Natural fiber activewear — are we ready to trade performance for sustainability?

Hi everyone,

I’m Ruth, building a small women’s activewear brand.

Recently, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about fabric choices, especially the role of natural fibers in activewear. There seems to be a growing interest in more natural materials — merino wool, Tencel, hemp and other plant-based fibers. I completely understand why: they often feel beautiful on the skin, and many people are looking for alternatives to traditional synthetic fabrics.

But I’m curious about the real experience from people who actually train in them.

During our development process, we explored several natural fiber options. Some of them felt amazing in everyday wear and lower-intensity activities. However, when we tested them for harder training sessions — sweating, stretching, compression, repeated washing and maintaining shape over time — we found there were still some challenges.

In the end, for our performance pieces, we chose a nylon/spandex blend because it gave us the best balance of comfort, durability, stretch recovery and functionality.

That decision wasn’t because we think synthetic fabrics are “better”. It was because we couldn’t ignore how important performance is when someone is actually moving.

I’d love to hear from people who have tried different activewear fabrics:

  • Have you tried natural fiber activewear? What was your experience?
  • What activities do you wear it for? (Yoga, Pilates, running, strength training, hybrid, etc.)
  • Do you notice a meaningful difference between natural and synthetic fabrics when training?
  • If you had to choose between a more natural material and better performance/function, which would you choose?
  • Would you accept shorter durability for a more natural fabric?

I’m genuinely interested in how people think about this trade-off. Would love to hear your experiences and opinions.

Thanks!
Ruth

im really torn

idk what to call this post but anyways…
So, i have sworn off of fast fashion but i have this bra that i’ve been wearing almost every single day since i was 14 when i got it. I only wear this one because i’m autistic and have quite bad sensory issues when it comes to bras and have regretted it every time i’ve worn a different one.

The issue is that this bra was originally from h&m and my bust has grown quite a bit, meaning it doesn’t really fit me anymore. I have tried scavenging all of vinted but haven’t really found this exact bra again, and even if i did, the tag is cut off, so i wouldn’t know my size.

I really don’t want to support fast fashion, but i also don’t know where to get it, any advice?

Help finding durable hard labor work pants that are as sustainably and ethically made as possible

I've been slowly eating through my dad's horded old pants that fit but I'm starting to run out I probably have a while but considering prices I might need to save up. I need durable pants ment for trades men for my own safety that will pass my companies policies(need to be solid black, or blue no fading no visible holes) this has made thrifting for durable pants quite the unicorn hunt. considering im not small I've been repairing the crotches as need be from chub rub but considering my chud still rubs the repairs only last so long I'm running out of margin to keep the repairs invisible for my bosses. I personally prefer heavier materials like duck canvus or duck cloth for many reasons but the sustainable clothing brands I do fallow don't make clothing for heavy labor jobs and wouldnt last with how hard I am on pants at work. Recommendations for brands or new repair methods I'll take eather, im just trying to figure out the best way to reduce my footprint. Keep in mind that for repair methods, I'm working with just hand sewing since my sewing machine won't work with these heavy fabrics.

I have nothing to wear. Building a fix for closet paralysis and I'd love a founder's and Users perspectives

Hi everyone, I really love this community, it’s so inspiring to see the behind-the-scenes of other startups. Especially female startups. Building is hard, but this community makes it easier.

I’m currently in the pre-seed phase of Rewear, a fashion-tech project. I realized that most "sustainable fashion" just tries to sell us more stuff. I want to build a system (starting with smart interfaces/mirrors) that actually helps us shop our own closets first.

I'm currently mind-mapping the "Why," and I’m stuck on a core assumption: Do people actually want data on their clothes (like cost-per-wear), or does that feel too clinical/boring? I’m trying to bridge the gap between human behavior and technology without making it feel like a math homework assignment.

I’ve put together a 2-minute behavioral survey to see if I’m solving a real problem or just a "me" problem. If any fellow founders have a spare moment to give some feedback on the logic, I’d be so grateful!

You can find the survey here: and here is the link to our website

Thanks for being part of the "why",I truly appreciate it .It is always hard for me as a founder to get my brand out there so this is my first time

The fastest-growing corner of fashion isn't luxury, it's second-hand. And it's quietly eating the whole industry.

Here's a stat that should worry every luxury CEO: secondhand clothing is now growing 2 to 3 times faster than the brand-new stuff they're selling. While Gucci and Louis Vuitton fight over shoppers who've gone quiet, a booming resale market is quietly eating the whole industry's lunch, and most investors aren't watching the right names.

