The social and environmental injustice of fast fashion

The fast fashion industry is facing increasing global scrutiny over its role in the fast fashion movement that has caused significant social and environmental issues worldwide. To understand the severity, the fashion industry is now the second largest consumer of water, and female garment workers for brands including H&M, have reported exploitation and mistreatment.

Despite these widely publicised environmental and social impacts, the industry, and its issues continue to grow as the business model benefits both the retailer and the consumer. So, what are your thoughts on the fast fashion movement, who is responsible for its negative externalities, and can it be resolved?

The most sustainable fashion

Is not your startup.

It’s not making new clothing.

This sub is all about consumerist nonsense. That’s not sustainable. Reduce and reuse first. Quit buying more things. Quit creating new brands and startups. Where are all the repair posts? The cool thrift finds? The upcycling? All this sub is is posts about yet another brand that’s making new clothing. That’s the problem.

Tired of buying new sandals every spring and having to repair or throw them away by the end of summer. I would invest in a good versatile pair if I knew they will last! The ideal sandal would suit me for the beach, the workplace, out and about and not fall apart after a few months of wear. Any recommendations?

Sustainable Fabrics/Textiles

Sustainability is "trendy" now, and tons of textile producers, manufacturers, and brands have started bending the truth on how eco-friendly their product really is. This article is a closer look into which 'eco-friendly' textiles are truly sustainable and which are just part of the greenwashing trend.

Help with Boxer Briefs

If this post isn’t allowed, please advise and I’d be happy to remove it!

I am desperately looking for more ethical boxer briefs with the specific addition of an anatomical front pouch/pocket. Currently I use Stance Wholester briefs for context regarding the “pocket technology”.

Many other companies feature this as well, like Saxx or All Citizen, but I am working on moving over to ethical/sustainable clothing exclusively.

Does anyone know of ethical/sustainable boxer briefs that have the aforementioned pocket? Talked with a Patagonia rep and they don’t have the pocket I’m describing. Pact doesn’t appear to have the pocket either.

Any help is appreciated!

We're looking for feedback on a sustainable returns recommerce marketplace we are building.

To give context to the questions, the quick description is: Consumer "A" initiates a return, the item is instantly listed for sale on the marketplace, consumer "B" purchases the item at a discount, consumer A ships directly to consumer "B". This eliminates shipping back to the warehouse and the environmental impact this creates.

Survey is here

YouSwim fabric?

Interested in trying a YouSwim suit but hesitating at how finicky the fabric seems to be. Like, don't roll it up when wet but also don't wear clothes over it or it will pill? Realistically gonna have to do one or the other at some point. Can anyone speak to the practicality/longevity of these suits given all the care guidelines?

Me and my fiancé are getting married next year, I'm therefore looking for a weddingsuit. However, I want a suit that thread's lightly on this planet.

I've looked into 2nd hand, but can only find a handfull in my size, and almost all of them are just plain black or black with a stripe pattern or something. I want a green suit.

Therefore I'm looking into sustainable fiber for a custom made suit, but I can't seem to find anything on suits made from hemp. Any ideas on this? Have only asked one tailor on instagram but got no response so far.

If hemp is not a thing in suits, what's the best choice?

I created a "look up any company's suppliers" tool named ImportYeti. It's designed to increase visibility of the supply chain and business connections. A few people thought r/SustainableFashion might be interested.

You can find the tool here: ImportYeti.com

ImportYeti searches 90,000,000 public shipping records to increase transparency of the global supply chain. You answer questions like:

  • Who makes Fashion Nova Jeans and shorts? Answer: J&B Clothing
  • I'm trying to understand where LuluLemon's leggings come from? Answer: Their main supplier for leggings is Mas Active Trade from Sri Lanka
  • Who are the top companies & suppliers who import/export under HS Code 62.04.19 -- women suits and ensembles?

I'd love any and all feedback (love or hate)... no matter how brutal, small or crazy : ) I only want to create things that people really love. If you enjoyed this tool, have any ideas for how to improve it, or found a bug/usability issue, I want to hear from you. Please PM me or comment below anytime

Consumer Attitudes and Behaviour - Sustainable Fashion in the UK

Hi everyone!

