I made an upcycled version of the Alexander Wang Scrunchie Bag. Now there is multiple reasons to make your own instead of supporting this designer. Also you save a lot of coin on the way. Its quite easy however I needed two attempts to get it right ,) don't take shortcuts, it will screw you over ;)

Shop slow, shop right
Today’s society encourages us to consume more quickly than ever before. We can afford to discard items we no longer want and replace them promptly, thanks to mass production. As a result, things are engineered to last less time and to be of worse quality. To grow the necessary raw materials, large amounts of water, pesticides and other hazardous chemicals, like fabric dyes, are required. These are harming the Earth’s soil, biodiversity, and local water sources. which is why I’m here to tell you about switching to Sustainable, Slow fashion
- Pour some love into your existing closet. Look through some old pieces and try to remember some good memories that you shared while wearing them.
- If you are struggling with where to start, pull out some guides to help you out. Here are some you can check out: Fairtrade clothing, Why slow fashion, Fashion Consumption
- Build a Capsule wardrobe: Check out some basic pieces at Upciclo Fashion from bamboo to style up or down depending on the occasion.
- Keep in mind to make thoughtful choices and purchases. Begin by resisting the desire to make impulsive purchases. Before you go out and get a new pair of shoes, call a buddy or look through your current wardrobe to see what would go with what you already have. When you’re ready to buy anything new, check out sustainable high-quality options like this Bamboo Workout Tee that will last you a long long time.
- Do some quality research. If you come across a new slow fashion business, take the time to research the firm and make sure you’re spending your money wisely. Is it gradual, long-term, and ethical for all parties involved? Is there any information on how and where the clothing is made available from the brand? How many collections does the brand release each year? Answering these questions will help you make the right choices for the environment and well-being of our kids and grandkids.

Confessions, Online Thrifting and Sustainability
So, I have to admit, I love clothing. I love it a lot, and getting something new for my wardrobe is always a thrill. I generally wear out my clothes until they're pretty beaten out and then spend some time acquiring new pieces and swapping out old ones. I've also started upcycling some of my old stuff to spice things up, as well as shopping in local and charity thrift stores, but it's labour intensive and time consuming. I was so excited when I discovered Poshmark, because it gave me access to a more sustainable way to thrift. Thrifting can be inaccessible depending on where you live, and the selection is often limited- I have seen so many cute pieces which were just not my size. But the internet kind of eliminated that problem. I could find whatever I wanted in the exact size I needed!
However, I quickly realized Poshmark, Facebook Market Place and Kijiji are not as sustainable as I thought. I know for a fact that you do not have over 6000 preloved items to sell. I know for a fact all those "NWT Leggings" are not actually used. And I'm so disappointed that this space has been infiltrated by profit hunters. I have come up with a list of "red flags" when shopping the used market for clothing. Is there anything I should add?
- NWT (New with tag)
- Over 100 listings from the same user
- "Seller speak" in the description (ie. "Rare, "Hard to get", "Great for pairing with jeans")
- "Closets" or listings with a wide range of sizes (it's possible people's weight fluctuates, but I often find profile's with other red flags will be selling clothing ranging from XXS-XXL sizes)
- Profiles featuring only one brand

Eco-Warrior or Eco-nomist? A recycled textile study
Hello everyone, I am a fashion technology student from India, and am currently jointly working with a recycled textile manufacturer on a study regarding the ideal cost of recycled garments, and the supply chain constraints to achieving mainstream adoption here in India. I would really appreciate it if you took some time to fill out the form linked below. I'll be making the data public later on, and will share it on this sub too if people are interested.
You can fill the form even if you're not from India, we just want to know your perspective, and feedback.
This study is going to be submitted to a major recycled textile manufacturer and its findings made public to help improve our carbon footprint and the share of sustainable products in major brand portfolios across India.
All data given here is anonymous and will not be shared with any third party.
This survey is conducted by the students of NIFT New Delhi.
If you have a moment to spare, we request you to take a few minutes to fill out our survey. This survey should only take about five minutes of your time to complete.
Thanks for your help!

