real vs faux fur ~ the more sustainable option?

I am conflicted. Real fur is problematic for obvious reasons. But on the other side faux fur is worse for the environment (production and because it sheds literal plastic overt time). It does tend to "last" longer because tho - bc it's technically plastic. Please let me know what you think!

Unique fiber/techniques for textile traditions from communities around the world?

I’m a zookeeper working on a project about sustainable fashion/ textile production in general. I want to highlight how different cultures and communities around the world use the natural environment they live in to create their garments.

It might not be for everyday wear nowadays, but even if the techniques are still used for ceremonial items that would be nice. I just want to focus on techniques that haven’t been lost to time and could spark interest in getting more generations to learn them.

Unique weaving traditions and techniques, fibers from specific animals (even if wool or cotton has it been bred to be specific to that climate at least?). Specific dying techniques? I’m looking for items from as many parts of the world as possible.

Or… can anyone help provide me with resources or contacts that could help me? I’m in way over my head with this one haha.

Thanks all

Capsule wardrobes?

Capsules are all over sustainable fashion YouTube, and while it's inspiring it doesn't always seem feesible. I have a messy and sometimes germ filled job, so I have to wear a different top and bottom everyday. I would love to have 3-4 bottoms that I rotate every week, but that would mean I only have mess ready work pants and nothing nice, and that I'd have to do laundry in the middle of every week. Not always an option.

Are capsules really feasible for everyone? Has anyone with a situation like mine ever tried one?

I would like to get a pair or two of athletic shorts as I’ve grow out of my clothes. I confess I do like the look of lulu but I don’t buy from them anymore. Do any of you have any suggestions for places to look? I’ve never bought secondhand athletic clothes before and I’ll not sure I’d be comfortable with it (but my opinion could be swayed), it seems most of the stores I’ve been browsing only have leggings and sweats, or a longer length than my preference

thesis help

Dear all, currently i am writing the proposal for my undergraduate thesis. I am doing research on sustainable fashion. To be more specific, i want to find out how a deadstock disclosure by brands themselves would affect the attitude of consumers. (so consumers would get to know what brand do with clothes that is unsold etc.)This would be in the form of a law/regulation. It is just a potential solution to todays not so sustainable consumer behaviour. So my research wants to find out if such a disclosure would be a good idea. I want to investigate the attitude by conducting a survey among consumers thats divided into three dimensions (the three components that form an attitude. )

Since i want to measure the effect of something, i have to measure the attitude before and after such a deadstock disclosure. i want to do this by measuring their attitude by asking questions divided among the three dimensions. Then i want to implement some screenshots of fast fashion chain look a like websites, stating that they burn unsold clothing for example. (these will be fake websites, since the regulation is not in place yet). then i would like to ask attitude questions again.

I was hoping if any of you knew what this type of survey i am planning to conduct is called and if any of you have other tips on how to do this research that would be great. Thank you in advance!

Questions on Sustainable and Fast Fashion Clothing

My name is Cate,
I’m a high school student in Atlanta and an aspiring social entrepreneur. I am working on a project to create value for people who want to shop sustainably more often and stop shopping at fast-fashion sites. This is important to me because I love fashion and want people to be aware of the effects fast fashion has on the environment, and encourage people to shop sustainably. I’m looking to interview students who are interested in shopping sustainable and want to help the environment. If you are in this category I would love to interview you about your personal experience and insight on fast fashion and sustainable clothing.
Thank you for your time.

And what is the most important standard for you when buying sustainable clothes?

Where do you feel most frustration while searching and finding sustainable clothes?

Which information is most useful when finding ethical product that you want?

The top Google result for "Best Sustainable Brands" is basically greenwashing. Here's why.

If you search "best sustainable brands" on Google this is the top result: an article by thredUP.

Here are some of the brands they recommend:

  1. Alternative Apparel - debunked
  2. Everlane - debunked
  3. H&M - do I even need to elaborate? - debunked
  4. Allbirds - debunked (not transparent or ethical)
  5. DL1961 - a brand we failed but didn't publish the findings.

That's a lot of mistakes for the #1 article on Google.

Now let me be clear, I have nothing against thredUP. I shop second hand often and we recommend thredUP for second hand in multiple articles on Eco-Stylist. However, this article being #1 on Google is deeply concerning.

What do you all think about this?

I found this amazing Italian recycled wool supplier with no moqs!

As a conscious fashion consultant, one of the biggest issues I see for small brands is not being able to meet MOQs. Yea, all of these new textile technologies are cool. But, they are almost impossible for startups to use because of sky-high minimums.

So, I wanted to share this amazing Italian recycled wool supplier. To be clear I am not affiliated with them in any way, I just think they are doing amazing work. I am happy I found them for my clients and thought that they might be perfect for other fashion startups out there too.

IMO they are a triple threat, doing good for the planet, beautiful fabrics, and they have an entire warehouse of stock fabrics that are available for small startup brands to use!

[Feedback please] New App for second-hand clothing

Hello - we have been working on a second-hand app (Closit.app) for a while, which is focused on flash sales for second-hand sellers. i.e. We focus on helping sellers have a short sharp events for just 24 or 48 hours. Also, we focus on video content.

The idea came from hosting events in Barcelona, which were in person Closet Sales, where we would host an event for free, i.e. a mini-second hand clothing market. The app which is available on iOS and Android, is our attempt at creating an event like closet sales, but online. Thus a Closit Sale.

So for sellers, we want to make it fast to sell your items, instead of waiting forever on the existing online services.

For the buyer, it also means they can get good deals, as people want to sell everything quickly.

Full Transparency, we are early stage and we have many things to improve in the app.

What is the catch? Nothing, we don't charge for anything at this point and are simply focused on helping connect buyers and sellers in a new way. One day we hope to make this into a business, however, right now we just want to improve the app and provide value to people interested in second-hand fashion. We believe there must be better ways to connect people in second-hand fashion.

Here is a video we put together: https://www.closit.app/

We are open to feedback [even brutal feedback], as we are driven by bringing the community together.

Thank you for your time.

Broken zip repair help - Zip slider sizes

Hi all

  • currently have a broken zipper where i need to replace a number 7 zip slider, and was wondering if a number 5 zip slider (all I have) would work?

Are the teeth size the limiting factor for zipper sizes, or are all zipper sizes (3/5/7) interchangeable?

Thanks

Introducing IKONO®

Hi guys!

We have just launched a new unisex clothing brand called IKONO. Currently we use only 100% GOTS-certified Organic Cotton and Supima, both sourced from USA. The clothing production is based in Portugal, we do the design here in Finland. Go take a look and let us know what you think! www.ikono.fi

How do you feel about modular clothing?

I just launched a modular clothing system on Kickstarter that gives wearers the ability to convert a dress to matching set to jumpsuit and go from loose fitted to cinched at the waist. Sleeves are also removable in one of our tops to allow you to have 3 looks - sleeveless, short sleeved, or fancy.

While modularity is inherently sustainable, we still made sure we aren't using fabric with any plastic and choosing a factory with ethical practises.

Is this a concept that interests you? I would love you to check out the Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ellylla/the-all-in-1-clothing-system

Feedback and questions are welcome!
