I'm working on a project that focuses on the durability of clothes that are bought online. I'd really appreciate anyone that could fill out my survey!

Eco-friendly mens leggings in the UK?

I'm looking to get some leggings for workout purposes. Having never bought leggings before, I've done a brief amount of research and it looks like TENCEL Lyocell is the type of material to look for when balancing functionality and sustainability, is that right?

I've struggled to find any in the UK in a men's fit, at least not at a reasonable price. Any ideas?

Bonus points for colourful options (I'd take rainbow over black any day), but ultimately functionality, fit, eco-friendliness and price are a lot of variables already, so I realise I can't be picky about style!

I'm thinking of making an online brand selling sustainable and eco-friendly trendy streetcar and clothes, but I can't find any manufacturer to do this. I tried looking at dropshipping and so far the best one I have found is printful. If anyone has any suggestions or advice on manufacturers or dropshippers, please tell me.

Indigo Dye: A Timeless Tradition

Indigo dye is a natural dye extracted from plants of the genus Indigofera. It has been used for thousands of years to color textiles, particularly denim jeans. The deep blue hue produced by indigo is highly durable and resistant to fading.

Here are some interesting facts about indigo dye:

  • Historical Significance: Indigo was prized in ancient civilizations like Egypt, India, and China. It was often associated with royalty and spiritual significance.
  • The Indigo Process: The dyeing process involves several steps, including fermentation and oxidation, to produce the characteristic blue color. This process can be time-consuming and labor-intensive.
  • Sustainable Fashion: Indigo dye can be a sustainable choice for fashion, as it is derived from natural sources. However, it's important to ensure that the indigo production process is environmentally friendly and ethical.
  • Modern Applications: Beyond denim jeans, indigo dye is used in a variety of textile products, such as scarves, shirts, and home decor items.

Would you like to know more about indigo dye, such as its history, the dyeing process, or its use in modern fashion?

Sustainable but also washable?

I've found plenty of cute sustainable companies with great earth friendly ratings. But they are not really sustainable if they will be destroyed the first time I accidently put them in the wash or dryer lol. Which.. will be... in the first month (yay ADHD)

What brands do you love that can stand up to a washing machine and dryer? Happy to spend more for durability.

Fast Fashion: Is It Really Worth the Trade-Off?

Lately, I’ve been feeling conflicted about fast fashion. On one hand, it’s super easy to get affordable, trendy clothes, but on the other, I can’t shake the feeling that we might be giving up a lot in the process—like quality, ethical production, and sustainability.

I’m curious, how do you all feel about this? Have any of you decided to cut back on fast fashion, or maybe found some alternatives that don’t make you feel so guilty about your shopping habits?

It’s hard to resist the allure of cheap, stylish clothes, but I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth it in the long run. Would love to hear your thoughts and what changes you’ve made, if any.

Tips Making Wardrobe More Sustainable?

With all the talk about sustainability lately, I’ve been trying to be more mindful about my clothing choices. I’m curious—how are you all approaching sustainable fashion? Are there any brands you love that prioritize ethical practices? Or do you have any DIY tips for upcycling old clothes?

I’m trying to build a wardrobe that’s more eco-friendly without sacrificing style, and I’d love to hear what’s working for you. How do you make sure your clothes are both sustainable and something you actually want to wear?

How can I recycle old clothing?

I have a bag of old clothes that are not usable anymore along with socks and underwear. Does anyone know if there is a good way to recycle these?

I know there are several take back programs and donation bins but I am weary of those (exports) and I also know that’s it’s suppose to be gently used clothing. I haven’t quite figured out the best solution on what to do with my “unusable” clothing items.

It seems like a good brand with ethical and sustainable practices but mine said it shipped two weeks ago (multiple weeks after ordering) and never came. Customer service has ignored me for weeks and they've deleted my comments off the Instagram. Just wanted to give people a heads-up. I know when you order sustainably things take time so I don't want anyone else waisting over a month waiting for a swimsuit that never comes and then having to order again and wait another month for a new sustainable company. how do you care for clothing items that have gone mouldy?

hello everyone, as the title might suggest, I'm having issues with an item that has gone mouldy and I need advice on how I can potentially salvage it

for context, I have a few items made of PU leather that I have had for about two years now, and since the start of this year, I started noticing signs of mould/mildew growing.

I sought advice online, and have given these items a vinegar wash, as well as an ozone wash at a laundromat service. I have also stopped using my humidifier, and have started using a dehumidifier to hopefully reduce humidity levels in my house.

honestly speaking I don't think those methods were effective at all, because I've started noticing more mould growing and it has absolutely devastated me because I truly don't wish to throw them away because I haven't had them for that long at all

any advice at all would be appreciated!

