Selling Clothes?

Any recommendations for selling clothes that actually leads to sales?

I have a lot of gently used work clothes that have been purchased in the last two years. I've tried taking them to local thrifts, but they always pass. I've tried Poshmark, but no luck making sales. I just looked into ThredUp and they want $14.99 upfront for processing.

Because I care for my clothes and they are in like new condition, I am hoping to get a little something for them and prefer a route that has a higher likelihood that the clothes will continue to be worn vs ending up in a landfill. Any recommendations?

Since this century, clothing waste export from Europe tripled!

article

The amount of used textiles exported from the European Union (EU) has tripled over the past two decades, and the amounts may increase further, according to the EEA briefing ‘EU exports of used textiles in Europe’s circular economy’. The briefing is based on a more detailed analysis by the EEA's European Topic Centre of Circular Economy and Resource Use.

Europe faces major challenges in the management of used textiles, which are to be collected separately in the EU by 2025. As reuse and recycling capacities in Europe are limited, a large share of discarded and donated clothing and other textile products are exported to Africa and Asia. Common public perceptions that used clothing donations are always of use in those regions do not reflect the reality. Once exported, the fate of used textiles is often uncertain, according to the EEA briefing which looks at the patterns of and trends in EU exports of used textiles from 2000 to 2019.

According to analysed data from the United Nations, EU exports of textiles have increased and shifted from mainly African destinations to both Africa and Asia. The briefing also shows how some challenges related to these exports are being addressed in current and proposed EU policies. In the EU strategy on sustainable and circular textiles, published in March 2022, the need for addressing the challenges from exports is specifically mentioned.

Key findings: The amount of used textiles exported from the EU has tripled over the past two decades from slightly over 550,000 tonnes in 2000 to almost 1.7 million tonnes in 2019. The amount of used textiles exported in 2019 was on average 3.8 kilogrammes per person, or 25% of the approximately 15 kg of textiles consumed each year in the EU. In 2019, 46% of used textiles exported from the EU ended up in Africa. The textiles primarily go to local reuse as there is a demand for cheap, used clothes from Europe. What is not fit for reuse mostly ends up in open landfills and informal waste streams. In 2019, 41% of used textiles exported from the EU ended up in Asia. Most of these textiles are directed to dedicated economic zones where they are sorted and processed. The used textiles are then mostly downcycled into industrial rags or filling, or re-exported for recycling in other Asian countries or for reuse in Africa. Textiles that cannot be recycled or re-exported likely end up in landfills. Bio-based fibre products: do they offer a ‘greener’ alternative? Bio-based fibres that are used in clothing and other textile products are often regarded as more sustainable alternatives, but a new technical report by the EEA’s European Topic Centre of Circular Economy and Resource Use demonstrates that this picture requires some caution.

While bio-based fibres offer potential to steer away from synthetic textiles made from plastics (mainly derived from oil and gas), they cause other environmental pressures, including water and land use related to agricultural activities, deforestation and fibre processing. Moreover, the report highlights that their bio-based origin does not free them from environmental concerns related to microfibres, waste and recyclability.

Rubi Labs - using enzymes to grow fabric

I just stumbled on this piece of paid content on CNN, obviously, it's got a commercial agenda. But this is the first time I've heard of anyone trying to do this and I thought it was fascinating:

https://sponsorcontent.cnn.com/edition/2022/fujitsu-uvance/neeka-mashouf/?utm_medium=cnn&utm_source=distak&utm_campaign=fujitsu22_A6_emea

Here's a link to the company itself: https://www.rubi.earth/technology

I can't see any reference to people actually using this tech in their clothing lines - be good to see if it becomes commercially viable.

I saw a brand using 37.5 Technology and claiming all these comfort and sustainability benefits of it. I don't understand the science behind it though and as with anything proprietary there is also information lacking.

Can anyone with more science knowledge explain if 37.5 actually seems legitimate and can do what it claims?

7 Ethical Fashion Ideas for 2023 in Sustainable Fashion

In 2023, sustainable fashion trends will focus on reducing the negative impact of the fashion industry on the environment and including eco-friendly materials.

There are 40 million garment workers globally, according to a report by the International Labor Organization. Eighty percent of the workforce is made up of women between the ages of 18 and 35. Many are required to work extremely long hours for wages that are below the minimum. One bright spot amid all the gloom is that sustainable fashion is currently being used to address many of these issues.

In the global fashion industry, sustainable fashion is becoming more and more fashionable. The industry is scrutinised from a sustainable standpoint in relation to issues like climate change, plastic pollution, deforestation, and overproduction. The fashion industry is on a mission to reinvent itself now that the average person is aware of how much the industry contributes to carbon emissions and the escalating climate crisis.

