. The survey focuses on the buying behavior of American mothers, who have at least one child between the age of 0 to 3 years when purchasing textiles for their children (with a main focus on organic texitles).

I am now looking for American mothers, who have at least one child between the age of 0 to 3 years and would be willing to fill out my survey.

It takes about 8 minutes to complete the survey and I appreciate any help. As a "thank you" I am offering the option to fill in an email address at the end of the survey in order to have the chance to win one $50 USD Amazon gift card.

Thank you so much for your help!

Do you know any clothing brands that source and manufacture their products 100% within only one country?

That would mean that the raw material, fiber, threads, dyeing, stitching, printing, and other parts of production are all made and completed in one country.

Sustainable Manufacturing Alternatives in the Textile Industry

I am currently part of a co-creation project aimed to develop an idea that could be applied to the textile production process, in order to make it more sustainable. We are still thinking about which part of the process we are going to focus on (production of raw materials, eco-friendly-treatment, for example), so we would like to assess the main worries of our possible end users. So, redditors, I have the following questions:

  1. How important do you think sustainability is in the textile industry?
  2. What are the current practices that you apply to your life to make it more sustainable, particularly when it comes to fashion?
  3. In which part of the textile manufacturing process do you think lie the most problems related to unstustainable practices?
  4. Based on your answer to question number 3, what kind of service or product would you like to see developed to lessen the impact of this industry on the environment?

It all began in 2017 when two friends wished they had casual shoes as comfortable as slippers while finishing the scenography of an indie film festival and having some fun hitting the dance floor. One year later, in 2018, Undo For Tomorrow became real creating a new category of comfy, cool, casual shoes fit for all kinds of daily adventures using sustainable materials.

The 100% bamboo lining is antibacterial and fights bad odors. The outer shell is water repellent to keep your feet dry and happy. Most importantly, they are made with the best recycled, natural and completely vegan materials. No animal supplies are used to make our shoes.

As a company, UNDO wants to change the way people look at “trash” and prove that recycled and upcycled materials can be as worthy as new ones. A prime example is that our rubber outsoles are made with discarded party balloons.

Nuven is going live on Indiegogo this month for pre-order at a very special price.

Born in the energetic city of Rio de Janeiro, and now based in Lisbon, Undo For Tomorrow is a Start-Up that wants to bring comfort, style and hope by providing lightweight cool shoes to help de-stress people's daily lives.

Ethically priced fashion but with excessive markups??

So I understand that sustainable fashion is higher priced due to the ethical and fair practices but brands like reformation prices still seem very high priced. For example this article reveals that a plain cotton t-shirt rounds out to true cost of only $10 and sells for 36 with the other 26 going towards business costs. https://www.sustainably-chic.com/blog/true-cost-of-a-sustainable-organic-t-shirt To me, that seems reasonable, but other ethical fashion stores are charging upwards of $200 for a single cotton ethically made dress. Surely, the basic patterns and dyes on the fabrics can’t increase the true cost that much? Even if it went to true cost of an additional $10 or $15 thats what... $25 true cost, the mark up of nearly $175 does not seem reasonable at all. Even with large scale overhead costs and especially considering these larger brands already have better reach than the smaller lower cost ones. Maybe a mark up for $50 but at most the dress should go for $75 not $200-250. I feel like some of these larger ethical fashion brands actually discourage consumers who want to shop for ethical and sustainable fashion from buying because the prices are so high. Again, I’m not referring to the high price due to the ethically sourced fabrics and the fair wages and sustainable practices I am referring to the markup that’s going in towards marketing or other services. Well yes these are needed for businesses to run it just doesn’t seem right that the markup is so high. Example: fast fashion is turning a profit at $10 for something unethically made at $.20, theres about a 2,000-3,000% markup excluding overhead costs on fast fashion items. While the markup on high priced ethical brands $20, sold at $200, excluding $25 additional for overhead costs is around 350%. This is a drastically lower priced markup, but still the markup seems a bit high even for “overhead costs” and sustainable practices. I am definitely trying to become more sustainable in my own practices and also in shopping but the exuberant pricing for decent looking ethical pieces is discouraging. When a much more reasonably priced $75-80 dress that is ethically made could still turn a reasonable profit for the company with only the 75-100% markup. And thats with about $20 dress making, about $25 and some change for all other costs associated with the single garment. The company would still turn $34 in pure profit for the dress. So why can’t ethical brands, allow more people to become conscious buyers by lowering their profit margin for true sustainability of the sustainable fashion industry? And don’t even get me started on vintage clothing pricing these days...Thoughts?

Digitally made-to-measure sustainable brand

Hello guys!

I have recently launched my sustainable fashion brand and you can check it out here - https://dianaborobar.com

We only use recycled, certified and biodegradable fabrics for all our garments which and ethically produced in our in-house studio.

While sizing is an inconsistent system that fails women across the board, the brand combines technology and personalisation in order to achieve a qualitative product that is made to last. Each garments is made-to-measure and for this we use an application that measures customers with only two photos of themsleves.

