Are all Inditex brands bad?

I was wondering if someone within the industry or with factual knowledge of this could tell me a little bit about it. I see on Zalando pieces of clothing from Stradivarius and Pull&Bear with a sustainability label on them in regards to the cotton they use, but I can't tell if that label is actually worth something or if it's complete bullshit like the Zara and H&M labels. Does Inditex use the same resources and factories for all their brands?

And I guess the same goes for H&M. What about ARKET, Monki and Weekday? Are they all bad?

Sustainable silk brands?

I was wondering if there are any good sustainable silk brands.

I want a silk cami for layering under blazers or cardigans. But it seems like my initial searches aren’t leading to anything truly sustainable.

Any ideas for a better source or fabric that would give me a similar look?

Thanks!

College pathway help please

Hello! I have recently really settled on what career I would like and then what I need to get there. I really would like to have a degree in sustainable fashion and work from the inside of the industry to make it less environmentally toxic. I'm currently working towards an associate's degree in sustainability and environmental science and plan to take classes to become certified in fashion as well, however I wanted to know what degrees specifically would be beneficial and classes/schools you recommend? I've tried googling and my advisor is no help at all. Please help and TYIA💞

Is your new clothing brand really ethical, or do you just believe it is?

Good day All! I am coming here today with what I've found to be a slightly sensitive topic that I am hoping we can discuss deeply and respectfully amongst one another.

--I see many fashion brands both large and small marketing their products as eco-conscious when they are anything but...I choose to believe (at least with small brands) this is not purposeful manipulation of customers, but has to do with people being uninformed about what they are choosing to sell... --

That said, I believe that if you are going to use resources to create more objects in the name of eco friendly business and try to sell them based on their eco friendliness, you have a responsibility of reviewing your own business practices to ensure that they truly are Eco Conscious. Your Impact starts at the base level and grows from there. If you start your business with unsustainable foundations, then what is the point? If your business cannot survive while also being sustainable, then it is not a viable "sustainable" business.

So how do I know if my business (or the business I'm thinking of supporting) is truly eco-conscious/ethical/sustainable? (I am using these terms slightly interchangeably, because they are inextricably related)

A few things to consider:::::

Is your 'eco conscious' 'sustainable' business contributing to environmental harm? Human rights violations? How deeply have you looked into where your products come from and how they are made? Do you know your supply chain from raw materials to finished product?

I know..it hurts to hear it! You may be feeling some resistance...but if you're willing to please hear me out...and understand that I am sharing information, you can do what you will with it. I am not personally attacking anyone or their brand, just fleshing out the idea and starting the conversation of what a truly Eco conscious brand looks like so that we can all be informed about the true impact of these businesses before supporting or creating them. I feel that if we were all more informed about what ethical/sustainable clothing *truly* looks like, we could use our purchase power and our brand decisions to create a more sustainable clothing market! To the future of truly ethical clothing! !

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you thinking of creating an eco friendly clothing brand? Most of the sustainable and ethical clothing brands I see advertised here are not truly sustainable. Before creating a business that is "eco-conscious" here are some questions to ask to determine if your brand is truly eco friendly. I am going to say only a little here, but I'd like you to use these questions as a jumping off point for the deep, deep research you (hopefully) do before creating your brand or supporting a brand. Note that it takes time, hours of research into fabrics, producers, methods, dyeing processes, etc in order to create a truly sustainable clothing business. If you are billing your business as ethical/sustainable/eco conscious, it is 100% your responsibility to do that research.

**--**Is my brand contributing to the already egregious environmental and human harm that is a part of the fashion industry?

**--**Am I using tree pulp, Bamboo or eucalyptus (rayon) fabric? Cotton? Are the fabrics I choose to sell actively harming the environment and the communities where the raw materials are grown? What does it take to make the raw material into usable fabric? Is it more important to sell products at a high profit or make my logo accessible to people with less money than it is to actually be an ethical business? (hint, if so, go about your creative business but don't bill yourself as ethical or sustainable, problem solved!)

--How are my garments being Dyed? How are the dyes disposed of? How water intensive is the process? Are the colors I choose to sell poisoning the bodies of the community making my clothing? Are they damaging ecosystems around where my clothing is created? What is the process and environmental impact of making a fabric bright white? Dark black?

--Am I shipping out garments that are made in other countries? Are they sourcing the raw materials for the fabric from far away, creating the fabric, shipping to the place creating my clothing, shipping it to me, and then I ship it to customers (That's a big footprint!)

--How much do I know about the people creating the clothing, their working conditions, their wages?

