Carbon transparency is improving but how do we verify the data behind corporate climate claims?

It’s encouraging to see more companies making climate claims, but behind the scenes, you still run into big data integrity issues, especially with supplier-level emissions reporting.

I've seen everything from inflated reductions to carbon factors that haven’t been updated in years. The EU’s new Digital Product Passport rules (part of the ESPR) are trying to bring structure here, but adoption is slow.

From my experience working with fashion and textile supply chains, the top verification gaps include:

  • Lack of standardisation across supplier tiers
  • Over-reliance on secondary data
  • No systems for traceability or audit trails
  • Manual processes that increase human error

What would help build trust in supply chain carbon data? Do we need regulation, technology, or cultural pressure?
