RE/style on prime…. So disappointed 😔

Anyone watched RE/style on prime?

I hate to say it but I’m left super disappointed/deflated by the finale. It would’ve been more of the designers “collection” had they created more than just one new piece surely? The competition looks are based on a given testing brief and I feel the should have been at least 3 new looks for a cohesive design story. To actually show their personality and design style/ identity.

I loooove the concept, I as a creator avoid any waste in my projects. I even save all small off cuts to stuff memorial stuffed animals.

Maybe I’m fixed in what I associate with creating a collection and a true opportunity that could have been for the design contestant.

For context, I am actually a designer myself, I pattern cut, sew/manufacture and alter for all my bespoke clients. I’ve had sooo much fun creating high level costumes and then on the other side, bridal and gowns, which is a dream working with women and making them feel amazing about themselves! I have always been obsessed with waste within the industry and avoiding as much as possible, but I would have felt so much more joy if the fashion week show was actually a collection.

Natural clothing recommendations please

Im looking for advice for natural fiber clothing, 100 cotton ( organic preferred ) , linen, wool ( preferably brands that aren’t scratchy ) , any natural fiber clothing. I’m trying to figure out what to put on both my husband and I’s Christmas lists so suggestions for both of us would be appreciated! Links to items/ brands would also be helpful!

When things started to open back up, the sheer relief of it made it easy to ignore some but not all of the poor choices people made during isolation and afterward. Unexpected health issues provided time to ponder solutions and KOMpRAmizeD™ was born. The mission was simple. Offer street wear with a purpose. Let the designs speak for themselves and encourage consumers to show their values. If it took off even better, we built-in a mechanism to fund a charitable trust as well as select non-profits to help raise awareness further by dedicating products to help fund their causes long-term. Moreover, we offer product lines for pets as well. Can it be as simple as offering quality products at reasonable prices direct to consumers? Maybe, until the geriatric stooge™ launched the tariff wars. Prices continued to go up and once the tariffs were deemed illegal, nobody seems to be reverting their price lists. Certainly not our suppliers. So, how do you build momentum for an independent start-up that categorically refuses to give money to advertise with the big tech companies that sold out their country? We are still trying to figure that out. Slowly, for starters. We support the current blackout, but at the same time would encourage people to donate instead to the infinite number of rescue organizations that are struggling to care for an overwhelming number of abandoned pets. The goal is to be successful so we can do that on a scale not yet achieved before.

How ACTUALLY sustainable/ethical is the brand Tentree?

How sustainable/ethical is the brand Tentree actually? Are they greenwashed? I know they certified b-corp, but doing some research people seem to have issues with the recycled polyester they use in their activewear, and as a brand that has a decent amount of activewear sold, what would be an alternative to polyester to eliminate the shedding of microplastics? As well as an issue with being transparent with the dyes they use in their clothing, how can this be done better? Are they choosing to not be transparent due to the harm it might be doing? I am also curious if anyone reading has worked or knows someone who has worked for the brand Tentree and what their experience was like and how they treat their workers and ensure that everyone is getting a living wage. And on my last note, anyone who has bought from Tentree and what they think of their clothes, does it seem well made? How is the clothing's longevity? Any anecdotes or any information on the brand, thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

Why is plastic-free stretch fabric still so hard to make?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a project around *fully* plastic-free activewear (leggings, sports bras, cycling shorts — the usual suspects). The idea is to use only natural fibres + natural rubber and avoid anything synthetic: no polyester, no nylon, no elastane/spandex, and no bio-based synthetics either.

But as soon as you enter the world of “stretch,” the whole industry basically shrugs and says: “Yeah… good luck with that.”

Which makes me wonder: we can put people on the moon… but we still can’t make a natural version of Lycra? How is *that* the impossible part? 🌕😅

So I’d love to pick the hive mind’s brain:

- Why is it so difficult to create a *fully natural* elastic fibre suitable for high-performance activewear? Is it a pure materials-science limitation, or more of a funding / R&D priority problem?

- Are there any promising companies working on natural-rubber-based elastic yarns or other plastic-free stretch technologies? I’ve heard about a few players experimenting with natural rubber filaments, but info is super scattered.

- Has anyone tested these new natural or “natural-leaning” elastic yarns in real life? (Think: stretch/recovery after workouts, durability, washing, sweat, comfort, etc.)

- And if you work in textiles: what’s realistically holding back a natural alternative to elastane?

I’m not expecting miracles, but I want to understand the *real* bottlenecks before deciding whether to explore blended fabrics or keep pushing the 100% natural route.

