Does anyone have a recommendation for a sustainable pair of jeans overalls? I’m looking for a classic women’s style. My longtime search for a secondhand pair has been unfruitful.

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

For Days - seeking further insight

I've been so tempted to buy a 'Take Back' bag from the brand For Days just to declutter my torn/moth-holed clothes and scraps of rags that I can't otherwise donate. But something in my gut is holding me back because I just want to make sure it's going to a legit recycling process. They are constantly bringing A+ to their marketing as their ads always pop up on my instagram when I'm watching stories/scrolling. But I don't know how honest and great they are past their marketing...

I'm suspect of two things that have been a red flag in my eyes:

  1. They never post photos or reels on their instagram of their actual recycling process. But they post frequently other random marketing posts. Other legit places trying to help the planet such as 4Ocean constantly show transparency of their clean-up and recycling processes.
  2. I took a peak at their employee reviews on Glassdoor (the job review website) and only 3 current/past employees have posted a review with 2 of the 3 giving a 1 star sharing that there's no true recycling and that the company is really good at greenwashing. How disheartening. I can only take that stuff with a grain of salt but who would falsely post that if at least there's not a portion of truth?

I really want to get rid of my stuff 'the right way' that I've been hanging onto for way too long but am weary that the For Days process isn't any different than just dumping my stuff in my own trash bin. I don't care about the 'credit' you get after you purchase a bag... I just want to get rid of my scraps responsibly. Does anybody else have any other insight on this company or have used them before for the same reasons?

What is ESG Investing? Definition, Examples & Strategies Types

ESG investing can be defined as investing that encompasses sustainability principles along with ESG criteria in the investment decision-making process. At the very core, ESG investing is about influencing a positive change in society by fostering a sustainable investing environment for investors. ESG stands for environmental, social, and governance, and each category broadly implies:

  • The environmental factors that are used to measure how business practices impact the world’s ecosystems.
  • The social factors involve the well-being and safety of employees and how businesses interact with the communities they function in.
  • Governance factors enable organizations to evaluate the ethics and longevity of their management.

ESG investing incorporates environmental, social, and corporate governance factors that impact an organization's overall performance. By evaluating ESG factors, investors gain a holistic view of the firms they back, thereby mitigating the risk and identifying new opportunities for growth.

My brand is shutting. Need advice!

My sustainable brand ( https://clime.studio/ ) is shutting :( Despite having a tonne of happy customers, the Indian market remains challenging for sustainable fashion due to the lack of awareness and price sensitivity. We haven't been able to balance our margins & cash flow with the marketing resources we do have. And as a very small team with very limited resources, we realized that we can push against the current for much longer.

We do have about 650 unsold garments & about 1000metres of fabric still in stock. Does anybody have any suggestions on how & where we can sell these? We'd be happy to try internationally too.

I currently only know some sustainable brands, but that are really "sustainable brands", for their entire process, like the threads and labels and packaging, and I'm not talking about recycled polyester because that's not sustainable because it's still plastic and it releases microplastics while being used.

Why do sustainable clothes look terrible on me?

I have been trying to get into sustainable fashion because I want my clothing to last longer and not be as terrible for the planet, but I'm running into a speedbump. I tried ordering shorts from a couple brands (Pact and Outerknown), spent the time to measure myself and use their sizing charts, and when they finally shipped to me both shorts don't flatter me at all even though the pictures on the website looked alright.

Not trying to be too sassy about this (though not going to lie I'm pretty frustrated given the shorts from Outerknown in particular were NOT cheap), but am I supposed to accept looking grungy if I want to shop sustainable? I wish there were local sustainable stores so I could better see what these articles of clothing look like on my body before I buy, but it seems like all of them are either online-only or are nowhere near my location. Was never a huge online shopper in the first place and only tried it because I wanted to make a difference, feeling really bummed out about the whole situation.

Do you remember the moment you first decide to adopt a green living habit? What motivates you to finally make the change? And how far and well have you kept that habit?

My moment was after I binge-watching 6 episodes of BBC's Blue Planet, and seeing the mother whale mourning her still-born calf. I urge my whole family to stop using bottle water after that.

Currently doing interviews and surveys to understand what FIRST trigger individuals to do it the green way and contribute to a more sustainable planet.

Will hemp fabric ever be affordable?

Even with increased demand, and few legal barriers hemp fabric is one of the most expensive textiles in the world. Do you think the price will ever come down, or do you think hemp missed its moment long ago?

