The most sustainable fashion

Is not your startup.

It’s not making new clothing.

This sub is all about consumerist nonsense. That’s not sustainable. Reduce and reuse first. Quit buying more things. Quit creating new brands and startups. Where are all the repair posts? The cool thrift finds? The upcycling? All this sub is is posts about yet another brand that’s making new clothing. That’s the problem.

Celebrities wearing Sustainable Dresses on the Red Carpet - Does it actually help promote Sustainable Fashion?

Here's a roundup of celebrities who wore vintage/archival or more sustainable gowns at the Oscars: https://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/gallery/vintage-trend-oscars-2023

With the idea of needing new dresses for every event being such an unsustainable part of these award shows, I wonder if celebrities wearing a vintage or more sustainably sourced gown actually has any impact on people's awareness of sustainable fashion. Thoughts?

The Top 10 Most Sustainable ESG Companies in 2023 - USA

With the world becoming more environmentally conscious, eco-friendly companies are experiencing increased success.

As per the latest trends, customers are making purchases prioritizing environmental impact. Their decision to work with companies that share a commitment to environmental protection comes at a time when the option is becoming increasingly obvious. It can be difficult to distinguish between companies that are legitimately eco-friendly and the ones that are simply hopping on the environmental bandwagon and gradually labeling themselves ‘eco-friendly.’

Given the gravity of the current climate crisis, it is critical for businesses to maintain high environmental expectations and applaud businesses that continue to prioritize and work at the forefront of environmental innovation. We all know that ‘eco-friendly’ means a lot more than simply not harming the climate. Environmental consciousness is woven into every part of the company’s brand for genuinely eco-friendly businesses.

Environmentally friendly companies not only produce products that are sustainable and sourced ethically, but they also follow environmentally friendly manufacturing and production methods. Environmentally friendly companies are also working to fully change the landscape of businesses’ involvement and responsibility in environmental protection.

In their battle against climate change, Eco-friendly companies go beyond their products. In addition to engraining sustainability within their core business functions, they also work to protect the environment by advocating for sustainable policies, raising environmental consciousness and encouraging local involvement in conservation efforts, collaborating with other campaigns and groups, and more.

To identify the best of these companies, we have factored in parameters on how innovative their technology is or how sustainable their operational practices are.

How to drive Sustainable Revenue with Product-led Growth

While the pandemic turned out to be an economic boon for many organizations, it radically shifted consumer behavior. Due to this reason, in the last few years, companies including Zoom, Slack, Shopify, and Netflix perfectly positioned themselves for this transition, and many even experienced hypergrowth as a result.

These services were well-prepared to take advantage of the shift to remote work and other online activities. But one component that Zoom, Slack, and Netflix share is a common focus on product-led growth, referred to as PLG. These players were able to experience hypergrowth during the pandemic by providing their consumers with exceptional product experiences. They were able to identify the rapidly changing environment and meet customers' needs.

By focusing on product-led growth (PLG), these organizations were able to endure the challenges and emerge as leaders in their respective industries. This strategy is aimed at providing organizations with a path for sustained revenue growth while offering consumers an exceptional product experience and engagement. Let's have a closer look at the three Ws of customer engagement:

Who: The customer affiliates that need to be engaged or retained

What: The type of communication that must be sent

10 Lessons from my no-buy year

In 2021, when I was getting ready for a move, I made an inventory of everything I owned. Then, in early 2022, I began tracking every time I wore an item. I wanted to understand which pieces were providing the best value. My makeshift spreadsheet grew — I became an excel aficionado and built pivot tables and graphs to help me understand which colours and styles I gravitated towards. I used the data I collected to come up with new ways of wearing my favourite pieces, and to make decisions on what I wanted to keep and what to part ways with.

This isn’t easy to say, but I have over 300 items of clothing, including accessories, bags and shoes but excluding formalwear. 304 to be exact. Embarrassingly, there are 66 items I have not worn a single time since I began tracking. So in May of 2022, I decided I would not buy clothing for at least a year.