Because here's the thing everyone gets wrong: "fashion" isn't one trade. In 2026 it's split into at least five separate universes behaving nothing alike. Here's a map of the whole board, with the numbers that matter.

The scale first: global apparel is roughly a $1.8 trillion market, but growing at only low single digits (~3-4% a year). So this isn't a rising-tide story, it's a fight over who takes share. And that's exactly what's happening.

1. Luxury (mostly European, diverging hard)

  • LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Dior; Paris, US OTC LVMUY), soft first half, fashion division only just crept back to +1% in Q2 after seven flat/declining quarters.
  • Hermès (Paris), the consistent outperformer.
  • Kering (Gucci; Paris), the big laggard; ~50% of group profit rides on Gucci alone.
  • Also: Prada (Milan/Hong Kong-listed), Burberry (London), and US-listed Tapestry (TPR) (Coach) and Capri (CPRI) (Michael Kors, Versace). BCG reckons luxury only grows ~2-5% a year near-term, the "rebound and reset" era is over.

2. Fast fashion / value (taking share)

  • Inditex (Zara; Madrid), ~8-9% growth, huge net cash.
  • H&M (Stockholm).
  • Off-price winners TJX (TJX) (TK Maxx) and Ross (ROST), which do well when shoppers trade down.

3. Sportswear / footwear (resets + a tariff story)

  • Nike (NKE), net income down ~35% (tariffs + tax); mid-reset.
  • Adidas (Frankfurt, US OTC ADDYY), bounce-back, ~14% currency-neutral growth.
  • Lululemon (LULU), flagged a ~$380m gross tariff hit for 2026.
  • Birkenstock (BIRK), ~14% constant-currency growth.

4. US mall & denim (the 2026 surprise)

  • Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), a genuine retail comeback.
  • American Eagle (AEO), Urban Outfitters (URBN) (Anthropologie/Free People are the real engine).
  • Levi's (LEVI), denim revival; Ralph Lauren (RL), quietly strong.

5. Resale / recommerce (the fastest-growing corner)
The trend most people underrate, and the one from the top of this post. Secondhand fashion is a ~$200bn+ global market growing 2-3x faster than new apparel (BCG/ThredUp), with US resale alone tracking toward ~$24bn in 2026. Roughly two-thirds of Gen Z and millennials have bought secondhand, and ~60% of shoppers now say resale value affects what they buy new. It cuts two ways for investors: a headwind for full-price sellers, a tailwind for the platforms, The RealReal (REAL), ThredUp (TDUP), plus eBay (EBAY) and Etsy (ETSY).

(Notable: some luxury handbags, Hermès especially, can hold or gain value resold, part of why the brand's so resilient.)

The controversy worth knowing: Prada and the Kolhapuri chappal
Good example of how brand reputation is a real business factor, not just noise. In June 2025 Prada showed leather sandals at Milan that closely resembled India's traditional Kolhapuri chappals (a 12th-century handcrafted design, GI-protected since 2019), without initially crediting their origin, and reportedly priced them around ₹1.2 lakh (~$1,400+) vs a few hundred rupees for the originals. Cue a big cultural-appropriation backlash and a PIL in the Bombay High Court. Prada then acknowledged the Indian roots, visited Kolhapur, and signed a deal with state-backed artisan bodies to co-produce a limited "Kolhapuri-inspired" line (~2,000 pairs, launching early 2026). Adidas had a near-identical episode over an Indigenous Mexican design, so it's an industry-wide theme. For luxury, brand desirability is the asset, so reputational/IP missteps carry genuine commercial risk (and, handled well, can become an opportunity).

Other trends worth knowing: tariffs are the dominant 2026 margin story for US brands; "dupes"/value positioning keeps winning (same behaviour as the e.l.f. effect in beauty); ~70% of retail sales are now digitally influenced; and the UAE/Gulf is flagged as a leading luxury-resale demand region.

The honest reality check: "fashion" is at least five different bets with different economics. A tariff line, a single-brand dependence, or a trade-down tailwind matters far more than how cool the label is. A famous brand isn't a strong stock, Gucci is iconic and its parent's been the worst performer, while an unglamorous off-price chain quietly compounds. And that headline stat cuts both ways: resale growing fast doesn't automatically make the resale platforms good investments (several are small and unprofitable). A hot trend isn't a signal.

One Gulf note: several luxury houses reported Middle East store sales dropping sharply during the recent regional disruption, a reminder that even the strongest brands face macro and geopolitical shocks they don't control.

Which fashion brands do you buy from and would you invest in them?

