What are your thoughts on sustainable fashion today?

Hello fashion enthusiast! I have created a survey for my marketing analysis paper for my Fashion Marketing class. It would mean the world if you could take three minutes and fill out this survey!

It is on the consumer perception of sustainable cotton or more generally sustainable fashion.

Even if you do not buy sustainable clothes, please feel free to fill out the survey anyways as you are a fashion consumer nonetheless.

Thank you for your time!

Biodegradable Shipping & Filler

I own a sustainable jewelry brand. Up until now, I have used recycled packaging and paper to ship my jewelry. However, I want to take it a step further and use biodegradable and "plantable" packaging and fillers. I have found a few resources, but thought I'd see if y'all might have a suggestion. I'm in the states, so due to travel/carbon footprint, I'm keen to get something made in North America.

Here are the two companies I'm currently looking at:

Please and thank you!

I made a pom pom (pompon) bag tutorial using old jeans and an old purse, really easy and fun to do! Also possible in other materials, fabric scraps.... and get creative with where you can all apply the pom poms bags, collars, denim jackets, caps, hats, bookcovers, cushion covers, your husband lol

How do I get started in sustainability?

I want to stop using fast fashion but im not sure how to get started. Im interested in both the workers rights and environmental aspects. Natural fabrics also feel much better on my skin. Unfortunately the country I live in dosnt have many thrift stores (if any), and I dont have an unlimited budget.

Can anyone give me pointers on what to look for and how to research brands, good brands that ship internationally, or how I can learn more about sustainable fashion?

I also want to learn how to sew and if anyone has tips on that or what's considered sustainable fabric I would also appreciate that.

Thank you so much :)

[QUESTION] What are the different types of Sustainable Fashion?

So I'm scripting a blog and I need some inspiration...... I've attempted to define sustainable fashion, but discovered it's extremely difficult and complex. I've decided to break Sustainable Fashion down into classifications. "i.e. The 7 Classifications of Sustainable Fashion"

Here are a few examples I've discovered through research. Please indulge your thoughts and shed light on good alternatives to add. New naming conventions encouraged Thanks <3

  1. Natural and Organic Material
    1. growing natural/organic pesticide-free materials
  2. Fit for Purpose
    1. everyday purpose and any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller before buying
  3. Green and Clean
    1. All phases of a product's lifecycle
    2. Pledged to reducing carbon footprint
  4. Fair and Ethical
    1. Respect to social issues
    2. Fair working conditions & wages
  5. Zero-waste fashion
    1. Includes slow fashion, vintage, secondhand, upcycling etc.
  6. Eco-friendly Synthetic Fashion
    1. Recycled, eco-friendly synthetic materials

RESEARCH :What are things sustainable companies can do to increase their sales, monitor consumer behaviour and try and reduce waste after an item is sold. Solutions can be as creative: innovative as possible.

CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON SUSTAINABLE FASHION, specifically consumer behaviour.

  1. What could companies do to attract a larger audience.
  2. As a consumer (YOU) what do you think can be done to reduce clothes going into landfills. I’d there something companies can do/ start doing that can be beneficial to both them and the environment.
  3. Is there anything you think can be done to better the consumer experience of buying sustainable fashion.
  4. Any concerns or additional information or links would be amazing.

If you would mind a giving a brief explanation or expounding on someone’s point I would REALLY appreciate it 💙😊♻️

Asquith London

Asquith London has plenty of good reviews around the internet and on their website. As it turns out, they check all reviews posted to their website before publishing them (ok, fine), but it looks like they end up actually publishing only the really good ones, and just ignore the rest, which is why I've decided to write this post.

I bought their Move It Leggings in the spring directly from the company website. After a few months, there were holes in the rear (over the bum), so I stopped using them for yoga. I started using them instead for jogging, but soon the waist elastic started slipping while running -- not very comfortable. I started using them to wear around the house, but I sit cross-legged a lot, and soon another hole appeared in the crotch area. I submitted a review, which they didn't publish: instead, they contacted me directly to ask for pictures of the problems and offered to send me a replacement. I sent the pics but refused the replacement (I have no need for another pair of bad leggins) and asked again for my review to be published. It wasn't. For a company that claims to be ethical, this is pretty dodgy behaviour.

