I'm looking into starting a sustainable fashion service and would love your input. I created a survey so if you're feeling a little bored & want a distraction please fill it in! As I said, it's relating to ethical fashion, but anyone who wears clothes is welcome to fill it in.

Thanks so much, I'm eternally grateful! πŸ’š

The future of fashion in the sharing economy

Considering how things have played out over the last few weeks, how do you think the fashion segment of the sharing economy is going to respond?

Will there still exist a market for shared and pre used fashion? Will people opt back into their old consumer habits and purchase fast fashion items knowing they are safe, clean and hygienic?

What will all the spell out for fashion waste in the coming months and years?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks.

HELP! Interviews for School Project about r/SustainableFashion! HElp!

Hello everybody! My name is a Laurel, and I am a freshman from Arizona State University. For my English 101 class, I am doing a project about online communities. I chose a community regarding sustainable fashion because it is a topic I am very interested in. For my project, I need to interview at least 2 group members. So if you are a part of the r/SustainableFashion community please help me out! You could do so by responding to the following questions in the comments asap:

  1. Why are you interested in sustainable fashion?
  2. How would you define sustainable fashion?
  3. How long have you been a part of the r/SustainableFashion community?
  4. What have you learned about sustainable fashion from this online community?
  5. Does sustainable fashion effect your daily life?
  6. In what ways have you personally interacted with members of this community?
  7. Would you recommend r/SustainableFashion to those hoping to make more sustainable fashion choices?
  8. What are some positive and negative aspects of this community?

Just a simple response to each question will do. Thank you so much! Enjoy your day! <3 Sending love to all in these troubled times!

How do sustainable practices of a brand affect our willingness to buy?

Dear fellow redditors,

I am currently working on a project, which investigates the sustainability trend in fashion and how it affects our willingness to buy. I have compiled a small survey which will greatly help in my research, and shouldn’t take more than 4-5 minutes to fill out, and for which I will be eternally grateful!

Participants across all age groups and genders are welcome!

P.S. I will be more than happy to share my findings with those interested - just leave your email under the last question :)

New Boutique looking for emerging sustainable fashion brands!

Hi everyone!!

I am working on opening up an online sustainable/ethical clothing boutique. I know this is becoming more prevalent in the market with bigger brands. I'd really like to focus on smaller and emerging brands in helping to connect designers with consumers!

I am still trying to nail down my target market. I will probably start with just women's clothing, but would like to do men's as well and even unisex (??). I am looking for clothing that is simple and timeless, but not necessarily just basics.

Do you know of any brands that are looking for stockists? Appreciate the help!

Pre Order. What are your thoughts?

So we are thinking of creating a system for the pre-order of our future collections. Instead of we guessing how many people are going to buy, we can make them for the numbers that really will be selling, which is going to reduce garment waste as well. Do you think this is a good idea? Love to hear your thoughts on this.

By the way, stay home and go visit our online store.

take care,

In January and February, we had so many things planned for 2020 but due to the coronavirus pandemic, we had to put these projects to a halt. Looking for "non-slippy" sustainable active wear - recommendations needed!

So I am looking for a new pair of leggings, but I have some requirements of them. I train on rope and trapeze, and from my own experience I have found that "slippy" fabrics like lycra really impact my ability to grip on the apparatus, and fabrics which feel more like a t-shirt grip better.

My problem is, all sustainable brands for active wear that I am aware of exist online, so I can't go into a shop and physically touch the fabric myself.

Has anyone bought leggings from a sustainable brand that fits this requirement? I would really appreciate some recommendations.

Thrift or buy?

I was wondering is it more sustainable to buy new slow fashion from sustainable and ethical brands or to thrift second hand fast fashion? Also, brands tend to focus on either being sustainable (offsetting carbon emissions/organic material) or ethical (paying fair wages), which is the better brand to choose in that case?

Because we can't offer 40% discounts to everyone we are limiting them to 100. If you want one, please PM me and I will send it to you. :)

After a year of hard work - I have finally released my first range of shirts for my new brand. We use only Organic Hemp & Organic Cotton. Please take a look, and support an ethical brand, trying to get off the ground.

Hey guys - Please check out my new Hemp clothing brand. We are vegan, ethical, and sustainable.

It took a long time to find the perfect manufacturer to work with who aligned with my values on sustainability and ethics. They grow all of the hemp and organic cotton themselves, make the yearn, and knit the fabric into our custom made shirts, and have a shared mission working towards a sustainable future for fashion..

I am crowdfunding on Kickstarter through March first, because my manufacturer has a high minimum order quantity, and I don't have the funds to place the order outright without the sales, so I am asking for support. In return I am offering the shirts at a highly reduced price, just to get me started.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hempton/hempton-super-plant-sustainable-t-shirt-endure-adventure

This is an absolute dream for me, and I've enjoyed it so much - putting my brand out there, and teaching people about the damaging effects of the fast fashion industry, and spreading the word about the sustainability of hemp.

I would appreciate so much of you could support me, and if you could share this with anyone else you think might be interested.

