Your skin isn't failing you, it's just over communicating

I’ve been thinking a lot about the mental toll of living with dermatitis. It’s so easy to feel frustrated or even angry with our bodies when they flare up, but I’ve been trying a new mindset lately that has really helped my patience.

Instead of seeing my skin as a broken shell, I’m trying to see it as a sensitive alarm system.

My skin isn't failing me; it’s just over communicating. It’s hyper aware of the environment, trying to protect me from things it perceives as threats even if that threat is just a slightly scratchy seam or a change in humidity.

Viewing a flare up as an over-protective friend rather than an enemy helps take the edge off the frustration. When my skin starts to scream, I try to respond with Okay, I hear you, let’s go find something softer, instead of Why are you doing this again?

If you're in the middle of a flare right now, be kind to yourself. Your body is trying its best to look out for you, even if its delivery is a bit... intense.
