Is it better to buy secondhand synthetics or new organics?

I need sweaters for the cold weather, as I've recently lost weight and the ones I have are now too big for me. Is it more sustainable to buy secondhand from Depop considering most listings are synthetic blends, or buy new and make sure everything is 100% cotton? I personally prefer wearing cotton and I know that synthetics release microplastics if not properly washed. Sustainable brands I've been browsing are Toad&Co and Mate the Label.

Suggestion required on making website for sustainable fabrics

Hello lovely people in this group. We weave fabrics on handlooms and autolooms using natural fibers such as silk, linen, cotton, wool etc. As of now we are catering to only fashion labels and agents in Western European and Canadian market.
Now we are planning to reach retail customers, boutique buyers and passionate sewing people.

Nontoxic clothing for cheer uniform

Hi! My daughter joined cheer this year. I’m looking at her uniform list, and feel really uncomfortable purchasing the poly/spandex bra and 100% poly turtleneck, knowing what all the plastics and toxic chemicals can do to her developing body. After a brief search online I decided to seek help.

Specifically, I’m looking for:

• high impact sport bra, all black;

• cropped long sleeve turtleneck, all black.

Ideally I’d like organic cotton options, but really any nontoxic product recommendations are welcome! My daughter is 5’4”, about 115lb, has short torso and muscular upper body due to gymnastics. Thanks in advance!

What slow fashion actually means? My Take

Been seeing "slow fashion" used a lot lately and honestly half the time it's just slapped on stuff that doesn't earn it, so figured I'd actually break down what it means.

Basically it's the opposite of fast fashion. Instead of pumping out cheap trendy stuff constantly, it's fewer pieces, made properly, meant to actually last years instead of a few washes. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen instead of synthetics, smaller supply chains where you can actually check if people are getting paid fairly, and no rush to chase whatever's trending this week. Some techniques like hand block printing or hand weaving just physically can't be rushed without ruining the whole point of doing it that way.

Less textile waste, less water pollution from dyeing, less pressure on resources. Smaller scale production means it's way harder to hide bad labor practices somewhere down the chain. And honestly the clothes just perform better too, fit right, don't fall apart after three washes, so cost per wear ends up lower even if the upfront price is higher.

There's this thing called the 3-3-3 rule, you pick 3 tops 3 bottoms 3 pairs of shoes and see how many outfits you can actually build out of just those nine. Good way to test if something's worth buying or if it'll just sit in a drawer. Also would love to know about brands from different countries who are into slow fashion.

Suspicious GOTS product from IKEA

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate your help on this.
I am usually buying GOTS certified products and so far I was able to track and confirm the certificates through official GOTS database.

However, recently I bought some products from IKEA, advertised and sold as GOTS products, but when I checked the number, it was not listed in official GOTS database.

What could be the reason for this? Could it be a greenwashing by IKEA?

If a brand says "organic clothing" but can't name a certification, that's worth noticing

Something I think gets glossed over in sustainable fashion discussions: "organic" on its own is basically a self-reported claim. Anyone can put it on a tag. GOTS certification is the thing that actually makes it checkable.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) doesn't just look at how the cotton was grown, it covers the whole chain: processing, dyeing, manufacturing, labeling. Every company touching the product at every stage has to be independently certified, and it has to be re-verified annually, not just earned once. There are two grades: "GOTS organic" needs 95%+ organic fiber, "GOTS made with organic" needs 70%+. Both restrict what chemicals can be used in dyeing and finishing.

Why this matters practically: organic farming can be completely undercut later in the process. You can start with organic cotton and still finish it with conventional, chemically heavy dyeing, nothing about "grown organically" guarantees anything about what happens next. GOTS is specifically built to close that gap.

The useful habit, if this stuff matters to you: when a brand says "organic," ask which certification backs it up. GOTS keeps a public database, so you can actually check whether a specific company is listed rather than taking the label at face value.

I am currently completing my Master’s dissertation at Cardiff University and am looking for participants to take part in my research.

My study explores whether digital storytelling can influence people’s perceptions of pre-loved bridalwear. If you are interested in sustainability, fashion or bridalwear, I would really value your perspective.

You will be asked to answer some initial questions, watch my Something Borrowed campaign videos and then complete a final set of questions.

"Organic," "natural," and "GOTS certified" on clothing labels are not the same thing, here's the actual difference

I keep seeing these terms used interchangeably on clothing tags and I think it's worth untangling, because they mean pretty different things.

