[Question for Brands Lurking] Sustainability Certifications and Third-Party Verifications: Worth the Effort or Room for Improvement?

Just throwing this out there for any brands in the crowd, big or small, that are navigating the sustainability journey. We see a lot of talk about third-party certifications and verifications like Fair Trade, Energy Star, and Rainforest Alliance. But what’s the real deal?

Is getting these badges of sustainability really making a difference for your brand? Does it help with visibility, trust, or even just making your operations more sustainable? Or are there parts of this process that feel like they could be better, more transparent, or more helpful?

Would love to hear your real, on-the-ground experiences and thoughts. And hey, if you're not a brand but have opinions on these certifications, feel free to jump in too!

Anyone has experience with vegan leather pleather synthetic leather pantented leather?

Imo they are pretty similar made using a manmade leather like material bonded o to a fabric backing, similar to the Genuine leather where real leather flakes mixed with synthetic onto a backing.

while we can avoid them they are like pest that usually exist in most products especially the small items. there are also things where you cant really avoid them if you really like the products.

while flaked leather can be fixed using angelus leather paint it wont be as good as original.

recently i heard people talk about applying angelus neutral finisher onto brand new pleathers as a seal, and imo if possible to get to the underside which is the fabric a layer too to seal off both sides. This might be better than whatever aerospace 303 or other plastic care products recommended sonce the angelus lays a layer of coat on and are flexible

anyone has experience in this?

We would really value feedback from you - please do not shy away from telling us truthfully what you are thinking!

We know we are not the cheapest hoodie on the market :) but our quality is outstanding. That is why we would need to know whether the message currently comes across to you, or whether we need to do anything completely different on our site.

Can anyone verify/give insight on a few statistics?

Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone here can help me verify a few stats:

  1. The value of the (entire) global apparel industry is estimated at 1.53 trillion USD

  2. The value of the global sustainable fashion/apparel market is about 7.69 billion USD

  3. The value of the global secondhand fashion/apparel market is estimated to be worth 177 billion USD

I realize these categories aren’t exactly comparable, but do these numbers look correct, (or usable)? If they’re right, the percentage of sustainable fashion being produced is TINY, and I can’t account for how the secondhand market seems so large when so many clothes are thrown away.

TIA!

Where to promote Brand New Sustainable Fashion Projects?

Hello everyone, my name is Julian and a few days ago I launched a family sustainable fashion project through Kickstater (Crowfuding). Our pillar is local and limited production, and we all know what this entails, which is why we decided that, given its costs, crowdfuding for our first collection could allow us to give visibility and make ourselves known. However, I do not find many platforms or media (blogs/podcast) that allow this type of project to be promoted without being paid. Do you have any sites to recommend where I can promote my brand?

For the curious, the brand name is Kami Apparel, and it is from Barcelona - Spain, the campaign page is: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kamiapparel/kami-traditional-japanese-hawaiian-shirts?ref=590srs, I hope that you like it, and if you have feedback please share it!

niche/odd jobs in the fashion industry

i’ve been working in mass market/corporate design for a couple years out of college…. i know there’s average to good money to be made if you stick with it and i understand the paths within corporate. but working in an office all day is depressing and i’m overcome by wanting to try out more seasonal working/hands on jobs and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of them? from like. being a pattern cutter to a dry cleaner’s tailor— i’m just curious but pretty much everything you google is buyer/merchant or influencer… i enjoy working with my hands and want some experience in that before i’m old— i can do corporate then! i’m curious about hidden in plain sight paths for younger person; no worries if you don’t know the details/if it’s a vague thought, open to hearing!

Snatch buttons or donate?

Hi peeps I have a dilemma.

I have this white blazer with a red wine stain on it, that is almost, but not completely gone. I barely wore it before the stain in the first place, and I don’t find the fit flattering on me… So either way, I want to get rid of it.

I like to make garments myself through various methods and thought about just snatching the buttons off of it for a future project but I have no desire to keep it around for the fabric, even though it’s a sturdy material.

The issue is that I feel it’s a waste of a very decent blazer that I’m sure someone else could get many years of use out of, given they could bleach the stain out. (Or I could do it.)

So my question is, if you were me, would you donate the blazer in it’s entirety or would you take the buttons and trash the rest? Third option?

(I guess this is kind of a collectivism vs. Individualism question?)

Where to buy cotton socks and underwear?

I tried Etsy but $10+ per item (and that’s on the cheap side!) for underwear is ridiculous. I want underwear that is 100% cotton (waist band excluded), but would be okay with 90% cotton as well. For the socks I want it to be at least 85% cotton (or any other natural fiber)(I understand elastic is important for sock fit and durability). I’m looking for durable ankle socks, preferably thick.

If you know of where I can purchase either of these items for a reasonable price please drop links below. Thanks!

