I quit my corporate job to start a community space to trade slow fashion items.

I’m excited to share a small invite-only platform my friend Tanya and I are building, in partnership with the @selltradeslowfashion Instagram community, to make it fun and easy to trade and connect with the slow fashion community in the US and Canada. We have 1,000+ of slow fashion items up for trade from brands including Ace & Jig, Elizabeth Suzann, Arq, State the Label, Tradlands, Girlfriend Collective, and more. If you would like to test out and check out our Trade Tuesday today, feel free to download “Isthmus” on iPhone and Android. You can use the sign up code “thoughtfulflamingo” or use this link: https://isthmustrade.com/i/thoughtfulflamingo

Thanks so much as it is a labor of love. Cheers to having more fun sharing slow fashion with friends rather than trying to keep up with fast fashion trends.

And apologies if this shouldn’t be posted here. ❤️

Old Clothes

What do you do with old clothes from non sustainable & non ethical brands from before you started your journey towards sustainable fashion? I don't want to get rid of them because that is just creating more waste but also don't want to "advertise" these unethical brands on my body?

Sustainable "made in China" or non-sustainable locally made?

I've recently purchased a jacket online, the company claims to be sustainable, produce small batches, empower women etc. Nowhere on the website did it state that the clothes where not locally made, and actually boasted about being a local company, without mentioning where the clothes are made. When I received the jacket and saw the label Made in P.R.C, I was actually so disappointed. (also I feel like people use that instead of Made in China as a way to hide the fact that it was made in China) Anyway... My other choice of similar jacket is a company that is based in my country, and the jackets get made here, but they do not claim to be sustainable. (only the more expensive jacket claims to be sustainable, but I'm looking in a similar price range). SO my question to you, do I return this Made in China jacket and lose the shipping fee that I had to pay to return it, so I can buy the garment made in my country (not sustainable necessarily), or do I keep it and live with the fact that it's made in China (Which I am strongly against, and admit that I should have emailed to check before committing to the purchase) ? I'm almost wanting to return it, lose the money for shipping and just not buy a jacket until next winter, I'm just so upset about it.

Also is this company greenwashing if they claim to be sustainable but ship jackets all the way from China, when there are many opportunities to employ local people in my country (we have a very high unemployment rate and many have the skills to make garments)??

Today begins implementation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act

Any company importing apparel or textiles into the U.S. from China should be aware that today begins the implementation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). The law targets goods produced in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (XUAR). This area has a history of dismal human rights, including forced labor, genocide and other crimes against humanity.

All apparel arriving from China will be under scrutiny from US Customs and Border Control. Importers must prove that the apparel being imported (including raw materials) did NOT derive from the Xinjiang region. The products may be held in Customs until proper documentation can be provided. What happens to the under paid workers when unethical businesses get shut down??

Probably sounds like a dumb question but is there any programs in place to find underpaid fast fashion workers new jobs?? People (like me) boycott places like forever21 or shein because of how shady they are with paying their workers a fair wage. But from my understanding a big number of those workers accept the horrible wage because it’s one of the only jobs available?? So let’s say SHEIN went out of business or started losing money (from this rate though I never see that happening smh), they’d have less money to pay workers and all in all have to start firing them… what happens with those workers??

Again I might just be missing a piece of the puzzle here sorry

I created a web extension that suggests sustainable product alternatives (not brands, but products!) which are legit and affordable

Hey, everyone!

When it comes to fashion, it can be quite challenging to consume consciously with all the greenwashing the brands do online. This extension addresses this problem by offering genuine sustainable clothing options.

It’s called Be Zen.

What sets it apart from other brand directories/resources:

  • Each suggestion has descriptive badges that explain why the product is genuine and what its core qualities are (the result of extensive research).
  • The recommendations are product level and not brand level. You can find alternatives for a specific product, which will save you time spent browsing the brands’ store.
  • We care about affordable sustainability and find you the best discount coupons on the internet.

It's extremely simple to use.

This is how the extension works.

After you add the extension to your browser and save your preferences, whenever you browse a product on Amazon, Best Buy, etc., it pops up with an ethical alternative.

We’re planning on including thrift products as well, hopefully soon in the future.

We're still at the BETA stage, we're working every day on the technical aspects to make the extension better. If the product suggestions aren't perfect yet, please bear with us!

Would love to have you guys try it and provide your thoughts and feedback. Here’s the link.

Thanks!

OGLmove - I'm not sure they know what "sustainability" means

There doesn't seem to be much talk about OGLmove online in sustainability communities so I wanted to share my experience. I was targeted by their ads claiming to be so "sustainable" and eco-friendly." I couldn't find too much diversity in reviews online but I took a chance and regret wasting my time.

