Bamboo vs viscose vs rayon?
I’m a bit confused about the differences between these three. Apparently viscose and rayon can be made from bamboo, so does that mean that any fiber/fabric labeled “bamboo” is one of these two? Or is 100% bamboo something different?
The reason I ask is because I am looking to buy some natural yarn to make my own socks and one of the brands I found is made out of 100% bamboo fiber. When I felt it, it was super soft and felt pretty similar to something made out of viscose/rayon so it just had me wondering if maybe the labeling was misleading and it’s really viscose/rayon? Or is 100% bamboo a different thing?

Shoes?
Hello! I have a pair of dr Martens which are a couple of years old but in great condition, other than one of the soles being broken. I am being gifted a new pair of shoes for Christmas, but don't want to throw these ones away, even though I no longer want to keep them. One of them would probably need resoling, so I don't know if charity shops would take them. Any advice? :)

Sustainable plus size fashion brands
I want to build a capsule wardrobe with sustainable clothes. I found a lot of brands whose designs I really liked but they all have one thing in common: they rarely go beyond a EU44 (US14 or UK18). And it is really frustrating.
I have found three brands so far that are size inclusive: Girlfriend Collective, Universal standard and Loud bodies. Some items do match my taste bit not all of it and quite simply put I'd like to have more choice.
I'd like to know if you know any good sustainable fashion brands that are size inclusive.

My question: How do you define sustainable??

If you really want to spoil me, drop a link of your most liked or perceived sustainable brand / project in the comments.. Many THNX!

