Conventional thinking would drive us towards thinking that cheaper and trendy, the better, when it comes to choosing our clothing. But do we look into how the clothes are made, under what circumstances, the makers' livelihoods, and the supply chain?
There have been tons of complaints about South East Asian countries' people being exploited for making cheap clothes. Those clothes address the trends, but they also affect the livelihoods of people who take the time to make the clothes in a traditional way, and not using automation and machines.
India have always led the world with its Charka movement on making handmade fabrics. Mahatma Gandhi led the hand loom movement which not only ensured that the livelihoods of the many families involved in the supply chain are protected, but also that the environment is protected and sustainability ensured.
Today, more than ever, the concept of hand loom sounds important, in the age of climate change, energy conservation, and sustaining livelihoods.
