Wardrobe apps: useful in building a conscious closet, or too much work?

I have been using a wardrobe app for a few years now as it gives me visibility into what I’m NOT wearing which I can either use as a prompt to find more ways to wear it and/or learn from why it didn’t work for me so (hopefully) I can shop smarter in the future. While materials and production methods matter in sustainable fashion, I firmly believe the most important thing is to buy fewer things and get more use out of each of them, so this is really important to me.

Pre-pandemic I used Stylebook which worked okay. But during the pandemic, I fully fell off the tracking bandwagon. For me, the fun of wardrobe tracking comes from gamifying my cost per wear: I look at the items in my closet that have a higher cost per wear and try to find new ways to wear them so I can lower that CPW. But this became a lot less fun when I was basically just wearing the same outfit of leggings and tees everyday. I really fell into a rut.

Now that I'm venturing out a bit more and wearing many more "real" clothes, I've revisited the idea of wardrobe apps and looked to see if any other better options have popped up. I ended up trying out a newer one called Indyx. The UI can be a little buggy, but it was entirely free to download and use and the photo processing is quite good. I also think it’s cool that once you catalog your wardrobe, you have the option of connecting to one of their personal stylists to actually help you style from your closet.

Basically I'm wondering: does anyone else do this, or am I the weird one?

If you do like to track your wardrobe, what do YOU use? What makes it fun for you? I'd love to learn from others!

Are you curious about wardrobe tracking, but just can't get over the hurdle of cataloging your closet? Or are you someone for whom the entire idea of wardrobe tracking just gives you the heebie-jeebies because it takes all the fun out of it? I want to hear from the people who definitely don't do this too!

What makes a brand sustainable?

Hi all,

I'm working on a rating with the goal of ranking brands based on their sustainability.

My objective is not to be able to tell, in absolute terms, what brand is sustainable or not, but more to provide a relative way of reading through brands (which one is more or less sustainable than brand X).

Would you have specific questions you would ask yourself when looking at a brand, to make your mind?

Thanks in advance for your questions and suggestions!

Following Love Island’s and Tasha Ghouri’s choosing to partner with eBay as a pre-loved clothing ambassador over numerous other fast fashion brands, do you think she has set the scene for a positive shift in the fast fashion movement?

Further, do you think more influencers will follow suit by leaving fast fashion brand partnerships for more sustainable fashion brands?

Most durable brands when thrifting?

Hi all,

I (M23 5’11” 185lb) am looking to improve my wardrobe with some more durable basics (t-shirts, shirts, jeans, shorts, khakis, etc). I find that many clothes I buy, both new and thrifted, only last a few years. This is by design obviously, thanks to planned obsolescence, and I’m looking to solve this problem as best I can.

I’m wondering if there’s any brand in particular I should search for when thrifting for basics, or even buy new if it’s worth it.

Advice on laundering is welcome as well. I wash cold and hang dry my shirts, but wondering if there’s something else I could do to better preserve the fabrics.

How do you shop sustainably for your kids?

Hey everyone,

I am doing an internship for a company based out of Europe that is making sustainable kid's shoes and am looking for some thoughts or opinions regarding how parents shop sustainably for their children. Some questions to answer can be:

  • What do you look for when shopping sustainably for your kids?
  • Do you prefer shopping in-store vs online?
  • Would you pay more for something you knew was ethically sourced and created and that was 100% biodegradable?
  • Anything else relevant to sustainable children's clothing and footwear

If you have made it this far, thank you for your time. Feel free to comment here or message me if there is anything you'd like to mention.

Here's our story: We were getting really frustrated with how much greenwashing was taking place in index funds and investment platforms. Many investors were oblivious to how "green" funds were still investing in oil, gas or deforestation etc. We wanted to create an alternative, a transparent investment platform committed to pushing companies to change through shareholder engagement and activist investing. We were seeing increasing traction on the market with a growing appetite for ESG engagement (e.g. Caterpillar) and decided to start EarthQuake, a mission focused robo-advisor that allows you to fight back with your money!

Would you buy new unsold and overstock clothing so it doesn't go to waste?

Hi everyone! I'm creating a post to gauge interest in a potential business idea to reduce the amount of clothing that winds up in landfills.

I recently asked myself what brands and retailers do with all of their unsold clothes. These are perfectly good clothes that just weren't sold for some reason or another. Maybe they ordered too many, maybe the store had to close, or something else. Large brands and retailers like H&M have come under fire in recent years for burning their clothes or simply throwing them away. Companies of this size realistically have the supply chain sophistication to figure out another solution (e.g., keep in warehouse until next year, sell to TJ Maxx, etc.), but they often choose not to.

Unlike large companies, smaller, independent brands and retailers realistically don't have the shelf space to hang on to their unsold clothes forever, nor do they have the supply chain negotiating power to sell their unsold clothes off to someone else easily. As influencer and creator culture explode, there must be a ton of brands and retailers that have new, unsold clothes sitting around that they can't sell.

