Recommend me some good wool sweaters made to last a lifetime

My partner spends a lot of time outdoors in Minneapolis and we are trying to buy fewer higher quality pieces for sustainability reasons. He needs one reliable half zip sweater that can be worn under jackets for long days but still looks decent for casual office time. Everything we have tried in the one hundred twenty to one hundred seventy dollar range stretches at the elbows or pills after one season. We want something comfortable for all day wear that will actually last four or five years of real use. Has anyone found wool sweaters with strong zippers and classic construction that have held up long term?

Comms person trying to learn fashion sustainability properly: where do I start?

Hi! I work in PR and trying to move toward sustainability comms in fashion and circular economy. I have some skin in the game — I write a resale fashion newsletter — but my formal sustainability knowledge is just good intentions at this point.

I want to fix that, I want to learn! I asked you recently about reports and you've been very helpful - I am caefully examining all of them.

But I want to understand more:

  • The EU Green Claims Directive and what's actually happening with it
  • ESRS, Digital Product Passports, and whatever else is coming that brands are panicking about
  • The difference between real circularity and very expensive greenwashing
  • Enough to be the comms person who actually understands what they're communicating (I am told it's rare)

After all this learning, I'd like to be able to hold a conversation with a sustainability team without googling words under the table.

So: podcasts? Newsletters? A course that's worth something vs one that just gives you a badge for your LinkedIn? European communities? Any humans in this space willing to point a well-meaning comms person in the right direction?I

I would really appreciaite any recs! Even the "okay but first you need to understand that..." ones.

What do you look for when buying a linen dress for summer?

I’ve noticed linen is really popular in warmer countries, so I wanted to ask — when you’re buying a linen dress, what matters most to you?

Fit, fabric quality, color, or something else?
Also, is there anything you feel is hard to find?

Your take on influencers and online medias role on (un)sustainable consumption

A week ago I posted a discussion here about the tension between being aware of fast fashion's issues and still finding yourself buying it anyway and the responses were really thoughtful and got me thinking further.

One thing that kept coming up was the role of online spaces in shaping how people think and feel about their consumption. Which led me to a slightly different but related question.

The sustainable fashion conversation online has exploded over the past few years. Influencers promoting conscious consumption, Reddit threads calling out fast fashion hauls, TikTok videos exposing supply chains. It's everywhere.

On one hand that seems like a positive shift: more awareness, more pressure on brands, more people thinking critically about what they buy. But I also wonder sometimes whether online discourse around fashion consumption creates more guilt and shame than it does actual behaviour change. And whether influencers promoting "ethical" alternatives are genuinely driving change or just riding a new aesthetic to consume.

But there's also the opposite side: social media and influencer culture arguably drives overconsumption just as much as it criticises it, I'd argue. Haul culture, constant trend cycles, the pressure to always have something new and stay aesthetically up to date. A lot of that is fuelled by the same online spaces that also preach sustainability. It sometimes feels like the internet is simultaneously telling you to buy more and feel guilty for buying too much.

What's your experience with this? Do you see that one side overweighs the other or do you disagree with me completely?

Does anyone else only buy natural fibers? How do you find pieces

I’ve been trying to build a wardrobe exclusively around natural fibers — silk, linen, cashmere, cotton, wool — but the shopping process is so tedious. Every site makes you check each product individually to find the fabric content and shows too many polyester options.

Curious how others approach this. Do you stick to specific brands you trust? Have a system for finding pieces quickly?

The New Clothes Smell is a Chemical Warning Label

We have all been taught that the smell of a brand-new store or a freshly opened package is the smell of luxury. In reality, for those of us with reactive skin, that scent is a chemical warning label.

That crisp, factory-fresh aroma isn't the fabric; it’s usually a cocktail of dispersion dyes, urea-formaldehyde resins (to prevent wrinkles), and pthalates. If you can smell it, your skin is going to feel it.

The ScentTest Challenge

Before you even look at the price tag today, try the Scent Test:

The Sniff: If it smells like a swimming pool, a plastic factory, or heavy perfume, it’s loaded with finishing agents.

The Rub: Rub the fabric between your fingers. If it feels waxy or leaves a slight residue, it’s coated in sizing (starch and chemicals) to make it look stiff on the hanger.

The Air-Out: Even GOTS-certified organic clothes can pick up scents from the shipping warehouse.

