Uni-Colour T-Shirts for Men.

Hey everyone,

I am currently looking for jersey fabric / thick fabric uni-colour T-Shirts. Currently the only part of my wardrobe that remains "unfair" "unconsciously" bought are my Uniqlo T-Shirt as their cut and fabric is one of the best even when compared with much more expensive alternatives. For obvious reasons I would love to replace these Shirt (going forward) with fair alternatives. However, so far in my research I have only found oddly cut or thin fabric fair shirts. Does anyone of you know a good fair company that sells these kind of shirts?

Cheers, M.

SwagSwap- An online point-based fashion trading platform!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXUKc4QxD3Y&feature=youtu.be

Hey there! My name is Bhargavi. I am a freshman in high-school. My team and I are working on developing an online point-based fashion trading platform, SwagSwap. We’ve always thought of clothes and accessories as a way people can express themselves. It’s away for people to let their unique personality shine through. However, this doesn’t deter from the fact that fast fashion is a huge problem in today’s world. Since you guys support sustainability, we thought we could ask for your support. In our world today, the average person throws around 70 pounds of clothing per year- this leads to more than 13,000,000 tons of textile waste globally, 95% of which can be reused. That's where SwagSwap comes in. By establishing a sustainable, interdependent cycle, we ensure that your gently used clothes get a chance at another life. And here's the best part- it's all point based! Upload your item to the site with a selling price (in points), and when it is bought, use the points to shop for new items! Don't worry- if your clothes don't sell, you have the option of sending it to a sustainable artist (so they can turn your clothes into cool merchandise, or as we like to call it, swag ;), and get reimbursed with 75% of the original point price! This all sounds cool, right? But here's the thing. We need your help- we have entered the Blue Ocean Entrepreneurship Competition, and we would love to win! The prize money would go towards funding for our site. We have already entered two other competitions and are currently competing as finalists. In order to support us and help us win the People's Choice Award, please click the Youtube link below and like our video. Thank you for your time, and we hope to see you on our site very, very soon!

Sustainable App (Looking for people to interview)

Hi everyone,

I posted previously about the sustainable fashion app - and we're currently still looking for people to interview to get an idea of our users for app prototype development (this is for a college project):

  • 4 x 40-60 year olds for a fashion sustainability app of ours.
  • 3 x Young Working Professionals.

The reason why we're asking for the following is because the people who have responded to my survey thus far are milennilals/Generation Z- and we're looking for more input from a variety of age ranges.

We will be interviewing you about your sustainable living habits, what you would constitute as "sustainable", as well as what features you would be interested in having in a sustainable fashion app.

If you're interested in being interviewed, please DM me, and I'll be happy to schedule a time to interview you.

Good news or just greenwashing? What do you think?

Similar to other online retailers in the fashion industry like 'About You', 'Zalando' launches a new second-hand branch to develop towards a circular economy business model.

https://preview.redd.it/a4heezgfbgj61.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=034b003d7f3075c6150e24eb38e46250405a3dfb

Customers can now send their worn but well-preserved clothes to the retailer. The clothes will be checked, photographed and published by the retailer and can be sold in the same online store as conventional products. For the customer it should be as convenient as possible.

But what happens to products that are rated as not good enough for a resell? They will automatically be sent back by Zalando. For the sold products customers do not receive any money. Instead, they can decide whether they want to receive a voucher for the store or donate the money. Why? They say, because it’s easier for the customer. Zalando also claims that they do not earn any money with this pre-owned category.

Do you believe Zalando’s interest is authentic or do they seek to improve their image? Should similar companies follow the same approach?

I started digging into the Fairtrade & living wage labels & found that they’re pretty deceptive. Overseas women of color working overtime to create expensive goods for ‘ethical’ brands doesn’t seem like feminism, or progress. It’s just....exploitation. I’d like to hear any opinions on the subject.

Urge your governor to take action on the growing problem of fashion waste

We are making more clothes than we can wear. Millions of garments produced each year are NEVER even worn before heading to a landfill or incinerator! Every second, the equivalent of one dump truck filled with clothing and other textiles from around the world is sent to a landfill or incinerator

Throwing away unwanted clothing isn’t a valid solution to the fashion industry's overproduction. It compounds the problem by reinforcing the belief that everything is disposable.

Clothes are meant to be worn, not sent to landfills and incinerators where they can pollute our planet for generations.

