Educational resources

Hi all, I am looking for educational resources on sustainability in fashion and textiles. My background is in art and textile design; however, my programs focused more on aesthetic appearance of design rather than integrating sustainability. I think it’s about time (!!) I’ve learned more seeing as sustainability is the absolute go-forward.

If you could recommend articles, books, YouTubers, social media accounts, as well as and especially online courses or programs would be wonderful. Thank you, much appreciated!

Sustainable/Fair Trade workwear

Hi,

this might be wrong subreddit so if I missed it please redirect me :)

Anyway I am looking for professional work wear that is ethical/sustainable/fair trade.

Last couple of years I am doing my best and buy my sports gear from brands like Patagonia and Prana other clothes for men I got mostly on Brothers we stand. But I struggle to find any work wear that is reinforced and have some extra pockets and be practical. Everything seems to be about fashion.

So if anyone has any idea what to go for I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

inside some of the most famous brands sustainable and ethical factories - who's greenwashing?

Last year I wrote an in-depth post about what to look for when buying the perfect t-shirt, I called it my "white tee shirt contest" ;) This year I wrote this review of sustainable and ethical t-shirt brands. I have personally been inside all of their factories (People Tree, Pact, prAna, Outerknown, and Patagonia), and am here to spill the tea about whos the real deal and who's just greenwashing.

Everlane: Sustainable? Ethical?

Hi everyone! I’m new to sustainable fashion and I was just wondering if you could tell me what you think of Everlane. According to this article that I read, “Using our sustainable brand criteria, powered by Remake, Everlane scored 30 points out of a possible 100, and that is failing!” Everlane Rating

Question here is: 1) what do you think about the brand? are they sustainable and ethical? 2) what do you think about the quality of their product? 3) if you think everlane is not good, can you suggest an alternative brand that sells good basics (workwear)?

NOTE: i wanted to buy everlane’s oversized blazer but the mixed reviews and poor rating stopped me.

Ireland online buy/sell options

Hi gals and guys, Searching for online buy/sell options for second hand clothes. Is Depop or Vinted a thing here? I am looking into ‘What she wore’ Facebook group, but searching for still active stuff is tough there. Is there anything else that is popular?

The reason I am asking, I am about to start searching for some formal dresses (going to two weddings if corona allows) and I am not yet sure I would to venture out to charity shops.

Dickies 874 sustainable alternative?

For me, there's something unbeatable about the rise, durability, and cut of the Dickie's 874 work pant. It's perfect for skating and general use where I don't have to worry about beating them up, and I can always repair them if need be. I'm also aware that the brand is completely opaque concerning it's manufacturing and the pant contains a large amount of synthetic fibers that could shed. Are there any good alternatives that I should be aware of?

I've been on the look out for months for underwear that doesn't contain synthetic materials but haven't come across anything yet. Obviously synthetic is needed for elasticity but I thought that maybe there would be companies making it work without synthetic materials somehow.

Instantly suspended from eBay?

Curious if anyone has had a similar experience- I made an account with eBay to buy some secondhand Levi's. I went through the website watching items that I liked but didn't attempt to purchase anything. 30 minutes after I make the account I got an email that it had been suspended indefinitely. The next morning I spoke with customer service, they told me suspensions are pretty standard on new accounts, and I appealed the suspension and had it lifted. Then about 30 minutes later I accessed my account try to make an offer on an item and got an error message. I contacted customer service again and was informed that my account had been suspended permanently, there was no way to appeal it, and I would never be able to make an ebay account ever again. They told me they were not able to disclose to me why the account was suspended but gave no reason why they couldn't. Anyone else have a similar experience with eBay? This seems really extreme..?

Warp and Weft underwear?

Hey, all

I’m on the search for the perfect sustainable underwear (that don’t break the bank) and I’m having some difficulty.

I just found the Warp and Weft underwear and wonder if anyone’s tried them? I have tried Pact and Boody so far to no success.

I am a somewhat curvy girl, so I tend to experience tight leg holes and a loose waistband. And freak underwear lines! So one could say that I am picky with underwear.

I appreciate it any info you may be able to offer!

Where do I buy jeans without breaking the bank?

Hi there!

