Do any of you make your own clothes?

I want to get into tailoring with natural fibres. I’d feel more comfortable knowing exactly what materials were being used in my clothes and having control over the quality of stitching and craftsmanship.

I’m not a complete novice so I don’t think I’d find it too challenging, I’m fairly skilled at repairing clothes — was just wondering whether it’d be worth constructing entire garments from scratch!

Are there PFAS in H and M undergarments?

Hey everyone,

So I’ve have seen all the news with pfas in undergarments and I myself have hormonal problems ( been with a gyno and now I am being sent to a endocrinologist- having problems with my menstrual cycle for the past 2 years it’s really just on and off). I really wanted to reach out to the sustainable communities and check if H and m has pfa free undergarments such as bras and underwear. I’m really struggling to find some good brands and I guess a little bit on the cheap side- I personally prefer in store undergarments not online because the hassle to return to an online store that has no instore options is just annoying-so long story short does is H and m safe to buy underwear and bras from-I understand not sustainable but atleast pfa free or wouldn’t cause problems- I just need something safe- also what are some brands you have been buying safe undergarments from( pfa free no harsh chemicals? And if so- are you able to list them down below- instore undergarments I prefer the places where I can physically go buy the item -I know h and m got rid of pfas in 2013 I just wanted to double check with someone!

Qaushey - Sustainable Fabric

Hello Amazing people, We are Qaushey (Pronounced as: "Kaw-Shay"), an Indian Handlooms brand trying to make a difference in our own way. We can be found on www.qaushey.com in case anyone is looking for sustainable Indian Handloom clothing we are here and it is long lasting like any other heirloom.

Our "WHY" originates from the fact that there is so much mis-selling when it comes to Indian Handlooms and the difference we are making by taking this art to the world. This project is an our honest effort to make the intricate Indian arts available to everyone in the world at right price.

Handloom as an art is ~5000 years old and has at one time been the darling of Roman kings and queens. It has endured the test of time since then, especially in past few decades it has suffered the most. That being said, there is always a silver lining and there is slow shift towards sustainable fashion choices. It is really amazing to see that there is a Reddit group that is working hard towards the change that we intend to see in future. We are just borrowing the future from our kids and our intention should be to give them a clean sea to go and enjoy the blue waters. What makes us sustainable are few important points:

  1. Instead of synthetic fibres, such as polyester and nylon, we use all-natural fabric bases such as cotton, linen, silk etc, which decompose quickly. E.g., Cotton decomposes in as little as a week to 5 months. Synthetic fibres, on the other hand, take almost forever.
  2. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and acrylic, shed microfibers when they are washed, becoming a major source of water pollution.
  3. Our handloom weavers and handicraft artisans use plant or vegetable-based natural colours that are not harmful to the environment.
  4. The production of machine-made clothing requires a lot of water. For example, a pair of jeans takes 2,700 gallons of water to be manufactured. Water consumption in the handloom manufacturing process, on the other hand, is negligible.
  5. Our packaging is a cotton cover and a kraft paper mailing bag. They decompose very quickly leaving no traces behind harming Mother Earth.
  6. In process, uplifting the lives of grassroot level weavers and artisans who work hard to bring some of the most comfortable pieces to us.

Pls do reach out to us on [contactus@qaushey.com](mailto:contactus@qaushey.com) for enquiries. We ship to every geography. In case, you want us to design and custom make them for you, pls feel free to let us know. At an extra cost, we can get that done as well.

Cheers, Team Qaushey

Feedback on Our Sustainable Product Reviews

Hello all! I'm part of a startup focused on sustainability, and we've been working on something I think might interest you guys. Our goal is to present research-backed products from rated brands in a way that educates without overwhelming regular consumers who are new to sustainable shopping.

We've got around 26 brands rated so far, meaning not every product has full details yet. But here's what a complete entry looks like: Fully Rated Products Example (click view).

Our general product page can be found here: Products.

We'd love your feedback on how much detail is useful vs what might be too much. How do we balance being informative and not overloading with data? What aspects are most crucial when you're considering a sustainable purchase? Any and all feedback on how we can evolve to better meet your needs would be greatly appreciated and even for other parts of our site.

Thanks so much for any insights or suggestions you share!

I built an online database for the best "Buy It For Life" products

I hate how many options we have when making purchasing decisions. I'd rather buy a few things that last a lifetime instead of hundreds of garbage products that need to be replaced every 6 months.

Which is why I built:

https://bifl.xyz

A simple website where users can submit and vote on the best BIFL products in a range of categories.

Help me build out the site by either commenting a product I should add to the database or by submitting a product yourself here

Cute Cotton Basics?

