How much are you willing to pay for an organic cotton, sustainable, & ethical t-shirt?

Hey all! I'm doing research on affordable sustainable fashion and would love to get more opinions in this 1-minute survey.

I'm hoping to start my own affordable sustainable marketplace that will launch this year. I'm curious to see how much we're all are willing to pay for an organic cotton, sustainable & ethical t-shirt!!

Fashion sustainability tools

Hi again sub!

Thanks to those who contributed to my question regarding sustainability in a fashion context.

I have another question which I wish to use in my research paper.

Which tools to you use, or are available to consumers to help determine what brands are sustainable.

I have already looked into the following, but would love if you could recommend me some more:

- Good On You

- Fashion Transparency Index

- Remake Sustainability Criteria

- B Corp certificate

Thanks again for your help.

Looking for sustainable brands that are more fun - bolder colors - statement garments

I know a lot of sustainable brands are very muted - earth tones, basic or hippy vibes. I want to shop sustainable but I need a little more flair in my looks. Anyone got suggestions of where to look?

Help with assignment! What does sustainable fashion mean to you?

Hey sub!

I'm about to start writing a paper on sustainability reporting of companies (within the fashion industry)

As the trem "sustainability" has no fixed definition, I want to put it to the community to gather an overall idea of what sustainability means to you within a fashion context.

No wrong answers, please state your opinion.

Looking forward to hear your responses.

Thanks

free course - start a sustainable clothing line - finding suppliers

Has anyone else been hit with an influx of sponsored posts promoting individuals online courses or "master classes" for everything from starting your dream company? The advertisements have been nonstop for me. What really caught my eye were the thousand dollar courses on how to start a sustainable fashion company.

Um, what?

I had a friend who was about to press the add to cart button on one of them, and I was like, save your money I'll teach you all of this for free.

So, I am offering 100% free content on how to start a clothing line. This first post is about how to find an ethical and sustainable manufacturer. I will be releasing a new article about once a week to help guide all of you at home who want to start their dream clothing line while having a little extra quarantine time to work on their goals.

One of my goals with virtue + vice has always been to educate for free. I don't think information should be behind a paywall. I am lucky enough that I make my money from consulting with bigger brands, so I am able to afford to offer this type of free content to everyone else just starting out!

How do you go about being a sustainable clothing buyer?

Is second hand shopping the ultimate way?

Or are there other interesting sustainable alternatives?

Should "Sustainable Clothing" be priced at a higher price?

So I was thinking about pricing in terms of Sustainable Clothing and I was wondering if it would ever be possible to make Sustainable Clothing reasonably affordable so that everyone could afford it.

The lower the price tag, the most likely someone on the other side of the planet is being exploited.

On the other side of the spectrum, the more expensive it is to buy Sustainable Clothing, the fewer people will buy it, as it is not accessible to everyone.

Will we ever find a balance between these two?
What do you think about this?

Thrift Flip Business

Hi guys!

My friend and I recently launched a thrift flipping online store so we thrift for items that are durable and of quality and sew it to other items that fit better/ look better with the fabric. We aim to eventually be big enough to manufacture our own pieces sustainably.

Right now I’m just looking for answer for a few things

1) sustainable labels - we want to add a small label for our clothing, any idea on sustainable options that are low on cost?

2) packaging - we are relatively small and want to use as little waste as possible, what packaging from which companies impressed any of you?

Thank you for your help in advance! :-)

Would a subscription model for clothing work?

So I was thinking about why we do not yet have a subscription model for clothing. It could be an interesting option to prevent people from continuously buying new clothes from fast-fashion retailers.

Not mentioning that we'd be able to re-use clothes time and time again, as people give their clothes back instead of throwing them away.

And the number of clothes that would be produced would drastically decrease, as our clothes would have a much longer life-cycle. It could help us get closer to what is called a "Circular" clothing industry.

What do you think about this?

To aspiring contemporary fashion brands

PREFACE: Consumerism is reaching a critical halt with the pandemic this therefore presents a problem for us aspiring brand entrepreneurs. The fashion industry is one of the markets suffering the most from this economical shift. With the following passage I will address two phenomena that inherently are affecting the fashion world. The first is a social economical stand point and the second is the “drake culture vulture” circumstance.

-A RIFT HAS BEEN CREATED ONCE AGAIN-

High end fashion and regular fast fashion are gonna have an enormous rift between these two industries. Why? The masses can’t spend their income on “extra things”.In 2018 consumerism was at an all time high ,that which separated high end with low end was non-existent.Accessible to all masses ,the rich were rich so who gives a fuck ,the middle class was wealthy and the lower class was able to be indebted cause of low interest rates in the majority of countries . Those interest rates are gonna sky rocket in these next months ,why ?