Wool/Cashmere/Alpaca Coat

Hi all - I’m on the hunt for a women’s wool/cashmere/alpaca/camel coat in mid/plus size. Really hard to find anything that is a good % natural fiber, much less something with certifications regarding that fiber. I’m in the EU and have tried the following options already:

  • the curated - sadly, slightly too small in their XXL, particularly in the chest area
  • sezane - I have the Johnson coat in the largest size they make it in (EU46) but this season it is slightly too small for me (again, largely a bust size issue). This one is cut with a small amount of polyamide, the most I’d like of a synthetic.

I’m looking for an overcoat, the Johnson’s length or longer. I’m eyeing some options from Boden but these are also cut with synthetics and include a polyester lining.

I’d also looked at Saint + Sofia’s options but again, the longer coats this season appear to be cut with acrylic and other nasties.

I especially like double breasted or something with an asymmetrical closing - wrap style or something with a lot of waist definition is not great for me. If you know of any leads as to where I can look, it would be much appreciated!

Hello r/SustainableFashion community!

I'm excited to share my passion project: CIRQFASH - a campaign I've kickstarted on Instagram to promote the essential shift from fast fashion to sustainable and circular fashion practices.

Why CIRQFASH?

🌏 The environmental footprint left by the fast fashion industry is staggering. With tons of textile waste, excessive water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions, the impact on our planet is undeniable.

πŸ“Š Through the CIRQFASH campaign, I aim to shed light on these pressing issues by sharing eye-opening statistics, revealing the true cost of our consumption patterns.

🌿 But it's not all grim! By highlighting the amazing work of sustainable fashion brands and businesses that prioritize eco-friendly practices, I hope to inspire a wave of change in how we consume fashion.

What to Expect from CIRQFASH on Instagram:

  • Regular posts detailing the environmental harms of fast fashion, coupled with actionable advice on how you can make a change.
  • Spotlights on sustainable fashion brands, showcasing their unique stories and eco-friendly initiatives.
  • Engaging content, like polls, quizzes, and challenges, to foster a vibrant community of eco-conscious fashion enthusiasts.

How Can You Support?

  1. πŸ“² Follow CIRQFASH on Instagram! Your support means the world, and each follower strengthens our collective voice against fast fashion.
  2. πŸ”„ Share our content! The more people we reach, the greater the impact we can make.
  3. πŸ’¬ Engage with our posts! Start discussions, ask questions, and let's create a dynamic community passionate about sustainable fashion.

Together, we can make a difference and steer the fashion industry towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable future. Thanks for your support, and looking forward to connecting with many of you on Instagram! ✨

I love some of her pieces but have always been doubtful of the quality and sustainability, especially as the pieces aren't that pricey (but also not that cheap if actually fast fashion). She has some true vintage pieces but also a bunch of things that seem to be mass produced for resell (eg. Kilky brand). How do you feel about 3D body scanning?

Do you think it is good to use to help create tailored pieces/not be wasteful to the environment or it’s not the best because of lack of accuracy? What are your thoughts? Is there another solution?

Plant based "leather" bags?

Currently shopping for a briefcase or backpack. I LOVE the look of embossed leather but I'm not a big fan of animal products for the most part. I don't want vegan leather as most of it is plastic.

Are there any companies that have mastered the various plant leathers I've heard about? I've read about so many through the years but don't know of any that have actually done it well.

Data Analytics in the Fashion Industry

Data analytics is revolutionizing the fashion industry by providing valuable insights into consumer preferences, optimizing supply chain management, streamlining operations, and driving innovation. Fashion companies can understand consumer preferences at a granular level by analyzing data from various sources. They can also improve supply chain management by accurately forecasting demand and optimizing their supply chain networks. Data analytics plays a crucial role in streamlining operations and inventory management, leading to improved productivity and reduced costs. Furthermore, it unlocks new avenues for innovation, such as 3D body scanning technology. Embracing data analytics is now a necessity for fashion business owners to stay ahead of the competition. Just out of curiosity, will you trade your old laptops and electronics for fashion items ?

I am trying to understand what motivates people for recycling. I for sure know that people will trade their old smart phone for money, but I want to understand is money the only motivating factor ?

This is not a survey or any kind. I just saw a post on u/sustainability on trading phone for money, so just got curious to know what else.

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Brand similar to ovate??

I loooove Ovate! Small batch clothing, gothic style, all natural fabrics, sewn by hand. It’s literally everything I could ask for, unfortunately since it’s so small there’s often not a lot of options and I’m looking for other small brands like this to buy classy basics from. I also shop on resale sites and second hand but sometimes it’s difficult to find what I’m looking for. If anyone knows other brands with a similar style to Ovate, please let me know!

Designers – Who are your target customers?

A question to all of my independent sustainable fashion designers here! Who are you target customers? What are their demographics? What age range are they?

Any information would be great!