\Am I accidentally greenwashing?\**

Does my company claim to donate profits back to the environment while also actively selling products that are not truly sustainable or eco conscious? Am I actively harming the communities that are creating clothing for my brand while also claiming to "give back" to them or pay them fair wages? Is there anything problematic about paying someone a fair wage to damage their own community and poison their own water supply? What are some other options?

**--**Will consumers see my branding, website, and product, and then be convinced to make purchases that contribute to environmental degradation or human water rights violations... What are the ethics of this? Where is the line here? Am I selling non-eco conscious non-sustainable products in order to make a profit for myself and to donate to causes that champion eco consciousness? Is this ethical?

If your brand is truly about sustainability, then the products and methods you choose will be sustainable!

It seems so simple but I see this conflict all the time. Your brand must embody sustainability to be sustainable. It must embody ethical behavior to be ethical. If you can't source an eco friendly fabric t-shirt with your logo made ethically, and so you choose to sell shirts made of harmful fabrics then that is a problem with the efficacy of your business model and a signal that perhaps it's not actually eco friendly to sell t-shirts to people...and your business is based on "feeling good" that you or your customers made a difference instead of truly championing eco conscious and ethical behavior.

At the end of the day, if you are selling items made with non eco friendly fabrics, dyed with polluting poisonous dyes, your business is not ethical or eco friendly. Don't brand it as such, as this is misleading to your consumers (greenwashing) and can cause them to make purchases that do the exact opposite of what you are trying to do.

An eco ink logo and a donation to an eco charity does not make an eco friendly business. Your actual footprint and overall impact are what make you ethical and eco friendly or not. Thank you for listening <3

What if you could see the impact of your clothing as you're shopping? I'm building a tool to do this - and would love to talk to anyone interested in helping us

Hi everyone,

I'm the co-founder of Bendi (www.bendi.wtf) - we're developing a way to show you clear and comparable sustainability information as part of clothing product descriptions while you shop.

We are still trying to understand the needs people have and then build an MVP to test and validate our hypothesis.

We are looking to launch something in the baby and children's space and I wanted to ask the community if there are any parents/grandparents or loved ones of children who have bought clothes for their little ones and would be willing to speak to me for 15mins about that experience. Please message me if you are able to help or feel free to pick a time via calendly.

Really interesting ideas and posts on this subreddit - so please connect if you want to discuss what we're building more generally :)

User Testers needed

Hi,

Please let me know if i'm doing it wrong here, I just thought this would be a great place to start. I'm a fashion and business graduate trying to think of ways to make sustainable fashion the norm - I have started creating this app called withLana to encourage peer-to-peer lending within the younger age bracket at a lower cost. Apps out there already are aimed at the better off demographic and it fuels the idea that sustainability isn't affordable.

For further details check the link!

I am looking for testers to check out the prototype and give feedback about the concept and overall design of the app :)

Please comment or get in contact through the website if this is of interest to you! :)

THERE’S NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT 2020 Why I’m Releasing a Digital Comedy Show Rather Than Participating in Fashion Week. An Open Letter by Zero Waste Daniel:

THERE’S NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT 2020

Why I’m Releasing a Digital Comedy Show Rather Than Participating in Fashion Week.

An Open Letter by Zero Waste Daniel:

In mid-March, when New York’s non-essential business shutdown was first announced, I had already been on the hamster wheel of fashion for over a decade. Pandemic aside, a mandatory two week stop-down felt like a scary, but dare I say, welcomed change of pace.

Making and selling clothes out of upcycled fabric scraps in my Brooklyn storefront is a world away from holding down a corporate 9 to 5 job. It's more of an all-consuming obsession, that requires as many hours as it takes to get the job done everyday. So I thought that lowering the gate on my store for a few weeks, while I worked from home in an effort to ‘flatten the curve,’ would be completely manageable for me and my business.

For the first time since launching my brand, Zero Waste Daniel, I had some reserves to weather the storm. I finally had a direct to consumer business that was making consistent sales and getting some real buzz. I had just come off of my 4th, and largest, installment of my Fashion Week series, Sustainable Fashion is Hilarious, an unconventional fashion/comedy show, and my way of participating in Fashion Week, without participating in Fashion Week. This season’s theme was “The Death of Fashion.”