Here is some background info and history on the legalities and red tape surrounding the fiber - https://shopvirtueandvice.com/blogs/news/hemp-fabric

Thrifting when you have no sense of smell

I want to start thrifting, but I have no sense of smell. I heard some people say their clothes from thredup or Plato’s closet smell bad. Is this true in your experience, and if so, how do you remove the smell? I’m just paranoid about going around smelling oddly without realizing

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Have any of you guys heard of this brand called “Recycled”. They sell vintage tees and reworked pieces that are really cute! I want to buy something from them, but I can’t find any reviews or extra information about them online..

So, has anyone bought something from there and what do you guys think?

Peer-to-peer clothing rental marketplace to reduce fast fashion!!

Hi everyone! I created a peer-to-peer clothing rental company called rotateyourcloset.co (Airbnb but for your clothesπŸ‘—) that helps reduce fast fashion and extends the life cycle of clothes!

We aim to reduce the one time wears of trendier pieces (wedding guest dresses, vacation outfits, etc!) by letting people rent clothes in their closet out to others! We also support local pickup so you can leverage closets that already exist in your community with minimal environmental impact!!

Would love to have this community check it out, and please share any feedback! πŸ’žπŸ«ΆπŸ»♻️

Eco friendly bulk trucker hats

Launching a swim and lifestyle brand. I have some trucker hats with our name on it that I get asked about all the time when I wear them. I'd like to order more to give to friends and family, and possibly sell.

All the eco friendly/recycled truckers I've seen are in very earthy colors or have a seam down the middle. I'm looking for the classic, sort of Aviator Nation style hats if possible.

Is anyone familiar with a company who could supply these? Thanks!

Looking for people interested in learning more about sustainable fashion (paid opportunity)

Hi!

I'm looking for stylish people with loads of cool clothes but willing to change up and learn sustainable ways of upycling. What do you think of using your online presence to help us talk about textile waste and the decolonization of fashion?

I created "Upcycle Crush!" with the OR Foundation (an NGO based in Ghana fighting textile waster). It is an interactive game that brings together stylish and eco-responsible people. We will select four entrants comprised of upcyclers and consumers participating in three online "dates" and help us create a social media campaign to promote sustainable practices.

Feel free to check out more information - and apply - in the link below! (And it pays!!!)

Fast fashion sucks. This is why.

It's time to talk about the elephant in the room. Shein has recently become the word's largest fast fashion retailer, making Zara look like slow fashion. I never thought I'd say the words 'Zara' and 'slow fashion' in the same sentence... This is clearly a serious problem we need to talk about.

The Shein app was downloaded 196 million times last year and now, its fast fashion sales are outperforming Amazon, Zara, H&M, ASOS and Boohoo. Shein has also reportedly told its investors that it plans to double its revenue by 2025, which is crazy. That's an absurd amount of fast fashion making its way out into the world, and most of it is the same price as an almond latte in Melbourne. If you can buy a dress for the same price as a coffee, what does that say about how it's made and what it's made with? I'll answer that for you - nothing good.

This is a big problem for fashion and an even bigger problem for the planet. It's time to roll up our sleeves and take a stand against fast fashion giants like Shein because our environmental clock is ticking.

There's no easy way to say this: fast fashion sucks. This is why...

Clothing production has doubled since the year 2000 but we're keeping clothing only half as long as we used to, and in the U.S alone, over 2000 pieces of clothing are thrown away every second.

We're throwing away clothing after an average of seven to ten wears, and two-thirds of all fashion is made with polyester, the world's dirtiest and deadliest fabric.

Over 95% of Shein's fast fashion is made from petroleum-derived synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon or acrylic, and they're releasing an average of 1000 new styles every single day.

Every time polyester is washed, tiny plastic micro-fibers shed into the run-off water and make their way into our oceans, and fashion is now responsible for 35% of the plastic micro-fibers found in the ocean.

I could go on and on and on with facts and stats about the environmental impact of fast fashion, but what we all need to hear, are solutions. So what do I think? How do we solve the fast fashion crisis Shein has created and how do we slow fashion down?

Well, if you're running a fashion brand, it's time to make some big decisions. Ditch polyester and synthetic fabrics and switch to natural, biodegradable materials. You can also design more consciously too, and step back from the hustle and bustle of timed releases - no one needs something new from you every single week. Explore releasing an annual collection or a core collection of staples that people want to wear more than seven to ten times, and educate your customers on the positive impact of slow fashion.

You can also focus your energy on selling through the stock you already have, before you decide to make more, and I can help you do that here.

If we're going to change the future of fashion - and the future of the planet - we need to band together as sustainable fashion brands and we need to make an impact with our clothes. Because fashion isn't bad - fast fashion is bad. Slow fashion is world-changing, and we need to see more of that!

Claire.

sustainable acid wash denim?

Hi all, I haven't bought new jeans in probably about 10 years but I'm really digging the revival of acid wash, except that it's a finish usually achieved with potassium permanganate, or PP, which is incredibly toxic to both workers and the environment. I've been trying to find PP-free "acid wash" jeans and.... failing.

