Sustainable fashion industry trends for 2020
Compare Ethics have deduced the top five industry trends for sustainable fashion in 2020 as:
- an end to greenwashing
- recycling + plant based innovations in textiles
- recognition of garment worker rights
- the rise of resale and upcycling
- the reinvention of the rental market.
Do you agree, or are there other key industry trends to look out for this year? https://compareethics.com/sustainable-fashion-trends-2020/

Where to find somewhere that actually recycles old textiles?
I have a large garbage bag of old fabric scraps, tshirts, worn out socks and underwear, etc. that I want to recycle. However, a lot of the textile recycling places in my city (Houston) seem to just ship anything remotely wearable to Africa. I’d rather donate my old textiles to somewhere that will actually recycle them into new garments or reuse them as insulation or something similar. Any ideas on where I can take my stuff or how to better weed out the fake woke “recycling” companies?

Blockchain Technology in Sustainable Fashion Acquisition - Thesis
For my bachelor's thesis I want to evaluate a tool that retrieves information about a piece of clothing from a blockchain by scanning a QR-Code and then provides this information to the customer. In the face of global ecological disasters and climate change, this research addresses issues of making supply chains in the fashion industry more sustainable and more transparent, connected to the consumer sided adoption of blockchain technology. For your information, you will find a short and easily accessible introduction to this topic inside the survey.
The survey will take you less than 10 minutes to complete (including reading the intro) and is anonymously. You can leave your mail address and have the opportunity to participate in a $50 raffle by taking the survey, but only if you like.

Sustainable Fashion: The Environmental Impacts of Clothing's Lifecycle
See the next article in my series on sustainable clothing:
https://esclothes.com/blogs/news/environmental-impacts-of-each-lifecycle-stage
The article explores all lifecycle stages of a garment -- product design, fiber production, garment production, shipping, use/cleaning, reuse/disposal -- and is backed by research and data, and my own experience working in the industry.
There's also a place at the bottom to vote on a clothing brand for me to help make more sustainable.
Hope these are useful. I'll be continuing the series with more specific actions you can take to shop sustainably, again backed by research and data.

Technology + Sustainability in Fashion
Hey Reddit ππ½
We are getting ready to launch our podcast on technology and sustainability in fashion (IG: thealoinitiative) and we’d like to hear from you on questions you may have regarding these topics?
Are there any specific companies/brands that you may like us to host on our podcast, and what types of questions would you ask them?
What comes to your mind when you hear “fashion-tech” or “sustainable fashion”?
Would love to hear thoughts! Thanks π€

Free Guides for Sustainable Fashion Start-Ups
Recently I have been seeing a lot of online courses being sold that are specifically targeted towards people who want to start their own sustainable and ethical business. Downloadable "courses" cost anywhere from $50-$500. For some reason, these courses have never sat right with me. When I started virtue + vice my goal was to help educate people about the fashion industry, and I think hiding information behind a paywall is the opposite of what we should be doing. That is why I am trying to democratize the start-up industry with my free courses. I am starting at the very beginning, how to name your brand, and taking companies all the way through the process - designing a product, product development, sourcing, production, how to sell, and even how to do your own PR. All the guides are being co-written with other industry experts. I think that every small business that wants to create product sustainably and ethically is a win for the world, and I want to offer my 10+ years of fashion industry experience to them for free, in hopes it makes their journey a little bit easier. Are there guides you have been thinking about buying and wish you could get for free?

Everlasting Wardrobe: Sustainable Children's Apparel Rental Membership
Hey everyone! We just launched our children's clothing rental membership on Product Hunt. It's the most sustainable way for parents to discover and buy apparel for girls and boys, 6mo-12Y. Families get 8 pieces of everyday clothing per child/month. Each Wardrobe holds ~$400 MSRP worth of clothing. Parents can choose a plan with all brand new apparel, or items that have been previously rented, but professionally cleaned and inspected. There's no pressure to purchase anything, it can be worn as often as you'd like over the month, and then sent back in the prepaid mailer located in your box
We don't carry any fast fashion brands. We have hundreds of organic, sustainable, and ethically made brands from around the world participating, and our Members get access to exclusive discounts, once they know their family already loves something. All items are donated to charity or recycling partners once they're taken out of service.
We thank you for any comments or feedback! Our biggest questions is, What would stop you from signing up? What isn't clear enough? What value if any would this service add to your family? What more can we do to bring sustainability to this industry!?

Finding sustainable fabric suppliers
Hi I’m currently a fashion design student and we don’t cover sustainability in fashion until the Third year of the course and I’m finding it hard to find sustainable fabrics for making clothes. Charity shops are only getting me so far and I plan on expanding and I’ll need rolls of fabric. If anyone has any idea where I could source such materials I’d greatly appreciate it, preferably within the EU but if you have any suggestions outside the EU I’ll happily take them.
Thanks so much in advance!

let's share our resources in the new year and help artisans flourish
When I am in India one thing small artisans always ask of me is to please tell other people about them, and bring them more business. I would love if we could all start doing this in the new year. In fashion, we so often keep our resources secret, but I think the way to make a real impact is to share who is really making our clothes and help those small artisan businesses grow.
If anyone in this group is looking to dip their toe into the world of Indian artisan fabrics, I think one of the best places to start is in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. India is interesting because each region is specialized in different types of handicrafts. For example, Jaipur is famous for block printing. Ahmedabad, IMO, has some of the best khadi fabrics in all of India.
If you are already using khadi, where are some of your favorite suppliers?
