Is gold leaf a sustainable glitter alternative?

So I have a curiosity: I love Flamboyant, fantasy aesthetics, just the real pretty, ethereal stuff. Glitter is a real staple, but I want to completely phase it out due to it being a microplastic, and the biol glitter being a bit too expensive for my budget currently but I'll be a big advocate when I can afford it.

But I use gold leaf for crafts and even fancy cake decor, and it is actually really pretty when stuck all over my skin and clothing. Being a metal, and even one that is safely edible, is it a safer alternative to microplastics?

Learn to make a handbag from old jeans. Combining the baguette bag with a scrunchy aesthetic by using the simple but effective gathering fabric technique. Because of the double layer I used almost the whole jeans to create the bag which is great because my scrap box is FULL lol. Hope you enjoy.

BEST SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR

Hey everyone!

Have you heard of Londre Bodywear before? I recently ordered a bathing suit from them and absolutely love it! Their fabrics are made from upcycled plastic water bottles which I was hesitant on at first. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised that they fit amazing and it's a Canadian female-owned brand.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.

One more way how to be sustainable in your fashion choices

Alright, folks, I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit, but I wanted to share something that might be helpful to some of you. So, here's the deal: I've been struggling with body image issues because my hips are a bit bigger than what's considered "normal." It really messes with my confidence, especially when it comes to finding pants and shorts that look good on me. They just don't seem to fit right.

But then, a brilliant idea struck me one day. I thought to myself, there have to be other guys out there who are dealing with the same problem, but who really know their stuff when it comes to fashion. And that's when I came up with this awesome platform called www.samebody.net. It's a place where people with similar body issues (and even those without them) can come together and learn from each other's experiences.

Here's how it works: You upload a picture of yourself and include your age, height, bust size, waist, and hip size. This way, others can easily find your pictures when searching for specific body parameters. As a side effect now you can connect with a bunch of dudes who have similar bodies and swap/exchange clothes that will actually fit you!

p.s It`s like instagram but with tummy sizes :D please feel free to ask if you have any questions!

What do you think of sustainable fashion aiding developing economies?

Hello wonderful people!

As someone who values sustainable fashion, I'd love to share my story ๐Ÿ’› I grew up in East Africa and throughout my childhood I saw the poorest people wearing Abercrombie & Fitch shirts and GAP hoodies etc. All these American and European brands you could never find in Africa. I always wondered where they found these clothes ๐Ÿค” I later found out that these garments were donated from the Western churches and charities. I learned that while in the west the heavily marketed perception was that of a moral deed helping developing nations, in reality it was perpetuating providing a free supply of clothing to an economy that was being robbed of its potential. This free supply wasn't allowing for the Ugandan economy for example to thrive on its own textile industry.

In 2018, I took my husband to Africa for the first time. We went to this eccentric and lively market only to find locally made garments, jewelry and much more. I stumbled upon these super cool jackets and hoodies that had African fabric sewed on in a magestic yet minimalistic design. They were so beautifully styled that when we took them back to the US and Canada, at restaurants, bars and even the streets... 7/10 people asked us where we got our jackets from. I was shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

This naturally sparked an idea to create a sustainable fashion brand that supports African economies by providing skills and jobs to African women to empower the African textile industry. Our mission would be to enhance the scope and space for minimalistic African fabric in everyday wear. Not presenting as overtly traditional but rather sharing a piece of the motherland onto a jacket that would hopefully become a unique piece in your wardrobe.

What do you think about supporting developing economies through the fashion industry? Would you wear minimalistic African textiles?

[Humble request if you're interested in this topic, not intended to spam this space] I would be eternally grateful if you'd help us with our mission by filling out a detailed questionnaire that will help us design a meaningful clothing line. If you happen to have 10 minutes, there's a nice perk offered for completing the questionnaire here. Thank you for considering ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’›

KindBuys now includes BCorp Assessment Results

Hi all!

As some of you may know, KindBuys aggregates sustainable & ethical third-party certification data for companies and products. One of the certifications we look for is BCorp. We've received feedback that, since BCorp is such a complex certification, we should include the actual BCorp Score for each company.

