Have this cool idea! Not sure about it and need help with product validation. Please help me out!!

Hello, all the beautiful people!

I have this idea of creating a sleek and modern men's wallet brand using a unique and unusual material. It's a leather alternative, NOT vegan leather nor vegetable-tanned leather. I did some market research, and I found some brands using this material to make men's wallets. Some brands use this material to create other fashion accessories such as women's bags, backpacks, shoes, belts, etc. (some make clothing out of it).

My question here is:

Does it mean I just stumbled upon a great opportunity since there are not a lot of competitors? Even though it isn't typical for now, I think it can be the next big thing. As an advocate of sustainability, I see that more people are starting to care about it. This makes me believe that the sustainable market will skyrocket (Ex: sustainable fashion is gaining popularity).

With that said, half of my gut is telling me that whatever I am wanting to do will work. But the other half of my gut is also telling me that it's something that I need to be careful of because it may also mean that the demand is not there.

Also, most of the sustainable brands target women. I found recent articles and researches mention that there is a discrepancy of sensitivity toward sustainability between men and women. Not that men don't care about sustainability, just that women tend to care more and get the most attention from marketers. With that said, will create a sustainable brand targets men a good idea or there is a lack of market share that makes it not worth doing?

What do you think? Would you be willing to pay $50 - $120 (approximately) for a wallet that is:

+ leather/vegan leather/vegetable-tanned leather alternative

+ ethically sourced, socially responsible and low environmental impact

+ 90% biodegradable (10% of the base material is not)

+ sustainable

+ PETA approved

I appreciate your honest feedback!

Sustainable streetwear made from surplus/leftover fabric from fast fashion factories.

Hello Everyone!

My sister and I have just launched a brand that makes streetwear fashion from the surplus fabrics!

This means-

  1. We use NO WATER or other resources to create new fabrics.
  2. We help reduce the impact of fast- fashion, especially cutting down on its fabric waste.
  3. And we get to create unique beautiful designs that use various fabrics and can only be produced in limited quantities for a limited time! (Slow fashion at its best)

Please give our website a scroll! We’ve added some pictures of the clothes, let us know what you think of the designs!

Making sustainable fashion more effective

Hey Designers! We're a startup from Estonia and we have been writing articles about sustainable fashion designers and why people should choose a more sustainable lifestyle for a year now.

But as time goes on, we've become more and more restless, because just writing about it doesn't have a big enough impact on people. So we want to further understand the problems that sustainable designers have, and start solving those issues. Here is a little survey, please fill out the form and feel free to give us feedback, if the questions are relevant enough for you or what should we focus on more.

Sustainable x Fair Trade x Ethical Bridal & Ceremonial Wear

Hey all! I am a designer based in Pittsburgh. In 2018, I designed the Wildwood collection for Celia Grace - a line of modern bridal wear made entirely of sustainable materials and deadstock fabrics. Now, in order to expand the legacy of fair trade bridal, I’m taking a big step in transforming the Celia Grace brand into my own brand, Bohyne. All of the pieces will follow the DNA of the Wildwood collection, designed here in Pittsburgh, sourced only from deadstock and sustainable fabrics, and crafted by our fair-trade-certified co-op based in Cambodia. Like most new brands, we’re still struggling to gain our footing to really take off and make waves in this industry. We'd really appreciate any interested in us and our vision, and hope you'll consider checking out our kickstarter to see the Wildwood collection and how you can help to support us locally in Pittsburgh and in Cambodia. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bohyne/bohyne-bridal-kickstarter

Looking for Women’s Boot Recommendations

I’m really in the market for a new pair of boots but I’m really struggling to find something that is sustainable, cute, and not outrageously expensive.

I really like the style of classic Dr. Marten boots and I’m looking to replace a pair of black faux leather combat boots that I bought long ago that are falling apart at this point. So basically just looking for a functional black lace up boot.

I’m willing to spend a bit more money especially for a sustainable brand I can support and assuming they’re going to last me a very long time, however I am a broke college student so I can’t afford to spend several hundred dollars on a pair of shoes.

Any recommendations to further my search would be greatly appreciated :)

London W11 cashmere leading the change from linear fashion to circular

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zJjL1fkods&t=6s

The London W11 Circular Cashmere capsule is the nexus of recycling and luxury - cashmere items that have a high level of design, versatility, made from fine recycled cashmere yarn that stands the test of time; the eco-conscious choice for feel-good fashion.

By backing the London W11 Circular Cashmere campaign, you are pre-ordering luxurious, timeless chic and long-living items, made in Italy from finest recycled pre-consumer cashmere yarn. The delivery will be in December in time for Christmas.

What is circular luxury and why does it matter?  London W11 is going circular as a first-mover:

  • Drastically reduce cashmere fibre waste in the fashion industry - currently, 12% of material is being thrown away during the manufacturing process;
  • Radically reduce the environmental impacts of producing new garments, by using 5x less dye (and therefore reducing water waste) per sweater, minimising transportation costs, and using ca. 25% of the Grade A virgin cashmere wool compared to a normal sweater, equivalent to saving the wool from 6-8 cashmere goats;
  • Combat the wasteful cycle of "seasonal" fashion by making durable products that last and never go out of style.

Circularity is the eco-conscious choice, the essence of sustainability.

Sustainable fashion research

Hi ladies of Reddit, wondering if you could help me out. I'm doing some research for a wonderful brand called BEEN London - turning waste into stunning accessories. Think leather offcuts and trimmings, plastic bottles and textile waste evolving into luxury items. This brand is truly amazing, by far the most sustainable brand I have ever seen.

My job (I'm an intern doing my university research) is to ask you about what kind of sustainable products you're looking for, what standards you have surrounding sustainability and to understand whether what we do resonates with you. The survey takes less than 5 mins and gives 15% off everything on the website. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Click here to take the survey!

If you'd like to know more obout the brand first you can check out the website www.been.london or ask me anything, I'm happy to answer!

Recycled plastic clothing is still plastic and still ends up in our oceans.

I've been seeing a lot of recycled plastic clothing and shoes being manufactured as a way to market a more sustainable approach to fashion.

This is barely a solution to the problem of plastics polluting our oceans. Recycled plastic isn't as bad as polyester but washing either of them creates microfibers.

It's sad to see because it's hard to distinguish companies that are trying to make a positive impact on the environment and those that are greenwashing the idea of recycled plastic to appeal to the increased demand for sustainable clothing.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents on the topic because after a few Google searches I could only find two articles saying this.

Sustainability: Fashion, Clothing & Shoes

I've been trying to research individual brands so I know where I should be shopping more at (this is a real struggle for me since every time I look up a specific brand, the first few hits tend to be reports from the companies, which tend to be stacked in their favour) this website published reports (with sources) and it honestly a dream for anyone who, like me, is addicted to researching brands. They also do rankings of cosmetic brands, electronics, and some other services (mostly in Europe). This website is a permanent bookmark for me now.