I've been wearing the same jeans for a little too long. They're an elasticy hybrid fabric and let's just say the booty has seen better days. These were purchased before I made the switch to only sustainable brands or thrifted/consigned clothes. I've had a hell of a time finding good, made to last jeans that aren't $150+. I've tried looking through ThredUp and Depop with little luck. I would be going out and thrifting but there's a pandemic going on so that's not an option. Anyone know of a decent sustainable brand that is less expensive, or a good source for secondhand jeans online?

Thank you in advance!

Material search call out!

Hello Everyone,

I am a designer/artist based in the UK working on a project called seasonless.

seasonless is a project that is pushing the innovation of up-cycling, taking items of waste that would have gone to landfill and seeing how far we can go with transforming these items into garments with more value. Garments that you don’t want to throw away. Below you can see some images from the initial project of transform Jeans shirts and t-shirts

I need help sourcing more unwanted items now for a bigger project! I am opened to receiving donations suggestions or any advice on this! If you want to donate to be part of the project, your name will be part of the credit of the work!

I am looking for the following items (second hand/unwanted):

-100% cotton denim jean and jackets (any shades and sizes the larger the better!)

- Mens pinstriped shirts

- Silk or silk like material (this could be in the for of scarves)

If they have holes/wear or tear this is absolutely fine!

CAN FASHION CONSUMPTION HABITS HELP SAVE THE PLANET? Blog by SPEETRA DESIGN STUDIO JUNE 18, 2020

Always a new collection, more and more affordable clothes to encourage more consumption: The success of ready-to-wear has revolutionized the way we buy clothes, but has made fashion one of the most polluting industries. Can we break our consumption habits and help save the planet?

“People who have changed the world, have not needed much clothing. That is why you can change the world using Downy so that the clothes last longer in your closet and not the environment.”

This touching campaign raises a big concern: the way we dispose from our clothes can truly affect our planet.

According to a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry produces 53 million tons of fiber each year, of which more than 70% ends up in landfills or bonfires and less than 1% is used for recycling.

Moreover, more than half of the disposable fashion production is eliminated in less than a year. A truckload of clothes is wasted every second around the world, wasting energy and resources.

Harming the earth, eating out natural resources A United Nations report estimates that 7,500 liters of water is needed to make one pair of denim/jeans, the equivalent of water drunk by a human for seven years. Water is essential for all stages of clothing production, and is also essential for applying dyes and chemicals. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, ninety-three billion cubic meters of water is used by the textile industry each year.

And it’s not only water! Oil, which is used to fabricate polyester, a synthetic fiber that has become in the last two decades the most used material in ready-to-wear because it is inexpensive and more resistant than cotton, is not a renewable resource.

Truth is, the biggest environmental impact of fashion is not related to raw materials, production or transportation, but to washing clothes. Both because of the water and energy used, but also because of the water and soil pollution it causes.

Indeed, textile fibers contain chemicals, mainly detergents from laundry or perfumes, and microplastics, contained in polyester or acrylic polymers. These particles are released into the oceans during washing and take decades to degrade. More than a third (35%) of the microplastics released into the oceans come from washing textiles, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Due to the toxic chemicals from clothes production that are regularly dumped in the Citarium river for instance, millions of Indonesians can’t drink from “the world’s dirtiest river” where pollution roams freely unless they want to get poisoned.

Saving brand’s “image” while sabotaging the planet Destroying unsold items, mostly by burning them and turning them into smoke is a common practice for luxury brands. The luxury brand Burberry destroyed in 2017 clothes and cosmetics worth more than 31 million euros to protect its brand. “To put an item on sale is to devalue the product,” said the British brand. And why they wouldn’t send them to charitable associations? Because it “ruins the image”.

So it is not okay to ruin the image but perfectly understandable to ruin the planet?

Research Survey

Hello!

I'm 23 and from the UK. I'm looking to gain some insight into the way us sustainable fashion lovers shop for a personal project :) Any answers would be amazing and so helpful!

(if this is not the appropriate platform I do apologise).

