When your friends seem ok with fast-fashion...

And they say "they were so cheap that I bought it in two colors" and I really have to make an effort remembering why we are friends.

What do your friends say that sounds they're ok with fast fashion?

I'd love to hear that and how you face similar situations.

Love, Valentina

Sustainable and traceable!

We launched a sustainable fashion brand!

By designing timeless essentials in the highest quality out there we implemented every item with a patented QR code that appears after 100 washes, the treshold when our garment starts to pollute by losing quality and leaving microparticles in the wash.

With this technology we make sure to close the loop in order to repurpose with our community of Astronauts.

By producing in Portugal and designing in Amsterdam we want to make sure that by innovation we get closer to nature.
Join us on our mission by becoming an Astronaut at www.astronaut9.space

for the forever curious!

Clothing Recycling Initiative in Africa

Hello friends! I wanted to share a bit about a project I'm helping with.

Uganda imports over 3,500 tonnes of used clothing from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and China every year. Only around 30% is actually usable, and the rest ends up in landfills and scattered across the landscape and waterways because they get more waste than they can handle. Landfills as vast as 30 acres are filled with unusable and discarded clothing, and over 2,000 tonnes are added every day. That’s the equivalent of over 22 football fields. The amount of waste sites increased from 42 in 2008 to over 1,000 in 2015 alone. The increase in waste sites not only plagues the environment, but also increases health related issues in proximity to the sites.

In 2016, the population of Africa was recorded around 1.216 billion. This year it was recorded to be around 1.415 billion. With the growing population, the landfills and waste sites are growing as well. There are very few companies actively taking steps to solve this growing problem, let alone in Africa.

The Larry Rowbs Foundation is looking to make a dent in helping solve this problem, we are currently beginning on expanding our project by sharing the word and fundraising.

With our plan, we plan to -

  1. Create a cleaner environment in Africa, in turn creating less health problems
  2. Create local jobs in Uganda, in turn boosting the economy
  3. Using recycled materials for affordable clothing

Here is our website if you'd like to learn more or talk to Larry Rowbs himself!

https://www.larryrowbsfoundation.com/

Thanks for your time!

The most sustainable fashion

Is not your startup.

It’s not making new clothing.

This sub is all about consumerist nonsense. That’s not sustainable. Reduce and reuse first. Quit buying more things. Quit creating new brands and startups. Where are all the repair posts? The cool thrift finds? The upcycling? All this sub is is posts about yet another brand that’s making new clothing. That’s the problem.

KnowIt: Sustainable fashion never lies...or does it?

Greenwashing refers to the practice of falsely promoting an organization’s environmental efforts or spending more resources to promote the organization as green than are spent to actually engage in environmentally sound practices. Thus greenwashing is the dissemination of false or deceptive information regarding an organization’s environmental strategies, goals, motivations, and actions. " (Becker-Olsen, K., Potucek, S. (2013)).

So, why not stop it at the source? Why don't we educate people on what greenwashing is and what truly sustainable fashion truly means?

Having this is issue in mine, we are aiming to develop a platform - KnowIt - that allows you to learn about sustainable fashion in a simple manner. We plan on not only providing general information on the subject, but also creating a sustainability score so you can easily check if certain textiles are considered sustainable, having into account the whole manufacturing process, from the sourcing of materials to the transportation of the final product, either to a store or to your house.

We find it important to learn about people's concerns and needs so we can develop the best possible product. Therefore, KnowIt has got some questions for you:

  1. Would you be willing to actively use a platform like this to search for information on greenwashing and sustaibility in the textile industry?
  2. Would you want this platform to make it easier for you to shop sustainably?
  3. Would you want a feature that allows you to evaluate the sustainability of your wardrobe?
  4. If you already use a similar platform, what do you consider it is lacking?
  5. Do you consider it would be useful for garments to have a tag with a sustainability score and would you shop differently if they did?

Looking for participants in thesis survey on the topic of Sustainable Fashion

Hey all!

As part of my master's thesis research, I've created a 50 prompt survey which seeks to investigate the value that individuals place on the various traits that may contribute towards an item of clothing being labelled as 'sustainable', and whether increasing the level of trust that we feel towards brands may influence our aptitude to consume mindfully. (link below).

https://forms.gle/tBGrCvDd3s2Bav3U7

If you have a spare 10-15 minutes, your participation would be so appreciated!! Please feel free to also share it with anyone who you think might also be interested :)

*While I regretfully can't offer monetary compensation to y'all who complete it, I would be more than happy to share the findings of this study with you via email when I complete my analysis. (There is a prompt at the end of the survey where you can opt into this).

Upcycle + slow fashion platform where people can co-create with independent designers

There is a new platform getting built called vveave.com . It is a marketplace, so designers + consumers sign up and can contact each other to co-create upcycled pieces or design something slow from scratch. There are some fashion heavy hitters with invested interest in the platforms success, so it is looking like it will blow up. My partner posted a project request of an old leather jacket that he wants to upcycle into something unique. It was his dads coat so it has sentimental value, but he wants to keep it and turn it into something else. He heard back from a few designers already. Looks like most of the designers on the platform are from New York and London. Really cool concept.

Simplifying my wardrobe!

I’ve done quite a bit of reading and personal reflection recently about a huge miss in the sustainability conversation within fashion: quantity. I think a lot of the time companies get away with convincing consumers that all we need for a more sustainable fashion industry is better materials…but then they still make so much stuff, contributing to over consumption. So, I’m challenging myself to start on a journey to simplifying my whole closet! I just joined a bunch of new groups (including this one!) to help motivate and guide me. I also just happened upon this new group…seemed like a super cool place for beginners like me :). Thought I’d share in case anyone else was thinking about this too!

Where can I find more sustainable fashion news coverage?

I follow plenty of Instagram accounts that have good content, and sometimes mainstream news sites will run a piece on a big climate/fashion story, but does anyone have suggestions for more comprehensive coverage on issues of fast fashion etc.? Even climate news orgs like Grist don't have a topic filter for fashion on their site, which I feel like is missing a big chunk of the climate change/sustainability story.

Cea - new sustainable clothing brand launched

Hi lovely community!

I have recently launched my sustainable clothing company and need all the support I can get. When I realized that the current clothing industry and environment don't go hand in hand, I decided to try to be part of the solution. I also struggle with sensitive skin, and was missing more options that were made from natural and organic fabrics. Our factory is BSCI certified to make sure the garment workers are safe & healthy.

Cea was founded to provide you with high-quality pieces that you can shop guilt-free. We are a female owned, self-funded, sustainable & ethical, small business and every single order mean the world to us.

Please let me know if you have any questions about my brand & thank you for the support. <3