Why You Should Invest in Girls Designer Clothes
It's that time of year when I start fantasising about the warmer months ahead. Each individual has their own coping strategy, but I like researching Spring and Summer fashion trends for girls designer clothes and planning new outfits.
This year, a few designer companies for girls designer clothes are on my radar, which emerged when I became more interested in ways we can minimise our environmental impact as a family, especially my 7-year-old daughter, who loves fashion and is quite impressionable at the moment.
Today, I'd want to highlight some of the advantages of purchasing girls' designer clothes and how it may help us do our part to assist the environment.
Nowadays, we tend to overlook the worth and comfort of well-tailored items and are more readily swayed by inexpensive clothing from shops that do not strive for quality and durability but rather cater to mass consumption.
And it's simple to understand why: we all know that our children, especially girls, outgrow their clothes before they've had an opportunity to wear them!
Fashion has grown considerably more accessible in recent years, yet rapid fashion has significant social and environmental consequences. Choosing girls' designer clothes when purchasing a few basics for your daughter to wear on a daily basis is a smart choice for many reasons.
Fast fashion is inexpensive for a reason. Originally intended to keep prices low for budget consumers, the world of fast fashion has grown in popularity, and as its popularity grows, more corners are taken to save a pretty penny.
Fast fashion for your kids is less attractive due to a combination of poor-quality materials, hurried designs, cheap and unethical manufacturing techniques, and environmental costs. Fast fashion is not necessarily a wise purchase.
While adults are increasingly turning away from quick fashion, there seems to be a reluctance to have an open discussion about high-quality girls designer clothes. Of course, there are additional factors to consider when it comes to clothing for our daughters.
People often lament how fast their girls outgrow their clothing or declare that their daughters are much too noisy to have anything too good. As a result, we conclude that throwaway fashion is acceptable for our girls, although not ideal for ourselves.
But is rapid fashion truly the greatest option for our daughters?
This article will reveal why you should buy girls designer clothes for your growing young lady.
For the sake of the environment
Our views about "quick fashion" and casual shopping have shifted dramatically in recent years. We're less interested in filling our closets with inexpensive clothes and stockpiling plastic bottles and more concerned about the environmental effect of our purchasing habits.
We've realised that the items we purchase for our closets, cabinets, and refrigerators have eco-ethical dimensions. While the low prices of fast fashion may initially be appealing, resounding questions about where the garments come from and the labour conditions of those who make them, as well as the carbon footprint of the clothes that we buy, quickly reveals that the pennies saved are not always worth the cost to the environment.
In fact, fashion is now generally acknowledged as the world's second-largest polluter, behind only oil.
Luxury girls designer clothes last longer and are produced responsibly. Unlike cheap fashion, which is mass-produced and intended to be worn out fast, luxury girls designer clothes are manufactured in small quantities and last a long time.
It's pretty basic math: the more you spend on your girls designer clothes, the fewer items you end up purchasing and the less effect you have on filling landfills.
Girls designer clothes may be passed down through siblings and friends or resold on frugal websites. The additional pennies compensate for the peace of mind knowing you're making a wise environmental investment.
For the sake of lifespan
One of the most prevalent misconceptions about children's clothing is that "children outgrow their clothes; therefore, there's no sense in paying too much money on them." And there's some truth to it.
Children, especially girls, are continuously developing, and much more than adults, a girl's size will vary dramatically over time.
Kids are also much more active than adults, running, leaping, and rolling about whether they are dressed in fancy clothing or not. But is it the whole story, or is this a fake economy?
Whether it's food stains from overeager mealtimes, grass stains from a boisterous game of rounders or another faint stain you'd prefer not to know what it was, kids' clothing is always in need of a thorough wash.
However, washing wreaks havoc on low-cost garments. Budget fashion quickly comes apart after a few washes. Girls designer clothes, on the other hand, are of better quality and can withstand much washing. Luxury, well-made clothing endure longer and continues to look great, no matter how dirty your child gets.
When you need something really unique, here is the place to go. Whether your daughter is a little tomboy, a rowdy explorer, or a lover of fancy dress, there are moments when you require something a bit fancy.
A wedding, a significant family gathering, or your child's birthday – a child's social calendar is jam-packed with events that need something unique.
Investing in well-made, attractive luxury girls designer clothes ensures that you will never be caught off guard – whatever the occasion. Whether you choose a stunning designer gown or a lovely three-piece suit, investing in these special occasion necessities saves you a frantic rush to the shops.
Designer clothing may seem to be the domain of celebrity kids and trust-fund infants, but this couldn't be farther from the reality. Girls designer clothes is a wise investment for parents who want to save money, time, and the environment!
The Actual True Cost
How come children's clothing are so inexpensive on the main street? How does this happen? Who pays the difference? Someone somewhere must pay in some manner, whether it's in the quality of their working circumstances, their health, or their freedom. And, regrettably, someone is paying for you.
Garments made accessible by well-known brands are often manufactured in Asia for a fraction of the price they are sold for in stores.
By purchasing your girls' designer clothes locally from a designer, you are not only helping to decrease greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation, but you are also ensuring that fair wages are given to those who perform the hard labour. On top of that, you'll get beautifully designed and unique clothing at Kidieez, which your children will enjoy wearing every day.

Sustainabikity of cotton vs nodal (viscose)
Last year, I started a concerted effort to only buy natural fibers, and to really wear out my synthetic clothes before throwing them away. I've bought predominantly cotton and wool, as they're natural, comfortable and don't make me feel like I'm wearing a trashbag.
It's now time to replace my tattered underwear and socks, and I've found the search for natural fibers more diffocult than I thought. It's nearly impossible to find socks without at least a little bit of a synthetic stretch material in them, and underwear I like and that fits is also somewhat difficult to find without being "cotton blend" or "cotton stretch".
Which brings me to modal. Initially, when I read that viscose and modal are rayin, I dismissed it as a synthetic. Apparently it's not, and actually uses substantially less water than cotton during manufacture. While water usage is important, my initial reason for going all natural was to reduce microplastics and just wearing plastic in general.
My questions are as follows:
- Is cotton or modal/viscose better on water consumption?
- Is cotton or modal/viscose more degradable?
- Is it possible to find modal/viscose that does not also utilize spandex or other synthetics?
- Are there other types of viscose ot alternative fabrics that are superior to modal?
Thanks in advance for you help! I will crosspost to r/sustainability if it would be beneficial.