So now, when viewing certification data on the KindBuys shop or database, you can see the product's/company's BCorp Assessment Breakdown (assuming we've collected the data, it is a work in progress).

As always, let us know what you think!

What Data Do You Want to See for Supply Chain Transparency in Sustainable Fashion?

Hello fellow Redditors,

I'm currently working on a digital product passport tool aimed at promoting supply chain transparency and sustainable practices in the fashion industry. We understand that the textile supply chain can be incredibly complex, and our goal is to assist brands in collecting and presenting supply chain data in a user-friendly manner.

Aaand I need your valuable input if you care to share! As consumers who care about sustainable fashion, we want to ensure that the information presented through our tool is relevant, meaningful, and trustworthy. So, we'd love to hear your thoughts on what kind of data you would expect to see when scanning a QR code on a jacket, and how you would determine if the provided data is verified.

Here are a few questions to get the discussion started:

  1. What specific details about the supply chain are important to you? (e.g., raw material sources, manufacturing processes, labor conditions, transportation methods)

  2. Do you prefer visual representations (e.g., infographics, images) or detailed written descriptions?

  3. How can brands effectively communicate their sustainability initiatives through this tool?

  4. What measures or certifications would help you determine the authenticity and accuracy of the supply chain data?

  5. Are there any specific features or functionalities you would like to see in a digital product passport tool?

Please feel free to share your ideas, suggestions, or any other thoughts on transparency in the fashion industry.

Thank you in advance ๐Ÿ™

Telling the truth about 'sustainable commerce': just buy less.

I read something about ‘sustainable commerce’ and got triggered. So I ended up writing a short essay about it.
My goal with this was to remind us / make it clear what does ‘consuming more sustainably’ truly mean: a 'no buy' first. Unfortunately, I don't see that hierarchy said out loud enough; which is frustrating.
Thanks in advance for reading. Any feedback is welcome so please, don’t hesitate to reach out and/or shoot your questions/doubts right here ✌️

Favourite charity shops (UK)? Barnardo's just ditched its commitment to sustainable fashion.

My nearest Barnardo's is one of the most beautiful charity shops I've been in. If it wasn't for the branding and the slat wall, you'd soon forget you were in a charity shop. My second nearest Barnardo's is also great for clothing, but today I was informed by the volunteers *all* Barnardo's stores have been banned from selling jewellery. Despite all the beautiful displays, they're not even allowed to put jewellery in their window displays anymore - not even on the mannequins. Apparently the ban comes in place from Friday.

Where's it going? All donations of jewellery now have to go to their central eBay warehouse, where a team of 'valuers' will sort it. Anything worth more than £20 secondhand (eBay sold listings) will be listed individually, everything else will be bundled into 5-10kg bags and sold as a job lot (5kg makes £50-80 apparently). These job lots include costume jewellery that could have been sold in-store individually, and BNWT costume jewellery which could have been sold in-store for higher prices.

If that wasn't bad enough, volunteers who work for Barnardo's just to value and/or merchandise the jewellery have been told they either take up other tasks or leave. The one who oversees jewellery in my nearest store used to work for a major auction house specialising in jewellery! Store Managers and their pad staff have also been told they'll receive formal warnings if they refuse to comply with this ban. Apparently senior managers believe volunteers are costing the organisation too much money by 'missing gems' so the best option is to send it all to eBay. Madness!
SO, I 100% refuse to shop at Barnardo's anymore. Which charity retailers are generally more fashion conscious these days? I am not very keen on the sort of generic 90s style charity shop but I guess it depends on the stock? I just latched onto Barnardo's as I found my local ones to be great. Also, which have the best people management practices? I don't really want to contribute to charities who treat their staff dirty. And where do you all donate your clothes to? Any preferences?

Billboards are made out of a very flexible, durable and water/UV resistant vinyl. Whats makes these bags so amazing is the different graphics and colors you get with each bag.