Do you use a capsule wardrobe app?

Hello,

I've recently starting using the capsule wardrobe method and have been looking at the apps on the market already e.g. Cladwell, MindDress. But nothing quite fits my needs, so I was thinking of creating my own that includes the following features:

  • Take quiz to guide you to figure out Capsule format e.g. number of total items, number of items for each category, color palette etc.
  • Uploading photos of existing items
  • Sorting items into categories/colors/prints/seasons.
  • Creating outfits & outfit plan for particular days
  • When looking for a new item to fill out a gap in the capsule, getting suggestions for sustainable or second hand options that would work with existing wardrobe items

The app would be free, funded by affiliate links on the items suggested and/or a percentage taken from second hand item sales.

Would you use something like this? If so, is there anything else you would want to see?

Do you use another capsule wardrobe app? Which one? What do you like and dislike about it?

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

I created a Kickstarter to raise money for a new sustainable drop-shipping platform with P.O.D. so that anyone can start a business from home or create custom merch from their brand. People who back the campaign get an awesome capsule wardrobe, early access to the new platform, and a free t-shirt!

I recreated a denim look from the new (for some reason controversial LOL) Lil Nas X video! PFEW.. My most challenging sewing project in a long time! I had no clue how to start and in what order to do everything, but when I went step by step it all worked out surprisingly well. Hope you like this.

I am looking for a lotus flower silk business to purchase from and ideally eventually invest in.

Veganism is growing more and more everyday. Being plant-based myself, I am looking for silk alternatives for a broader range of items, including but also expanding on from the regular lotus silk scarves that are mainly found.

I am a novice with this sector, but I think that it may be a good place to start, as I strongly feel that this would be a supportable niche.

Does anyone know of any places that make lotus silk in large quantities, or even which the most successful of sellers may be? Thank you so much!

THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

Two weeks ago I made a post about a project I was working on in my spare time. It's a chrome extension called bamboo that makes buying sustainable clothing easier. I still cant believe all the positive responses I got here and on r/ethicalfashion. As of right now, bamboo has almost 80 users and 12 sustainable brands from reddit itself!!!

Lots of love to those of you that tested out the extension and gave me valuable feedback. If any of you want to test out the extension, here is the link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bamboo/kiaihdnhbccalndiamgnlganlaoiamho?hl=en-US&authuser=3

For those of you that haven't seen the previous post, here is how bamboo works:

  1. Browse as you normally would on your favorite fashion websites. The BETA currently works on five of the top visited fashion sites. (H&M, Boohoo, Nastygal, Zara, ASOS) More are being added soon.
  2. When you see an item you like, click on the Bamboo icon to get recommendations of the same style of clothing from hundreds of ethical and sustainable brands. We search through 250+ brands and more than 10,000 + items to find products that match your style.
  3. Click on the product you like from our recommendations and proceed to checkout. It's as easy as that!

P.S If you are a sustainable brand and want to be featured on the extension, send me a DM or comment below.

I love you all !!!!

Survey on Sustainable Fashion

I'm doing my undergrad thesis on the inequalities within sustainable fashion with the aim to evaluate the social and economic factors. i need approximately 10 more participants to fill it out. It should take approximately 15 minutes; there are a couple of open-ended questions which may take up time but these are optional. You do have to be over the age of 18. Thank you for your time.

A vegan leather jewelry bag that doesn't use plastics, polyurethane, etc.

I love this subreddit. It is exactly how my SO and I think about fashion, eliminating fast fashion and focusing on sustainably made products.

Anyways, we moved to Mexico a little over a year ago and she discovered a cactus leather manufacturer that creates luxury 'leather' from sustainable prickly pear farms.

She has designed a jewelry bag (clutch) that uses this leather and other handpicked sustainable materials: Lunar Method Bags

I thought I would share with you all, and would love your thoughts or questions! Much appreciated.

Where to find sustainable formal gowns?

Hi! I'm struggling to find formal gowns that are sustainable (I'm trying to avoid shopping at Reformation considering their questionable history). More specifically, if anyone has any recommendations for places that have bridesmaids dresses and wedding gowns, that'd be awesome! I'm looking at stuff that might look like this: https://www.bhldn.com/products/cali-dress-marigold. I really like this dress, but I believe this company is owned by the same one that owns Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, which is a bit of a yikes. Thank you!!

Thoughts On Eco Friendly Vegan Leather?

I recently came across an article which listed down some vegan alternatives to leather like leather made from Pineapple, Cactus, Mushroom and even coconut.

Wanted to get everyone's view, these materials are definitely animal free, much much more eco friendly and biodegradable than PU Leather/Pleather/Faux Leather which is made from plastics and petroleum products, but are quite expensive.

Would you be willing to shell out 2X or 3X times more money for a Cactus leather product like apparel, handbag or shoe rather than the same thing made from PU Leather

What will you choose? Leather product or cactus leather product? Same price and design, but cactus will not last as long (maybe 3-4 years whereas a leather product can last 8 to 10 years sometimes)