Can't Find Ethical/Sustainable Athletic Shoes That I Can Afford
Hey all, new to the sub, but figured this would be the best place to ask for advice on this front. I'm in need of a new pair of athletic shoes (primarily used for walking, but I occasionally try to run.) I'm looking for an ethical brand to buy, but I'm also in a bit of a difficult spot financially. The Allbirds Tree Dashers sound like a great shoe, but I'm having a hard time justifying $125 for shoes. (Note: all my life I've bought bargain shoes from Target and T. J. Maxx. I don't think I've ever paid over $60 for shoes. If I'd been buying Nike and Adidas all my life the switch would be much more natural.)
Does anyone know of an ethical shoe brand where I could get some athletic shoes for a little less? I'm willing to pay anywhere from $80-90. I understand that part of sustainable fashion is being okay with the higher price point to ensure that everyone is paid a living wage and the right materials are being used. If I need to end up going with the Allbirds, I can. I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask to see if I'm missing something.

some of my sustainability initiatives: I try to keep my designs simple but still special for long-term wearing and try to avoid trends, I use only eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton, linen and tencel. I reuse all scraps and the ones that are too small, I donate to a paper maker.

I see a lot of "sustainable brand" questions here
Why don't just shop used? Like going to the second-hand/thrift store, using apps like vinted, or just looking at eBay? It's probably the most sustainable option out there because you're not making any new clothes. I'm just curious because I didn't shop new (except for underwear/bras/socks) in years.

Recycled bikinis from fishing netsπ§π
hiiiiii, if you're interested in new small sustainable businesses check out www.bbcierva.com.
BBcierva is a eco swimwear brand that uses ECONYL, a recycled nylon from discarded fishing nets.
The story: I started BBcierva in 2020 after realising most swimwear companies outsource their labour & factories to countries with cheaper costs and labour and do not use sustainable materials. I looked around and couldn’t find a brand that resonated with me that was made locally ,eco friendly and affordable so I created BBcierva. Inspired by angels around the world, BBcierva was created to provide beautiful pieces for angels who seek ethical swimwear while still being affordable.
BB was inspired by a multitude of influences. Common themes that support bb are sustainability, nature, spirituality, space and science.
The collections feature designs that are hand crafted for the perfect fit, and colours that will inspire positivity. Each bikini is handmade by me in the UK and each season captures a theme of colours, that relate to specific ideas. The first season features shades of blue and were named after the the lost city/continent of Atlantis, Lemuria and the flying island Laputa.
Sustainability π§π
8 million tonnes of waste are discarded in our oceans & 640 thousand tons of fishing nets are abandoned at the bottom of the ocean EVERY YEAR.
BBcierva is committed to working with high end recycled fabrics made from ECONYL: a 100% regenerated nylon yarn derived from discarded fishing nets and other textile waste. This fabric can be recycled infinitely without losing quality, supporting a circular fashion industry. Using regenerated nylon also helps to clean the seas where entanglement in abandoned nets causes the deaths of many thousands of whales, dolphins and other marine life every year.
Packaging:
BB is also dedicated to recycled and biodegradable packaging. Each step of packaging the bikinis has been carefully chosen to ensure sustainability.
- The grey postal bags with your address on are made from recycled polythene, which can be recycled after use.
- The ribbon wrapped around the box is produced using waste clear PET plastic bottles, this process eliminates the creation of virgin yarn, meaning there is no oil extracted from the ground. Also 20% of the energy used in the production process is solar powered & 90% of the water used is recycled in the manufacturing process.
- The boxes are made from 77% recycled kraft materials and is fully recyclable.
- The tissue paper is recycled, PH neutral, resists running, bleeding and fading & made from 99% recycled pulp fibres. 35% of the electricity used to make this product is produced from renewable sources.
- The bag the bikini is placed inside are recycled 50 micron polythene bags, made from 100% polyethylene virgin waste.
- The swing tags with the BBcierva logo on are made from 350gsm recycled card.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and follow on insta www.instagram.com/bbcierva

Opinions on sustainable merch?
Hi guys! I'm a student doing a project about fan economy, overconsumption, and sustainable fashion and I need some help.
When I was doing my background research, I found that merch (clothes) could be more unsustainable than fast fashion - people buy fast fashion to wear, but buy merch to support their fav artists, and some merch has never be worn and ends up in landfills.
So I'm looking for new possibilities for merch - for artists or brands, they could offer services of reprinting clothes for their fans on tour or in record stores, collaborate with sustainable clothes brands, etc. For fans, they could try to recycle and upcycle their merch.
What do you think of this idea? Please contact me if you have any opinions and want to talk about it!
Thank you >_<