Would love any insights, experiences, lab data, ranting, or even “don’t do it, save yourself” warnings.

Is Shop Tunnel Vision ethical/sustainable?

i’ve already posted this in the ethical fashion subreddit and didn’t get any answers and so maybe folks will have more info here.

i know they operate in a way where they pay all of their employees the same amount which is lovely and i’ve heard good things about them in that regard. but i’ve heard mixed results about their quality of clothing and their manufacturing process.

does anyone have additional information? on their website they state that their clothing is made sweatshop labor free. but it’s actually a bit difficult for me to find information on their actual supply chain, at least on their website.

not to mention they seem to sell a lot of heavily discounted items, which is always a bit of a red flag to me personally. and i can’t seem to find them on any of the usual ethics checker websites i use to cross reference what i find on my own.

i’m new to figuring out more ethical fashion so there might be something i’ve missed here!

Second hand vs made-in-your-country new

Which do you think is more sustainable and why?

I'm coming to the end of a year of not buying clothes (that was the intent: had to buy underwear, socks, bras, and a pair of shoes) and want to improve my wardrobe next year (also, my work wants us to wear a Christmas jumper during December and I dont own any, so im going to have to buy a secondhand one of those too).

My original intent had been to only buy second hand for the year, but now I'm wondering whether getting clothes made in my country (UK) would be more ethical due to supporting local businesses during a cost of living crisis.

I'm also thinking about materials. Second hand doesn't mean natural materials but does mean I'm keeping stuff out of landfill. Made in the UK for me typically means wool, linen, etc.

I know this may be a long shot but I’m having trouble finding car seat covers that aren’t made from synthetic materials. I don’t want faux leather or polyester/nylon/etc endocrine disrupting seat covers. Understand they need to stretch so it won’t be 100% but 80%, 70%, hey even 50%. I drive a 2017 Honda Accord. I went to India and was impressed with attitudes to fashion- here is what I learnt

I spent 3 weeks in Delhi on a work trip and spent most of my free time learning about fabrics (a few exhibitions), looking at shops ect. Here are a few things I took away that impressed me. Obviously caveated that this based on my experience and is limited.

1) people care so much more about fabric and craftsmanship. People were buying clothes based on the fabric, weave, hand craft technique and region it was made in. I contrast to where I live in the Uk and material seems to Come second to design. The pride in fabric was so inspiring to me! There were a few government exhibitions dedicated to regional fabric crafts.

2) everyone I met had a relationship with a tailor. It is very common to buy material and have what you want made. Nearly all saris come with unstiched blouses. This is much better for sustainability. It is also common to leave a few inches for outfits to be let out in future.

3) lots of Indian designers make clothes to order and allow you to customise to your measurements. This takes a bit longer but I was so pleasantly surprised! I would love for this to be more common at home. I had a gorgeous dress made from silk and it fits beautifully and is going to last me many years.

Obviously the most sustainable option is not to buy anything else but buying a few good quality items, making them last and really loving them is great to see.

I did notice that middle class Indians don’t seem to do much vintage/second hand shopping. I love Vinted and charity shops in the UK but Indian colleagues didn’t think they had anything similar.

Will an unlined wool coat keep me warm?

Hi all, I just bought an absolutely gorgeous wool coat. The fitting is perfect, it’s exactly what I was looking for. It’s made out of 90% wool and 10% cashmere. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t cheap at all. But this is my first winter coat, so I’m willing to pay a higher price to have a very high quality coat that will last me for life. There is one problem: the coat isn’t lined.

I’ve done some search and a coat being unlined isn’t necessarily a sign of low quality (on the contrary). In this case it seems the fabric is double faced, which makes it incredibly soft. I live in Germany, the average temperature for winter is 5C degrees (39F). Do you think an unlined wool coat will be warm enough for this temperature? Appreciate any input!

Sustainable winter dresses that don't look tradwifey?

Please help. Do they exist? I'm a stay at home mom with a lot of homestead type hobbies that loves feminine dresses (aka Doen). I need a dress or two this winter with room to grow because I'm pregnant. Everything looks so frumpy. Is it just because we cover more skin in winter? Am I doomed to stick with separates?

I tried the La Petite Alice Birdie dress with bishop sleeves and LORD it does not look cute like the model. Yes, I can layer under it easy, but that's because it's basically a baptism gown. I'm trying to sell it and use the money for something that will work, but I have no idea what to get. So many sustainable dresses give conservative vibes.

Anyway, any help is appreciated. Thrifting has been ruined in my area so that's off the table. Does my dress exist or should I just get a nose piercing and tattoos so anti vax Christian homeschool moms don't approach me at the library? 😂

Trying to find a brand I didn't bookmark

A couple years back I found a fashion brand I really loved, but couldn't afford their stuff at the time. Now I can, but can't find them. Maybe someone here can help me remember?