One more plastic thing I replaced

I recently switched from a polyester sleep mask to a silk one and honestly, I wish I'd done it sooner.

The polyester one would get warm and slightly sweaty after a few hours. Silk feels much nicer against the skin, and there's also something nice about using a natural material for something you wear all night.

I specifically looked for OEKO-TEX certified silk, since the Standard 100 certification tests textiles for harmful substances.

It's such a small change, but if you're trying to reduce synthetic materials in your everyday life, a silk sleep mask is actually a pretty easy swap.

I need advice for diy-ing my old fast fashion hoodies , jeans and skirts as a plus size alt girl

I usually consider myself eco conscious but I never realized that a lot of my clothes might actually be fast fashion especially “No boundaries “ which is a Walmart brand I believe and as a plus size college student obviously my budget is pretty low. I’m trying to have a more alternate clothing style and i would feel very guilty to just throw this stuff or just reset my closet entirely…is there any way I can manage and fix these? I’m trying to also make them more durable.

Both Adjustable and Modest clothing

Hiii

I have been searching for other brands to buy dresses, skirts or pants but my requirements are making it a bit difficult :

- I only buy adjustable clothing (not one size fits all, those just look like big sacks on me since i'm pretty slim)

- I wear very covering sports bras on a daily basis because I like to be able to do anything anytime without feeling restrained (if you can also recommend brands that make cotton bras that would be great) => this only allows me to wear "modest" cloths to hide the bra

the brands that i've ordered from or been eyeing so far :

cottagecorewear.no

dreamingofivy.com

houseofolives.co

just-margo.com

sondeflor.com

poetdresses.com

hannahlavery.co.za

themysticalattic.com

materfiam.fr

I like the cottagecore/whimsical style and cloths with full skirts, do you have other recommendations ??

Thank you !

Fashion founders/designers in Europe: what are you actually doing to make your brand circular? Looking for practical ideas

I'm building an independent clothing brand and we're trying to move beyond the usual definition of "sustainable fashion", organic fabrics, natural materials, etc. and actually think about circularity across the life of a garment.

I'm particularly interested in what young and independent fashion brands in the EU/UK are actually implementing today.

For example:

  • Repair / lifetime repair programmes
  • Take-back schemes
  • Resale of pre-owned pieces
  • Upcycling returned or damaged garments
  • Designing garments so components can be replaced
  • Using production remnants/deadstock back into new collections
  • Turning unsold inventory into something new rather than discounting/destroying it
  • Rental or wardrobe-sharing models
  • Digital product passports / garment traceability
  • Designing for eventual recycling/disassembly
  • Incentives for customers to return old garments

But I'm especially curious about creative ideas that aren't yet mainstream.

If you're a designer, founder, sustainability lead, manufacturer, or work somewhere in the European fashion ecosystem:

What circular model are you experimenting with? What has actually worked, and what sounded good on paper but didn't work commercially?

I'd also love to understand the European perspective, are EU regulations and upcoming requirements influencing how you're designing your products or business model?

I'm looking for practical examples rather than theoretical sustainability advice. Even small experiments or things you've tried with 20–50 customers would be really useful.

Would love to hear what you're seeing/doing.

I’ve started checking labels properly and now I notice polyester everywhere and even in clothes that are priced as premium. Im mainly trying to find breathable tops, trousers, dresses and knitwear for work and everyday life. Which brands are still reliable for like cotton linen or cashmere without costing like full designer prices any recommendations?

Studying how people from mixed or multiple cultures feel about wedding attire & would love your input

Hi! I’m a fashion undergraduate doing research on how people who don’t belong to just one culture or country think about wedding attire maybe you grew up somewhere different from where your family’s from, or you’re marrying someone from a different background than yours. I’m exploring the idea of a dress that blends both parts of who you are into one piece, instead of picking just one, and I’d love to understand if this resonates with people or not. Would something like this feel meaningful to you for your own wedding? Do you think it’s a good idea in practice, or does it sound complicated? Genuinely open to any thoughts, including critical ones this is purely for my research.

If you have a couple of minutes, I’d also really appreciate it if you could fill out this short survey: Google Form.

When you buy natural fibers do you size up to account for shrinkage?

I am building a closet that I can wear for the next 10 years (I'm still wearing clothes from 10 years ago). I'm very interested in different organic fibers but I am afraid to spend a lot of money just for them to shrink and become unwearable... I wash in cold and hang dry as a rule of thumb, but I've been disappointed in the past by natural fibers shrinking on me.