TAKE ACTION: Urge your state governments to ban the practice of sending unsold overstock clothing to landfills and incinerators

Ink made from Delhi air pollution and other ideas for sustainable hangtags and packaging

One of the things brands often forget to design and have made are all of their labels and tags. They become so wrapped up in making their products perfect they forget about the little details. Then, at the final hour, they quickly rush something to the printers to be hastily made and applied to their first production order. Don't make this mistake. The same care you take into designing a conscious product should also be taken for your labels and packaging. Plan all your paper products from the start of your design process. And, even better, focus on creating eco friendly tags for a more holistic and sustainable end product.

When we talk about sustainable tags we need to focus on three things. These three things are the materials used to make them, the way they are printed, and how they are being attached to the garment.

Sustainable Fashion and why we should care?

Sustainable Fashion is not a new concept, however sustainable clothing being fashionable is. Sustainable fashion can be defined as timeless fashionable clothing and accessories, designed to be stylish with a tailored fit and manufactured using sustainable processes. In order to be classed as true sustainable fashion the raw materials must be farmed or produced via sustainable means.

Sustainable athletic wear?

I'm looking for a brand that's UK based or ships to the UK and does sustainable athletic wear clothes. Charity shops are closed (because of lockdown) and I'm exercising more now that it's warmer. Thanks!

Are there any petite-friendly sustainable brands out there?

I’m someone who mostly thrifts my clothes, but my biggest reason for not buying as much new clothing that is sustainable vs not sustainable is that I’m only 5’2. Most brands (aside from some activewear brands) don’t make clothing for short people and having to get clothes tailored or trying to tailoring them myself isn’t easy. Can anyone recommend sustainable brands that make petite/shorter-length jeans and other items?

Also, on the other end of the spectrum, so many sustainable brands just aren’t size inclusive for those who are tall and/or plus sized. I wish brands would take into account that inclusivity is an ethical standard and great for business.

Sustainable fashion.

Hello Reddit,

I have been looking for affordable sustainable clothing. However, affordable seems to be no less than 70- 60 pounds for short sleeve t-shirts which does not sound very affordable to me. My question is, are there truly affordable and sustainable brands are there?

and if not how bad are brands like Zara and H&M for the environment?

What is the Business Case for Sustainability?

Sustainably oriented businesses do better than their less sustainably minded competitors. To generate this transformation, collaborate on sustainability issues with your major stakeholders, as well as your employees, investors and customers. The primary stakeholders you want to engage fit into nine groups in three categories: “Direct Impact” stakeholders include “consumers, customers and employees.” The “Enabler Impact” group has “suppliers, investors and communities,” and the “Indirect Impact” category includes “NGOs, governments and media.”

Do big brands have a future? (Discussion)

Hi guys, I’ve been working for a big sportswear brand for a couple of years now and only recently had my sustainability “awakening”. Ever since then, I started feeling guilty about what I do for a living and started wondering if there is even a way for the big players (Nike, Adidas, etc.) to readjust their business models radically enough to make it morally okay to support them. IMO less overstock and better merchandising don’t go far enough... I feel like every aspect has to be reevaluated yet I haven’t seen/read about a lot of realistic solutions. Feel free to weigh in or reach out!

The Ultimate Sustainable Fabric Supplier List

I have been seeing a lot of debate online about what is the "most sustainable fabric". The truth is, there isn't one.

When we talk about sustainable fabrics we need to think about the garment's intended use. One of my favorite examples is the hemp bikini. People these days are so pro-hemp, but the reality is that a bikini made out of hemp would be so uncomfortable, weigh about 30 lbs when you got out of the water, and also would break down quicker in sun, sand, and chlorine than nylon or poly.

There is no quick and easy answer to what is the most sustainable fabric. So, I used my textile engineering degree, and 13 years of industry experience to create this article to help everyone learn how to think about sustainable product development holistically.

Plus I have included a list of high-tech new sustainable fibers that I think are pretty cool. What are your favorite sustainable fabrics?

Do we need more sustainable clothing brands? (a little discussion)

Not sure if someone else has already posted a discussion thread about this, but I'm wondering how everyone feels--do we need more sustainable clothing brands or no?

my quick take: I have struggled to find more affordable, trendy, non-neutral sustainable brands (obviously this is my opinion and my opinion only), so I feel like I want to see more sustainable brands popping up that offer different, refreshing styles. However, I also recognize that producing MORE is not always the answer. On one hand, I think we need more brands that are genuinely making an effort to be sustainable so that the consumer has better options, but there are lots of counterpoints to this...

Curious to hear your thoughts. What do you all think?? :)

De-stigmatizing thrift shopping?

I've had conversations with friends about my thrifting and whenever I bring it up they're usually dismissive. They say somewhat classist, insensitive things like "That's for poor people" "Aren't the clothes dirty? Don't they smell?". I come from a lower socioeconomic class than my friends so I grew up thrifting and have no personal experience with these gut reactions. They are not rude about it but they have no interest in second hand shopping and think I'm a bit strange for doing it. Have you had similar experiences? Have you ever convinced people to start thrifting?