It is necessary to realise that ethical and sustainable fashion is not only a fad but rather an essential first step in addressing the industry's negative effects on the environment and society. Brands are responding by incorporating sustainable practises throughout the lifetime of their products as consumers look into sustainable solutions more and more. The industry is now aiming to support a greener fashion industry!

Sustainable fashion trends are expected to concentrate on lessening the negative effects of the fashion industry on the environment and using eco-friendly materials, like organic cotton and bamboo, in their production in 2023. In order to put more emphasis on circular fashion and advance reused, recycled, or repurposed clothing, they are currently employing sustainable techniques.

What's the piece of clothing you've worn the most # of times, and how many times have you worn it?

This is a follow-up to my post about how many years a garment should last, but many of you pointed out that the # of wears is probably a fairer metric.

So personally I have a coat that is 15+ years old, and I wear it about 70x / year (conservatively, and on average). That means I've gotten 1050 uses out of one coat. I've only washed it about 5 times before ever (once every few years) when it really warrants a wash. I know that this may not be the norm for people, but I honestly just want to know how many uses we can / should expect from our clothes.

Please let me know!

Good deal or not

I am planning to start selling some upcycled products this year (first by myself online). But now I got contacted by a -sort-of-cool(?)- store . They are a 'platform to promote local designers' (of which none i ever heard of).
Their conditions are: You have to rent a clothing rail for €400 a month + vat / a small shelf for accessoires for €200 (0,5 x0,5 m) + vat / bigger shelf €300 (+ vat 1x1m) . Online store costs 100/month
Than on top they take a cut of 30% of each sold item.

Oh yeah and they offer 'social media promotion' included (they post things on instagram facebook and pinterest) , which i am quite sceptical of

I wouldn't be able to do this at the moment time and money wise but I'm just wondering, is this a normal concept that small designer have to pay a fixed fee to even put their products in a store? I know 30 per cent cut is not a lot but all together.. it makes sense why the prices are quite ranked up.

My friend said it is a bad deal but what any professionals here that can offer some insight?

What's the best way to dispose of old running shoes?

I like running and I am wondering about what is the best way to dispose of an old pair of running shoes. I run about 800k in them and it's probably time for me to get a new pair before getting injured. The upper is fine and the main visible issue is that the sole of the left shoe wore off in the back.

As far as you know, is it best to trash them, donate them or leave them at a Nike shop in their recycling bin? Any reference and suggestion is very welcome!

what to do with unwanted clothes

  1. can anyone help me with like... cutting down on clothes? i've been trying to do this for a long time now but just am taking so long to take action cause i'm having a hard time thinking about the outcome of the action. i really just want like much fewer clothes, but i don't want to just give them all to a place like goodwill cause i heard that goodwill sells a lot of their clothes to developing nations and then the local economy of that developing nation is disrupted, and that's not good.
  2. [7:11 AM]i basically have collected all the 100% cotton and 100% linen clothing items from my closet and i was just going to give them away, because my thinking is that i don't have to have as much control over those cause even if they end up in the trash or owned by people who aren't conscientious with their clothing's impact on the environment, it'll be okay because the material won't like leech microplastics during washing and it'll biodegrade if it gets into the ecosystem.
  3. [7:12 AM]my thinking was that it makes more sense for me to keep the clothes that have synthetic materials because i plan to be more conscientious with them (using a guppyfriend to wash, etc). does this make sense to everyone, am i missing anything? i also have like way more clothes than i want though still. is there a good and responsible way to get rid of these clothes with synthetic materials? and same with shoes?
  4. [7:13 AM]the goal is to minimize but i'm trying to be responsible about it- i don't just want to give it all away in bulk with no regard for the impact of that decision
  5. [7:13 AM]i've tried to read articles about it but i get overwhelmed so i thought it might be easier to just speak to people person to person.

Can anybody recommend rain shoe covers/gaiters?

I'd really like to buy these rain shoe covers, but I'm almost positive they're waterproofed with PFCs.

I understand there are many sustainable choices for proper rain boots, and I've got a few bookmarked if I do go that route, but I'm trying to keep my wardrobe/accessories to a bare minimum, and buying more footwear is as undesirable to me as buying these PFC gaiters. On top of that, gaiters like these are easier to fold/roll and take up less space than similarly-sized rubber rain boots.

I've searched high and low for a sustainable equivalent to rain gaiters that cover the shoe entirely and not just ankle/lower calf like these for example.

Thanks so much!