  1. What age bracket are you: (16-24), (25-40), (41+).
  2. What city/region do you live in?
  3. Are you fully employed/Part-time/A Student/Self Employed/Other?
  4. Do you shop second-hand clothing?
  5. Do you shop vintage clothing?
  6. Do you buy from charity/thrift shop?
  7. Is there anything you want that charity/thrift shops do not offer?
  8. Approximately, how much do you spend on clothing a month?
  9. Do you prefer to buy clothing from a physical store, from online or both?
  10. Rate these in order of priority: Price, Environment, Quality, Style/Trend
  11. Do you use platforms such as Depop/eBay to buy clothing?

Thanks! :)

We need to increase our sign ups: www.slowfashionseason.com - even if you are already practicing this it is good to sign up and show the world how many people are calling for change.

Spread the word! Tomorrow we are doing on online action where there are people from all over the world taking a stand. Check it out here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zkHL960yki2-deT9XGqqq4i1Dffr9rrnx_SJ25OkwNo/edit?usp=sharing

Balance is my belief. If you can identify, PLEASE connect with me!

I FULLY support BLACK LIVES MATTER and ALL things related!!

I know there is A LOT going on in the world to say the least and asking you to test my prototype may seem completely pointless but I think being mindful of our world is purposeful but focusing on the good and doing good is how we can each do our part to contribute to rebuilding as now is the time.

However, please tell me how someone like myself who is building something that truly matters with the belief that balance of life and living harmoniously with this planet can reach my minimum goal of early adopters to test my prototype and give feedback? I ONLY NEED 22 MORE PEOPLE!

I am striving to create a world where you, the consumer can wear your values on your sleeve, literally by using the top marketplace for sustainable fashion. I believe that fashion doesn’t need to destroy our planet but rather improves it.

I don’t know any other way as this is my path. I need to build this for myself, for you, for our world and all our futures. Please connect with me to test my prototype. I need your help! THANK YOU!!

Boyish Jeans: An Update. (It's Long, and Angry. Again.)

This is a PART TWO: Here's a link to part one. T;Dr from Post 1: Boyish Jeans feature exclusively thin women, and almsot exclusively white women, with the near-complete exclusion of black women. They have responded extremely poorly to these criticisms and have made delayed and half-hearted responses to pressure to comment on the BLM movement. Racism and exclusion has no place in sustainable fashion!

PART TWO:

Since part 1, Boyish has continued to be very active on their social media.

On 6/3: Boyish made an IG post in a series of slides saying

- "We will do better <3"

- "What we currently do: Post all different ethnicities in our feed./ What we will do better: We will incorporate more POC in our feed, more frequently".

- "What we currently do: we support numerous organizations that help people like Generation Her & Midnight Mission through our Cool To Care events. / What We Will Do Better: We will support more organizations who specifically help the black community".

- "What we currently do: We donate to organizations that help the environment and women's rights like Solar Sister which helsp black women in Africa. What we will do better: We will donate to organizations who support the black community."

- "What we currently do: We constantly share info and educate on how to live sustainably and consciously./ What we will do: We will educate and encourage change on how to support the black community."

- "What we currently do: All people matter to us. Most importantly Mama Earth, if we don't put the Earth first we won't have a place for all humans./ What we will do better: Black lives do matter to us so we will be more specific in helping this community."

On 6/4 they made a post all the black creators they have worked with over the years (fewer than 10 women) as well as some they "admire" but have not yet worked with.

They have also continued to feature several black models. If this will continue after the heat has been taken off of them, we will have to see.

These posts received a LOT of criticism (though the most critical and most liked comments have been deleted and blocked, including my own). The criticism included the following:

- Approx. 10-12 out of 880 of their IG posts contained BIPOC women, around 1%, and only 3 in the 12 months. Saying "We currently post all different ethnicities" felt like a way to deny cuplability. The post showing all they've "worked with" felt like more finger-pointing and hand-waving, but if you look at their actual feed, it's literally >98% white women. That's not diversity. Further, Trotting out the small handful of black models they have worked with as evidence that theyre "actually fine and don't have a problem" is absolutely disgusting. They have still not acknowledged the criticism that they grossly underrepresent minorities, just that they know we "want to see more".

- They have not said a word about their sizeist practices, and no mention of having more diverse body types of models have been mentioned, despite that this criticism has been raised many times.