Today’s Discussion:

What is the strongest chemical smell brand you’ve ever encountered? On the flip side, which brands arrive smelling like absolutely nothing (the ultimate goal)?

Drop your Scent-Test winners and losers below!

Please help me in my neverending search...

A truly *waterproof* rain jacket that is:

PFAS/PFC free

A loose, drapey oversized fit to accommodate layers underneath (think more raglan sleeves)

Mid length (hits at thigh/knee)

Stylish enough for walking around the city, and could even masquerade as a regular spring jacket even if it’s not pouringo (not just sporty hiking vibes)

- Easily available in the US (many great options in Europe - Norwegian Rain ($$$), BRGN, etc, but don’t want to deal with tariffs or lack of return-ability)

Help!?

Does anyone else feel like they have a full wardrobe but still wear the same outfits?

I keep thinking about how many clothes we actually already have in our wardrobes.

Sometimes I feel like the real problem isn’t that we need more clothes — we just don’t see new ways to combine what we already own.

I’ve been experimenting with different outfit combinations using pieces I already have, just to see how many looks are possible without buying anything new.

It actually made me realize how many outfits were already in my wardrobe.

I’m curious — do you mostly repeat the same outfits, or do you try to mix things differently?

The most sustainable wardrobe is the one you actually wear. I built a thing, would love feedback!

Hi r/SustainableFashion
We spend a lot of energy in this space debating what to buy, organic cotton vs recycled polyester, fast fashion vs secondhand, cost per wear vs ethical production. All valid. But there's a conversation we have less often:

What about the wardrobe we already have?

The environmental cost of a garment is mostly fixed at the point of production. The water, the CO₂, the labour, it's already spent. The only variable left in your hands is how many times you wear it (and how many fewer items you buy ofc!)

  • A cotton t-shirt needs 2,700 litres of water to produce. Its environmental break-even is 30 wears.
  • A pair of jeans costs 7,500 litres and 33kg of CO₂. Break-even: ~50 wears.
  • Doubling how often you wear any garment cuts its carbon footprint by 44%
  • The average piece is discarded after just 7 wears

Most of us already own more than we wear. We just can't see it clearly enough to act on it. Most of the people we know are far from those numbers, sadly.

I'm the builder of Vestiari. I'll be upfront: I'm looking for beta testers.
But I think this community will get what I built better than anyone else, so hear me out.

Vestiari is a digital wardrobe app built around one idea: the most sustainable wardrobe is the one you already own, once you truly understand it.

Here's what makes it different from any other wardrobe app:

  • 📊 Cost-per-wear tracking: see the real cost of every garment based on what you paid and how often you wear it
  • 👻 Ghost garment detection: surfaces pieces collecting dust whose environmental debt is still unpaid
  • ♻️ Sell, donate, or rewear prompts: Vestiari actively flags items that deserve a second life and ones you should be reaching for more.
  • 🌱 Sustainability Score: a single number that reflects how well you're using what you own. It improves every time you rewear a forgotten piece, hit a wear milestone, or rehome something rather than buy new.
  • 💧 Real impact metrics: actual water saved, CO₂ avoided, and waste prevented based on your specific wardrobe and wearing habits.
  • 🎯 30-Wears Challenge: Specially for those only starting, I plan to increase this for people more aware of this reality, track every garment's progress toward its environmental break-even point
  • 🗂️ Full wardrobe archive, photograph your clothes once, see everything visually so nothing gets forgotten or replaced unnecessarily
  • 🧳 Smart packing capsules, stop buying "trip clothes" by building travel wardrobes from what you already own

I want to be clear about what Vestiari is not: it's not a shopping app, it doesn't suggest what to buy, and it has no affiliate links or brand partnerships. The entire product is designed to reduce consumption, not enable it.

Completely free during beta. And for users who stick to it during the test, it will be free forever.

Here is more info https://vestiari.app/
👉 Quick walkthrough before signing up: vestiari.app/how-it-works

I'd particularly love testers from this community because you'll stress-test the sustainability concept harder than anyone. That feedback will directly shape the product.

Happy to answer anything,
Thank you for the space.

Data sources: Ellen MacArthur Foundation, WRAP, Livia Firth's #30Wears campaign

Please, if this is not allowed, just let me know. I do not aim to break rules; I just genuinely want to build something we could use and love.

How many times do you actually wear your most expensive outfit?

