Trends

fashion and novelty companies only making a limited amount of product to negate the damage they already done to earth being rebranded as product scarcity by consumers is so counter productive to becoming sustainable. Especially when we have food and resource scarcity all over the world and can possibly run out of resources by 2050. Like yes we actually should only make a limited amount of units of trend and hype drop items! We need a rewiring of our brains

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Is Your Favorite Fashion Brand Really Sustainable? We'll Run a FREE AI Check on Their Public Reports (48hr Insights!)

Hey fashion community,

It's tough to tell genuine sustainability from greenwashing in fashion. We're Legal Pythia, a team passionate about clarity, and we've built an Explainable AI (XAI) to help.

Our XAI analyzes public sustainability reports from fashion brands. What's cool? It doesn't just judge; it shows you why a claim is verifiable, or why it might be misleading. Think of it as a transparent magnifying glass for green claims.

Our offer to you – absolutely free, no sales pitch, ever.

Got a brand's public sustainability report you're curious about? Drop a link in the comments below.

We'll pick a few each week, and within 48 hours, we'll share our AI's high-level findings. We'll highlight strengths and red flags, always explaining its reasoning.

This is purely to show what transparent AI can do to foster honest conversations about ethical fashion. Let's get some clarity together!

What do you wish activewear brands actually understood? Trying to create something better

Hey ladies,

I’m working on starting a women’s activewear brand—and I wanted to come here before going too deep, because honestly, I’m building it for women like us.

What I’ve found (and felt!) is that most workout gear either:

  • Fits great but is made from plastic-heavy fabrics that don’t align with sustainable values
  • Or it’s eco-friendly, but not supportive, flattering, or built for real workouts

I want to change that—create activewear that performs and cares about the planet, without compromising on feel, fit, or confidence.

But I don’t want to build this in a vacuum. I want to ask:

  • What do you actually look for in your workout bras or leggings?
  • Have you ever had a brand you loved—until it stopped delivering?
  • Would you ever consider biodegradable workout gear that performs like the best brands?

Whether you’re deep into strength training, yoga, running, or just trying to move more mindfully, I’d love to hear from you.

Even a sentence or two would help so much. If you're up for filling a short survey or just chatting, I’d be incredibly grateful. Just comment or DM—I promise I’m not here to sell anything, just to listen and build with purpose.

Is there any such thing as comfortable AND sustainable underwear?

I’m trying to buy less fast fashion, but when it comes to underwear, it feels like the “eco” stuff is just greenwashed and not even comfortable.

I’ve had issues with bamboo or recycled fabric pairs losing stretch, slipping up my thighs, or just feeling off. Has anyone found mens underwear that actually fits well and checks the sustainability box?

Is shopping at Ross or Marshall’s closer similar to thrifting? Or is this just as bad?

I was at Ross and Marshall’s and felt like I scored a bunch of clothing for great deals from “high end” brands and fast fashion brands I have loved in the past like Abercrombie & Fitch. Everything was under $15. I even found some hair care products like Fenty Beauty, etc.

Just wondering if this is basically thrifting, and if otherwise why so?

Hello Everyone,

Me and my wife are environmentally conscious people. We want to dress fashionably but sustainably. But everything is so expensive. The cost makes me wonder if I can be eco friendly while being able to afford.

What are other issues you’ve been facing that stop you from purchasing eco friendly sustainable clothes?

Also if you could suggest brands that are affordable and eco friendly which doesn’t have an issue regarding ethical practices, eco friendly products, etc.

Looking for recommendations for durable, sustainable Men's brands

Hey everyone, been trying to do my own research on sustainable brands lately, but finding it hard to sort through all the marketing and figure out who's actually legit.
Since the discussions on this sub are always pretty useful, I figured this would be the best place to ask directly.
I'm looking for men's clothes and accessories that are built to last and can handle a pretty active lifestyle. A big plus for brands that focus on repairability or using solid, recycled materials.

What are some brands you guys have had genuinely good experiences with? Cheers!

Non Synthetic Clothing?

Hello all!

Wife has started reacting to polyester and some other synthetic fibers so been trying to swap sheets/clothing/furniture coverings over to 100% cotton and such.

Been a nightmare trying to look at every tag on every item in stores, trying to find things online, and hell halfway becoming a material scientist figuring out what marketing terms like "better cotton" are actually made of.

Any good recommendations for women's clothing, particularlly buisness casual style and swim wear?