I want to limit my clothing to a staple few pieces that aren't going to fall apart after one wash but I'm struggling.

I'm looking for a sustainable brand that doesn't have spandex, and have colors and patterns that go beyond earth tone shapeless dystopian looking T-shirts and pants. That isn't $100 per item.

I don't do well at second hand stores because everything in my size is usually really dated stuff typically seen on someone much older...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't understand all the hate for people who resell clothing from thrift stores

Is this that unpopular?

Have you guys ever seen a goodwill bin outlet? I saw one while traveling and holy cow it's (really fun to shop in don't let me discourage you) terrifying. There is so much clothing. Everyone has their carts full of clothing, tens of people, many with multiple carts and it looks like they haven't taken a stitch.

The bins all still look as full as it seems they could possibly get. And every twenty-forty minutes they bring more clothing. Nice expensive clothing, cheap clothing, new clothing, vintage clothing, in every size and color.

And when they take the bins away they're still full of clothing! Sure some of it's a little gross but honestly 85% of it is not in the least.

Even regular thrift stores get so much clothing. But if it doesn't get bought it goes to the dump. And there are people who can't go to the thrift stores for whatever reason, time or disability. And so why is it wrong for people to sort the nice clothing out of these places and put it online to make it more accessible? I don't care if they make money doing that, specialized knowledge like how to identify and properly clean delicate garments does deserve pay.

I only shop second hand right now, and anecdotally I don't think they've made it harder for me to find stuff. At least definitely not compared to the annoying management at a lot of thrift stores.

Sustainable fashion brands in the UK

We only operate in the UK right now, so looking for either UK based or who have a distribution network here.

Sustainable for us (right now) is no virgin plastic and ethically made. But really keen to speak to any brands in particular using Bamboo, Tencel, Hemp and Linen in particular.

Can someone please explain to me how thrifting/buying second-hand is considered by some to be a privileged activity?

I made an unexpectedly controversial post where I asked why more people in  don't buy high-quality clothes used at thrift stores, on online thrift stores (Poshmark, eBay, Realreal, threadup, craiglist...etc) and I got (am still getting) a lot of hate for it. One of the most prevalent comments was that I was being judgmental and even "privileged" or even "classist" to have this opinion because apparently thrifting your clothes is a privileged activity?

As someone who grew up always wearing second-hand clothes (while my friends wore expensive brand-new clothes), I don't understand how thrifting/buying second-hand is "privileged"? Historically, buying second-hand has always been considered something that people with less privilege do. As I kid it sometimes bothered me that my parents rarely ever bought me new clothing, but now as an adult (and having access to awesome online thrift sites that make it extremely easy to buy amazing brands for 1/5 the original retail price) I enjoy it and see the wisdom in doing so.

Other people said it's a privileged take because it's hard to find items of unusual sizes. As someone who is an unusual (and often challenging to find) size, I've still managed to find almost everything I want for a great deal second-hand.

Some say it's a privileged activity because it's time-consuming. I recently just purchased a good quality $280 silk blouse in my size (which is an unusual size) from Eileen Fisher for $20 on Poshmark. It was not hard to find or purchase and it took me all of 5 minutes - probably even less time than it would take shopping retail online.

I do understand that not every country has access to great thrifting sites and that for those outside of the US, shipping prices (and distance/environmental impact) can make it unreasonable. So I'm mainly talking about thrifting for people who have easy access to it (in the US/Canada, for example).

I'm really not sure why I got so much hate or was called privileged/classist to engage in thrifting.

Great high-quality sustainable brands for a petite woman in 30's to wear professionally?

I usually buy my clothes pre-worn/loved from Postmark or eBay, and am looking for great high-quality (made to last a long time, ethically/environmentally conscious practices, natural materials like linen, silk, cotton, and wool is a plus) brands to try out.

I am 5'4", but I have a disproportionately short torso and normal-ish legs. Sometimes I wear regular bottoms, sometimes petite bottoms, depending on fit/style/brand. But I almost always need petite tops. What are some great brands that sell elegant, sophisticated, and sustainable clothes that are timeless, will last me many years, and can be worn in a professional environment? My work environment is mostly business casual, but occasionally business or business formal for certain events (meetings, conferences, etc).