Cotton Bra brands?

Hello there, For a while now I've been looking for cotton Bra brands that have preformed cups. Cotton bras are usually just braletts with no cups and don't give hold to larger breasts. I loved the memory foam like bras, since they have no wires (and wired bras are uncomfortable) but they only ever are made of polyester or something and sadly my skin has gotten more and more allergic reactions to polyester-like clothing.

Do you have any recommendations? I've actually tired sewing them myself before but I'm completely left-handed when it comes to DIY

Sustainable/Ethical Fashion Project

Hello everyone!

For a school project I was thinking of designing an app that would let you take or upload pictures from any piece of clothing, but the app only returns search results of similar pieces of clothing from sustainable/ethical fashion brands or second-hands. This way if you see an item that you like, you could search if you could buy a similar item from environment-friendly sources.

I was wondering if any of you would be interested in something like that? I would like to get a feel if an app like that would be useful at all. Your feedback is certainly appreciated!

Cheers

Let's talk about Circular Fashion, the great pledge that hasn't delivered.

They Talk the Talk, But Are Big Brands Doing Enough To Make Fashion Circular?

Read full article here - A snapshot of the reality behind the circular fashion movement - Let us know how you see it?

The mainstream fashion industry has clamoured to associate with the ideals of Circular Fashion, but has totally failed to enact real systematic change. The change urgently needed to reduce the impact of this wasteful industry.

Instead, for the most part, the 'Circular Fashion' image has been exploited as a marketing tool to make brands appear sustainable, when 95% of their range is not designed for remanufacture, recycling, or longevity.

Read on here - We compare the flirtation of mainstream fashion with circular economies, and smaller brands who just do what they say - putting the environment ahead of their profit margins.

We would love to know your thoughts on these ideas? Do you agree? Do you know other examples of brands that really commit to a circular economic system?

Thanks!

“You can’t take the egg out of an omelette, like you can’t take plastic out of nature meaningfully. It’s best to keep material flows clean if you are serious as a designer about long term (i.e. circular) sustainability.” - Mart Drake-Knight - Co-founder of Rapanui.

To scale your sustainable brand you need a line sheet that wows buyers.

As promised, more free content to help up startup sustainable fashion brands however I can.

Are you a startup fashion brand ready to take your line to the next level by starting to sell in stores? If yes, you are definitely going to need a line sheet. Whether you plan to sell your clothes in small local mom and pop stores, or retail giants like Nordstrom's the basic tools you need to reach out to potential buyers and present your line is always the same - and they start with a good line sheet. So, here is how to make one.

CMV: ethical lingerie is way too expensive

I made a decision a while ago to only get clothes from places that guarantee living wages to all their employees. I understand this decision implies spending more per garment, and hopefully this also means it will last longer than a fast-fashion equivalent. This is to clarify that, even as a poor grad student, I am willing to pay more than the 5 USD you get when places like fredericks or victoria secret go on sales.

I’ve found great brands that sell basics that don’t break my bank account (pact apparel undies are great) but I refuse to pay 30++ (25ish on sale) for a nice, sexy thong with lace in it. What in the world justifies cashing out so much money for such a little amount of fabric? Why does it cost almost the same as a basic ethical t-shirt that probably takes a lot more labor to make?

Is aliexpress as bad as shops like urban outfitters/Zara/ most high street shops

I’m in a bit of a predicament as I am trying to shop more sustainably for clothes. My issue is that are other shops that I would shop from using the same kind of sweatshops as aliexpress and if so it would be better to use aliexpress so the company takes less money and I do not pay extra for something which is the same. I have however noticed a quality difference from some items in the past but they often turn out to be identical dupes making me think these big companies use the same factories as aliexpress.

I NEED YOUR HELP!

Hi everybody! I’m a college student looking to start a sustainable sneaker brand and want to understand what a costumer would want out of my brand without bias of family and friends. Can you guys answer the following questions: 1)Do you think major footwear brands do a good enough job actively trying to take steps to save the planet? 2) Where do you think an independent brand can improve on where larger companies lack? 3) When buying a new causal sneaker how do you decide what to buy? 4) Is there anything you want to see in respects to the footwear industry?