Natural just means the fiber isn't synthetic — cotton, linen, wool, silk. That's it. A "100% natural fabric" t-shirt can still have been grown with a lot of pesticide and processed with harsh chemical dyes. Natural ≠ clean, ≠ low-impact, ≠ anything about how it was made.

Organic refers specifically to how the fiber was farmed — no synthetic pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers, no GMO seed. It's an agricultural claim about the farm, not a manufacturing claim about the finished product.

Certified organic (GOTS being the main one you'll see on actual garments) is the version that's independently verified rather than self-reported. GOTS covers the whole chain — farming through dyeing through final manufacturing — and requires at least 70% organic fiber for a "made with organic" label, or 95%+ for the "organic" label. It also restricts which chemicals can be used in processing and dyeing.

The reason this is worth knowing: a brand can technically call something "natural" and be telling the truth while giving you almost no information about how sustainably or safely it was actually made. If a brand says "organic" without naming a certifying body, that's a good moment to ask which standard they're using — a brand confident in the claim usually names it without hesitation.

Winter dresses, skirts?

I want to be able to dress more feminine in the winter but I also want natural fibers and to not look too much like a tradwife. I think dark academia would be more along the vibes I want? I’m a Portuguese girl with a very typical Portuguese/spanish style, that I have recently found out is boho chic. To me Zara is the perfect store in terms of style. I buy secondhand as much as possible, but I draw the line at underwear, socks, and shoes. I belive shrinking my footprint, no matter how futile, is important, at least for my heart. I feel the same way voting with my money. I might not be able to put Amazon out of business, but I can try.

So I need brands that suck less than others, i.e. not a major polluter, transparent supply chain, not a ton of human rights violations, not being boycott.

Boycotts I am participating in: Amazon, Walmart, Temu, Nike, Target, everything on the BDS Movement* (I need to review the list) and few fast food restaurants and

They also have to be affordable, because I'm a working class schmo and thrift was a value growing up. As such, sometimes more affordable is more money but longer lasting. My favorite brands for thrifting are work wear and outdoor brands.

This is the most asked question these days, Do you also ask this question- Plant-Based Leather Really Sustainable? Well I want to clarify Plantbased leather based on my work in this area for more than 3 years now. I beleive that consumers can safegurard them through misleading Green washing claims by asking right questions.

Anything which is not leather and have a slight composite of Plants are called Plantbased Leather however plant-based leather's sustainability ultimately depends on: How much Biobased the material is? and how much of it is actually present in the material, what other ingredients are used, How long the manufactured, how long the finished product to it at the end of its useful life.

In India, Plantbased leather is being made utilizing Agricultural waste and It gives waste a useful application, while waste otherwise may be burned, discarded or left with limited economic value.

but Agricultural waste does not Automatically means 100% Plant-base

A plant-based leather material is not necessarily made entirely from agricultural waste.

Most of the alternatives are composite materials. They may contain plant fibres or agricultural residues along with binders, coating, adhesives, fillers, pigments and other components required to give the material flexibility, water resistance and a consistent finish.

This is why simple calling something "Plant based Leather" and considering it sustainable is not actually good sustainable choice, You need to know what is inside the material.

What type of binder holds the fibres together? What type of coating is used? What adhesive joins the layers? Is the adhesive solvent based or Water based?

These questions matter because the sustainability of a composite material depends on its complete composition, not just its headline ingredients. Thus next time we shoulld be asking deep questions regarding materials being marked as sustainable.

Good alternatives to leather

I'm not trying to start an argument about this topic. I know there are people with strong opinions about this, and I respect that. I just want to get more educated about it, and this seems like the best place for that.

For a long time now, I've heard that faux leather is worse for the environment than real leather products. Because it's basically plastic. I also heard that leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, so it's not like the animal is being raised for that purpose. HOWEVER, I clearly understand that there's still an animal that suffered and died, and at the end of the day, we're wearing somebody's skin. If we really think about it.

At this point, I'm just trying to make the best decision. I don't mind buying a cheaper faux leather option (compared to real leather). I have some shoes that lasted me for a long, long time. I just don't know at this point what the best environmental choice is.

Is buying secondhand real leather a good option? Since we're not directly contributing to the demand?

ps: I am not vegan, that's why this is still a question for me. Once again, I'm trying to learn <3