Check them out and let me know what you think! We're gathering as much feedback as we can so if you want one and are willing to give us your thoughts, please use this coupon code at checkout for 50% of all tote bags: reddittote

Ideas for how to ethically and sustainably - but affordably - run a small T-shirt business

My friend and I had a lot of ideas for funny graphic t’s we could make and were interested in starting a small side business selling custom printed shirts on Redbubble or Etsy. However, I understand that there’s a lot of waste in clothing production and often unethical business practices in how they’re manufactured. I’d like to minimize our impact where we can in sourcing the shirts while hopefully still being able to sell them at a decently affordable price. Any advice or ideas? Tysm!

Did you know that recycled poly textiles have been around since 1993 - with Patagonia being the first brand to use them?

Back a few years ago when every brand and every magazine was claiming how they were "saving the planet," especially our oceans - I always felt like something was just a little, well, off.

So, I wrote this article about the downsides to recycled poly (no, not microplastics) that no one is talking about.

I'd appreciate your feedback on the designs I've created. Working on logo variations for TrueSustain, a company verifying brands' sustainability claims. The logo should convey trust and authenticity. The logo should act as a certification mark that that other brands can use on their websites

Clothing Swap & Potluck

Hey there!

I recently launched a waitlist for a location-based peer to peer fashion rental and resale platform I'm starting, and I'd really like to host a clothing swap event to get people excited. Does anyone have any advice for putting on a clothing swap? I have about 20 people coming, I'm thinking of hosting in a park near me, but would love any tips!

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Cork slides in size EU 35/US 4/UK 2?

Hi, sadly I want to buy new sandals for the summer, because I can't bring myself to wear second hand sandals (since they are not worn with socks). I really want the vegan Birkenstock, but they don't have the size 35 shipped where I live for some reason (Israel).

I'm looking for something very comfortable with a cork-like sole, NOT the EVA-rubber style. I have that and it's great for cleaning the house, but wearing it outside is terrible because it's sticky in the heat.

I looked at NAE, V.GAN, Good Guys, Able, NOAH, Will's Vegan Store - they all start the sizes at 36. Teva is a local brand, but their vegan option looks like my dog chewed it, so I prefer not to pay 110 USD for something that comes pre-chewed.

I just want something comfortable, vegan, and of good quality that will last several years, and in my size. Preferably not more expensive than the Birkentock (around 110-120 USD too) because that's already the upper limit for me. But if it's REALLY good quality maybe.

Do you have any recommendations? Than you!

fabric greenwashing - need help

Can I get some help from the community?

I was the very first person over 7 years ago to break the story that deadstock fabric is not as sustainable as brands would like you to believe...

Since then, my writing has been knocked off multiple times, and thanks to the strange google algo updates, people who copied me are now outranking me on search!

What the hell?

They say the more external (non-google) traffic a post gets, the better Google will rank it. So, I thought it was worth a shot.

Please can you click on over and check out the article. Not only is it super interesting. But, it will help me combat all these copycat "journalists" and bloggers.

Consumers drive the demand for fast fashion, and companies provide a pathway for consumption. Blaming companies for fast fashion neglects consumer responsibility.

As an individual, I am sharing my personal thesis on the relationship between fast fashion and consumer responsibility, which aims to challenge the common misconception that companies are solely responsible for the industry's unsustainable practices.

The fast fashion industry has become a global phenomenon in recent years, with its fast-paced production, low prices, and constant release of new collections. It is often portrayed as a problem caused by companies and brands who prioritize profits over people and the environment. However, this perspective overlooks the role that consumers play in driving the demand for fast fashion.

The term "fast fashion" refers to a business model that relies on rapidly producing inexpensive clothing that is meant to be worn for a short period before being discarded. Fast fashion is built on the idea of producing low-cost items that mimic the latest fashion trends seen on the runways. Consumers are able to purchase these items at a fraction of the cost of designer fashion, leading to a culture of overconsumption and disposability.

Consumers are often seen as passive participants in the fast fashion industry, with companies dictating what they should wear and how they should consume. However, this perspective ignores the fact that consumers actively choose to buy fast fashion and perpetuate its cycle. Consumers are not victims of fast fashion; they are active participants who contribute to the industry's growth and sustainability.

Companies and brands are not the sole drivers of the fast fashion industry; they are simply responding to consumer demand. If consumers did not want fast fashion, companies would not produce it. However, the reality is that consumers do want fast fashion, and they actively seek out the latest trends and low prices. Companies are simply providing a pathway for consumers to consume fast fashion, meeting the demand that consumers create.