- There is no evidence that they have ANY BIPOC people on staff or in their executive leadership, either in articles or on LinkedIn. No response from Boyish has been made to this claim. Their CEO is a white male. There is also no evidence that any BIPOC people were consulted on their instagram posts or on their initiatives, despite that this was also suggested many times. Tokenism in the form of featuring models is a step in the right direction but it should not be the ONLY step. The fact that this was permitted to occur means that they have a gross systemic bias in their company that NEEDS to be corrected, and they do not understand that on a corporate level.

- To say that "Mama Earth" is more important than the BLM movement is a way to deflect criticism by saying "Well yes we were insensitive to keep advertising our clothes with only white girls during these troubled times but we're doing the bigger work here so it doesn't matter". But it DOES matter. It's insanely insensitive and inappropriate. They did not respond to these criticisms either.

- They have not made any mention of the steps they are taking to educate themselves, only that they're going to "continue to educate others" on how to better help the black community. Given everything they've said and done so far, I have absolutely no clue what makes them think they're qualified for that.

On 6/12 (?) they made another post stating: "Don't lose focus or forget about Mama Earth. If we don't have a planet, there's nothing to fight for."

OF ALL THE THINGS BOYISH HAS SAID, I FEEL THAT THIS IS PERHAPS THE MOST EGREGIOUS. Here's why:

- First: Causes are not a competition. Children dying of cancer are not inherently more important eradicating malaria. Simialrly, reducing waste in manufacturing is NOT MORE IMPORTANT than BLM. IT IS NOT. And to say so is coming from a place of extreme privilege, where they are NOT afraid of being killed in their beds, where they have extra MONEY to spend on $200 jeans, where they have the extra mental SPACE and TIME to be able to care about the environment because they don't have to work 3 minimum wage jobs! From THEIR perspective the planet is more important because they are not impacted by systemic racism!

- Second: Systemic oppression of minorities and sustainability go hand-in-hand. On 6/13 (?) they made a post detailing how harmful manufacturing practices adversely affect poor minorities who are more likely to be exposed to toxic chemicals from manufacturing plants, leading to higher rates of asthma. Yes, this is a problem, but what they fail to understand is that improved sustainability doesn't just improve the quality of life for black people, improved quality of life for black people WILL improve sustainability. If the only pair of shoes that a family can afford is terrible quality and will need to be replaced every 3 months, that is the pair of shoes they will buy, sustainable or not. If they are able to rise out of poverty, which was imposed upon them by systemic racism, then they will be more likely to afford products that ARE sustainable (like your $200 JEANS Boyish!), and have the time, energy and income to invest in eco-friendly practices like solar panels, longer-lasting products, etc. Furthermore, black voter suppression has LONG been a problem, and if they are allowed to vote for sustainable policies then more the better! We NEED to be supporting the poor and the oppressed because it WILL make things better for everyone! We cannot relegate "sustainability" to the sphere of the privileged! If we target the root of systemic inequality we may have a chance at also addressing the root of ecologic damage- namely, capitalism and hyperconsumerism. But a brand that is aggressively pushing its jeans wouldn't want to hear that, would it?

- Third: IF Boyish Jeans cared so much about spreading their "sustainability" as far and wide as possible, why do their jeans cost $168-$188?? I am aware that sustainable clothes are more expensive to produce but really? Nearly $200? In an interview with Boyish Jeans CEO Jordan Nodarse by WWD in 2019, the article states "[Nodarse] admits that sustainability is also driven by efficient practices... Boyish Jeans employs recycled cotton from leftovers coming from its own industrial cycle, as well as from other facilities in Thailand... The material is blended with other green fabrics including Lenzing’s Tencell lyocell obtained from wood pulp ... The company also leverages sustainable washing techniques, with laundries going through two to three wash cycles instead of the traditional six. " These do not, to me, sound like practices that should quadruple the price of jeans, thereby making them completely inaccessible to large portions of the population. Figuring out what Boyish jeans' exact revenue is is difficult, but considering they just expanded to Europe, we can guess that they're doing pretty well for themselves. One website estimates their revenue at $5 million annually, another at $27 million annually, but I have no way of knowing if these are in any way accurate. Nonetheless, we can postulate that if they really cared about making their jeans have the maximal sustainable impact, they would either lower the prices of their jeans so more people could buy tem OR donate more of the profits. You can't have it both ways. If they care so much about the environment that they feel the need to aggressively advertise during COVID and BLM, shouldn't they also be making larger sacrifices? The same they're asking of us??