PS: At the same time, I also bought a jumpsuit which also doesn't seem to be very high quality (but isn't falling apart). My 3 star review of that also remains unpublished.

Sustainable Fashion Questions

Hey guys, I'm a master student at UCL studying entrepreneurship looking at the sustainable fashion space. I'd love to know peoples' experience with sustainable fashion brands, so any answers to the below would be most appreciated:

- Have you bought sustainably before?;

- Where do you tend to buy your clothes?;

- Do you buy mainly online or in a physical retail location? If online, is it direct from a brand or on a marketplace?

Cheers!

It should be easy to find sustainable fashion

Hi!

I work with Cando, a start-up developing a platform and community for all things sustainable fashion. Our goal is to help reduce your carbon emissions by making it easier to find sustainable fashion options, hacks and inspiration. We do that by collecting everything in one place - sustainable brands, second hand, sustainability information and inspiring fashion content.

We recently launched our Kickstarter campaign and we would love your support by backing our campaign or sharing it with friends and family: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cando/cando-find-sustainable-fashion/

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions about the platform!

At JUST SUPPLY, we love to make things a little differently, and as we are a sustainable business, promoting over-consumption and impulsive driven purchases is something we don't want to do. We thought about what should we do in Black Friday, and nothing sounded better than doing the exact opposite of everybody else. Instead of doing promotions, we are giving the planet a discount! Yes, during this Friday ( 27th of November) we are donating all our profits to the Mangrove Action Project. So this Friday, our products will be even more sustainable than ever before. Oh, and even if we are not buying something from us, remember to buy from small independent businesses. Shop all here.

What do you think of these Jeans Redesign Guidelines?

The rapid rise of fast, throwaway fashion has prompted a call for action for designers, manufacturers and industry stakeholders to work collectively to change the design process with sustainability in mind.

This includes jeans, the target of Make Fashion Circular’s newest set of guidelines, aptly named the Jeans Redesign Guidelines. The goal? If these fashion giants jointly use this design standard and implement it at scale, it will eliminate the waste and pollution generated at the first thread of the supply chain.

Lichi - brand experiences

hello fellow humans,

I just cam across Lichi, a german fashion brand that claims to be sustainable/ethical. However the prices make me think that they're cutting corners in some places. Does anyone have any experiences with this brand? Are the clothes of good quality? Does their allience with the ethical trading initiative check out? As far as I can tell it does, but like I said the prices make me a bit skeptic. Any input is very appreciated!

note: I'm a broke student, with limited options for shopping second hand from big brands. And even though I do understand the prices sustainable brands ask for their clothes, I will ask to please please please don't link any amazing alternative clothing brands with an average clothing price of above $200,-. I don't think that my emotional health can take another hit like that. Thank you.

Undergraduate Thesis on Sustainable Fashion

Hi, r/SustainableFashion! I'm a 4th year student of Industrial Design planning on doing my final capstone project focused on producing clothing with minimal waste. I mainly plan to do this through upcycling and using natural materials.

I am currently in the research phase of my project and put together a short survey to get some knowledge of the product life cycle and which items are thrown out the most. Any and all responses are appreciated. Thanks!

Important issues

Hello everyone! I am a film production student making a short documentary about sustainable fashion. I am fairly new at this so I came here to ask you for any important issues, tips, "secrets" etc. about this topic that could fit into a 10 minute short documentary. Aka a short guide for somebody who is just getting into sustainable fashion. Thanks you all in advance! looking forward to your answers!

btw if you could recommend any existing documentaries about this for inspiration that would be helpful too :)

I built a browser extension and website that gives you brand sustainability information and better alternatives while you browse

I found myself spending a lot of time researching brands whenever I wanted to make a purchase. I really want to support the right brands, but it’s simply way too hard to figure out what brands are truly ethical. Since I'm a journalist and was doing the research for myself already anyway I decided to make something to help others to reliably make more sustainable choices as well.