Advice for getting rid of stock from failed sustainable clothing business?
I hope this is is okay to post here! I'm not trying to sell anything here. My goal is to get rid of these locally (CA,US)
Back in 2019 I was pregnant and had this idea for an organic/sustainable affordable baby clothing line, I went through a lot of work sourcing a fantastic manufacturer and making a website and everything. Baby came around and has had medical issues that took my focus away. I have since regretted doing it all together. I feel guilt for creating waste with so many clothing options out there. So I basically have 500 organic cotton onesies in my garage that need a home. So far my current plan is reaching out to local kids clothing boutiques and offer them at cost, if that doesn't work I'll be donating them all. Obviously recouping some of the costs would be ideal. Is there another way I just haven't thought of yet?

What are some basic characteristics you expect from true sustainable fashion brands that Big brands don't get?
What are some non-negotiable/non-compromisable aspects you look for when buying from a sustainable fashion brand? I see a lot of big fast fashion brands getting into sustainable fashion but it seems like they are only greenwashing (ex. H&M)
I am from India, where fast fashion is huge, and sustainable fashion knowledge is almost non-existent in the general public, and the options are limited. I decided to start my own venture in sustainability.
I want to know more about what characteristics do people expect from reputable ethical and sustainable fashion brands, including (but not limited to) inclusivity when it comes to sizes, diversity when it comes to types and designs of clothing, etc.
I am looking into buying bulk scraps and turning them into some clothes I would enjoy wearing and make them ready-to-wear (small production line), done locally by buying scraps from local vendors and hiring local tailors to produce the end product.
I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on greenwashing, true sustainability, the business of sustainable fashion, pricing, etc.

Looking for a sustainable seamstress!
Hi all!
I've been buying secondhand for a while and I would like to take it to the next level. Sometimes, it is frustrating to find a trendy piece that is made sustainably.
That is why I'm seeking an experienced seamstress who knows how to find sustainable fabric and materials.
I'm hoping this person could design clothes with me (remotely is cool, too) and maybe eventually we can set up an online shop/site (I'm a content creator)
This is not immediate because I am quite busy currently, but I would love to be in contact with somebody who would want to do these things with me in the near future as a side project.
Of course, I will be paying for your time and materials.
Peace, love, and blessings,
CB

Any Recommendations on Sustainable/Ethical Shoes that a comfortable?
I'm pregnant and I'm looking to purchase some new shoes for the winter. I live in Florida so weather isn't a huge issue. My day to day shoes are white air force 1s which I want to keep or potentially sell/rehome, but in the meantime I can't keep wearing them everyday. They are so uncomfortable and they kind of screw up my feet.
I've looked at secondhand reeboks, but I'd much rather buy a smaller sustainable brand so when people ask I can say "their sustainable and such an easy swap". But I have some caveats, I'd prefer white or a lighter color, they need to lace up but still could be slipped on if necessary, and most of all they have to be comfortable.
I was considering allbirds but I'm unsure due to their sizing. I'm an 8.5 narrow and they only come in whole sizes. I'd be fine with an 8, but my feet swelled up pretty bad with my last pregnancy so I'm a little worried.
i really want to pick a shoe that will last me a long time and don't want to have to return and try a bunch of different brands.
Any recommendations?

Are Fast Fashion Brands Actually Worse, Or Are They Just Cheaper Than High End Stores? See Text for Info
Okay so this has been crossing my mind. Obviously fast fashion companies suck. And we have a list in this sub of sustainable brands. However! I was wondering this: take a place like Macy’s or Nordstrom. Are those stores actually less damaging to the environment / the workers who make the clothes than fast fashion (like missguided or f21), or are they just marking up their products at a higher price point because they know they can sell them for that wider profit margin? In other words, aside from the fact that sometimes more expensive clothes from a place like Macy’s are maybe more durable, is there actually an ethical difference between shopping there and shopping on Romwe?