- Trying to suck attention away from the BLM movement in order to sell JEANS is....horrifying. It's blithely sipping Kombucha while your neighbor's house is burning down and saying "Ok yeah your house is on fire, that sucks, but what about what all that smoke is doign to that atmosphere? Why aren't you more upset about that?". It's privileged, hot nonsense, and said with a smugness and self-satisfaction that we cannot endorse. YES the environment matters. But to support another cause does not detract from that cause either. Progress is NOT a zero-sum game. It's all part of the same, bigger fight and we should not throw each other under the bus for our own causes- especially if that cause is being used to push products and make money.

So, no. I still won't be supporting Boyish and they have a LONG way to go. I care very deeply about sustainabiltiy and fair labor practices but it is not the ONLY thing I care about, and I understand that the larger systems at play affect not only social justice but ecologic justice as well.

Clothes purchase Poll!

Just going to put it out there.....I don't buy second-hand clothes. I don't want to and I think that's OK. There is something nice about new things. There are a lot of people (PC people, I think) that won't admit this because it seems against all the sustainability trends. I think you can buy new and still be sustainable. So be brave, be honest in the poll. Am I really in the minority? NOTE the poll is specifically aimed at sustainability reasons not style preference or cost factors (although these may be secondary considerations).

How to not come across as a greenwasher?

Hi all,

Absolutely love this sub and its informed me so much about sustainable fashion!

I recently started my own tshirt brand that uses various print on demand services. Due to the slow nature of business during Covid and having come across this sub, I decided to look for better, more eco friendly alternatives as my base product.

Of all the companies that I have come across, I found one fulfilment company that used DTG printing with water based ink on Stanley/Stella organic cotton tshirts. The more I read about Stanley/Stella and their supply chain, the more inclined I am to start using them as my base product. And the fulfilment company I plan to use-they use recycled paper and biodegradable packaging, so that's helping the cause of not littering the planet with more single use plastic. Overall, it sounds like a good idea on paper - tshirt brand thats sustainable and affordable.

Now, this is where my question comes in. How do I market my site and brand without coming across as I am greenwashing? Use of terms like "eco-friendly", "sustainability", "environment friendly" all sounds very buzzwordy given how liberally and inappropriately they've been used by brands like H&M and Zara. It can put off anyone if they go to the site to see something listed for $40+shipping when a lot of sustainable clothing items by big brands have been always priced a lot higher.

How can I come across as a genuine sustainable fashion brand rather without taking anything away from this very important movement of fashion sustainability?

Or perhaps, let me put it this way - what would convince you to buy a clothing item from a website/brand you've never heard of thats saying its environmental friendly?

Any input/feedback is appreciated! For the time being I am using 100% organic cotton tees that are supplied by a company that is WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) - certified,so its all sweatshop free production with water based/eco friendly ink. Feel free to check it out at www.onecuppatee.com

Environmental T-shirts - 100% Cotton or is there something better? and printing a logo on them?

Hey all! I would love to produce some t-shirts for sale with my mom's store logo on them. I initially was interested in using t-shirt that are made from partially recycled water bottles or even fishing nets taken from the ocean, but I am learning about micro-plastics from the washing process which makes me apprehensive about using those.

I am now thinking about 100% cotton t-shirts, because though they take a lot of water to produce, you can have the t-shirt for years and years and wash it tons of times without anything going back into the washing machine water, correct? IDK if that makes it better for the environment, though..

Anyone have any help for sustainable t-shirts that have a nice feel? As a bonus, anyone have the most sustainable method of putting logos onto the t-shirts? I truly would appreciate any and all info you have! Thanks! :D

Help - planning on replacing shirts and need advice about fabric!

I currently own some old shirts that will soon need replacing, and am looking for advice about what fabric/material will best suit my needs:

I want something which is loose, flowy, breathable and not too easily wrinkled.

Of what I own: - I have found the cotton and linen shirts are too structured, rigid and in constant need of an iron and I don't reach for them as often as I thought. (I have bought loose and fitted cuts in these materials, and neither meet my needs) - My old cheap polyester shirts I wear constantly and have the loose flowy/lack of structure I want, but by god do they stink after one wear.