So frustrated with how everything is made of plastic these days. I hate the feeling on my skin, and the environmental impact.

What are good brands with 100% (or near 100%) cotton, cute basics. I'm looking for cute but simple and flattering tops - scoop and square necklines, etc., long sleeve and short sleeve. Not looking for boxy tee shirts. I've actually been pretty happy with Everlane, but looking for more options.

Thanks in advance for any recs!

Buying vegan based fashion vs. natrual fibres

I'm all for natrual fibres in clothes including fabrics sourced from animals. But lately I've been thinking. There are so many vegan options but they are based off of plastic. And I feel bad because it's either the animal or the environment. What would be the solution? Thrifting animal based clothing, only buying at shops were animal welfare is put on a high standard? Do you consciously choose vegan options or options that are sourced from the animal? Why?

Adelante Shoe only sendt one sho and wont fix there mistake

Second pair I bought from Adelante. First pair was great. I received my second "pair" in a sealed box. There was ONLY ONE SHOE IN THE BOX. Company informed me because I didnt buy shipping insurance they would only refund me for one shoe. I told them the package was sealed so it wasn't a shipping issue. They have now gone silent on my customer service request. This was a total ripoff of almost $300. They could have had a life long customer but now I will never purchase from them again

Do you also cringe while walking past fast fashion store windows?

I'm shocked when I walk past those stores. The clothes are wrinkly, badly crafted and made out off the cheapest looking material and low quality garments. Although I know how the das fashion industry works it still makes me sad how many of these clothes will probably end up in landfills. And due to the high demand on cheap clothes nowadays it's so hard to find garments made out of natural fibres. But not only fast fashion brands are culprits of this also high- end brands. I few month ago I was looking for a decent sweater made from wool and even sweaters that cost 200$ had a very high amount of polyester. That's why it's so important to look at the labels and the stitching!

Experiences with Christy Dawn or Son de Flor?

Hi!

I am considering some higher quality brands to add to my closet in the future. I am trying to implement the idea of less items but higher quality into my wardrobe.

I love love love the cottage core style dresses both these lines offer, and am trying to research and weigh the pros and cons of both options.

Any positive or negative experiences with these? I adore some of the sweet floral prints available from Christy Dawn (not really an option on Son) but my concern is if it is deadstock fabrics, how do I know the fabric is of a high quality that will last? I have read that some of their dresses are Rayon and I am not sure about that fabric for their price point. Son de Flor uses linen which is a trustworthy material in my mind. If I am going to spend that kind of money on a dress I want it to last a lifetime!

Thx for any thoughts!

Which one’s more sustainable?

I have several pairs of old clothes that i would love to wear again but some of them look way to worn it needs a new dye, but it’s really hard for me to find a sustainable dye in my area where i live in. So the question is, is dying my old clothes (using non susstainble dye) a better option than not using my old clothes and potentially if i give them away to someone they will end up in a landfill? I have been debating about this for a long time.

What kind of problems do you face when shopping sustainably/responsibly?

Hi all,

I'm a student at The University of Melbourne and I'm currently working on ways to make responsible consumption easier for everyone to engage with as part of my Masters. From this, I've developed a platform which in its current form is a social marketplace for sustainable and ethical product reviews, shopping and information so that everything you need to fully inform your sustainable purchase decision is in one place (Here's my website with what it currently looks like: Grapevine).

However, market research is a continual process, so I'd love to hear what kind of problems you face when you're trying to shop more responsibly and what solutions you use at the moment to help you out, as this will help me determine what elements of the platform need to change to meet consumer needs.

Or, if you have any feedback, suggestions or improvements for Grapevine then I'd love to hear them too!

(Also feel free to sign up to the waitlist for early access to the app if you're interested. At the moment I have 10 brands and about 100 first users who will be using the app once development is finished around February next year.)

Sustainable fabrics for active wear

I love making clothing, and I prefer to use fabric from natural fibers, preferably sustainably sourced. However, I'd like to make active wear for myself but I'm struggling with which kind of biodegradable, ecofriendly fabric to get. Of course its needs to be stretchy and thick enough to squat in. But I also don't want it to show wet spots like you'd see in cotton. Does anyone have suggestions?

Feedback on Our Sustainable Brand Reviews

Hi everyone! I'm part of a startup focused on sustainability, and we've been working on something I think might interest you guys. We've developed a section on our website where we deeply research and review brands for their sustainability practices. It's a rigorous process, involving a lot of time and direct communication with each brand.

So far, we've reviewed 16 brands in categories like clothing and accessories, baby care, groceries among others.