The banks need money cause they’re too busy giving loans to the majority businesses cause If you haven’t noticed ,there’s no consumerism in non dispensable products. The companies that pertain to these niches they’re all f-ing broke.Covid is bad but it’s triggered a bigger flu that could ever be contained.

Pretty much “An immense rift between high end fashion and low end fashion has segregated them once again”

-Formal informality potentially will be the next wave-

Taking into consideration the aforementioned. This now allows distinguished designers too expend more on lavish materials.Cause now their market shall be directed towards the high end buyers.More expensive materials , higher end cloths ,cuts that suit the wealthy(formality). The fashion market hasn’t been able to shift away from the typical graphic tees that have dominated the market since the 2010’s that deter from unique cut and sews.Perhaps this could be seen as a necessary evolution leaving behind the standard of mediocrity that has saturated the fashion world.

Ok now so the second is Drake “The culture vulture” it’s pretty apparent that celeb pop culture has a big influence on what we see as “desirable”. Drake Champaign papi ,this dude whatever he touches turns to gold now ,why cause he’s drake ! You cannot lie that he as an individual has had an influence on pop culture ,which ultimately translates into our daily lives as a society.

Drake up until recently has changed his market direction towards the uk grime scene ,he’s with other dudes now you can say which then transforms drake. The uk is becoming a power house for both music innovation and fashion innovation where high end brands like: Montcler,Heliot Emil , Aylx,Acw and the biggest one Stone Island seem to dominate this scene .Drake has notability been seen in his most previous music videos ONLY SPORTING THESE NEW UP AND COMING BRANDS , on his new song he mentions Alyx in his CHORUS ,now everybody is gonna be saying alyx and that’s Promotion bub! This will only help these brands become the center point of fashion trendsetters.

In conclusion I’d like to state that; with the nuances of technology and easily accessible softwares , globalization of markets. In our current era never has it been more easy to become an entrepreneur. The latter is that , the standard consequently must be raised to avoid saturation, only allowing the truly innovative a platform so they may define this generations art of expression .This may sound Darwinistic but I feel that the same way nature disposes of the weak so should this market aspire to accomplish.

Everybody may have something to convey but not everything can be felt due to its disillusive intention.Seek within but also seek outside ones-self to determine what value you may offer.

Thank you for reading I’m open to any opinions or criticism , I am simply saying something I feel should be known in order to create quality rather than quantity in today’s boundless world.

Fellow founders of sustainable brands: What's your stage and challenge(s)?

Hello, I'm working on an own sustainable womenswear brand in Vienna, Austria. I actually wanted to launch quite a time ago, but it seems that I will still need months ... (of course also due to Corona)

Honestly, I never thought it would take that long, and I feel it just takes much more time and effort if you want to use sustainable materials only and to produce in a sustainable and ethical way. For me as a one-woman show the main challenge was definetely searching suppliers for sustainable fabrics and manufacturers that also follow through with their sustainability promises and then to meet their MOQs. In contrast, if I had opted for non-sustainable materials or was producing in China or Bangladesh, I could have launched months ago..

Don't get me wrong, I definetely don't regret ensuring my brand will be fully sustainable and would never do it differently due to my core values, but sometimes it's just discouraging that making ethical choices is so difficult.

I just felt the need to share my opinion here to see if there're people out there who are dealing with the same issues. So I'm curious, who else is currently working on a sustainable brand? In which stage are you (prototype, searching fabrics/manufacturers, sampling, launched ...) and what are/were your challenges?

Sustainable Fashion App, please help!

Hey everyone!! Super nice to meet you all! Right, so, my problem is that I wish they had a sustainable fashion range in all the brands I used to like, as I feel it is so hard to find clothing that I do like and suits my style in sustainable brands. Over the year it is getting better and I have two brands I really love (Balzac and Sezane) They are kind of sustainable and ethical but not entirely.

So I am creating an app to figure this out and make it more easy to find THE sustainable/ethical version of the piece of clothing you want and like.

I am building my business plan for investors. If you are interested, you can complete the below survey to assist with the market search:

Tell me your story

During the past weeks, a couple of my Bolivian friends and I started reflecting on the changes that we would like to see in the world once the pandemic is over. After a few hours of conversation, we were able to connect with each other through a common passion - fashion. Each of us had a distinct background, experience, and knowledge on the impact that clothing had on our lives. Today, we have finally been able to come with a solution for a common problem that humanity has been facing: consumerism. The end goal of our project is to support sustainable fashion ideas - of repurposing, redistributing, and reconnecting with our physical planet. During the upcoming weeks, we will be collecting stories, memories, poems, and songs from people, in order to start creating a new movement in the fashion dialogue. Ethical jewellery, fairtrade gold etc

I am a jewellery designer/maker based in London and I have used Fairmined and Fairtrade gold for 5 years. I have visited Tanzania and Namibia and seen first hand how materials are mined, how tough conditions are & how if done properly the materials used in jewellery can provide a living, even empowerment to the communities who mine them.