Is there such a thing as an ethical and sustainable Black Friday sale?
Once upon a time, I only bought clothes on sale. In my late teens, I loved nothing more than raiding the sale rack at SuprΓ© and digging through the bargain bin at City Beach, and I would save all year just to splurge on a shopping spree on Boxing Day. I used to be proud of the hauls I came home with, fast fashion binging on as much as I could with my little $100 kitty. It was less about what I bought and more about how much I could get.
In my early 20s, I was still addicted to sales, but I started dabbling in op-shopping. I was paying off a mortgage and working two jobs just to get by, so op-shopping was more of a necessity than a niche past time.
By my mid-20s, I was well on my way into the world of slow fashion, and I'd started educating myself on ethical wages and sustainable production. I was starting to understand quality over quantity, but I still had a fashion addiction. In 2016, I spent over $6500 on fashion and it pains me to share that. That's an overseas holiday or a Facebook marketplace car. My wardrobe spanned multiple rooms of the house, bags in storage, boxes under beds.

Best Fabrics and Environmental Anxiety
Before I start, yes I mostly do charity/thrift shopping and yes I try to buy only what I need. Most of my basics in my wardrobe are bamboo or sustainable cotton that I use until they are unuseable.
I'm really struggling to come to a decision about what fabrics I should and shouldn't spend money on- and even if there are NO perfect answers, I could do with some advice on how you others make the decision. For context I have severe anxiety with several neurodivergency diagnoses so I worry about everything single decision I make to the point of sometimes physical exhaustion and pain.
I just bought a jumper that I really like thats 50% recycled, but after I got home I started thinking about how it's polyester so even then the fibres will go into the wash, and maybe RPet isn't even that much better long term anyway. But that of course 100% natural wool has it's problems too, and is just generally harder to find available for purchase. I've spent two days going deep on comparison articles about the best fabrics and I'm geniunely on the verge of meltdown I think, and bloody hell it's just a jumper. I'm thinking about further finishing my wardrobe with some linen trousers and shirts, so that's something that doesn't seem to be too bad at least. Is anyone else in the decision paralysis situation I am? Have you been before and got out of it? Do I just start wearing leaves and live in a cave drinking rainwater? It seems easier XD

I’d like to get rid of some clothes and accessories that I do not wear anymore. I know selling or donating to the Salvation Army is a big solution.
However, I’ve seen a video where those places rather have items that would be more convenient to people in need. I.E. winter jackets, scarves, etc.
My biggest issues are gently worn bras (I’ve lost weight so I don’t need them anymore), damaged leather handbag and wallet.
What are somethings you have done to get rid of unwanted clothes?

Re-fitting clothes
I’ve been hesitant to get into stitching my clothes that don’t fit anymore (as i’ve put on weight) as well as clothes that have been given to me and are too big. I’m worried that once i change a clothing item, and then i lose weight/gain weight i won’t be able to change it again.
How many times can you re-stitch/sew/fit clothing? Like if i wanted to take a dress in then let it out as my weight fluctuates? Will i ruin my clothes?

What does your sustainable wardrobe look like?
A while back, I had to leave behind all of my clothing, but for pair of frayed jeans and a few t-shirts. I now have the money to begin rebuilding my wardrobe, but I want to be thoughtful about it this time around and limit myself to long-lasting, natural, and more sustainable basics. The problem is that I'm not really sure where to start.
I'm hoping to get ideas from other people's wardrobes, so if you could share what you deem to be you clothing essentials, how many you require, what your favourite pieces look like and where you purchased them, I'd very much appreciate it. Just any information on what you typically wear would be helpful.

Sustainable or maintainable?
Hey chaps. I wanted to pose a question about sustainable fashion that I have been thinking about for some time. We all know that a huge portion of the garments industry is “fast fashion.” However I think some “sustainable” brands are also considered fast fashion. For example I purchased some cactus leather sandals. They weren’t cheap and broke in six months. I can contrast this with a leather jacket I own. I’ve literally had this thing for ten years. It was extremely expensive, but I have had the need to buy a new one. It still looks great after all this time.
Now one is made of real leather and the other is made of cactus leather. One broke after six months and the other has lasted me ten years and can be repair if it get worn out. Which is more sustainable?
If the leather jacket is the sustainable route which brands should I buy from to has sustainable clothing?