I'm thinking about starting an online-only retail store where I resell new, unsold clothes from small, independent brands and retailers. They would discounted from the original price since they're overstock; this is basically final clearance across small, independent brands. Anything I can't sell I would eventually donate. Is this something people would be interested in? This is, of course, assuming there's something on the website that you like and want to wear :)

I'm truly just trying to get a sense of whether this is something people would consider buying from, so there are no wrong answers. I'm hoping to move forward with opening the online store in the next 4-6 weeks. You can submit your email here if you want to be notified when the store launches: https://wovenstore.co/password

But really, no pressure, I genuinely want to see what people think about this!

How durable if rafia?

I don’t have any personal experience with the material. I only know it’s made out of paper so would it last if I get caught in the rain unexpectedly? Not like dunk it in water wet but a few drops before I’m able to find cover wet.

I saw a rafia bag I really like with some leather details so logically it should withstand it, why pair it with leather if it’s gonna break down from a few drops of water, but fashion these days…it doesn’t have to be logical or make sense.

Is Cottagely sustainable?

I started to search for ethical clothing brands quite recently (after buying from Shein and reading more about it). I am partial to vintage, victorian/edwardian, and cottagecore styles.

I found lots of influencers using products from Cottagely. They have beautiful pieces at a great price and apparently good fabrics (I haven't seen anything polyester and the like).

From their FAQ:

Our products are made in small batches working with independent designers and small business. All our manufacturers follow strict worker protection regulations under CCC certification and monitoring. Our manufacturing is done in China. (Yes. We know. China?! There are great factories with top notch craftspeople that do amazing work in China, too.) The high-skill garment factory workers who produce our clothing make 4-5x the minimum wage.

I couldn't find more information online. What do yall think? Also, can any of you guys recommend brands of similar styles instead? Thanks!

What are some important notes to know about how to make sustainable fashion?

Help?

I'm actually kinda new to this sustainability thing. There's a design competition I want to join and the theme is about sustainability, but mostly focus on upcycling.

I actually joined a sustainability design competition 2 years ago with my zero-waste and transformative design as my main special feature. I didn't make it to top 3, only at 4th place.

I want to give another try this time. But I don't think I could have anything to upcycle. The only thing I could think of was totebag. I have some totebags, like from McD etc. But some people said it won't be comfortable to use totebag material for clothes. And I might gonna need a lot of totebag to make like, maybe a coat, and I only have some, so I might have to cheat the competition by buying some more totebags online. Another thing I have is probably used mask (KF94). Same problem, the comfortability. And some people said it's kinda disguting. Also that means I'm gonna need a lot of masks for that, which I have to cheat again. I don't want to sacrifice my clothes. So I don't know what other option I have.

Honestly, I don't know much about sustainability. I was shocked when the jury asked me about the carbon, the labor, the wage, the price, etc cause tbh, I only like the designing process.

So what are some important notes to know about how to make sustainable fashion? Any advice?

I've heard great things about the brand Youswim and was going to buy a suit, but in the FAQ they say the suits comfortably fit U.S sizes 2-14. I'm a size 0 and have fairly narrow hips, so this just makes me worry that the bottoms won't fit right. I want to go out on a limb and just see if they will fit, but I figured I'd check and see if anyone else had experience as a petite size buying Youswim.

I’m looking for boot recommendations to wear to work. I work in retail and walk all day so I need something that’s gonna last and not kill my feet. I’ve been wearing the same pair of docs for a while and their starting to get holes in the crease marks and would like something that’s gonna last longer. What would help you not fall for all the nasty greenwashing companies do? – On a quest to understand what would help everyone to make more informed choices. Need your advice!

Hey all.

I’ve been working on a project – a chrome extension that helps suggest cleaner alternatives to products on sites like Amazon (don’t like Amazon, aim to take users away from it to small brand sites).

I’m trying to make information accessible to people. As with all the greenwashing companies do, it's hard to see what’s genuine and what's fake.

I’ve spent months researching to find small and ethical businesses that produce genuinely ethical, sustainable products. I’m on a quest to understand how I can make it easy for people to shop consciously. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

What's the best way I can make all the information and research available to everyone out here? Making it convenient and effortless to shop consciously.

I’m really looking forward to some in-depth answers. You can choose to fill in your thoughts in the comments or even have a quick chat

Ethical shoes, australia

Hi all - I’m transitioning to buying more sustainable/ethical and reusing my pieces over and over. I was wondering if people had recommendations for sustainable/ethical shoe shops in australia? I really need new work shoes and I find thrifting shoes very very difficult especially since mine are starting to look genuinely trashed and I don’t have the time.

Specifically looking for black Penny loafers, ideally genuine leather because I think it lasts a lot longer. Thanks in advance