TLDR: When you buy natural fibers (or shrinkable non-polyester fibers) like tencel, ramie, rayon, modal, linen, viscose etc, do you buy your size, or do you size up? Do you consider the shrink factor when you buy your natural fiber clothes?

The Hidden Cost of Fast Fashion 👕

Most of us know fast fashion is cheap, but the environmental cost is staggering.

A few facts that really stood out to me:

\* The fashion industry is responsible for an estimated \*\*10% of global carbon emissions\*\*.

\* It uses enormous amounts of water—producing a single cotton shirt can require thousands of litres.

\* Textile dyeing is one of the world's biggest sources of industrial water pollution.

\* Millions of tonnes of clothing end up in landfills or are burned every year, even though much of it is still wearable.

Fast fashion thrives on a cycle of buying more, wearing less, and throwing clothes away sooner. The lower prices often hide the real environmental costs of production, transportation, and waste.

I'm not saying everyone needs to stop buying affordable clothing overnight—it's not always that simple. But buying fewer, longer-lasting items, repairing clothes, swapping with friends, or shopping second-hand can all help reduce demand.

What do you think? Is the responsibility mainly on consumers, or should brands and governments be doing much more to tackle the problem?

Creating an ethically sourced sustainable luxury clothing brand

Hi all,

I am in the process of creating a Womens' D2C sustainable clothing brand. The idea is to have a clean supply chain as much as possible and create clothes that actually reduce the carbon footprint of the customer and the business stay net neutral.

We aim to be a brand that does not compromise on the quality of fabric or the design. Currently, a lot of sustainable brands compromise on one or other and many that don't. Aesthetics and style would still remain a core concept but educating customers about the fabric and its sourcing is how we plan to bring about more awareness around true sustainability. We don't just want to add CSR button on our website but actually be one of those brands that cares about the environment and our future customer's skin.

Eventually the goal is that we also increase the lifecycle of the product by engaging in circular systems around the clothes that we create, so nothing ends up in landfills. I am still planning the pricing model for this and coming up with operational processes.

I would love to hear from everyone who cares about the impact of their choices on the environment and sustainable fashion. As a customer what do you care about most? What would you appreciate in the story of a new emerging brand? And what would be the decision making factor when it comes to purchasing.

We are starting very lean and small, so of course, we don't have the big bucks to spend on marketing and creating that hype around it. But the story is being built on integrity and what we care about. The big vision is to revolutionize how people think about clothing and do our bit in saving the planet at the same time. Any comments, inputs, feedback, or hope and thoughts are welcome. Thank you in advance.

👕 SUSTAINABLE CLOTHING
♂️=Men's♀️=Women's 🤱🏽=Children's

The following six small businesses had to completely reinvent how apparel is constructed just to exist. They use proprietary, custom-knit fabric tension or special plant-based tree rubbers wrapped in organic materials to circumvent the plastic problem entirely: (💛🍉)

•KENT 💓♂️♀️ 🇺🇸
•The Very Good Bra 💓✨♀️ 🇦🇺
•Cottonique 💓♂️♀️🇺🇸
•Rawganique ♂️♀️🤱🏽 🇨🇦

Standard Eco Apparel ♀️(Contains hidden synthetic threads or blends)

•Harvest & Mill 🍉♂️🇺🇸(The Hidden Plastic: They use 100% USA organic cotton fabric, but must finish hems with durable polyester-core sewing threads.Total Plastic Percentage: Less than 1% of the total item weight.)
•Industry of All Nations 🍉♂️🇺🇸 (PLASTIC CHECK: While their shirts, pants, and sweaters are beautifully plastic-free using organic cotton and alpaca wool, they do NOT pass a 100% site-wide plastic-free rule. Specific items like their Wild Boxers utilize waistbands made from recycled synthetic elastic).
•MATE the Label 🍉♂️🇺🇸(1-6% plastic)
•Happy Earth 💓 💜 🍉♂️🇺🇸(1-10% plastic. Clean organic lounge options sit at 1%, but their durable outdoor stretch gear relies on standard synthetic blends)
•Reprise Activewear 💓🍉🇺🇸(6-8% plastic)
•Reformation ✨🇺🇸(2-40% plastic. Linen dresses stay relatively low in synthetics, but wide ranges of their denim and knits blend elastane, nylon, and polyester.)(Owned by a neutral private equity firm, Permira, meaning it stays highly eco-conscious and cruelty-free, but has no independent tag)
•Sézane 💜✨♂️🇫🇷(2-46% Plastic. Premium leather and silk items are structured using synthetic linings, polyamide (nylon) blends, or acrylic stitchings) (Backed by minor neutral investment, but founders retain independent control)
•Dôen | Cleobella | Christy Dawn 🍉🇺🇸 (Do not assume these are always pure. While their base cotton lines are clean, all three brands regularly release high-end statement dresses made with 90-100% recycled plastic lace, nylon overlays, or synthetic deadstock polyester fabric. You must check the digital fabric breakdown before buying, or you risk wearing pure plastic.)