The Dark Maiden Clothing: an Honest Review

This business is owned and operated solely by a single mother. Almost everything is made to order (MTO). So I get it. Sort of. Wait times are listed as 6-9 weeks. That’s typical for a small handmade business and that would be fine. I order most of my clothing MTO from small, female owned ethically sourced and sustainable fashion businesses so I’m used to waiting 4 weeks up to 12 weeks for an item (never once waited more than that and I’ve ordered multiple times from: Crossfox, SewMuchLove, Future Nomad, Rabbits Path, Spirit of Lunar, Run with the Tribe, Domunique, Ovate, and others). But I agreed to that 6-9 week time period BEFORE purchasing. In writing. That was 6 months ago. This was my second purchase. The first time took 12 weeks. I tried again because the clothes really are amazing. And I thought it was a one-off. This time I ordered a dress and subsequently watched the owner post for MONTHS their new collection release items, even one post that said “if you ordered before the announcement of the collection release, I will return to creating your item after the release is complete”, and received an email back saying ‘some people have to wait 6-9 months for Dark Maiden items to arrive’, then follow up emails saying the material I ordered wasn’t in stock, asking me for more money for a different material (this was 5 month after my order date, I caved and sent the $30, then was told ‘just enough material was found in the original color to make my dress and was refunded), then a final product was mailed not to the updated address I sent and which was confirmed, which was- albeit beautiful and quality, not the color i originally ordered. All in all I’m either personally despised by this maker though we’ve never met and my check-in emails consisted of address updates and a ‘do you have a timeline’ request a few months in, or this is how they operate their business. People should know before they order that nothing stated about production time is accurate, and collection releases will supersede your special order. You may or may not get exactly what you ordered, and you will probably not be treated like your requests for timeliness are valid. All in all I give 9 out of 10 for quality, 6 out of ten for timely responses to emails, and 1 out of ten for customer care/primacy.

Preloved fashion a future trend?

With a growing focus on sustainability, it's clear that consumers are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment and opting for preloved clothing.

Even outdoor giants like Vaude and Patagonia are leading the charge in the preloved market. But is this just a trend or a sustainable shift?

I would love to hear your thoughts :)

sustainable “going out” clothes

hi! i was wondering if anyone had any stores they like for sustainable “going out” clothes - like more fun tops and things like that for a night out. i feel like a lot of the sustainable brands i find tend to have good everyday basics but not really more exciting pieces (i guess to try and avoid microtrends). i’m looking to buy well made pieces with good materials that i can own for a while. I honestly have boughten a few things from Garage that I like a lot and they used to use a lot of cotton in their clothes, but i noticed recently that they started using more synthetic fibers which I’m trying to avoid (ik garage is more of a fast fashion brand but i hold onto the pieces for a long time) thanks!!

What is the best approach to sustainable fashion?

We all know that sustainable fashion is super nuanced and there is no 100% right or wrong approach. But I wanted to ask your thoughts on my approach to it. I was always super conscious about shopping, I was never a compulsive buyer and I always treated my wardrobe and clothes as some form of self expression and art, so I was trying to fill it with quality pieces that will serve me for years. However, I still buy sometimes some items from fast fashion. I do not buy from ultra fast fashion brands like SHEIN or even H&M, Bershka, Zara ecc, but I can sometimes buy some items from Mango, basic t-shirts from Uniqlo or something on Zalando if I see that the item I am buying is from quality materials, it’s made well and I know that it’s something I will wear for many years. I have a good eye for these things and there are many items in my wardrobe that I’ve been wearing for 10 years which are fast fashion. However I also thrift a lot, I buy second hand, I wear a lot of handmade and buy from small, ethical brands. My philosophy stays the same however - I never buy just to buy, I always choose only quality items, I never buy items I am not wearing after. If I see I am not wearing anymore something in my wardrobe and I know that I will not change my mind in a year - I sell it or swap with my friends. What do you think about my approach? Does it make sense to you? Or should I quit fast fashion for good?

Would You Wear Revamped Fast Fashion? Seeking Opinions on Repurposing Fast Fashion Brands into Custom Clothing

I’ve been toying with an idea and would love to hear your thoughts. What if we took old, worn-out pieces from past fashion brands and gave them a new life? Imagine repairing and transforming those fast fashion brands and turning them into something entirely custom and unique.

For example, turning a worn-out Patagonia jacket into a one-of-a-kind streetwear piece or revamping an old Zara denim jacket. The goal is to blend nostalgia with creativity, keeping the spirit of the original brand while making it fresh and wearable again.

Would this concept interest you? Do you think there’s a market for this kind of sustainable fashion? I’d love to hear your opinions, suggestions, or even stories about your favourite old clothing pieces you’d like to see revamped!

For Days alternatives for recycling non-usable clothing?

Hi all, did a search on the sub but didn’t find a good answer. Am in the USA.

I have previously used For Days for textile recycling - this is for clothing I can’t donate as it isn’t in good enough condition to be reworn (eg socks with big holes, very worn out trousers), and fabric scraps.

It used to be you paid for a bag to recycle stuff and got store credit, but the program has got worse (as has been discussed at length in this sub so I won’t go into detail again), plus I have not been happy with the quality of clothing I have bought from them anyway. So I am looking for alternatives.