Looking for Sustainable/Fashion Instagram Micro Influencers
Hi,
I've recently launched a business (Date of Birth Inc.) with a former colleague that focuses on putting purpose over profit. We are committed to ONLY working with brands that are focused on at least 1 of our 3 principles: Sustainability, Inclusion and/or Local Community.
We are looking for Micro Influencers (10K-ish to 100K-ish followers with at least 2% engagement). We are bootstrapping this business so we can only pay in product or Gift Cards to spend on our site.
Take a look at our site when you have a moment at www.dobdrop.com. If our values align with yours, and you are interested we’d love to hear from you.
If you're interested, please email me at info@dobdrop.com, and send over your media package if you have one, if not just send over your instagram handle and if you have any engagement stats that would be helpful.
Thank you for your time.

Hello everyone. I am trying to start a sustainable fashion business. My first designs will be women button up shirts. I am looking for the best fabric for such clothes on Google but so far I haven't seen many sustainable collared/button up shirts. Most of them are produced with linen but the designs I am going for are very structured so it won't work. Do you guys know any particular fabrics I should be looking for? Thank you in advance!! πΈ

Is this subreddit also for anti capitalist fashion?
Basically I believe that a huge part in unsustainable fashion is the exploitation of humans for profit and I would really want to limit that as well and I gain information best by just immersing myself in a community. So are we intersectional here or are we unable to deduct that bad for the environment is due to capitalism?

New start!
Hey all!
I wanted to share my story with you. I have a brand called Vel-oh, which is two of us who design, and make everything from scratch. Over the years we have never thrown out cut-off of fabric, leather etc. Over the years we have had a number of brand collaborations, which we are happy to have had. Then the pandemic hit, and the business went to shit, who needs a bag, when you can't go out....
So we decided to pivet and focus on the cut-offs we have, we rebranded, set up a new website, and are about to go live. Our new focus is to collaborate with brands taking their offcuts and creating something beautiful. We have decied to only drop- 4 collections a year and each with a different brand, and totally limited edition (due to the number of fabric cut-offs). Our site also shows the amount of carbon footprint our site generates.
Im keen to understand if this type of business appeals to you, and also if I were to offer a buy now pay later is that a good thing- personally I don’t want to encourage overconsumption

Sustainable brands for college students into streetwear/athleisure
Hey guys, I've been trying to dress more sustainably and ethically but I really struggle finding actually stylish college wear clothes at a reasonable, mid-tier price point. I don't really want 'basics' but I also don't want to show up like a rich 1900's french runaway model, just some comfortable streetwear/athleisure clothes that are pretty stylish right now and don't cost a fortune. Do yall know of any brands out there like that? The closest brand I could find similar to that is Minga London.

Sustainable alternative style clothing brand
Hi everyone!
I got interested in sustainable fashion some years ago but I've always struggled to find clothes that suit my style, which is more alternative, punk-rock-ish.
After reading online about many people with the same problem I thought I could start my own project, an alternative style clothing brand heavily focused in sustainability, from materials to production, and with the goal of becoming carbon positive in the future getting involved in reforestation and other projects.
If anyone is interested in something like this, would you mind participating in a survey I created to gather people's interest in the project? https://form.jotform.com/211835947645365

The fashion industry needs a 180 degree change ASAP!!!
Yesterday I came across the most interesting article ( https://kinder.world/blogs/company/from-organic-hemp-to-recycled-nylon-to-pineapple-leather-the-fashion-industry-is-shaking-up-sustainable-materials-possibilities-23095 ) about sustainable fashion. It talked about revolutionary sources from where to create fabric from, one of them even being fishing nets. They also mentioned how this kinda-new company was aiming to create “leather” from pineapple leaves! It was just great. It makes me so glad that the industry is doing the necessary adjustments towards a greener future. If you are a sustainability junkie like myself, I invite you all to read it and tell me what you think of these innovative eco-friendly materials :)

Please help us with a student project regarding CO2 emission calculation within the fashion industry!
Good day everyone,
to introduce ourselves, we are a small student consulting team from 180 Degrees Consulting - the largest student consulting firm in the world for non-profit organizations.
We are currently conducting a survey for a German start-up which calculates CO2 emissions within the value chain of garments. In certain online stores it is possible to make small donations that are donated to a climate protection project of their choice.
We would like to find out, e.g. what consumers think about CO2 emission calculation and what kind of climate protection projects are particularly important to them.
We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to answer this survey. Climate change affects us all, and especially the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