The show featured models clad head to toe in my newest offerings, scattered throughout Arcadia Earth, a 15-room climate change museum. It wasn’t a runway or a presentation. It was a staged protest against greed, and a mock funeral for what it once meant to be a great fashion designer. The models were more than living hangers, they were activists. They marched back and forth with signs demanding to know, “Who killed fashion?”  In one room, they showed you how to make an apocalypse survival kit; in another, two model’s led a seance to conjure old trends. There was a guest book where people could leave their sympathies next to an altar covered in photos of great designers and brands gone too soon. Everyone at the show was in the show. The Death of Fashion was a whole mood that night.

In the final room, before guests left, in lieu of the customary designer’s bow, I read a eulogy for a comically long list of trends no longer considered en vogue.

As people passed through the exit, without being prompted, they began paying their last respects. Some jokingly hugged me and offered condolences. Others did so seriously.

It was a show, an event, a collection, a party, a performance, and one of our last nights out in New York before COVID-19 hit our city. For me, it was also a catharsis. That night, I let go of my hopes and expectations of what my future in fashion might hold.

A few weeks later, I felt the first ripples of the pandemic. One day before the shutdown officially took effect, the owner of a sample room in Manhattan frantically called me. She told me that if I didn't come and pick up my unfinished goods within the hour, they would be padlocked inside the building indefinitely.

I picked up the unfinished order. The next morning I went into autopilot. I put on a mask, went into my  workshop, and began to finish the job one piece at a time. The bulk of my next 2 weeks were not spent working from home, but in my closed store in front of a sewing machine attaching 600 patches to sweatshirts, while my husband, Mario, clipped threads and packed orders.

While sewing those patches, I thought back to 2011. That year I was a new independent designer, who had just gotten my first large wholesale order.  I didn’t have the money to produce any goods up-front, nor was I doing the kind of volume that a factory would take on. Rather than cancel the order, I sat in my studio and sewed up 100 dresses myself. That time it was my mother who clipped the threads and packed the orders.

Now in 2020, as I attached the final patches to my project, in my shut down store, in the middle of a pandemic that had already affected so many, so deeply...I felt a familiar feeling.

It was the need to survive. When I shipped that order in 2011, I felt like I had walked through a gauntlet. 2020 is a more complicated world with higher stakes. This time, I knew I could ship the order, that was the easy part. Now, I had to focus on things even more important than what happens next with my brand. This is about actual survival.

So what if I would never be a designer who shows their collections at Bryant Park or Lincoln Center. I no longer cared that I would never sell to Barney’s. They are the victims of the times. My sights have moved on from those outdated symbols of success.

In 2020, survival is success. And with an industry in flux and an uptick in “no new clothes” pledges and sustainability challenges, how do I design for people who are not buying?

How do you feed people who are full?

You don't. You entertain them. It’s the classic “dinner and a movie.” People are stuffed to the gills with clothing, but they’re hungry for entertainment. “More content please!” From tik tok tutorials to reality tv, consumers want fashion all over their screens. The demands of design are evolving. This season’s push towards digital is the perfect time for me to get my show out of fashion week altogether and into a new format where it can reach more people, make more change, do more good, and create less waste.

The show is the product. This collection will be a hybrid series, a mix of clothing and content for sale.

Tickets for the first show will be released later this week, and the clothing in it will follow. It won’t be just for New Yorkers or fashion people, but for anyone, anywhere, who’s looking for a little entertainment and a laugh.  And if you do find yourself with a craving for clothing, I'm still here surviving and making sweatshirts and joggers out of scraps.

First Vetta Order

Ordered and really like my new dress from Vetta, but was totally bummed the shipment came in a plastic bag! Has anyone else ordered from them? I plan on sending them a message about improving shipping, but hope to order a piece again in the future and would love some input on what others have found flattering. Also, feel free to dash my hopes and dreams if they are not as sustainable and ethical as they seem.

Help finding sustainable mock necks

Pretty much just what the title says haha. I’ve been looking for a mock neck shirt or light sweater for layering but I’m having trouble finding some. They’re all either super high turtlenecks or thick sweaters. Does anyone have any idea what brand might have them or have any to recommend?

Anyone have experience with Adelante Shoe Co?

I don't see this brand when searching on the "Good on You" site but they appear to be a sustainable brand and have been mentioned here once before.

I'm curious if anyone has tried their products and could give a brief review? I think I first found the brand on r/goodyearwelt but a few people had some complaints on the leather quality. I haven't been able to find many close up photos that aren't from the brand themselves. TIA!

A day in the life- sustainable fashion for all

Hello everyone! For my entrepreneurial class we had to create an idea for a start up business and our topic is an eco friendly, sustainable fashion brand at a low cost! The clothing will be all inclusive, so everyone can enjoy sustainable fashion at a low price. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, would you mind replying with a name (does not have to be real) and 16 random numbers? It would be a huge help and we need to collect a total of 500 “credit card” numbers in order to get to the next step! Thank you in advance!