I have cheated twice: I bought a part of pants at a thrift store in Paris in August, and I bought ski clothes for a trip in February because I had nothing weather appropriate. I also received a handbag from my partner’s sister for Christmas, and my dad bought me a skirt. Oh, and my partner surprised me with a new pair of Hoka sneakers because the ones I was wearing were in truly terrible shape.

Now, I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned about myself, and the ways that I have benefited from going through this process.

  1. I’ll start with the most obvious benefit: I have saved a lot of money.
  2. The first few months were easy and exciting, then I hit a rut at around the 7 month mark. I struggled to feel inspired by what I saw in my closet, so I decided to put most of my clothing into storage containers for a couple of months. Now, I shop my own closet around once every two weeks.
  3. I have gotten more creative and taken more risks: I have made an effort to wear pieces I don’t normally gravitate towards. I’ve fallen in love with pieces I’d all but forgotten about. Some of my experiments have been less successful than others, but this process has helped me make decisions on which items to keep and what to part ways with when I move again in a couple of months.
  4. In the past, I would often get lazy and buy something new for special events, or when I wasn’t feeling inspired. I now know that realistically, baring my first ski trip in over a decade, I have clothing to suit any imaginable occasion. When I start shopping again, I will avoid single occasion shopping and focus on pieces that fit into my wardrobe in as many ways as possible.
  5. I wear my black clothing disproportionally often. Just over 20% of the clothes I own are black, but I wear these items almost 30% of the time. Same goes for white, which makes up under 10% of my closet but around 15% of my wears. Also, I seem to really love purple!
  6. I love collecting vintage pieces, but I don’t wear them as much as I’d like. 15% of my closet is vintage (over 20 years old), but I only wear these pieces around 7% of the time.
  7. I’ve seen beautiful pieces online and in person. I have felt sad when an item I loved sells out, but overall, it’s been fine. I will confess that I feel significant FOMO over a pair of high heeled green croc embossed Paris Texas boots that are on sale at SSENSE. There is one pair left in my size, and I am praying they are still available when my no-buy year is over.
  8. A little bit of tailoring is a wonderful cure. Items that I hadn’t worn in years feel fresh again, and I love that I have given some of the clothing I inherited from my mother a new life.
  9. Cleaning out my closet gives me a similar thrill to buying new things. I’ve sold, donated, gifted, or recycled a good number of pieces. I always feel recharged after I do, and the high lasts longer than the post-purchase bliss I used to feel.
  10. I have a much better sense of my personal style now. I am less tempted by trends, and I have been able to find inspiration in all sorts of places and make things work with what I already own. I know that when I start shopping again, I will be able to make much more conscious choices.

All in all, I have really loved this adventure. I am definitely buying those green Paris Texas boots first thing in the morning on May 11, but after that, I will wait until there is an item that inspires me the way that pair of shoes does. And then I’ll sleep on it. And then I probably won’t buy it at all.

I was thinking about trying to combine technical fabrics to deal with sweat

When looking online for solutions to dealing with sweat I wasn’t able to find a perfect solution to the problem. There are of course many different kinds of technical fabrics but all have their strengths and weaknesses. I was thinking about combining the odor resistant qualities of merino wool with the moisture wicking qualities of polyester. Are there any products that exist like this? This was a rough sketch of the basic idea in blue is where the wool will be and the white will be where the polyester is.

Is making clothes by yourself for sale bad for the environment?

I've always been avidly against fast fashion and generally avoid buying clothes unless I absolutely need them. Because of that, I've even been hesitant to start making merch for my band, although I'm not sure of the effects that could have on the environment.

Today, my girlfriend told me that she was thinking about designing and selling her own clothes to make some money and asked my opinion on that. I'd personally never do that for the above reasons, but then again, I might be somewhat biased because I don't like fashion very much. However, I want to support her, so I wanted to ask if anybody could tell if making your own clothes is bad for the environment in any way.

