After 45 years in the industry, I've realized: Sustainability starts with "Fiber Forensics," not just a green label.

Hello everyone,

I’ve spent nearly half a century in the fashion industry—from the factory floors to the executive offices. I’ve seen the shift from quality-focused garment construction to the "disposable" era of ultra-fast fashion.

In my experience, the biggest gap in the sustainability movement isn't just "buying less"—it's education. Most consumers can no longer tell the difference between a high-quality natural fiber and a petroleum-based blend designed to fall apart in three washes.

At my blog, The Fashion Clinic, I’m trying to bridge this gap through what I call "Fiber Forensics." We focus on teaching the next generation how to analyze construction, longevity, and the true cost of textiles.

I am currently looking for a few Guest Residents—students or advocates who want to build a professional portfolio by writing about these technical aspects of sustainability under my editorial mentorship.

I won't clutter this post with links to respect the sub rules, but I will put the submission guidelines in the first comment for those who want to build their portfolio with an industry veteran!

Discussion: Do you think the "average" consumer is even capable of identifying quality anymore, or has fast fashion completely re-wired our brains to accept low-grade textiles as the "norm"?