I'm trying to avoid plastic based fabrics going forward.

Thanks!

How to start practicing sustainability with baby steps in 2020 ?

World Environment Day Memo

Sustainability in Fashion is a mandate now. If understood well, we all together can create a favourable impact in Fashion industry, arguably second most polluting sector.

Starting from how the crop is produced to how it's dyed to how it's made as a garment to how is it sold - there are environmental and human rights issues at different levels in the production and logistics side of garment industry. It may seem daunting at first to most.

However it is important to bring a behavioural shift in how we perceive and consume fashion.

The three basic steps to follow sustainable fashion are :

  1. REDUCE the buying spree. Invest in pieces you will treasure. Buy from ethical labels who respect human rights and practise fair trade. If it’s beyond your price bracket, buy from local handloom shops.

  2. REPEAT your loved garments. You bought them with love for a reason. Don’t hesitate repeating them even if you have posted it on Gram. Be confident and proud repeater. Show your creativity with styling it differently.

  3. RECYCLE your old garments. Give them a new life by mending or reconstructing. Your skirt wouldn’t mind being your top, trust us.

Pro Tip - Support local economy by buying local and decreasing carbon footprints. Go to a nearby tailor and show your creativity by getting your outfits customised. Gamcha towel can be used as blouse; think about it.

Your one small step can bring the change you want to see.

Together let us change for better in the way we consume fashion , shall we ?

Collective efforts win.

Staiy - Introducing ourselves to help people who were in the need for a place to shop sustainable and make a change in their consumption habbits rather than to do self promotion

Hi everyone! We would like to introduce ourselves since we launched Staiy very recently, in september of last year. Very often we want to start making more conscious purchases, buy from sustainable brands, inform ourselves about brand's stories to know exactly if we can trust them in their commitment of being sustainable. From this idea of shaping the #LifeStyleOfTheFuture we created a platform where you can find many sustainable brands each verified by a questionnaire (each question linked to 2 SDGs ) to test their level of sustainability. I hope it can help every person who wants to make a change through their consumption and buy sustainable fashion without giving up on style. If you have any question please don't hesitate to contact and talk with us.

a different take on sustainable fashion

tl/dr: buy good stuff, youll need to buy less in the long run and itll impact your wallet and the environment less

i know that a lot of sustainable fashion brands are coming out because of the massive increase in awareness, but a lot of stuff seems counter-intuitive that doesnt seem to be crossing a lot of minds here. denim and footwear seem to be especially looked over. high quality, raw denim is a bigger investment to your wallet and to the environment upfront, but doesnt need as much washing and can be repaired when holes form and doesnt need to be thrown away. the same goes for footwear. one pair of good boots, like red wings or allen edmonds, can be conditioned and repaired and even resoled when the sole wears out, meaning that theyll last you a lot longer in the long run if you treat them right and get them repaired, also meaning that their overall environmental impact is a lot less than buying several products that can't be repaired and ultimately end up in a landfill

I am DONE with Boyish Jeans. (Long post)

Hey y'all. This has been getting under my skin for a while now but it's come to a head in the last few days. I'd love to hear your perspective.

I have long been looking for a good US-based sustainable jeans company to support (that's not Everlane) for a while now. It's hard to find. When I found out about Boyish I was super excited- a sustaible denim co from LA? Awesome! I went to their website and was surprised to discover that they feature only extremely tall/thin models. This was disappointing to say the least but I thought, whatever. Then I discovered that they do not list the fit info for their jeans, just the length. So they don't show you what the jeans look like on curvier women and they don't list the fit for different sizes...How am I supposed to know how the jeans are going to fit?? They're online only!

So I went to their IG to see if I could find more info, and maybe some examples of non-supermodels wearing their jeans. To my dismay, their feed consists literally 100% of size 0-2 models. I scrolled back for hundreds and hundreds of posts, and there was perhaps ONE single post that featured a woman larger than a size 2 (and she was maybe a 4/6). Something else became quite evident to me during my scrolling too- they have a MAJOR diversity problem. Going back about 100 posts I did not see ONE. SINGLE. BLACK. WOMAN. Well, perhaps one of their more recent posts maybe could possibly have been a black woman but they showed about 4 inches of her torso and none of her face. At around post 90 there was one woman who might be mixed but it's hard to tell. There were a small handful of Asian/Latina girls mixed in but the vast majority (~80%) were white, white, WHITE white white. I was shocked. Shocked.

