From my own studies, I've inquired that there are three tiers of sustainability: economy, ethics, and environment. Because of this, different organizations are able define it differently according to their interests—the extremes being strong anthropocentrism or strong ecocentrism. This is why we, as consumers, feel the need to research how a brand is sustainable, and also it may be the reason as to why effective policies cannot be put into place.