I've found a bunch of press releases about new alternative acid wash technologies in the last 3-4 years: Officina+39 and their Oz-One Powder; Crescent BahΓΌmΓ n and their Blue Infinity dye process; Soko and their Lumia method of mimicking acid wash. But I'm not finding any brands that are actually using these new technologies yet.

Anyone know of brands that are using these chemicals/techniques? Or is it just truly that none of them have been adopted into actual consumer products yet?

Check out our marketplace/website concept

Hey everyone,

Some friends and me are working together in a startup class and we are trying to make sustainable and ethical fashion easier to support or buy. (making it affordable, convenient, and less of a hassle).

Our website rn is a small version of what we are hoping would become a bigger marketplace that only features clothing items and accessories that are made ethically and sustainably. We are hoping to offer an easy way to buy clothing that does good for our planet and the workers creating the items. We aren't large enough to have a fully detailed selection process. But once we have one it will be detailed on our website. Our goal rn is to see if there is a need for something like this; by seeing how many people interact with our website, so if this idea sounds helpful or useful to you here's the link to check us out. https://lastingfashion.wordpress.com

also would love to hear any feedback or suggestions either here or through the website :)

Does anyone know of any groups/ collectives that specialize in community outreach/ promotion for young designers trying to accept donations of old clothing?

Basically what I am asking for is a way/ platform to reach out to people in order to take their old clothes, fabric scraps, bags, etc. and use the materials to create new pieces from. I get by with my brand by making do with local donations and such, but I’m once again running low. I take the old clothes and such and make new fabric out of them by stripping them down into yarn. I recently had my first professional runway debut at VFW and since then I’ve been running low on supply. I’m not sure if this will help but I basically take anything (expect leather, my machine broke so I can work with it). My pieces have a lot of time and love put into them, and I’ve recently had to start cutting up my own clothes to make ends meet.

TLDR: I’m just trying to stop clothes from being thrown away and Id like to reach out to people who have clothes to give away so i can turn them into one of kind bespoke pieces for my next collection. If there’s any group or person out there reading this I’d like to take your old clothes and turn them into something new.

Thank you! This is my website if your curious about my process: Kurriizmatic.com

SFDR: Understanding EUs Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation

Organizations across the globe are integrating sustainable finances into their operations. As a part of the transition towards a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy, the European Commission has implemented new and updated regulations to strengthen its action plan on sustainable finance. The EU Taxonomy is regarded as the key component of the action plan. There are a handful of other regulations that are being introduced for organizations to get familiar with. One of those is the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, or SFDR assists in reorientating capital toward more sustainable businesses and increasing transparency on sustainability among financial institutions.

So how does the SFDR framework help in improving the transparency and sustainability of businesses within the European Union? Let's find out.

What is SFDR?

The first regulation set up by the EU, SFDR, or the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, aims to reorientate capital flow toward sustainable finance. SFDR provides transparency on sustainability within the financial market to prevent greenwashing.

How to get rid of lingerie?

I wanted to post in r/sustainability, but they’re closed to comments right now.

I’ve gone through my unmentionables and have a bunch to get rid of, and I don’t want to just throw them in the trash. I paid good money for a lot of them, and I’m not sure what to do with them.

I can’t donate them to any local thrift stores (I’ve checked), I don’t compost and they aren’t all made with natural fibers anyway, and every website I’ve looked at only mentions bras and underwear, nothing about actual lingerie.

Are there any programs or websites that will let me send them in and they’ll repurpose them or something?

The Essence of Serious Sustainable Fashion: True Affordability

When we talk about serious sustainable fashion, one key aspect that often gets overlooked is affordability. To truly make a positive impact on the fashion industry and the environment, sustainability must be accessible to all. It's time to prioritize true affordability in sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion should not be a luxury reserved for the privileged few. It should be within reach for everyday individuals who are passionate about making conscious choices. By making sustainable options more affordable, we can encourage widespread adoption and create a real shift in the industry.

It's understandable that sustainable practices and materials can sometimes come with higher production costs. However, as consumers, we must hold brands accountable for fair pricing. This means demanding transparency in pricing structures and supporting brands that prioritize ethical practices without inflating prices unnecessarily.

Affordability doesn't mean compromising on quality or style. It means finding a balance between sustainability, cost, and accessibility. By investing in timeless pieces, and supporting brands that prioritize fair wages and responsible sourcing, we can build a wardrobe that aligns with our values without straining our budgets.

Let's remember that the goal of sustainable fashion is to create a positive impact on the planet and society. It's about making conscious choices that benefit everyone. So, let's advocate for serious sustainable fashion that is truly affordable and inclusive. Together, we can make a difference.