Sustainable fashion "influencer" query

I've been creating content for a few years (my account here) but feel that I am really struggling to click with the right content and my target audience. My goal is to leverage my climate change science degrees to talk about sustainable fashion/beauty and nature, but in an engaging and "chic" way - to essentially draw in young, fashionable people into the climate discussion.

Essentially, I want to ask - what draws you in on social media? What videos make you stop and watch? Are there any styles of videos you hate and scroll past immediately?

Pricing for Sustainable Clothes

Hey! I'm starting a brand selling sustainbale clothing and need help with pricing!

The selection includes pants, shorts, dresses, and matching sets. Everything is made out of upcycled fabrics like tablecloths and curtains that I thrift, get at garage sales, etc.

I prioritize really quality fabrics so most is 100% cotton, not see-through, and have beauiful designs and patterns.

The clothing is basic but comfortable and functional. Deep pockets, wide soft waistbands, things like that.

Right now I am selling online and not having much luck because I feel like I am competing with fast fashion and fast delivery. I am thinking I may do better at farmer's markets where people can understand the story/value of secondhand fabrics and see the quality of the items.

Any advice would be SO appreciated. PRICING!? Sales channels?

Sustainable activewear, shipping in Europe, with curve sizes.

Hihi!

I'm looking for sustainable activewear, that is based in or ships from Europe (to avoid import taxes) that has inclusive sizing.

I just tried a set from Organic Basics, who I love, but is always tricky with sizing - the XXXL fits me but is made for someone with more curves than I have, so has some weird gaping. I also could never find the right fit from Armed Angels. I had a pair of leggings from Patagonia that I loved and wore for years, but they don't sell that style anymore, their current sport fabrics are much thinner and less supportive than before.

Just discovered Pitaya from Spain and was really sad to see their sizing ends at Large.

Any suggestions? I prefer a more supportive/compressive fabric.

Charity-Driven Jewelry

Hey everyone,
I’ve just launched something that I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts on. It’s called the Solidarity Pendant. It’s shaped like two interlocking arms and meant to symbolize support through connection. We donate the profits to causes. We didn’t want to build another lifestyle brand. We wanted to build something that lets you wear your values — something people could wear to quietly show what they stand for, without the logos, without the hype.

We’re still in pre-launch, trying to get the word out — but mostly just want to make sure the mission and intention feel clear to people who care about ethical fashion and transparency.

This community’s sense of honesty and intention is something we’ve always admired — so if anyone has time to check it out and let me know how it lands, I’d truly appreciate it.

πŸŒ€building something bigger than fashionπŸŒ€

Been slowly working on a design project that merges sustainable fashion with deeper cultural meaning.

We’re developing shirts and layered gear using hemp blends and water-based single-color inks. Think 300gsm heavyweight tees, built to last. Every shirt has a subtle front symbol and a bold back design—often based on healing, cycles, or emotional growth.

But this isn’t just clothing. It’s tied into a larger vision involving filmed psychedelic experiences, community healing, and future job creation. The idea is: what if your favorite hoodie helped someone get clean, find work, or express grief?

The project’s placeholder name is Lunara. We’re aiming to release designs in drops tied to real stories. If you’re into fashion that carries weight—emotionally and physically—this might speak to you.

please offer some insight below, i'd love to learn something here.

🧡 How do you repair or tailor your clothes? I’m building something and would love your input.

Hey everyone – I’m working on a small project to make clothing repair and tailoring easier and more accessible (especially for people who don’t have the time or know where to go).

I’ve always believed that extending the life of our clothes is such a powerful step toward sustainability — but honestly, it’s still a bit of a hassle, especially in big cities. So I’ve been trying to build a tool that might help streamline the process a bit.

If you’ve ever had a pair of trousers you loved but wished fit better, or wanted to repair something without buying new, I’d really appreciate your input. Here’s a quick form I made: https://form.typeform.com/to/I6PNY8y9 It only takes a minute, and feedback is really helpful at this early stage!

Thanks in advance — and if this kind of thing interests you, happy to share updates as it evolves ✨

Durable Waterwear

It's pretty hot now here where I live, and I decided there's no time like the present to try and mock up that swimwear I always wanted to make. I've always hated swimsuits since I was very small because synthetics irritate my skin, but ever since I got into sustainability, going to a natural fiber option has been on my mind.

I want to make two main outfits, a sort of water-use playsuit for modesty and protection from the elements, inspired by old 1900s style, and similarly old-fashioned striped one-piece with tank sleeves and small shorts for maneuverability in the water. The one-piece I am already figuring I'll go with a thin wool knit like they did back then; I know it'll be heavy when wet but I need to do some weight training anyway lol. I'm not worried about wear too much because I really only think I'll wear it in pools. It's the playsuit set I'm not sure about.