Thanks so much guys! :)

How can fashion be sustainable and what do fashion brands do to make clothing more sustainable?

A year ago I never thought about the importance of fashion being sustainable. Nowadays it has become an important part of my life. „Sustainable“ refers to causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore being able to continue for a long time (Cambridge Dictionary). There are a lot of things you can do, to have a more sustainable wardrobe, such as buying clothes at used-consignment shops and thrift stores, renting clothing for some time and buying clothes from sustainable brands. Before I did some research I used to ask myself „what do sustainable brands do to make clothing more sustainable then fast fashion brands?“ Well, it turns out that they do a lot. The clothing brand „bleed“ for example harvests by hand to save small animals and insects. They try to conserve water and do not use pesticides or herbicides for materials like cotton, hemp and so on, from which they, later on, make cloth for the clothing. Sustainable brands exchange eco-unfriendly materials with eco-friendly materials. For example they use cork instead of leather. Sustainable companies also do not support child labour or any labour at all. This is the main reason I decided to only support sustainable fashion from now on. I find it incredible, what we can do to be more sustainable and hope that more people realize how important sustainability is. What do you think about the ways sustainable brands make fashion more sustainable? Looking forward to your opinions :)

Denim experts weigh in on the last decade

Stretchy jeans and fast fashion consumption trends are at odds with the growing demand for sustainability and smarter resource conservation. I found it interesting that most gave the industry an A - B+ range while Adriano Goldschmied (founder of AG) gave it a C.

https://sourcingjournal.com/denim/denim-business/stretch-skinny-sustainability-2010s-denim-adriano-goldschmied-levis-nydj-185802/

"Maybe future generations will design fabrics that look like they were made from cheap polyester, with a high shine in the weft, but with sustainable fibers. This might be a funny joke, but it could happen when future designers look at this period in time. They will be shocked by the level of polyester we used."

A Sustainable, and Ethical Clothing Brand - A small, Women Start - Up. We make basics from Hemp and Certified Organic Cotton, making our all our shirts in a Fair Wear Certified, ethical factory.

Hi Guys! (Click to see picture, I'm unsure why you can't see the preview on the home page)

The Hempton Classic Shirt - Arctic White

Last week, I launched my very own Vegan, Sustainable & Ethical Clothing Brand for women. I decided to launch Hempton after quitting my job and travelling the world for almost 2 years - I travelled over 25,000km overland on public transport across Africa, Asia, Middle East and Europe. One of my biggest frustrations was that much of the clothing for travel is made from wool, or synthetics (which is very bad for the environment).I would love if you could check out my page here :) It is just me, so a very small business. My factory is ethical and is certified by the Fair Wear Foundation, as this was a big reasoning for launching my own brand - How animals, and people are treated is the most important thing to me personally.

You can read more on my story on this link. I'm sure if you take a look you will see how passionate I am, and how much I have tried to find the most sustainable, and ethical option. Thanks for reading. If you have any questions, please ask. It's something I've been working on for almost a year now and am very passionate about. I hope you like my brand and product. If you can support to help me get off the ground - It would mean the world to me :)

Thank you for reading,

which is more sustainable, rayon or cotton?

This article breaks down the pros and cons of rayon vs cotton using three main categories, manufacturing, performance (which creates the best products), and end life - does it biodegrade or sit in a landfill.

I always thought natural cotton was the better choice, but, for me, one of the wildest realizations is that even if I choose to buy cotton clothing, I am still indirectly helping the cupro rayon industry which uses cotton industry waste to make a special type of rayon called cupro. And, did you know that people are starting to be fed the used cotton seeds primarily in the form of cotton oil (that can't be healthy).

Supply chains are so much more complex than often reported in mainstream media.

HEMP - The Future of Fashion | Sustainable & Ethical.

Hey, I’m Hannah.

Two years ago, I left my 9 to 5 corporate job to take a career break and travel the world with my husband. Our goal was to explore less-visited places and to do a long trip travelling overland as much as possible, without flying to reduce our carbon footprint. . We travelled over 25,000 kilometres by bus, minivan, car, train, and boat, across Europe, Africa, and Asia. We stayed in locals’ homes, hitchhiked with locals, and ate in local restaurants, hoping to learn as much as possible about different people and cultures.

On safari in Zambia

For over 18 months we backpacked, carrying only a 10 kilogram backpack each. So it was important that we could cram as many durable, reliable, and versatile clothes in that pack, to use over and over again.

Whilst travelling, I found that the only options were sporty and durable but unfashionable hiking clothes, or more fashionable but lower quality and less durable clothes from “fast fashion” high street brands . I began to research this more, and also realised how bad lots of our clothing is for the environment.

https://preview.redd.it/4122ay8b8dl41.png?width=3732&format=png&auto=webp&s=d15eccd2591c20a7eca56f50a66fd8676622158a

https://preview.redd.it/w412tdi99dl41.jpg?width=3732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a908cb22a06abcaaf3229c74beec23e9d4c351a

For instance, it takes 2,700 litres of water to produce 1 cotton t-shirt! That is almost 3 years of drinking water for the average person. And nowadays, so much clothing is only worn a few times and then thrown out.