While it is true that companies have a responsibility to produce clothing in an ethical and sustainable way, blaming companies for the rise of fast fashion takes away the responsibility of consumers. Consumers have the power to make more conscious choices about their consumption, such as buying secondhand, investing in high-quality clothing, or simply consuming less. However, the culture of overconsumption and disposability perpetuated by consumers allows companies to continue producing fast fashion.

Moreover, consumers often prioritize low prices over ethical and sustainable practices. While it is easy to blame companies for producing cheap clothing, it is important to recognize that consumers are also complicit in perpetuating a system that prioritizes profits over people and the environment. If consumers were willing to pay more for clothing produced in an ethical and sustainable way, companies would have no choice but to shift their practices.

In conclusion, the fast fashion industry is a complex issue that cannot be solely attributed to companies and brands. Consumers play an active role in driving the demand for fast fashion, and companies are simply responding to this demand. Blaming companies for the rise of fast fashion takes away the responsibility of consumers and perpetuates a culture of overconsumption and disposability. It is important for consumers to recognize their role in perpetuating the fast fashion industry and make conscious choices about their consumption to shift the industry towards a more sustainable and ethical future.

How To Turn $1,500 into $10,000 in 2 Orders! ๐Ÿ’ฐ

A customer sent us his designs and we quoted him a price of $15 for 100pcs netting him a total of $1500. He sold those jeans for $50 each and made $5000. Reinvested that money back into his brand and placed another order for 300pcs, this time the manufacturer gave him a discount and charged $14 per piece netting him a total of $4200. He sold those 300pcs for $50 again and made $15,000 minus his invest of $4200 on the second order he profited over 10k in just 2 months. Whats stopping you from taking your clothing brand to the next level?

Technical Clothing for Outdoor Activities

We've heard the phrase "Cotton kills" - referring to its lack of warmth retention when wet, and so it is not advisable to wear cotton on outdoor expeditions in climates that may have damp weather. But what about other natural fabrics? Hemp is supposed to be good at moisture wicking; I suspect it is better than cotton but is it good enough? for situations where the right clothing choice might be a life or death decision.

Wool is good for warmth retention, but might be too warm in some climates and is heavy when wet.

Technical fabrics in clothing purposely designed for outdoor activities always seems to be nylon or polyester - petroleum based I assume, although sometimes there are recycled options. Recycling, as we know, only kicks the can down the road, ultimately these fabrics won't biodegrade, may pile off microplastic pollution, all that yucky unsustainable stuff that we are trying to avoid (correct me if I'm wrong, but that is my understanding).

I've also heard durable waterproof coatings on technical fabrics are toxic.

Are technical fabrics needed for safety? After all, people lived and worked in extreme outdoor conditions for centuries before they were invented. What about the "oilskins" - canvas impregnated with linseed oil - people used to wear? Can outdoor clothing be sensible and sustainable? What's the best choice? Thoughts and insights, please!

Help us reach 5,000 sign-ups for our sustainable fashion browser extension, Ramuri! ๐ŸŒฟ

Hello everyone! I'm a student from the University of Toronto, and our startup is working on an exciting project called Ramuri, a browser extension that helps you shop more sustainably by providing ratings and insights on fashion brands' environmental impact, social responsibilities, animal welfare, and transparency. We gather reliable and ethical third-party verification of fashion brands, and we do not charge brands to be rated. Plus, it offers alternative recommendations from brands that have higher ratings and are sustainable based on what you're browsing๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘—

We've launched a private version in the Chrome app store for testing, featuring sustainability ratings for over 200 fashion brands. Now, we're developing an AI-powered recommendation algorithm to make the shopping experience even better๐ŸŒŸ

To keep you updated on our progress and launch details, we've opened up an email sign-up on our website. Our goal is to reach 5,000 sign-ups this summer to validate the market and gather valuable feedback from eco-conscious consumers like you๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’Œ

If you're interested in supporting sustainable fashion and our mission, please consider signing up with your email. Your help would mean the world to us๐Ÿ™