Would you agree that there are too many "sustainable" clothing brands and not enough upcycling clothing brands?

I feel like everyone wants to create a clothing brand and put the word "sustainable" on it!

But eventually, it will defeat the purpose of being sustainable as there will be even more clothing being made. I feel like there needs to be more reworked and upcycled clothing brands as they use the textiles that have already been made.

Would you agree or do you feel that just being "sustainable" is enough?

Would you pay to attend a clothing swap?

I am working to plan a clothing swap in my city and wondering if this is something that you would be willing to pay to attend? The event will include:

  • Very cool location with city views
  • Photographer onsite taking pictures/portraits & free access to photos after
  • Wine & non-alcoholic seltzers to enjoy (free drinks with ticket)
  • Ability to swap clothing with other women AND have photo taken in clothing that's not swapped to resell

Would you be willing to pay for an event like this? If so, how much?

(Note - my goal would be to keep this affordable but cover some of my costs so that if it goes well I can host these consistently, not looking to make a profit!)

I know this isn't the ideal place, but I'm having trouble getting responses for my survey. So far, I've only got 3 out of the 100 needed. I hope that some of you can take 3 minutes to answer it (I promise, it won't take any longer!) The survey is, of course, anonymous:

uneducated "sustainable" influencers

One of the things that bothers me the most about the sustainable fashion space is how little some influencers actually know (I've worked in fashion factories for over 13 years) and some of the stuff they are saying is just so far from reality. I get that they want to help - but I think they need to educate themselves before they start educating others.

To try and be part of the solution, I am creating a series of articles to educate people on how factories really operate. Because to change a system, people first need to understand the system.

This first one breaks down the 7 step process that transforms raw materials into a finished garment inside the factory.https://virtue-vice.myshopify.com/blogs/news/how-clothes-are-made-clothing-factory-tour

What other wrong information have you seen? What should my next article be about?

100% Wool Jacket Recommendations?

I am trying to find a 100% wool jacket. The issue is that all the jackets I have found are always a blend of acrylic, nylon, or polyester in addition to the wool. Even premium brands have are a mixed of wool and some other non-sustainable fiber.

Are there any brands that sell 100% wool jackets or at least the shell is 100% wool?

The only brand I can find is Norwegian Wool, but the only sell heavy wool coats. I am looking for black/navy coat that will hit a mid thigh, but at this point I would take any natural fiber (like 100% cotton) and length coat. And that can be worn in fall and early spring not just winter.

Planet-friendly seamless undies at a fair price

I definitely prefer sustainable, ethical brands over mass-market, but frequently find them too overpriced. And I think some of the brands take advantage of sustainability to make extra margins.

A little while ago I decided to change that by launching my own affordable brand of women's intimates, because there isn't an item more universal and ubiquitous than that.

My crowdfunding campaign for seamless women's undies in about to conclude in just a few days. Don't miss your chance to back and get no-show planet-friendly undies at a fraction of price of other brands.

Go here to pledge if you are interested, and let me know if you have any feedback.

Sustainable outfit planning app

Hello everyone!

I've been working on a concept design for a mobile app - Wardrobe Planner. The goal of this app would be to streamline the outfit planning process.

Inside the app, users could see their wardrobe, plan and schedule outfits, review statistics about their outfits and clothes, shoes, etc. The interface is simple and user-friendly and the app promotes sustainable fashion in several ways: viewing the items in the wardrobe has 'window shopping' feel, care instructions can be saved under each item, and there is also a blog like section for tips on how to care for clothes.

What do you think? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Whats your sustainable approach to footwear?

I typically invest in a few good pairs of shoes and just wear those: leather boots that get resoled and retreaded, gym shoes that get an insole after a while and are worn until falling apart, and birkinstock sandals

None of these are foolproof tho, and i typically wear thru at least one pair of crappy dollar flip-flops

How do you go about your shoes in relation to sustainability?