I have found Terracycle but their boxes seem extortionate ($131+). Retold is $44 for 3 bags but I haven’t found much online as to if they’re legit, and I haven’t heard of any of the companies they do rewards with. I am happy to pay a bit to keep the stuff out of landfill if there is genuine value in them to recyclers, but having a whole bunch of store credit at For Days I don’t plan to use from money I’ve spent, I would rather not spend too much more to get rid of my old socks.

We don’t have local companies that take scraps. earth911 doesn’t have anything local, and the places which are less local are only for residents of that town/county. There are a few PlanetAid bins but again they’re focused around reusable clothing and not worn out scraps. Plus I don’t have a good opinion of them from the various scandals.

Any suggestions, or experiences with Retold, are welcome!

When you're on a longer trip what would make it easier for you to refresh your wardrobe while travelling without adding to waste?

I get that you can do laundry at Airbnb’s and hostels, but if you wanted to switch up your style, is that something you think about while travelling? Personally, I become more eco-conscious so wouldn't shop unnecessarily for clothes, and if I did, I'll spend in a local shop and make sure it would be worn like a scarf. Plus, its light and easy to carry!

But I’m curious—what would make it easier for you to refresh your wardrobe while travelling without adding to waste, like leaving them behind at your accommodation where they might end up in the trash?

Fashion x Mental Health

Hi! I’m Erin a fashion design college student currently working on my senior clothing collection. I'm sorry if this is an inappropriate post but I want people who take this survey to be genuine so I don't just want to post it on my social media!

First and foremost I have always put sustainability first in my designs - I believe it should not be the tag line at this point but should just be happening everywhere. So this collection isn't "about" sustainability but it is going to be as sustainable as possible.

I’m trying to create clothes specifically catered to people who struggle with their mental health, focusing on anxiety and depression. As someone who has faced a lot of my own mental health challenges, I know how hard these challenges can make your everyday more difficult. My goal is to design clothing that not only looks good but also incorporates elements/features to help ease the burden a little bit.

To make this collection effective and meaningful, I’m conducting a survey to gather insights from people who have firsthand experience with these challenges. Your feedback will help me understand what features and elements are most important to include, so I can create clothing that genuinely makes you feel better. This survey is completely anonymous, so please feel free to be as honest as you can.

please consider taking this survey - it won't take long and it is completely anonymous (you don't have to enter your email or anything) it could end up helping others if my idea is successful! Thank you in advance :)

oh and if anyone has any opinions on this feel free to message me!

Sustainable Fashion and the Olympics

The Paris Olympics is a global stage with immense influence. It's a platform to showcase not just athletic prowess but also innovation and sustainability.

While I'm excited to see the world's top athletes compete, I can't help but wonder why there isn't a bigger push for sustainable brands in the Olympics. Given the event's global reach, it's a missed opportunity to promote eco-friendly practices and inspire change.

How does second-hand clothing recycling fit into the circular economy?

The second-hand clothing trade is an important supply chain connecting developed and developing countries and a valuable clothing consumption alternative for people experiencing economic decline, poverty and low purchasing power. Customers in underdeveloped African countries can also have access to fashion products from global sources.

Citizens have access to job opportunities in trade, distribution, repairs, laundry services and upcycling. Africans are enriched with new skills and knowledge of the trade, which can help grow and strengthen small- to medium-sized enterprises. But is second-hand clothing recycling a reliable component of the circular economy? There are some serious environmental challenges because unsold and used garments end up polluting different areas.

If the clothing is not made of quality materials, they will not be re-purchased and instead a significant portion is thrown out as waste, clogging landfills, lakes, rivers, sewers, and oceans. Further, according to the Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) and the Boston Consulting Group's 2017 Pulse of the Fashion Industry (PFI) study, the global textiles and clothing industry consumed 79 billion cubic meters of water, produced 1.715 million tons of CO2 emissions, and 92 million tons of waste in 2015.

It was also predicted that by 2030, these figures will have increased by at least 50%.

In 2019, Kenya received 185,000 tons of second-hand clothing. Local sources say 30–40% of such clothing is of such poor quality that it can't be resold. This suggests that between 55,500 and 74,000 tons of it were textile waste. A study showed that when Ghanaian consumers are educated on the effects of second-hand clothing on the environment, their attitudes and consumption intentions could be reduced or decreased.

What are the solutions? What are new technologies and approaches for second-hand clothing waste? How can global fashion products become more sustainable?

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

Sustainable fashion is an oxymoron

I feel like "sustainable fashion" is an oxymoron and am wondering how many people here believe that the real solution is to just not buy clothes... I know that sometimes people need to genuinely buy things but in general I don't think we need any more clothes... We literally have enough clothing for the next 6 generations.

Is this too radical/unrealistic of a perspective?