How to tell if a brand is really "sustainable"

Hey everyone! I'm new on here and on Reddit so thought I'd introduce myself :) I'm Kristina and I'm a sustainable fashion and lifestyle blogger from Montreal, Canada. I've been passionate about sustainable fashion ever since I saw The True Cost and have since built a platform to share my research and hopefully help others save time as they navigate the confusing, often contradicting world of sustainable fashion. My most popular blog post so far is called "How to tell if a brand is really sustainable", I've gotten lots of positive comments on it and so I'll share the link here: https://thestoryofclothes.com/how-to-tell-if-a-brand-is-really-sustainable/. Looking forward to connecting with everyone <3

I’ve been working on a project for the last three years to create a platform where I can offer design & art products and at the same time help to resolve issues & give back. In the beginning, I could not decide what social issue to focus on, so after a lot of brainstorming, I took on them all.

Our first collection is called EARTH. I worked with an artist and we created five designs inspired by five critically endangered species in order to help organizations that are fighting for them. Our coming collections will also cover and contribute to issues like clean water, mental health, homelessness, equality. With always rotating collections and designs we aim to create a platform that goes beyond consumerism and does something for the whole planet. Our mission is to elevate human consciousness before it’s too late.

I thought my story would fit here, I’m not asking you to buy anything, but I would appreciate your feedback on the website and our story. https://urbanmavericks.co

In case you do want to join our mission, I’d be happy to offer a 15% discount with this code: MAVERICKMISSION

Thank you,

Rich

Sustainable Fashion Start-Up

Hi All,

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Warwick. Due to covid-19, it has been hard for me to find a job which motivated me to instead pursue something which I am really passionate about; to utilise my love for fashion to contribute to a cause worth supporting.

Since last June, I started the planning of my sustainable fashion brand 'D'Zage' with the goal to create products which have close to no ecological footprint whilst ensuring that ethicality is ensured from the sourcing to the packaging of the clothes. Though creating clothes which I can confidently say have no ecological footprint is not easy, I am passionate about this and I believe this is the right approach. All products are created 100% with factory cut-offs which are perfectly high quality and untouched fabric which would have otherwise been thrown to junkyards due to factories over-ordering. I moved to Hong Kong after this idea in order to be in close proximity to these factory cutoffs, and fast forward 6 months, we currently have over 20 styles on sale but haven't really been able to gain traction on social media. I'm posting here not only to promote my brand, but also I would love to hear your opinions and what suggestions you may have for me and my brand.

Of course, all support is greatly greatly appreciated and thank you all so much for your time! My brands Instagram handle is: instagram.com/dzagecollection Instagram

Thanks in Advance!

This is one of my favourites^. All products and labels are 100% made from factory cutoffs, and all packaging materials are biodegradable!

List of Small Sustainable fashion brands ! (x/posted in r/ethicalfashion)

Hey all my fellow ethical fashion folk! I posted this in another related sub, I hope that's okay? Here follows a list of small sustainable fashion brands I've found in my research.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

At the beginning of last year, in an effort to slowly refresh my wardrobe with well made, slow fashion pieces... I delved into a rabbithole of research about fabrics, dyes, manufacturing etc that ultimately ended in me finding lots of great shops on etsy.

I notice that a lot of people mention difficulty finding ethical clothes on etsy...their search function is just not set up in a way that makes it easy to find ethical/natural brands and it does seem to take a lot of searching...so I wanted to come here to share my favorite ethical and small shops on etsy (found through lots of trial and error) as well as a few tips for finding shops that sell unique clothing in your style. I'd love if this post turned into a place where others share the great etsy, insta, (or other) shops they've found that way we can all have a base of small ethical clothing creators to start with when we're looking for truly thoughtful, ethical garments. I think it would be really cool if we added to the ethical brands list that's pinned, as I feel there are just so many options that aren't represented there.

So, without further ado...

Tips for searching etsy:

-keywords...this is hard with etsy...I usually try things like "vegetable dye ______" "________ hand dyed" "custom dyed" "hand made" "hemp blend" "raw cotton" "raw linen" "handwoven" "made to order" "custom made"...it is truly a game of luck and how long you are willing to look to find the best shops or the perfect piece. I am always finding new brands and would also recommend instagram for natural small brands, they often have releases several times a year vs doing custom orders.

-be willing to pay more (sourcing fabrics, dyestuffs, creating patterns, cutting, dyeing, sewing, tweaking patterns to your specifications..all these things are hard, time consuming work, and the expertise it takes to combine all of these elements into a one of a kind garment that is going to fit you perfectly and suit your needs exactly for many yearss to come is worth it). There are always exceptions to make when trying to balance your needs and your budget, just do the best you can and remember that 1 piece that you wear over and over and really love is ultimately more valuable to you than 10 thrifted or fast fashion pieces that get little wear, or 20 starbucks coffees...but (obviously) not more valuable than a roof over your head or food on the table. I'm not suggesting everyone can afford the best quality clothes, but if you can, then I suggest that you don't waste your time with these giant eco fashion brands because sometimes you can find a garment made to your size for much the same price (and at times only about 20-30% more)

-be willing to wait longer (see something in your closet wearing out? start searching for the replacement. many of these garments are made to your measurements and color preferences and that takes time and loving care).