I am a third year student in university, and for my final year project I am researching about the consumer attitude and behaviour gap regarding sustainable apparel.

Through extensive research, it came to my attention that younger generations have an increased positive attitude towards sustainability and environmentally conscious products, however their purchase behaviour does not reflect that. I am trying to figure out what factors may be having a negative influence on purchasing sustainable fashion (sustainable fashion brands, vintage, second-hand, etc.).

If you live or are from the UK and you're aged between 18 to 30, I would greatly appreciate if you could fill out my online survey linked below. All data is anonymous and will be deleted after the project is done.

Creating A Sustainable BoHo Capsule Wardrobe On ThredUp

This is my goal. I did away with my hoard of clothes, decluttered down to the bare minimum. And I'm loving it. But now I want to slowly build up an inventory of high quality, thrifted, sustainable fashion. I have a hippie chic fashion style. I plan on using ThredUp, and maybe Poshmark, Platos Closet, and REI resell.

Are there any other online thrift sites you recommend? Any suggestions on how to go about it, or what brands you would thrift for?

Sustainability is about more than the material composition; strictly secondhand should be top priority!

There are far too many textiles already made to be creating demand for new ones. Let’s do this!!!!! Stick to secondhand/upcycled/thrifted/vintage materials that are also biodegradable!! No “rEcYclEd PlaStIc boTtLe” shirts!!! That further spreads the cycle of plastic entering our ecosystem! Listen to your heart and that of the earth!

Urbankissed legit?

I was searching for an ethical online shop yesterday and came across ''Urbankissed', which claims to be sustainable and ethical. I've tried googling them to see if they're legit but haven't found much? It says on their website they have 4,6/5 stars on Trustpilot and '' Thousands of conscious babes cannot be wrong'' but they only have 37 reviews on there? They also seem to support PETA. Does anyone know if they're really as good as they claim? They seem like a big store and I find this all pretty suspicious.

The polyester problem

Hello everyone! I’m in and out of sustainable parts of the internet, so I’m not always the most looped in and I’m wondering if anyone has an answer on this. My question is, should we be even thrifting synthetic fibers? I do my best to buy natural fibers whenever I buy new and even when I buy used already. However, I have a couple of items that are worn out and ready to be tossed or upcycled etc. what I’m wondering is if these fabrics are not safe for the environment, whether as trash or microplastics in the water, are they safe for our bodies? And is it something we can even be worried about since it’s all in the water already? If I upcycle these into let’s say a quilt or a rug, is that even something that I should be doing?

As a bonus, what do y’all wear to workout in? That’s the one area I am finding a lot of difficulty in not using polyester.

Why is sustainable fashion considered durable?

Over the past year, I’ve been making a strong effort to make my wardrobe more sustainable. As such, I replaced a lot of my staples with sustainably made items. Even in the short timespan of a year, I’ve found that far more often than not, sustainable options are FAR less durable than their counterparts, sometimes very frustratingly so (see my recent post about Vejas sneakers).

If this is the case, why is sustainable fashion touted as being durable? So many resources would say things like “if you buy sustainable, it’ll be built well and will last longer” or other things to that effect. Obviously sustainable fashion is still a net good, but I can’t afford to replace things three times as often that are three times the price. I just feel like the notion that sustainable fashion is in any way comparatively durable is deceptive and should be curtailed.

I've had so many sustainable fails lately I'm so bummed

I got a new pair of shoes from a company last summer that no longer seems to exist. I'm so bummed 'cause I bought a pair of shoes with interchangeable heels that don't really fit. They're slingbacks that slide of with every step. I had them on the lowest heel option and figured a slightly higher heel would tighten the back enough for them to stay on but now I can't do that.

I spent quite a lot of money on them, thinking I'd have really versatile shoes that I can wear to work and to fancy event but I ended up with a brand thats bankrupt and I can't buy new parts...or even wear the one pair I have cause they're cut wrong and wont stay on my feet.