Page link is here

We'll be happy to get some early feedback. What do you look for in sustainable brands? Are there specific aspects of sustainability that are most important to you? what do you think about our approach? Your insights would be incredibly valuable to us and could help shape our future reviews.

We want to contribute positively but if this post is inappropriate in any way, please let me know, and I'll adapt accordingly. Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts!

A quick guide to sustainable fashion... If you have any more..

I love fashion, and I just wanted to create a quick guide to help us all look our best sustainably. I'm sure this is review for many, and new for many.

  1. If you can avoid synthetic fabrics please do so. Look for natural fibers, cotton, linen, silk, hemp, and wool. Please look at the clothing tags. Synthetic clothing is contributing to our microplastic issue.Globally it is estimated that 16-35% of our microplastics are from synthetic fabric in our clothing. If you can get organic cotton, this is even better. Cotton is a pesticide heavy crop. Honestly, linen, organic cotton and hemp are the best environmentally. (I personally don't have an issue with silk, or wool, but many vegans do.) Tencel and bamboo fabric also does not create microplastics but take quite a bit of energy to turn into fabric. If you make your own clothes, make it from natural fibers. Please remember satin, denim flannel and jersey etc are types of knits or weaves, they are not what the fabric is made from. It is very possible to have a polyester satin, or jersey just as much as it's possible to have a silk satin, or cotton jersey. Synthetic fibers are usually, nylon, polyesther, spandex, rayon, acrylic, olefin, modal, microfiber, etc.
  2. If you can, please thrift your clothing. If you'd like to know why, please look up "Clothing pile, Chilean dessert." Even thrifted synthetic clothing is better than new synthetic ones.
  3. Repair your clothes. I find this fun... I have made some individual pieces. Add a new collar, change the buttons, add patches etc.
  4. Wash your clothes in cold water. 90% of the energy your washing machine uses, goes toward heaing the water. It honestly saves your clothes, and cleans them just as well.
  5. Hang dry your clothes if you can. This saves your clothes too.
  6. If you aren't going to wear it at least 30 times, do not buy it. I have started wearing my dresses that I only wear once or twice, just around. Honestly, I have received nothing but compliments. It also reduces my need for other clothing because I have less wear and tear on my other clothes.
  7. DO not use laundry pods, or sheets because they also contribute to micro-plastics. I have switched to a 5 galleon pail of powder detergent. (Nellie's) If you insist on using pods or sheets, the sheets are better, because at least the sheets don't have phosphates and they usually come in a easily recycleable cardboard package.
  8. Make sure your laundry detergent does not have phosphates. This helps algae bloom, and takes the oxygen out of the water, and chokes out the marinelife.
  9. Do not use fabric softener. It is not necessary, it wears out your clothes faster, and it can harm marine life. It takes energy to create, and comes in a plastic container. Why? I have never used fabric softener in my life, and my life is just fine.
  10. Tailor your clothes. If you lose or gain weight, you can easily tailor your clothes to fit. Letting them out is a bit trickier but still possible. It is better to use what you have. I lost 55 lbs, and I bought very few new clothes. I tailored my old ones to fit. I saved money, learned a new skill, and helped the environment. WIN all around.

Bought a second hand polo by Hugo Samuel that claims to be 100% cotton on the label but feels really smooth like polyester/polycotton. Is it a lie?

Are my fingers deceiving me or has the label lied? Anyone heard of companies faking the cotton content in their clothes? Or has the cotton been treated to feel different?

Anyone tried the clothing from For Days?

I fell down the rabbit hole of researching trying to get rid of some of my gently used clothes...

I found For Days and while I'm not sure about if they have legitimate sustainable recycling, I'm more interested in diverting my textiles from the landfill than earning cash. For Days, of course, also offers you credits to their store when you recycle with them. I thought I'd find a few items I like, read a review or two before I send in my clothes to them to see if I would actually use the credits.

No reviews, on any of the clothes I was interested in. I searched by "most popular"; their top selling item is a green sweater on sale for $196, without a single review. Kinda fishy to me...

Has anyone tried their clothes? Are they quality? Have you ever used your credits with them?

Silk dress?

Hi! Looking for high quality silk brands that are in the $150 for items. I recently purchased form Quince but then read their products are low quality… any suggestions?

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Recommendations for sustainable wedding dresses?

I just got engaged and have been debating about buying a dress, getting one second hand, or making my it myself and wanted to see if people have suggestions for sustainable brands to buy from. I don’t have a budget yet but I’m hoping to stay on the cheaper side. I’m not 100% sure what I want yet other than lace and not poofy.