-ask questions... Do it! Most sellers will be happy to answer your questions in detail. I usually ask about where their fabric comes from, as well as what types of dyes they use and how they dispose of their wastes, who is sewing the clothes etc

-make exceptions..I am always willing to make exceptions for clothing that is hand made, super unique, exceptionally beautiful...because I believe in supporting these artists even if they aren't 'perfect'...as that's a pretty impossible standard!

Ethical Shops I'd recommend- (I will put the links at the very bottom for tidiness sake, please add any you'd like in the comments!)

:::Etsy:::

Anuttara Crafts- Seriously, check out this shop! (very unique vegdye hemp/cotton, silk, raw cotton, and wool creations that are stamped/embroidered with patterns she drew herself). I have an AMAZING warm hemp/cotton terry skirt and a pair of wool pants, both are winter staples for me this year and hopefully for many years to come. Especially with the hemp terry, the more I wear the skirt the more luscious the heavy fabric feels. Note that with this shop you can make some things to your measurements, and it takes at least 2 months to get to you...as the dyeing is done in bulk for a few pieces at a time, and the printing depends on humidity so it is not always suitable weather to make your piece).

Xusah- (handmade to your exact measurements and hand dyed to your preference, hemp/org cotton blends as well as a hemp/cotton fleece that is keeping me so warm right now). Xusah also often posts pre-made items at a slight discount and her practices are intentionally low waste. She lives in a yurt on the east coast and creates and dyes everything with her own two hands. You can even request lighter or darker shades of the many colors she offers and she sometimes offers the service of dyeing other natural garments whatever hue you prefer which is really great if you are creating a coordinate wardrobe where the colors are all complimentary. She is truly amazing to deal with and every piece I have from her is wearing in so well.

WildHarvest Studio- (handmade hemp/cotton blends, some fleece, some heritage color grown cotton, thermal cotton. Veg dyed) Jessica does not do made to order items at this time but she does seem to do a shop release every month or so! I have several of her pieces that are everyday staples, and her beautiful fern prints and mixed dye magick are amazing!

++Not as ethical (my opinion) but still hand dyed and hand made by one person operations:

Phases Of Bloom- (less eco friendly fabric (bamboo) but hers is apparently local? amazing hand plant dyed garments decorated with sacred plant stamps that she makes herself. I especially love that she grows some of her own dye plants or collects onion skins etc. from farmers market so there is very low waste). I am 100% in support of small makers of this sort and I have several pairs of underwear she made, as well as some super fleecy comfy/warm/cute tops, one of which I wear every day as a sort of bra or underlayer of my winter clothes. Zoe sometimes takes customs, and I think might currently be making Datura flower stamped panties for all you witchy/plant people out there. she sometimes shares on instagram when her customs are open @ phases.of.bloom

WoolenMoss- Wool garments in several colors and weights, made to your size (might be perfectly ethical, but I have not asked her about where her wool comes from and how it is dyed). I have leg warmers from this maker that I wear on a daily basis in the winter and I can tell that they will last for many many years to come

Kate Crochet Couture- Beautiful handmade one of a kind crochet clothing (I have not vetted the materials here but I like that they are made by one person!)

Yesterday People- Groooovy, made on demand (less waste), sustainability page looks pretty good

Purusha People- Tencel, yoga style clothes, bells, bra tops, tanks, hand screenprinted, eco conscious dyes, mostly made to order with some releases as well, most of the pieces are made by the two of them, some are made in LA by folks they hired and pay a fair wage)

++One person/small ethical seeming Instagram clothing brands I am aware of, but have not personally vetted! Feel free to add any info you might have on these brands in the comments <3

@ Zhinh -makes beautiful clothes, there are some fibres that are not ideal and I haven't asked about where it comes from, or the dyeing practices but again I'm on board to support small woman owned businesses

@ sister.nettle hand stamped, lovely clothes in several basic styles, eco fabrics

@ loverly_goods

@ serpentandbow amazing hand sewed and hand stamped garments created in a ritualistic manner

@ panty.witch makes all her pieces from scrap fabrics

@ l.v.d.f. one of a kind pieces

@ jenny_.k._ one woman operation, hand dyed natural fibres

@ brass_arrow