Starting off—-longish post

Hi Everyone,

Naturally sustainability is on everyone’s radar and until this evening (after watching a documentary) I was so oblivious to how fast fashion over consumption of clothes deeply impacted the environment. I will be honest I am guilty of fast fashion and always looking for next stylish outfit and never feeling like I have enough clothes and always buying more almost every week, holidays is especially bad, I will buy things for a holiday then, whilst I’m on holiday I’ll buy more as I feel I didn’t quite have the stuff I need! Terrible I know. A lot of this will come from self esteem issues and I never really feel confident in what I’m wearing, now recently I find myself cycling through the same 5 dresses. It’s true what they say, you wear 20 percent of your wardrobe 80 percent of the time. Here’s my challenge, I want to do my bit to help out, I want to reduce my carbon footprint have a detox and not purchase new fast fashion clothes. I’ve read about capsule wardrobes and swapping and up cycling and only having bare essentials. Any advice how to start, what do I need that’s essential, how to stop myself from buying new clothes all the time and get over my fashion anxiety? Please be nice Thank you!

Most consumers claim they value sustainability but still don't make sustainable purchase choices - what do businesses need to do to change this pattern?

Hey all! Sustainable product options in fashion, home decor and lifestyle have exploded in recent years - why do you think people who care about sustainability still don't choose these options?

I'd also love to hear your thoughts on sustainable brands you love - what makes them so great and accessible, and why are you loyal to them? What do you think they're doing that other brands should take example from?

Sexy sustainable fashion brands??

I'm sorry if my question is dumb or cringey, but I don't know how else to phrase it or where else to ask! Also, I wanted to note that I buy mostly second hand clothes, but I also only buy second hand clothes made from sustainable fabrics like hemp, lyocell or recycled fabrics.

I have looked high and low for a sustainable fashion brand/line/company that makes sexy clothes. By that I mean fitted, low cut tops and short bottoms. Seems like sustainable fashion made from sustainable fabrics almost exclusively makes baggy, earth tone, crunchy grandma clothes. Which is great for basics and casual wear, but I want to treat myself to something a little raunchy, just not at the expense of the earth.

Anyone have any recommendations? Or recommendations for how I can turn a frumpy top into a sexy one with shitty sewing skills? Thanks!!

Why do you still buy Reformation & Everlane?

Being in the sustainable fashion space I was pretty upset when the news of Everlane & Reformations employee abuses came to light. I was even more upset to find people still support them, as if nothing happened. It's amazing how some of their abuses seem to be swept under the rug.

I would be interested to hear why people are still supporting these businesses? I don't want to attack anyone, I am generally curious.

I am also curious on everyone's opion on whether a brand can call itself sustainable if it has major abuse of its employees or a racist/sexist culture? Where do we drawn the line on whats considered ethical and what isn't?

Would love to hear you share your thoughts on online clothes shopping!

Hi, I am writing a research paper on personalised recommendation of clothing for each user in the fashion industry online. I would greatly appreciate any valuable opinions from you on the below questions!

1)As an online shopper of clothing items, how has personalised recommendations (clothes in a site being curated just for you) worked for you on sites you've shopped on and what has made you frustrated with your experience? It can be the description of the clothes that doesn't make sense, bad quality photos to judge or not being able to find what you were looking for?

2)How has your experience been online trying to find the clothes that you wanted to get? The amount of time you have spent on it, being able to get exactly what you want, any confusions you face?

Thank you and hoping to hear all your opinions on it!

Recommendations for men’s shoes/boots made in the USA?

Hey all,

I’m new to the sustainable fashion world, and I’m looking to buy a pair of boots or shoes that are made sustainably in the USA. I see a lot of brands mentioned across this sub, but it’s a little daunting to have to sort through all of them on my own.

Does anyone have any recommendation for shoes or boots that are comfortable and wearable in a variety of situations? Pre-covid I worked in a somewhat casual office, so it would be nice to have a pair of shoes or boots that could be worn both in and out of the office.

Previously I’ve worn Converse almost exclusively, so I’m a big fan of that style, though I am also open to exploring new styles if that’s all that’s available.

Thanks in advance for all your help and recommendations!

How can we prevent our clothes from going into landfill? It's the first day of second-hand September, why not check out how you can create a conscious wardrobe, find your personal way of embodying sustainable style, or even re-design your clothing into something new?