I don't know what material would hold up well to brakish and ocean water, which are what we have to swim in around here outside of pools. Additionally elements of rocky beaches. I would just make something durable out of materials a fisherman might wear, but due to the fabric covering more of my body, I'd like to try to make it as light as possible. I'm stumped! I know natural materials will wear down regardless- that's a good thing after all! Better than micro plastics. But still, I would want to make something I can trust to hold up to the elements.

Hey Reddit, quick brainwave πŸ’‘—need your thoughts!

What if there was a way to earn from clothes you don’t wear often—and maybe even access new styles without buying more?

Something low-effort, high-impact. A win for your wallet and your closet.

Would you be up for it? • Would you let others use clothes you rarely wear, like lehangas, tux and stuff? • Would you try something like this if it meant extra cash? • What would make this idea work (or not) for you?

Keen to hear what y’all think πŸ‘‡

Why should fashion businesses use a PLM software like WFX?

Fashion businesses should use a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software like WFX PLM to streamline product development, improve collaboration, and bring better visibility into every stage of the fashion lifecycle—from concept to consumer. Here's why it’s essential:

1. Centralized Data Management

WFX PLM acts as a single source of truth for all product-related information—design files, tech packs, approvals, costing, and more. This eliminates scattered spreadsheets, endless email threads, and miscommunication.

2. Faster Time to Market

By digitizing and automating workflows, fashion brands can reduce development cycles, make quicker decisions, and speed up product launches—essential in a fast-moving fashion industry.

3. Seamless Collaboration

WFX PLM connects internal teams (design, merchandising, sourcing) with external partners (suppliers, factories) in real-time. This breaks down silos and enhances transparency across the global supply chain.

4. Improved Accuracy & Fewer Errors

Version control, change tracking, and digital approvals reduce costly mistakes in tech packs, sample coordination, and BOMs. It ensures everyone is always working on the latest file.

5. Enhanced Product Visibility

Gain complete visibility into the progress of each style, collection, or season—track milestones, identify bottlenecks, and take corrective action early.

6. Scalable & Cloud-Based

Being fully cloud-native, WFX PLM is accessible from anywhere, on any device—making it ideal for remote teams and global operations. It’s also scalable to grow with your business.

7. Sustainable Product Development

WFX PLM supports sustainability by allowing better material traceability, reducing sample wastage, and enabling smarter decision-making with data-driven insights.

8. Designed for Fashion

Unlike generic PLM tools, WFX is purpose-built for fashion businesses—with pre-configured modules, visual libraries, and workflows tailored for apparel, footwear, and accessories.

In short:

WFX PLM helps fashion companies digitize, organize, and accelerate product development—empowering them to stay competitive, reduce costs, and innovate faster.

Hey everyone! Some of you may recognize my username and already know this, but I’ve been working on tool to make shopping for sustainable fashion easier: FinerFit.

As part of it, I’ve been looking into how pricing works behind the scenes. I recently made a short video that explains how tariffs on imported clothing affect sustainability.

It covers: • Why the U.S. charges higher tariffs on synthetic fast fashion than on wool or leather • How these price differences influence what ends up on store shelves • What policy shifts could better support sustainable brands

Would love to hear your thoughts - whether you agree, disagree, or think I missed something important. Here’s the link to the video:

I'm a garment manfacturer based in India, i have been doing garment manufacturing for the top brands around the world... And for domestic brands as well

I would like to understand from you guys is sustainable fashion really worth it to try in my garmenting services...we recycle all our manufacturing waste but using recycled fabrics and trims is not in our playbook.

Brands give orders for complete new set of fabric and trims none of them majorly uses recycled material.

I am seeing this recent wave of recycling and sustainable fabrics and I think it's better to ask the consumer how the quality has been bcs from industrial pov they all say that recycled fabric isn't sustainable for more than 5 washes.

Pls provide your opinions on the same as i can ask brands to use recycled fabric against a small discount- i consider this as my part to help the planet more after using recycling all wastage from production.

Built my brand with GOTS, Fair Trade & SUPIMA cotton—here’s what worked (and what didn’t)

Hey folks,

After a long year of sourcing and building, I finally launched my ethical clothing brand—and wanted to share a bit of the experience that this community helped shape. From GOTS-certified organic cotton to Fair Trade and WRAP-certified factories, it’s been a huge learning curve with some compromises along the way.

Here’s a snapshot of what worked—and where I had to make tough calls:

Sourcing fully traceable materials is harder than expected, especially when trying to avoid greenwashing and verify certifications.