Fav Non-Profits to Donate To?
Hi all! Noting that the holidays are right around the corner, I have been looking for some charities to have friends donate to (instead of buying me presents) within the sustainable fashion space. I did recently come across one called Remake which I love and did donate to but I am looking for more. What are some of your favs?

Does anyone know where to get heavy denim slim-fit mens jeans?
I constantly wear holes in the crotch of my jeans, even the loose fitting Levi’s 511s that I bought less than one month ago.
It’s super frustrating because while I try to repair them, they will inevitably wear out again around the stitch. Then I’m left with a pair of jeans which are perfectly fine except for a small but fairly crucial area.
I am looking for a pair of heavier denim jeans that will not wear out in a month, but rather last several years. I am willing to pay extra for this to save money and waste long term.
Ive looked at raw denim and Levi 501s but they are baggier than I like. I am not looking for skin-tight or skinny jeans, just a slim cut that follows the shape of my legs.
Does anyone have any advice for heavier slim-fit mens jeans, particularly available in Europe?

How have you experienced waste problem in the fashion industry?
For my BA Fashion design project, I want to focus on how the industry creates unnecessary waste from returned/ damaged products. This comes from something I’ve experienced myself, as I have worked at a brand that used to slash broken returned bags and clothing instead of fixing or donating. We are entering a national competition and I really want to do well so I was wondering what else I could include in my work.
I wanted to ask if anyone else has witness poor waste management from companies they used to work at e.g, dumping, slashing, burning etc. If so, what was it like? How much waste would you throw away? Why did the company do this?
This is so I can write a report alongside sketchbook :) anything helps, thank you!!!

So after looking through this subreddit I can see a lot of recycled garments which look amazing. This begs the question though. If you had the choice, would you rather recycle old clothing or buy new stuff from a sustainable provider? e.g. Hemp clothing or recycled plastics?

Synthetic materials in apparel: What are synthetics and what are they good for?
Here is a roundup of the three most common synthetic fibers you’ll encounter:
- Rayon
Of all synthetics, rayon should be the least controversial. In fact, some people don’t even consider it a true synthetic because it’s made from plant matter, but it goes through so many chemical processes, it’s often listed as artificial.
When You Want Rayon: When you want the smoothness and drape of silk, but also want something that’s affordable, doesn’t hold odors easily, and wears cooler.
When You Don’t Want Rayon: Rayon can be a bit high-maintenance. Like silk, it typically requires hand-washing or dry cleaning. And you generally can’t iron it. On the upside, it sheds wrinkles easily (just hang the garment up overnight or, if you must, steam it). - Polyester
Nothing sounds worse than polyester clothing. Just the mere mention of it brings to mind all those sweaty and uncomfortable polyester suits during the 1970s (the ones in Saturday Night Fever? Yea, those were polyester).
When You Want Polyester: Since the fiber is hydrophobic, it works great for outerwear and gym clothes. It’s water repellant and, depending the weave structure, can also be breathable.
When You Want to Avoid Polyester: Polyester doesn’t always age that well, and depending on the fabric, it can make a garment look cheap. - Elastane
The Atlantic has a great article this month by Amanda Mull, which talks about how jean manufacturers have been smuggling spandex into their clothes and marketing them as masculine to gender-sensitive men
When You Want Elastane: When you want a bit of stretch to a garment.
When You Want to Avoid Elastane: Elastane is only ever added to a garment when it needs to be stretchy. So the only time you’d want to avoid it is if you dislike stretchy garments.
Synthetics have their advantages and disadvantages. However, as sourcing and certification of natural materials in your clothes are advancing fast, many natural alternatives can be found - especially sustainable fashion brands will emphasise these materials.

Patagonia doesn’t use the word ‘sustainable.’ Raising the question: is it OK to use the word sustainable?
Interesting read by Beth Thoren, Environmental Action & Initiatives Director at Patagonia.
Patagonia is avoiding the term. Love their transparency. The article also stresses the importance of insetting vs. offsetting - something that's on O My Bags priority list too.
With growing trends in greenwashing and consumer awareness, is offsetting a brands carbon emission enough? Is one brands action enough to change the industry? What do you think?