Does anyone else think it's mad that we buy expensive clothes, wear them once or twice, then they just sit there? I've been looking into the idea of people renting designer pieces to each other instead of buying new. Would you actually trust it though?

Your skin isn't failing you, it's just over communicating

I’ve been thinking a lot about the mental toll of living with dermatitis. It’s so easy to feel frustrated or even angry with our bodies when they flare up, but I’ve been trying a new mindset lately that has really helped my patience.

Instead of seeing my skin as a broken shell, I’m trying to see it as a sensitive alarm system.

My skin isn't failing me; it’s just over communicating. It’s hyper aware of the environment, trying to protect me from things it perceives as threats even if that threat is just a slightly scratchy seam or a change in humidity.

Viewing a flare up as an over-protective friend rather than an enemy helps take the edge off the frustration. When my skin starts to scream, I try to respond with Okay, I hear you, let’s go find something softer, instead of Why are you doing this again?

If you're in the middle of a flare right now, be kind to yourself. Your body is trying its best to look out for you, even if its delivery is a bit... intense.

Honest opinions on an idea that I have? (UK/Europe)

Hi everyone .. I’d love to get some honest opinions on an idea I’m working on.

A bit about me: I’m a strength and conditioning coach, and earlier this year I unfortunately lost one of my roles so I’ve been a little bit stuck in the mud.

Since then I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can put my energy into building something around topics I genuinely care about.. particularly health, sustainability, and encouraging people to live a bit more consciously.

I’m in the very early stages of building a platform called ZTOX Tribe, and the concept is basically about detoxing from toxic consumer culture, especially within things like fashion, beauty, and festival culture.

The idea came from noticing how a lot of current influencer trends aimed at young women are tied to fast fashion, cheap synthetic materials, questionable labour practices, and products full of harmful ingredients.

At the same time, the current sustainable and ethical alternatives that exist are often either really hard to find or extremely expensive.

What I’m trying to create is a curated directory of brands that meet certain standards around:

• ethical production

• sustainable or circular materials

• non-toxic ingredients/materials

• transparency

• affordability (this is a big one for me)

* Detox Events / Experiences

* Sustainable Hideaways

The goal isn’t to push people to buy more things though, but to help people make more conscious choices when they do buy and move away from mindless consumption.

The wider philosophy of ZTOX is also about reconnecting with creativity, individuality, and a more natural / authentic expression of femininity, rather than constantly chasing trends.

Eventually the site would include:

• a brand directory

• blog content about toxic consumer culture

• possibly a “ZTOX approved” rating system for brands

* Detox Events / Experiences Directory

One thing I’m thinking about early is how something like this could scale or make money without losing credibility or trust.

Some obvious options would be things like:

• affiliate links

• brand partnerships

• a course or community around conscious consumption

But I’m also very aware that once money enters the picture, people can start to question whether recommendations are actually genuine.. then again I would never share a brand that didn’t live up.

So I’d really value some outside perspectives:

• Would you trust a platform like this?

• What would make you skeptical about it?

• Is there a way to monetize something like this without it feeling like greenwashing or selling out?

• If you’ve seen platforms do this well (or badly), what made the difference?

I’m still very early in building this and genuinely want to design it in a way that doesn’t compromise the original mission.

Appreciate any thoughts, critiques, or advice.

🙏

Should I give up on sustainable fashion?

I researched brands, increased my budget, felt good about my values and actions for a while. But as I learned more about the topic, I found out many of them have the same issues they claim to be against, like poor labor conditions, they just cover it with better marketing.

Most certifications and institutions are confusing, funding sources are questionable. At this point it feels like I'm just paying extra to label myself a good person.

Does anyone have similar conclusions? Should I save myself some money and put them to other good causes? Or how do you cope with this?

How do you personally navigate the tension between ethical fashion ideals and everyday clothing choices?

I've been thinking a lot about the gap between wanting to consume fashion more ethically and the realities of everyday life.

For example, sometimes I try to buy second-hand or from more sustainable brands, but other times I still end up buying fast fashion because it's cheaper, easier, or I need something quickly. It can feel a bit contradictory, but I imagine many people experience something similar.

I'm curious how people here deal with that tension in practice.

Do you find ways to balance ethical concerns with things like price, availability, or convenience? Or did your habits change over time?

I'm really interested in hearing how others approach this in real life.