So I decided to make my own travel clothes, and founded a sustainable, and ethical clothing brand called Hempton. We only use Hemp and certified organic cotton.

https://preview.redd.it/ez0gv16zadl41.png?width=3732&format=png&auto=webp&s=0447f7d31e15c8520258d796009c2efad7949cf8

It was not long before I learned a few key things that were instrumental in my decision to form Hempton:

  • Fashion in Western countries is centred around Fast Fashion: clothes that are made quickly and cheaply, but that consumers quickly throw out. While in developing countries we visited, people owned less and kept their clothes for much longer.
  • It was difficult for me to find clothing for my trip that was durable and versatile enough to endure long-term travel: holding up to both the heat and the cold, strenuous outdoor activities and also long travel days, and still being feminine and fashionable and comfortable.
  • I saw so much waste and pollution on my trip, so I wanted to make something that would not be harmful to the environment and would not contribute to pollution, global warming, and climate destruction.
  • I also realised how many people (including children) are either in forced labour, or are working in awful conditions, often being abused, and being paid less than a liveable wage.

Hemp is nicknamed the Super Plant because it is so easy to grow, so it is much more sustainable and better for our planet.

Check out these awesome reasons hemp is better:

It also has all the awesome qualities I want from my clothes, such as:

I also took time travelling around Asia to visit and meet with local factories, until I found a vertically integrated manufacturer that uses only certified organic fibres, uses solar power and had a mission to be sustainable, and fair to all the workers. The factory is certified by The Fair Wear Foundation, which ensures all the workers are treated well, paid fairly, have health benefits, and much more.

Custom Sustainable packaging?

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping to make my packing more sustainable and environmentally friendly. I'm wondering if anyone has any leads on companies that produce envelopes of paper, but with a clear little plastic window to be able to see a preview of the product inside?

Sort of like envelopes you receive in the mail with the address window, but in envelope form?

Hey guys, I'm an ecopreneur. We basically recycle plastic bags (LDPE) creating this watches, the plastic is retrieved from polluted rivers helping the local wildlife to survive keeping plastic away from the water. We're really close to reach the goal, that's why I need please to check our project :)

Sustainable fashion at SXSW

We are having a conversation about the impact of "building a conscious wardrobe" in Austin next week as part of SXSW. We'll debate materials, supply chains, technology and community.. trying to separate the idealistic from the realistic, while also connecting with people to hear more about what's exciting, what's missing, what's next! Please come by and introduce yourself if you'll be at SXSW!

would you add a tag to your garment for tracing and re-cycling purposes?

hi again friends,

we have been prototyping a social venture and I value your feedback and opinions. It is a tech system that would generate unique item IDs for any quality secondhand (and eventually newly produced, designed for life) items. This ID would make it easier to discover and resell clothing, and also allow you to earn royalties on future resales forever (to incentivize everyone to keep items in the ecosystem as long as possible). It would incentivize brands to make higher quality garments.

one starting point is to ask people to register and tag each garment they want in the system. You would have to iron or sew on the tag for this V1 idea to work.

what do you think?

(thank you!)

A chrome extension that instantly notifies you if an item you're already shopping for is being sold secondhand for an insane discount.

sustainable accessories

I'm a weaver in Kentucky making sustainable clothing and accessories. I use a floor loom to produce one of a kind, wearable art using natural materials. I primarily use Tencel (made from wood pulp), organic cotton, hemp and linen. I never use any synthetic materials or yarns with synthetic binders, so my products are biodegradable. I'm currently making scarves, bags, jackets and shirts, with hopes of moving on to pants and dresses in the near future. What kind of accessories do you look for when shopping sustainable?

Please let me know what you think. Any feedback is appreciated!

Ecolux Clothing

I just learned about a sustainable brand that makes everything by hand in LA. It's run by an all female team and they use all organic and sustainable materials and their mission is pretty cool. Check them out! I believe they just ship in the US for now but its great to see emerging women run sustainable brands.

Market research for a brand

Hey fellow sustainable fashion supporters - My name is Maddi.

I'm the owner of a clothing brand that makes high performance clothing in classic designs. Our fabric is made of non-mulesed merino wool and our products are made-to-order in the USA. We serve purposeful, persevering women with clothing that impacts their daily lives. I want to offer clothing that you really need. I'm doing a market research campaign this week and if you want to help me, I would ask you to fill out this form - it will impact the direction the business goes.

And as a thank you you'll get a 10% off code. The link for the form is here.

How DuPont may avoid paying to clean up a toxic 'forever chemical' - PFAS

"Cleanups and health care costs tied to the "forever chemicals" known as PFAS could reach into the billions. Has DuPont found a way not to pay?" A report from NBC News.

Many products contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), but in fashion they can be found in outdoor gear for liquid repellency.

"Manufactured between the 1940s and the early 2000s, the chemicals have been associated with high cholesterol, increased liver enzymes, decreased vaccination response, birth defects, pregnancy-induced hypertension and testicular and kidney cancer, according to a 2016 EPA study."