Creating and ethically sourced sustainable luxury clothing brand

Master’s research on climate strategy in luxury fashion - looking to speak with 2 people working in the field

I’m writing my master’s thesis comparing how four luxury houses (Gucci, Dior, Stella McCartney, Chloé) design and communicate their climate strategies from 2020–2025. Most of the work is content analysis of their sustainability reports and public communications, but I’d like to test what I’m finding against people who actually work on this.

Looking for 2 people for a 30-minute call in the next two weeks.

Relevant backgrounds:
- sustainability or CSR roles at a fashion brand
- consultants working with fashion
- clients, certification or standards bodies, or academics researching this area.

Anonymised in the write-up (optional), and I’m happy to share the finished thesis. If you’re open to it, comment or DM and I’ll send over the details and my university email.

the "rich people" clothing rule i learned that changed how i shop now 👔💸

heard somewhere that people who actually got money dont buy 10 cheap versions of somethin, they just buy ONE good piece n wear it for years instead. sounded obvious when i first heard it but it genuinely changed how i shop now ngl

started applyin it n honestly kinda annoyed at myself lookin back, i've bought the same cheap jacket like 4 times over the years bc it kept fallin apart, wouldve been cheaper n smarter to just buy one solid one from the start 💀 lesson learned a lil late but here we are

anyone else pick up a "buy better not more" moment with clothes that actually stuck? drop yours below

Has anyone else started appreciating the clothes they already own more?

i've been trying to wear whats already in my closet more often instead of always looking for something new. Its been a nice reminder that i already have a lot of pieces i enjoy wearing. Has anyone else made a small change thats helped them get more use out of their clothes?

Secondhand fashion isn't always THE solution

Don’t get me wrong, secondhand shopping is great. But it is often portrayed as THE solution to fast fashion’s problems, and it can get out of hand quite fast.

It’s not only about the fact that secondhand fashion can only circulate what has already been made (nowadays, a lot of fast fashion too), does not stop brands from producing more or create an incentive for brands to produce more ethically either.

But there is also a mindset problem. Growing resale platforms can fuel a ‘guilt-free shopping’ mentality, encouraging us to buy more because it feels more sustainable, even when we don’t actually need it. Or some people even buy fast fashion more recklessly, knowing they can easily resell it later.

Curious what your take on this is. Do you try to balance secondhand shopping with supporting ethical and more sustainable brands that are producing new clothes?

Second hand onesies

Hello everyone! Would love a second opinion.

I am a doula, former career nanny, and current house manager. The family I am working for is giving away onesies since they are done having children, and a large amount of them are magnetic me brand.

As a doula, magnetic onesies are on my social media/website as a “parent must have”. My mom boss recommended I take the magnetic onesies (worn not a lot, they had MANY onesies) to put in postpartum baskets for my clients.

I would take them home, wash them with non toxic scent free laundry mix (I usually use non toxic no scent) before adding them to the baskets.

My question: is that weird? I wouldn’t include the price or tag if I bought new onesies anyways , and thought it would be a good way to recycle baby clothes and a way for new parents to try.

Semi natural fiber leggings that wont bag/stretch if worn multiple times?

Hi all! I'm looking for what feels like the holy grail of leggings, at least somewhat sustainable, breathable, and can be worn 2-3x without bagging/losing shape. I'm going on a trip with limited access to laundry, so keeping shape for multiple wears really is the main concern (along with not being transparent, I had this issue with the pact leggings I tried).

Como vocês decidem o que vale a pena comprar no guarda-roupa

Comprar roupa hoje em dia é quase um campo minado: fast fashion, preço baixo, qualidade duvidosa...Como vcs decidem se uma peça realmente vale o investimento? Olham pra qualidade do tecido? Pra durabilidade? Pra versatilidade?

Want to get a natural fibre turtleneck for my vegan partner

As the title says, partner is vegan and basically lives in graphic tees and selvedge jeans.

I want to get him a nice charcoal turtleneck for work but they’re all cashmere and he doesn’t agree with cashmere or wool ethically.

Could anyone recommend natural fibres so he doesn’t end up wearing 100% viscose? TIA