(Also: I'm a master's student researching fashion consumption and these kinds of experiences are exactly what my thesis focuses on. If anyone would be open to talking about their experiences in a short online interview, feel free to send me a DM, but no pressure at all. I'm mostly interested in the discussion here.)

When to pull the plug on old (acrylic) sweaters?

In recent years I've been transitioning to clothes made of natural materials, but many of the items I own are now 5+ years old, so I still have quite a lot of acrylic in my closet. In particular, I have a couple of acrylic sweaters that have been downgraded to "just at home"-wear for years at this point, and even though I WFH, I realised I never wore them once this autumn/winter.

Will they hunt my closet forever? I'm afraid they have way too much pilling to sell or even donate, not when thrift stores are overflowing with cheaply-made clothing, but I feel guilty at the thought of throwing them away. Any ideas for what I can do? I'm honestly at a loss.

I started a newsletter for natural fibre clothing finds

Hi guys! First time posting here. I wanted to share my free newsletter The Good Wardrobe with this community, a place devoted to natural-fibre clothing. I hunt through the tags so you don't have to! Each week, you receive a roundup of 100% natural (or nearly 100% natural) clothing finds straight to your inbox. Here's the latest post.

And no, they aren't frumpy clothes! I mostly source from some of my favourite mid-range brands such as COS, Sezane and Nobody's Child.

I started this newsletter because I was looking for something like this personally, and couldn't really find anything. I'm tired of seeing clothes I love at first glance, only to realise it's polyester. My recommendations are natural-fibre or nearly 100%. I usually don't go over 5% synthetic, although I mostly just stick to 100% natural.

If you're wondering what my background is, I'm a copywriter based in the UK who studied Textiles, Design, Art & Fashion at university. I’ve woven on a loom, knitted on a knitting machine, screen-printed on t-shirts and embroidered by hand. These days I’m at my laptop delving into brand stories, trends and the current fashion landscape. If you'd like to know a little more, I explain a bit more in the welcome email!

Just wanted to share and thank you so much to anyone who supports.

Is Nuuly somewhat or more sustainable or simply greenwashing?

I’ve been avoiding fast fashion for about a year now, but in all honestly I still feel the itch to online window shop when I’m tired and just want to scroll. (This stems from my issues with consumerism. I’ve gotten a lot better and resist the urge, I just hate that I even have the urge despite how much I’ve learned about the consequences on people and the planet)

I love free people/Anthropologie type styles but really try not to shop from them unless it’s bought 2nd hand like Depop. But it’s pretty obvious they’ve flooded Depop and are selling to wholesale vendors who will list so much of their product brand new with tags on 3rd party websites. It feels like even on Depop with certain sellers I’m still fueling these brands.

I like the concept of Nuuly but I’d like to know if people think it’s even worse greenwashing than Depop or eBay?

Looking for 100% natural fiber waffle thermals - help!

I am looking for some old school style women’s long johns in all natural fiber. Geez it’s hard! I would also like a waistband that doesn’t dig. What you got, Reddit?!?

Fast fashion alternatives?

I'm looking for brands that are affordable but NOT fast fashion. I love the styles of Hollister, aeropostale, American eagle, etc. but any variant to that is worse with their sustainability or not any better. Preferably a brand that uses good materials, good labor laws, and fits the trends. Just wondering if anyone knows any brands such as these because it seems everyone is just looking to make more money and doesn't care about the impact. Thank you!!!

Note: I'm not super into thrifting

Your closet shouldn’t make you feel frustrated

I’m building something for anyone who’s ever stood in front of their closet and felt… nothing.

Ever opened your wardrobe and felt like you have clothes but not an outfit?

I’m building a fashion platform designed to actually understand your vibe not just trends, not just algorithms pushing random pieces but something that feels personal.

If you’ve ever:

  • Bought clothes you never wore
  • Felt overwhelmed shopping online
  • Wanted your style to feel more “you”

I’d really value 2–3 minutes of your time to take this survey. You’d be helping shape something built for real people, not fashion elites.

How to produce an ethical, technical clothing garment

I am looking for suitable manufacturers who could assist with developing a high-quality, waterproof prototype garment. I’m keen to work with an experienced manufacturer who aligns with strong ethical and social responsibility standards. I live in New Zealand but am happy with international dealings as long as they can prove they are ethical.