Most of our products are 100% natural fiber—like SUPIMA cotton tees and organic heavyweight cotton pieces.

But for a few items (like hoodies and sweatpants), the fabric includes around 20% recycled polyester. It was the only way to get the structure and durability we needed while working with mills that still met Fair Trade and GOTS certification where possible.

We use plastic-free packaging—recycled kraft paper, compostable mailers, and zero polybags. This actually took more work than product development.

No sweatshops, and we plant one tree for every product sold to give back in a small but tangible way.

This community has been incredibly valuable—reading past posts helped me steer clear of a lot of bad decisions early on. I’m not here to pitch anything—just thought it might help someone going down a similar road.

Open book if anyone’s curious about any part of the process. – Sumeet | Robenti 🌱

Rant + Need Brand Recommendations

Hello

I feel like most of the brands around me are running on fast fashion models even though they don't call themselves that. They consider themselves exclusive with "good quality" clothes just because of their price range. But to be honest most of them start unravelling after first wear, so the quality is definitely not there. The other problem I have is of ethics. I see a lot of "luxury" and "high-end" brands copy designs and even artworks (I know using public domain images is different but they weren't using those) from the internet just for faster production. I have also seen them waste a lot of fabric during the sampling process, which they claim to recycle but I have seen bags of them just lying there. The whole process of thoughtfully designing a collection is losing value. Everything looks the same now, at least where I live, and they all lie about their fabric properties and quality.

Which is why I have been researching on sustainable fashion and I came across limited brands like mud jeans. I understand their main mission is to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize overconsumption in the industry, and some tend to focus on introducing eco-friendly fabrics, but the designs are often similar and... plain. I really want to find good designs that are sustainable and from a slow fashion brand. Can anyone recommend me good sustainable/slow fashion brands like farm rio? I don't mind the price range since I understand the point of slow fashion. I would like to slowly start investing in good pieces and support these brands. Even start-ups are cool.

How to get rid of the strong metal zipper smell?

I had my zip replaced, but the metal smell is horrible. I’ve tried getting rid of it with baking soda, vinegar, and soap. It's a bit better now, but the smell is still strong. What can I do? I don’t want to replace it with a plastic one, but I can’t stand the smell.

Can the Textile Industry Survive Global Warming? 🌍

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

The textile industry, a global economic powerhouse, now faces one of its biggest threats: global warming. Rising temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, and resource scarcity are forcing the industry to rethink its practices.

πŸ”₯ The Key Challenges:

1️⃣ Water Scarcity
Textile production, especially dyeing and finishing, requires massive water consumption. Global warming is already causing severe droughts, reducing water availability for manufacturing hubs.

2️⃣ Energy Intensive Processes
Traditional textile manufacturing heavily depends on fossil fuels. As carbon emissions increase, so do regulations and energy costs, challenging profitability.

3️⃣ Raw Material Disruption
Natural fibers like cotton are highly sensitive to climate shifts. Unpredictable yields and lower quality crops put strain on supply chains.

4️⃣ Consumer Pressure
Today's consumers are increasingly aware of sustainability. Brands failing to adapt face reputational risks and declining customer loyalty.

🌱 The Emerging Opportunities:

Sustainable Innovation
Companies investing in eco-friendly fibers (e.g., organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester) are gaining a competitive edge.

Circular Economy Models
Recycling, upcycling, and closed-loop production reduce waste and appeal to conscious consumers.

Green Energy Adoption
Switching to solar, wind, and energy-efficient technologies reduces carbon footprint and operational costs.

Transparency & Traceability
Digital tools (like blockchain and AI) allow brands to track sustainability metrics, building trust with both regulators and customers.

Know any small ethical brands? I’m building a platform to feature them (free)

Hey everyone! πŸ‘‹

I’m a student working on a project called Ethica, it’s a free platform to help people find small, ethical, sustainable, and independently owned fashion + beauty brands. Think: #CrueltyFree, #WomenOwned, #ZeroWaste, etc.

The site doesn’t sell anything just connects people with cool brands and tells their stories. I’m building it solo (and slowly learning web dev along the way), and right now I’m putting together a list of awesome brands to feature.