So introducing.... Fairify! Me and my GF (also a journalist) have developed a framework that objectively measures how brands perform on the main pillars of sustainability (planet, people, animals) and display that information casually while you browse. Next, we give you better brand alternatives that match with the current brand you’re looking at. You can also request a brand in the extension, and we’ll research its sustainability. On our website, you can find elaborate reports on the brands we’ve researched. So basically, we do the research so you don't have to anymore. We currently feature about 250 fashion brands and keep adding more every day :)

Since most of you probably feel the same pain when shopping online, I'm really excited to share this with you and very curious about what all of you think! I've already posted this to /r/ethicalfashion, but we can really use the feedback so if you have any, let me know!

Chrome extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fairify/ihhnjaldplieckfjeajkofelmilcmboi?hl=en-GB

Hi, I'm David

I'm the founder of JUST SUPPLY. I'm a 16-year-old from the south of Portugal. Since I was very young (yes I know I'm not old but you get the point) I loved the idea of creating a company and having my own business. I have been doing this for almost 2 years. At that time I was sick of the clothing I was buying, made with ridiculous low quality and just straight-up filled with boring designs. After I learned the impact that this fast fashion was making to the world I wanted to get involved. JUST SUPPLY was created with the combination of my passion for companies and my discomfort with the fashion industry. My purpose with this brand is to create fashion that is accessible to everyone, that respects everyone and that empowers all the people involved in it. I want to create a brand praised not only by being ethical but as well by being well-made. I want still to be a young and fun brand that besides sustainability is recognized by its amazing designs. If you like what I'm doing just follow along (and if you feel extra kind share it with your friends).

I think this is going to be a fun ride.

What can you do to promote slow fashion? A list of resources

Hey guys! I'm a freelance climate writer & my aim is to make information about sustainability and what we can do to help the planet accessible & easy to understand.

I thought I would share a list I wrote in September, of the resources to learn more and do more about the fast fashion crisis! Hope this is interesting to some of you :)

LEARN MORE

TRY SOMETHING NEW

  • Use the Good On You app to see how ethical your favourite fashion brands are & find sustainable brands to support.
  • Read: 10 easy ways to make your wardrobe a bit more sustainable.
  • Sign up to Secondhand September, a free campaign run by international anti-poverty charity Oxfam to encourage people to avoid buying any new clothes for a month. It's not September now but that doesn't mean you can't get involved anyway ;) Share your pledge on social media to spread the word!

CHANGE THE SYSTEM

  • Check out ethical fashion advocacy organisation Fashion Revolution who have created a page on how citizens can support their work to push for laws to make fashion production greener & fairer.
  • Slow Fashion Season was a campaign running until the 21st September, but there’s never a bad time to get involved. Pledge to join the movement, and follow and share @slowfashionseason on Instagram.
  • Follow the UN Fashion Alliance on social media to keep up-to-date and support action for ethical fashion happening at the global level.

Anyway, this was a super-long post but I hope it was interesting and if you have any other resources, please share! Also if you like this, I post a new email every 2 weeks about a different topic of climate action on my newsletter. The next one is on sustainable development :)

Making face masks from secondhand fabric: Do you prefer the over-the-ear loops face masks or the tie-on around the head face masks?

My friend and I have been working on a brand called Regood. We focus on providing sustainable, useful, and affordable home and lifestyle basics--face masks, oven mitts, and linens--made out of secondhand fabrics. We work with thrift stores to take the textiles they can't accept due to space, quality, or other limitations.

We're starting with face masks and kitchen linens and want to see if people prefer the looped over the ear face masks vs. the tie-on around the head face masks in addition to a couple other small things. If you have a minute, please take our survey: https://shopregood.typeform.com/to/eCaUAvKC.

Thank you so much!

I did an upcycling experiment, trying to bring new life in an old mens shirt by combining two fabric manipulation techniques: acid and heat gun. I made a check-like pattern with the acid and went over it with the heat gun after, results were quite surprising unfortunately the heat is hard to control