I switched over to their tagged posts- it was more of the same. It was also extremely curated, leading me to believe that they are clearly untagging themselves from "off-brand" posts. Row after row after row of skinny white women, hardly a skin tone darker than "medium". I was just disgusted.

Looking back through the posts they have received consistent if mild criticism regarding their lack of diversity in both size and color, and their response has always been "we're working on it <3". On 5/31 as all other sustainable brands that I follow were making statements regarding the BLM movement and what actions they are taking, Boyish continued to make post/stories featuring their products and white women instead. They received backlash for this and for their lack of diversity and insensitivity but did not respond.

The next day 6/1 they made a post saying simply "We are heartbroken and saddened by the current events. Boyish has always been an equality brand of all people on Mama Earth, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender". This was not particularly well-received as glossed over the criticism of their exclusion of WOC and their insensitivity. They also did not actually reference the BLM movement or take any action (donation, links to specific organizations, etc). Furthermore, "equality for all" is not the issue, this is a blacks-specific issue and shoule be treated as such.

6/2 (yesterday) they posted a blackout tile with the title "Listening, # BlackLivesMatter". They were asked to delete the post as the IG algorithm has been driving large white corporation's voices with the BLM # on black tiles to the top, drowning out those with actual valuable information ands input, which continues even after the # has been changed. They did not do so and continued to not acknowledge the comments from the last few days.

Overall I'm just extremely disappointed with their behavior. Their exclusion of WOC demonstrates an obvious implicit bias at best, and is flagrantly racist at worst. Their milquetoast attempts to hand-wave the accusations of racism away feel pandering. The only "equality" Boyish has demonstrated is their even-handedness at taking our money. Abercrombie and Fitch CEO Mark Jeffreys was widely criticised in 2012 for intentionally excluding people from the brand who were too "fat", too "uncool" or too "unamerican". To quote Jeffreys, " Good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people... A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong." Boyish has shown us who they believe "good looking people" are, and who they think "belong" in their jeans, and it's not WOC and it's not anyone over a size 2. It makes me sad.

We need to hold sustainble corporations to a higher standard. Racism and sustainability go hand-in-hand. We cannot claim to care about the lives of people in third-world countries while contributing to systemic violence here. We should be recruiting everyone possible to the sustainable fashion force, not excluding them by saying they're not "on-brand" enough. Now is not the time to let racism slide- now is the time to speak up!

I have action items for Boyish if they really want to change. They are as follows.

1) STOP posting to social media. They need to stop talking and start listening.

2) Mandatory company-wide implicit bias training. This includes the CEO, the marketing team, the VP's, everyone.

3) The hiring of POC, not just models but in all levels of their business, including in their executive, marketing, design and PR teams.

4) Contacting experts in the field, BLM leaders, and their peers in the sustainable fashion industry to find out how they can do better.

5) Donations to the BLM cause or other organizations supporting POC

6) Once this is completed, then and only then they should return to social media and make a sincere apology and openly address the concerns that have been raised surrounding their lack of diversity and the specific changes they will be making. No tokenism "Look at this one black member we have on staff", actual change.

7) The change. Real, actual change. A dramatic shift in what we see on their feed and in their behavior.

Until then I will NOT be supporting Boyish Jeans and will be taking my money elsewhere.

Tl;Dr Boyish Jeans feature exclusively thin women, and almsot exclusively white women, with the near-complete exclusion of black women. They have responded extremely poorly to these criticisms and have made delayed and half-hearted responses to pressure to comment on the BLM movement. Racism and exclusion has no place in sustainable fashion!

I used to be a crazy shopaholic. Thankfully with age got some wisdom and found my passion - to give pre-loved fashion items a second chance. Bought this bag on a C2C marketplace and decorated with my own made cicada. I believe it looks way better now 🀞🀩 do you have any examples of your own?

The rich get richer, the poor get poorer

When the tech giants of GAFA do NOTHING to help the people who made their existence relevant. We rely on the tech and services, but isn't it time to boycott in preference for your local business?