I'm interested to learn from people how important you see these issues and how much is known about the issues.

Would you be surprised, for instance, to hear that blood diamonds are still an issue? Gold funding conflict has always been a bigger issue than diamonds funding conflict? Lab-grown diamonds are BS from an ethics point of view? Recycled gold is just greenwashing?

Hey everyone,

Please check out my new sustainable and ethical shirts, they are made from hemp and organic cotton and made in a fair wear certified vertically integrated manufacturer. I'm super passionate about sustainable and ethical fashion and this has been a dream of mine to see this brand come alive! I'm so close to reaching my goal - which will mean that I can get my first shirts into production!

If you can help by buying one, or sharing my project with friends, family and social media it would mean the world to me. I knew it wouldn't be easy launching my own sustainable fashion range, but launching just a week before this COVID 19 pandemic blew up it has been increasingly tough to get this far.

I am so close now and can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I just need a little bit more help to push it over the line! I have less than 36 hours now so hit the remaining of my goal!

Interested in Sustainable Sportswear? Please answer my survey!

Hey guys! I'm a Fashion Management student and sustainability enthusiast and am currently completing a research project on how young consumers in the UK are feeling about sustainable sportswear apparel. If you identify as female, were born in or after 1991, have ever lived in the UK and have 5 min to spare I would be thrilled if you could answer my survey 😁 THANK YOU! #sustainability #sustainablefashion #sportswear https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfQjrnSdvv5DJrg6QBzAj_1TsYUL-tILx1xgZIhJxq6YYQV1g/viewform?usp=sf_link

Has anyone heard of the brand Girlfriend Collective? If so are they actually sustainable? Looking for some greener athletic clothing brands!

Brand Showcase/Feedback

Hey there everyone, I run a sustainable clothing line based out of Toronto and wanted to share with y'all our goal and vision

The brand is called "Uniquity" (uniquitytoronto.ca) and that's our website where if you click "what" you can read our expansive lore on the logos. The idea to work in sustainable fashion came because I really just liked how soft bamboo fabric was in comparison to pretty much any other fabric. From there I wanted to make it my niche to focus on sustainability, but also street style fashion. Most sustainable brands are female focused and also really heavy on "green living". Which is great, but I wanted to bring sustainable fashion to people who were closed minded to it, rather than already willing to switch their style for the sake of going green. Basically, the vision is to minimize the compromise for style and ethically made, especially for male/unisex clothing

Almost everything we've made is made and printed in Canada, but because I'm a student, and therefore so are most of my friends who wanted to support, I made two items that were not in that category just because it was requested. I will likely not continue to do this, as the costs to work with Canadian business that wasn't sustainable, was not much cheaper than the cost to work with Canadian business that is sustainable

The only thing really holding us back from growing further is creating the demand and getting the word out. We've done the research and we can make everything we want at home (guaranteeing proper labour conditions) and we can even use our own selected fabrics (minimizing water waste and carbon output) but obviously we need interest to move forward with those plans

I'm bringing all of this up because I want whoever sees this to understand that we aren't trying to push overpriced t shirts and hoodies (because compared to other sustainable brands, we're very competitive) but we're using these simple, and easy to produce items in order to generate the interest and sales necessary to expand as a brand, without giving up on our core values

Please explore the website, every new mailing list subscriber and instagram follower and interaction goes a long way to helping us move forward. I could talk more but I feel I've covered the basics, if anyone's interested please leave a comment or some feedback :)

"launch your sustainable brand within weeks"

Hey everyone! My name is Marco, I'm from Vienna, Austria and currently founding a startup in the sustainable fashion sector.

My team and I are working on a platform to help fashion designers & small brands in Europe to launch their new collections within weeks instead of months with on-demand production (from certified & sustainable manufacturers only!) and by supporting them in their supply chain process.Let me know what you think! I'm happy to connect and share more info if needed :)

I hope you all have a good day and #stayhealthy!

Behind Just: Our Story

So I'm starting to post more regularly on the JUST SUPPLY JOURNAL, this is the new article.

In 2018 I was interested in starting a small business, but I didn't know what to create. I started by doing some research, and I came across a documentary about sustainability problems in the fashion world. After watching this documentary I realized what I wanted to do, help fashion transition to a more sustainable industry. After spending 2018 creating, learning and researching about fashion and sustainability, I launched a test collection on Teespring in April 2019. I was sure that Teespring wasn't a good option, but it was a start. In November I launched the online store with the current collection, "materials". It has started quite slow, but I'm still confident that I'm going in the right direction, always learning and perfecting this project.
I'm David, and I'm here to welcome you on this journey with me. It has been a crazy 2 years, and we are only starting.

Which brands do you consider to be the worst for sustainable fashion and why?

I’d like to know which brands I should try and avoid if possible