I posted about this yesterday but totally forgot the form link 😬 if you are an ethical brand or know one, I’d love it if you filled this out:

πŸ‘‰ https://form.typeform.com/to/reaGkcH0

Or if you’re a student looking to build your resume and want to volunteer (anything from design to research), feel free to drop a comment or DM me

Thanks so much!! πŸ’›

natural fiber activewear?

in process of transitioning my wardrobe to natural fibers but getting stuck at activewear. my favorite is girlfriend collective and i have some smaller brands in my collection. I'm a sweaty person, so moisture-wicking is ideal.

have we found a brand that holds up well? any brands that are mostly natural fibers but sweat-wicking? i've made peace that if it comes down to it i'll be crunchy and workout with what i have but hang out in the natural fiber activewear.

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

ETHICAL SHOPPING PLATFORM

Hey everyone!

I'm a student building a project called Ethica, it's a curated platform to help people shop by their values. The idea is to make it easier to find SMALL ethical, sustainable, and independently owned fashion and beauty brands from North America and beyond.

The site doesn’t sell anything...it just connects people to brands they might want to support. Each brand will have a short description, tags like #CrueltyFree, #WomenOwned, #ZeroWaste, etc., and a link to their site or Instagram. I also want to feature some of the founders’ stories and how they got started, what challenges they’ve faced, and what keeps them going.

I’m working on this solo and still pretty early in the process; mostly doing outreach, researching brands, and teaching myself web dev as I go (slowly but surely πŸ˜…).

Right now, I’m trying to build a list of awesome ethical brands to feature(its FREE!!!). So if you know any good ones especially in fashion or beauty... I’d love to hear them! Also, if you’ve ever worked on something similar or have tips about outreach, site-building, or anything at all, I’m all ears.

Thanks so much in advance πŸ’›

Sustainable / progressive baseball cap help

Please delete if not allowed!& TIA!

I'm trying to find a baseball cap that has something small on it to show my political affiliation (ex, 'resist' or a rainbow). When I google I get a bunch of cheap Etsy hats that are undoubtedly made in sweatshops. It seems hypocritical to advertise "resisting" on a product that is a result of what I want to resist.

I just spent the last few hours googling "sustainable, women/queer/bipoc etc owned clothing stores" going down the lists, and searching for "hats" in all their stores but nothing really came up.

I know the most sustainable answer is try to thrift a plain hat and figure out how to embroider it, but I don't have time to learn a whole new skill rn.

Any suggestions? Links to stores / baseball caps? Anyone who will embroider me a hat? Lol I just need a hat to wear to the gym each morning so I can go against all the "don't tread on me" bros

Disheartening experience with The Forumist

I seldom shop and collect a few eccentric pieces, and if I do buy new I try to work with small custom tailors that I find online - so I was happy to come across The Forumist, where they showcase several smaller brands. Their mission statement highlights is this:

"Our store is a seasonless platform for consciously crafted pieces: one-offs, limited editions, and made-to-order works that challenge the waste and excess of mass production."

I spent half a year looking over their page and most items (shoes, accessories) didn't change that much, so their seasonless platform design was sound to me.

But when I received my purchase of one of the brands they host I could immediately tell that the fabric, construction and overall product were fast fashion and very low quality. The top was also supposed to have a clasp at the back - which indicates that the fabric must be a bit stronger than what I actually received.

A little positive - when I contacted The Forumist via their support chat, the response was fast (<20min) and I was able to send them pictures from what I received and pointing out the difference in quality - turns out the brand used entirely different photos and with my intermediate sewing knowledge I am quite sure the fabric in the photos is different from the polyester I received.

The negative - this morning I went to the page again - and they edited the existing images. I mean they photoshopped the picture, not used new ones. When I contacted support they explained that they want to keep the page updated and that the seller informed them, that their manufacturing process recently changed. But this felt a bit gross to me because I tried the product on and there is no way this image is truthful and they continue to host this brand.

My snapshot from yesterday, before opening a case with support on the right side; today's updated picture on the left

The fabric was really thin, thinner than my sports bathing suit which is 1-layer and the seams were loose. Overall fit was nowhere to be found

Overall, this was disappointing - mostly because they continue to work with this brand.

My knicky labeled ones have lasted without issues for long long time but my subset ones? Elastic poking out everywhere And holes in the fabric

I'm really bummed

the high leg high waisted undies are what I'm trying to find a. Replacement for I can't keep justifying 25 bucks a pair for it not to last a few months

I also have sensory issues and I need a recommendation for that style of underwear does anyone have one 🫣

Are values out of fashion. What are your thoughts?

Recently read this article from Business of Fashion and it got me thinking.. Quite a few brands stopped highlighting their sustainability story and I'm not sure if the fashion industry is just being pragmatic or if this is a step backward?

Are people actually done with ✨sustainable fashion✨ or only done talking about it?

Would love to hear your thoughts!!