My worry is if they went out of business and I missed my chance.

This was an eco-friendly and/or sustainable brand, mostly doing tees, crewneck sweaters and hoodies. Black website. They had really gorgeous, typography and design heavy shirts, pretty sure screen printed themselves. Might have had some tie dye.

How do you deal with the overwhelm of trying to be sustainable and ethical?

Lately, I’ve been struggling with all of the “rules” around sustainable and ethical consumption. Every time I learn something new about fabrics, supply chains, overconsumption, or secondhand shopping, I feel like I need to change my whole lifestyle to match. It’s exhausting trying to keep up, and honestly, sometimes it feels like I’m drowning in information.

Free “garage sale” - is that something you’d go to?

Not sure if this is the right subreddit, but looking for some advice! I have a bunch of clothes that I’d like to donate, but I’ve struggled to find shelters in my area that would take them (they’re either not accepting lightly used items or have pretty strict guidelines on sizes), and I don’t love donating to goodwill/Salvation Army. I thought I could host a garage sale of sorts where everything is free and I could advertise on OfferUp/Facebook buy nothing groups/signs around the neighborhood. Is that something that you think people would be interested in or is it weird? I want people who need the items to feel like it’s a nice experience so I’d love to setup my driveway like a cute shop with items displayed on racks & have some snacks and things. Why we left fast fashion and started building a cooperative in North Africa.

A few years ago, my mom and I--seeing how “sustainability” was being turned into another buzzword often used to sell more products, not to challenge the system that made fashion exploitative in the first place--started what eventually became a small cooperative in Tunisia, where every artisan shares in profits and decisions. We work slowly, mostly with wool, cotton, and leather, all hand processed, plant-dyed, and handwoven by women and artisans who’ve inherited these crafts for generations.

We knew rejecting mass production wasn’t an easy choice because it means rejecting convenience, predictability, and scale. But it also meant rejecting the commodification of humanity when people are reduced from ensouled beings to producers and consumers, and when communities, crafts, and even nature are completely stripped of meaning.

I’ve been too often disappointed by a really narrow view of ethics in fashion. It is not just about fair wages and natural materials (though that matters deeply).

It’s also spiritual and political, recognizing the sacredness of labor, the dignity of those who create, and the interconnection between decolonial and environmental struggles worldwide.

We often joke that we’re “accidental entrepreneurs.” We were more interested in politics and activism than in start-up culture. But after watching traditional crafts fade, seeing local communities degraded, and women forced into exploitative factory work, we realized: if we don’t build an alternative, someone else will keep exploiting the system. So we built one slowly but intentionally.

We don’t always get it right. Working cooperatively requires a lot of patience, vulnerability, and unlearning habits from the global capitalist model. But it’s also been one of the most beautiful experiences we’ve ever had, to see artisans fully own their craft, to see work become a form of prayer, and to learn about all of the incredible secrets of the natural world from raw sheep’s wool to natural dyes.

I wanted to share our story here because this community has always been one of the few online spaces where real discussions about ethics in fashion still happen beyond marketing.

UK clothing brands doing sustainability with meaning (not just marketing)

In trying to build awareness for my brand, I've been digging into what 'sustainable clothing UK' really means, beyond the buzzwords and greenwashing. I think brands like Finisterre, Rapanui, Lucy & Yak and Pangaia are doing really well and I'd love to follow their lead.

I build my brand on the idea of 'progress over perfection' from a mindset/wellness perspective but I guess this also counts for sustainability - have any of us get it perfect yet? I doubt it.

For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

I’m from the fashion industry — and it kills me to see what we’re doing to the planet

Hey fellow fashion-industry folks (and anyone who cares about what we wear):
Lately I’ve been doing a lot of digging — and I’m really shaken by what I’m finding about our industry(which is currently the second most polluting industry in the world). Some quick facts that hit me:
• We’re responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions. 
• We use roughly 93 billion m³ of water per year, and about 20% of global wastewater comes from textile treatment.
• Synthetic fibres dominate (~60% of clothing) and many garments end up in landfill or incinerated; some fabrics take up to 200 years to biodegrade. 

As someone who loves designing and creating, it hurts to realize the cost of our creativity.
Now I find myself walking toward sustainability — questioning every process, every material.

Do any of you here in fashion feel this same conflict? How are you trying to shift your work (or even your mindset) toward sustainability? Let’s discuss real ways to make change — not just talk about it.