I also bought a dress during the pandemic that I was looking forward to wearing. When I finally got to do so I realised it flashes all my lady bits (wrap dress) cause the front is cut too high. Can't return it, can't imagine anyone else would want to wear it, confused about the cut since its so weird...bummed about having one dress less in my closet (and where am I supposed to put this one??). I was really counting on that one and I've left so many similar ones on the racks at charity shops thinking I have one at home.

Ruined my white sneakers. I'm basically down to my trusty winter boots and a pair of flip flops. Nothing in-between and I'll be doing a lot of walking this summer. I'm looking at some mules or sandals but after the first shoe-disaster I'm so vary about buying anything I'll probably end up walking barefoot all year round.

Sorry about the rant and interruption. Back to phd research and thinly veiled brand advertisements.

Edit: Now I'm ever more bummed. I have another dress that I got hemmed and fixed and the first two times I wore it the fabric turned out to be so low-quality it's ruined where my bag rubbed against it (both on the hip and on the shoulder). It's Zara so not unhear of but wow, this is a new low. It was the last items I bought from them two years ago and now I'll for sure never buy anything.

I created a web extension that suggests (legit & affordable) sustainable fashion alternatives at a click

Hey, everyone. Consuming consciously when it comes to fashion is quite challenging with the amount of greenwashing done by brands online. This extension solves that issue by providing sustainable clothing alternatives which are genuine.

It’s called Be Zen.

What sets it apart from other brand directories/resources:

  • Every product suggestion has descriptive badges which tell you about its core qualities and why it is genuine (result of in-depth research).
  • The recommendations are product level and not brand level. You can find alternatives for a single product, which will save you time spent browsing the brands’ store.
  • We care about affordable sustainability and find you the best discount coupons on the net.

https://reddit.com/link/vtmyw9/video/2cy7frczc6a91/player

It's extremely simple to use. You just add the extension to your browser and save your preferences and while you're browsing a product on Amazon, Best buy, etc, it’ll pop-up with a sustainable and ethical alternative for it.

We’re planning on including a detailed LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of the products we suggest and including thrift products as well, hopefully soon in the future.

Would love to have you guys try it and provide your thoughts and feedback. Here’s the link. Thankss!

P.S. We're still at the BETA stage, working every day on the technical aspects to make the extension better. If the product suggestions aren't perfect yet, please bear with us!

I just started working in a thrift store rant

I just started working in a thrift store and it has never made me hate capitalism and fast fashion more. I hate the idea of people buying new clothes and donating everything they own ever six months. I think we should hold onto clothes we own for longer even if we don’t like them. The stores are over flowing with women’s clothes and the only thing I would say to donate whenever is mens and kids clothes. Our store offers vouchers that people who need clothes can get when they are having a hard time financially. Most that come in are men or women with children. The mens section at thrift stores has for ever been so small compared to the woman so if your thinking of donating clothes that aren’t socks/underwear, winter wear, plus size, kids or mens and instead your H&M top that will falling apart soon just keep it and see if you’ll end up wearing it later. That’s better then a land fill.

I know that there’s a lot of underlying social and political issues that go along with all of this but it just makes me sad seeing that racks filled with clothes no one wants and the people that need to shop there can’t find what they need.

Looking for sustainable gender neutral fashion

Hello! I would like to start shopping sustainably, and I am looking to sort of get a new wardrobe before university starts. I've looked at some shops that my girlfriend recommended, but I have a lot of trouble finding masculine/gender neutral clothing. I am not interested in dresses. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for sustainable and gender neutral clothing brands? Or tips for finding them? Thanks so much :) !

Veja sneaker durability

I’ve had the Veja SDU sneakers for a few months now and I absolutely love them from both a style and comfort perspective. The problem is, they don’t seem to be very durable at all. The outside rear of the heel is already nearly completely worn through after only three months of regular (not super rough) usage. Does anyone else have this experience or is this just me? Super disappointed because I love everything else about the shoe.

I made a coat that used recycled canvas for decoration. asking for opinions.

I made a coat out of upcycled material, that made use of used canvas for decoration and pockets, It's a school project and I need opinions and advice, so give me your opinion and advice on this coat-thing I made.

(BTW the coat in question, is the light blue thing with colorful pockets and edges)
