[Question for Brands Lurking] Sustainability Certifications and Third-Party Verifications: Worth the Effort or Room for Improvement?

Just throwing this out there for any brands in the crowd, big or small, that are navigating the sustainability journey. We see a lot of talk about third-party certifications and verifications like Fair Trade, Energy Star, and Rainforest Alliance. But what’s the real deal?

Is getting these badges of sustainability really making a difference for your brand? Does it help with visibility, trust, or even just making your operations more sustainable? Or are there parts of this process that feel like they could be better, more transparent, or more helpful?

Would love to hear your real, on-the-ground experiences and thoughts. And hey, if you're not a brand but have opinions on these certifications, feel free to jump in too!

Anyone has experience with vegan leather pleather synthetic leather pantented leather?

Imo they are pretty similar made using a manmade leather like material bonded o to a fabric backing, similar to the Genuine leather where real leather flakes mixed with synthetic onto a backing.

while we can avoid them they are like pest that usually exist in most products especially the small items. there are also things where you cant really avoid them if you really like the products.

while flaked leather can be fixed using angelus leather paint it wont be as good as original.

recently i heard people talk about applying angelus neutral finisher onto brand new pleathers as a seal, and imo if possible to get to the underside which is the fabric a layer too to seal off both sides. This might be better than whatever aerospace 303 or other plastic care products recommended sonce the angelus lays a layer of coat on and are flexible

anyone has experience in this?

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Humble Warrior - A Sustainable Work-From-Home Clothing Brand

We have recently launched Humble Warrior, our sustainable fashion brand.

Visit us here.

We have started this year with our line of high-quality, hand-printed hoodies.

We would really value feedback from you - please do not shy away from telling us truthfully what you are thinking!

We know we are not the cheapest hoodie on the market :) but our quality is outstanding. That is why we would need to know whether the message currently comes across to you, or whether we need to do anything completely different on our site.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you could give us!

Can anyone verify/give insight on a few statistics?

Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone here can help me verify a few stats:

  1. The value of the (entire) global apparel industry is estimated at 1.53 trillion USD

  2. The value of the global sustainable fashion/apparel market is about 7.69 billion USD

  3. The value of the global secondhand fashion/apparel market is estimated to be worth 177 billion USD

I realize these categories aren’t exactly comparable, but do these numbers look correct, (or usable)? If they’re right, the percentage of sustainable fashion being produced is TINY, and I can’t account for how the secondhand market seems so large when so many clothes are thrown away.

TIA!

Where to promote Brand New Sustainable Fashion Projects?

Hello everyone, my name is Julian and a few days ago I launched a family sustainable fashion project through Kickstater (Crowfuding). Our pillar is local and limited production, and we all know what this entails, which is why we decided that, given its costs, crowdfuding for our first collection could allow us to give visibility and make ourselves known. However, I do not find many platforms or media (blogs/podcast) that allow this type of project to be promoted without being paid. Do you have any sites to recommend where I can promote my brand?

For the curious, the brand name is Kami Apparel, and it is from Barcelona - Spain, the campaign page is: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kamiapparel/kami-traditional-japanese-hawaiian-shirts?ref=590srs, I hope that you like it, and if you have feedback please share it!
