I’m currently studying Environmental Studies and am in process of researching the challenges that brands face when incorporating sustainable practices into their business models. I'm particularly interested in understanding the specific issues companies encounter—whether it's related to sourcing sustainable materials, adapting production processes, meeting regulatory requirements, or aligning with evolving consumer expectations.

Additionally, I'm exploring the key moments when brands realize they need expert assistance and in which areas this expertise is most crucial.

If your company is working towards sustainability, I would love to hear about your experiences. What were some of the biggest hurdles you encountered? At what point did you decide to seek out expert consultation, and in which aspects did you find this guidance most valuable? Your insights would be incredibly helpful for my research. Thinking of turning my travel coin collection into something. Any ideas?

I’ve been collecting coins (basically just spare change I don’t use) from all of my travels. I have quite a few duplicates and thought I’d make something out of them!

At first I thought of maybe a charm bracelet but I wonder if that might be too heavy on the wrist. Then I thought of maybe putting them into little pockets in a sourced plastic, see-through material (maybe a recycled shower curtain) to make a bag, wallet, or purse out of.

Any other ideas?

Where to send old jewelry

Hello! I have been trying to clean up my space for some time now and I do not like throwing things away. I always try to find places where I can donate clothes or recycle old clothes if I think no place will take them as a donation. But the big thing that has me stuck right now is getting rid of my old jewelry. It’s not all in the best condition, and most of it I don’t wear anymore. Does anyone know a place that will take old costume jewelry to be recycled or repurposed? Kinda like how madewell recycles their denim.

Is online thrift marketplaces better than stores?

I’ve been buying second hand goods for a while now. From furniture to clothes, and it’s been really great, tbh!

Lately, I’ve been on a hunt to find second hand items that were produced ethically and sustainably in the first place.

It’s all about creating demand from the bottom up, and I really believe in my individual effort to do that.

How about you guys? Do you think brick-and-mortar stores are better than online marketplaces for secondhand goods or the other way? And I wonder always when shopping online, how do you ensure you’re getting quality items that align with your sustainable values, if you have any?

Personally, online thrifting has always been a big gamble for me. While I’ve found some amazing deals, I’ve also encountered items that weren’t as described.

What game plan do you use to find quality items online? any negative experiences with online secondhand shopping?
If you know of any reliable sources for secondhand items from ethical and sustainable brands, please suggest.

Eco-friendly pouches / small bags?

I'm developing a product with a central value on ecological impact - not just "sustainable", but actually supporting ecological restoration, as a central value integral to the product itself.

The sticking point for me is the bag that holds it. It needs to be about 4" by 3" (approximately), preferably a drawstring bag or other easy access non-zip non-button bag. It should feel high-quality but also be durable.

And, importantly, I need to be able to buy them wholesale with custom logo printing for, say, less than $5 each at large scale.

Organic cotton is widely available but not inspiring to me from an ecological angle. But I haven't found any organic hemp or organic linen or organic bamboo linen or tencel, etc, that is being used to make small bags.

I did find some nice loosely woven sisal bags sold as soap bags, but they're too loose to take a logo. Cork would be ideal for me but I haven't found the right fit.

Anyone have any insights or suggestions, about materials and/or where I might find a supplier?