The brand makes good, cute clothes. However, if you are looking for a sustainable clothing company OGL has greenwashing written all over it. I was duped and bought about $200 worth of stuff before seeing this video. I didn't do my due diligence and dig deeper into the materials the company claimed were "eco." I actually just went back to the website and it looks like OGL completely changed their page about their fabrics. Might be because of the video linked... Previously, they listed a lot of synthetic materials. Now, the descriptions of their fabrics are now even vaguer.

After seeing the sketchy responses in this thread from suspiciously new accounts raving about the company, I felt pretty validated in my choice to return everything. Their TrustPilot looks suspiciously new as well...

Returning was SUCH a hassle as well. I wasn't going to tell them "I'm returning because you're greenwashing" so I used the basic, it didn't fit/ not my style. They insisted on me keeping the clothes and sending me more. I told them I don't want the clothes and they kept insisting that I just donate the clothes. You'd think such an eco-conscious company would know donating clothes feeds into the mentality of fast fashion because people think they can just donate their clothes but the truth is it mostly ends up in landfills. I'm not sure if it's malicious greenwashing or if the company really has done no research on what is truly sustainable and good for the planet. (The dissolvable bags are cool but it comes off as gimmicky when you realize nothing else about them is really sustainable and eco-friendly. )

I had to insist 3 times that I wanted to return the clothes. I even paid $20 shipping myself because I was so done with it. It's a shame because if they were just a normal brand, I might actually consider them. But it looks like a lot of lies that made me return just off of principle.

Sustainable raincoat - a short rant

A little background: I currently live in the Netherlands, and I'm about to start a new job. To be more environmentally friendly, save on money, and avoid traffic jams, I have decided to commute the first part by train, and then by bike (~15min bike ride one way). For this, I need a good raincoat, since fall and winter can be quite rainy here and I don't want to show up to my job drenched. Ideally I want a nice trenchcoat style, just waterproof and with a hood.

The search for a raincoat started about a month ago, when I learned I got the job. I think that I bought a total of 6 second hand raincoats one after another, from different sources (thrift store, vintage store, vinted). Each time I tested one (by wearing them in the shower briefly), I noticed that they all had significant leakage. One (from vinted) even had quite big rips at the seems, even though it was from an expensive and good-quality brand originally.

Alas, after the 6th raincoat I decided to just buy new but from a sustainable brand, since I don't have that much time anymore and I already wasted around 50,- on the raincoats (don't always get the full amount back when returning). I think that I'll probably buy one from Tretorn, since they have a nice one on sale right now that is well within my budget, and I also still need to find some new shoes.

However, when I was looking for sustainable brands that sell raincoats, I found that so many brands a) call themselves "animal friendly" and then just make 100% plastic clothing (as if microplastics aren't a problem) ,and/or b) make raincoats that either aren't 100% waterproof or don't have a hood / don't go past your waist / are so baggy the tiniest bit of wind will basically blow them off of you.

Has anyone else had these, or similar troubles when shopping for rain / outdoor clothes? What did you do eventually to help it? Buy new? or is there some secondhand shopping trick I don't know yet?

what should i do with an unwanted item that could still be returnable?

hii everyone! i’m in the process of learning more about fashion sustainability (even though i do already have a lot of knowledge on it) and i recently caved and bought a few items at a fash fashion brand (pacsun). (i know it is wrong, i am still teaching myself not to buy from fast fashion brands). i’m going to make great use of the other two items i bought but one item i bought didn’t look very flattering on me. i thought about returning it but was afraid the item might just end up being thrown away since it was on sale. should i resell it online or is there another option that is better? in other words, what is the best method to getting rid of unwanted clothing without contributing to furthering the issues in the fast fashion industry?

Traceability

I saw another post mentioning traceability yesterday and it made me curious if there are any other fashion industry professionals on here searching for or already using a solution at their company. I work for a U.S. brand and we are in the process of reviewing a few platforms such as Retraced, Trustrace and SourceMap but it’s hard to tell who has the advantage. Understanding where our raw materials come from is a huge goal for us. Would love to hear what others are considering.

Whimsy + Row denim made "ethically" in China

https://whimsyandrow.com/blogs/journal/whimsy-does-denim

I am not opposed to clothes being made ethically in China. That said, I wanted to rant for a minute about Whimsy + Row's decision to "ethically" --their words-- make jeans in the same factory that's worked with Uniqlo and Levi's. In the cute Q&A session (see linked above) they brush over "fair wages and benefits for all the staff and workers" in about two sentences with no concrete elaboration or transparency about their conditions and pay while a quick google search will tell you "there is no evidence Uniqlo ensures payment of a living wage in its supply chain" and "almost none of Levi's supply chain is certified by labour standards which ensure worker health and safety, living wages or other labour rights". This reminds me of how Reformation started greenwashing and moving its supply chain out of the US to cut costs and become more of a fast fashion brand. As a longtime fan of W+R I kind of wanted a space to rant and see what others opinions are. I know sustainability and profits can be at odds sometimes, but it seems W+R have crossed a line out of the realm of "sustainable" manufacturing as they've grown this company, despite still claiming to be a sustainable brand.

Planning to build something that would create real difference to the planet and people. Would really appreciate some help.

I've been into clean living since the time it wasn't as cool as it is now. I’ve always felt closely attuned to the planet and the people living on it.

I worked in corporate for 8+ years, and amassed a variety of knowledge and experiences. But I felt like something was missing. I wasn't satisfied.

Whatever I was doing wasn't making a difference in anyone's lives. And the planet was (still is) steadily declining and corporations and government didn't give two shits. It really got to me at one point, and I felt like it was time to address this with a considerable measure.

I decided to quit my job and now, I'm on a journey to use all my knowledge and expertise to create something which will help make a genuine difference to the people and the planet.

I’m working on a project to create some sort of digital guide or practical tool. But I don’t want it to be another 'green initiative', purely aesthetic and not accessible. So, I’m on a mission to talk to as many people as I can, get to know their motivations, their thoughts and problems.

I felt like Reddit would be as good a place as any. There are some awesome communities here which genuinely care and I couldn't find a better place to talk to people, have some genuine insightful conversations.

If any of the above resonates with y'all it'd be a massive help if any of you would be ready to get down to chat with me.

Whatever way is convenient with y'all would be fine.

Please drop me an answer in the comments or schedule a google meet if you are comfortable. Also let me know if y’all want to know more.

Thanks in advance!

I just want to share my excitement at an upcoming sustainable purchase! I’m vibing with joy.

I’m buying a pair of dungarees and a dress from a very small creator on Instagram, and I’m so excited. She hand-makes, to measure, clothing for people, and what’s most exciting is that she uses thrifted fabric, mostly from sheet sets and duvet covers and similar. My dress is being made out of fabric from 1996, and the dungarees are being made from fabric from the late nineties as well. πŸ’•

The dress and dungarees are a lot of money for me to spend, but I know they’re things I’m going to reach for multiple times a week. They’re made out of licensed bedding that has some of my favourite fictional characters on it, ones who spark joy in me on a primal level just to look at them. I’m hyped that old bedding is being given new life and kept out of a landfill, I’m excited to directly support a garment worker instead of buying from a fast fashion conglomerate, and I’m excited to have a piece of clothing that I know I’ll feel very happy and comfortable in.

Do you think it's actually a good idea to start making your own clothes?

(20F) I recently managed to save up some money from my part-time job and I wanted to buy something that could help me be generally less wasteful. I was thinking of buying a sewing machine to ideally start making my own clothes, although I know that it will take me a lot of time to learn how to sew pieces of clothing that are actually good and wearable. I've always owned very few clothes anyway, so I wouldn't have to discard any of the clothes I currently wear just for the sake of making space for new ones, and the idea of creating good quality pieces that will last longer has been on my mind a lot lately.

I also am aware of the fact that this might not seem like a great issue compared to other posts on this subreddit, but I'd still like to know your opinions on this matter. Thanks in advance for reading this!

Why aren't we talking about modular fashion

I am a lover of fashion and clothes however, I am getting older now (22F) and I want them to be better quality and more sustainable but I still want a variety of styles and options.

I did my research and came across modularity but I found nothing in my style. I think modularity in fashion can really take off but everyone is talking about digital fashion/digital clothes right now which I don't understand why.

I personally think that modularity/modular clothes can really help solve the current fashion problems we are having by providing more variety to people whilst using less of the earth's resources/being sustainable.

So why do you guys think it's not taking off and what can be done to make more people interested in the concept?

This film is soo good! It's all about this designer who goes to farms to get alpaca and sheep fiber to felt into textiles to then make gowns and she makes natural dyes out of plants. Her name is Celeste Malvar-Stewart and it's really really cool to watch her make things. Loved watching this doc and just had to share https://youtu.be/u_cD9UD5UZo

Branding color palette

When you first notice a brand that is proposing to have a sustainable business model, do you expect for the colors to be more earthy tone? Like does it matter to you have the brand aesthetic utilizes browns, greens, whites or not really?

Sustainable Piercing Options

Hi! I got my belly button pierced and finally can change out the piercing. I can’t find anywhere that sells sustainable and ethical piercing options, though. Does anyone know where to look?