We focus on creating garments and accessories from discarded fabric and scraps. The waste is sourced from colthing units nearby and processed in our unit by our team of 10 superheros.

Would love to get some feeback on our products from the community here.

Look forward to contributing more towards sustainable fashion 😊

Newbie on this topic - does the brand Life is Good make the list/ check off the right boxes?

REALLY HOPE a mod doesnt delete this post for whatever reason.

I am new to the world of trying to buy clothes that arent going to negatively impact the enviornment (specifically related to wildlife) and when I say I am new to this world I mean last night I was deeply thinking about this issue and my love for animals and how I wanted to be more aware of the choices I make going forward. I have stumbled upon posts in the past talking about clothing companies maybe being alright in terms of environmentally responsible, but still lacking with this or that OR saying one thing but doing something else that really isnt helpful (maybe like not being fully transparent with the making of their clothing items).

For those of you that are pretty knowledgable about sustainable/ethical/environmentally responsible clothing, does the brand Life is Good check all right boxes/ make the list as a good company to buy from? Here is a link specifically related to this topic (but would still greatly appreciate it if someone reading this could verify/confirm that its good). https://www.lifeisgood.com/security/social-responsibility.html

Thank you in advance! :)

Great Deal On Kids Tees

Kids grow like weeds and obviously the most sustainable option is secondhand BUT if you must buy new, these shirts are made with recycled plastic by a fair trade company.

This shirt has a small carbon footprint because the fabric was made in South Carolina of US materials, the cutting and sewing is done in Haiti, and then the offices, warehouse, and printshop are in Kansas City, MO. The average shirt travels the world 6x in it's manufacturing process which has a LARGE impact on the environment, but this supply chain is only 2700 miles and are made by a Fair Trade company! Sustainable AND Ethical!

(They have adult basics that are also reasonably priced but fair trade shirts for $8 blew my mind)

Influence of viscose/rayon on the water ways?

It’s a chemically treated Product and kind of man made . I was wondering how bad it is on our water ways if it’s chemically treated, would chemicals get into the oceans when it’s washed? Or has it no longer got chemicals in it?

Hi! New to Reddit/this sub

I'm nearing the end of my no buy year and I'm in real need of new underwear and want to get stuff that's cute, functional, and sustainable. I've looked at Parade but in terms of a bra, I want something a little more structured and lacy.

Excited to hear all your recs! Thank you in advance!

Educative post "How to take care of your denim" Help

I'm trying to create an educative post for my small business.
In this post i want to talk about how to take care of Denim, wash it properly and make sure it looks fresh for the longest time possible.
In my project i talk a lot about slow fashion and it's benefits for the environment, but i wanted to ask textile connoisseurs about how they handle their denim, and what they would advice people to do in that situation.

Looking for a dupe of these jeans...

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a rudy jude dupe (link posted below). Mainly because I'm short-waisted so I can't wear a 12.5" rise that these jeans have. Mainly interested in the extremely dark wash with contrast white stitching, with good quality fabric. I'd be soooo grateful if someone had any leads!

Are there Sustainable Fashion Branks in India for Men?

Could you provide some suggestions for sustainable fashion brands in India that offer clothing options for men? I am interested in finding brands that prioritize ethical and environmentally conscious practices throughout their supply chain and production processes. It would be helpful to have a few different options to choose from.

Sustainable Brands for Young/ Gen Z Women?

I've searched for sustainable fashion brands and although they do exist, a lot of them look like they're for 35 year old milennial women 😂 (no shade). Do y'all know any sustainable/ less evil fashion brands for young women? Like alternatives to Pac Sun, Zumiez, ect.

Why Brands Struggle to Scale Sustainable Initiatives🌍

Today more and more consumers are demanding businesses take up sustainable initiatives. This has led "sustainability" to become somewhat of a buzzword, but it's so much more than that. Sustainability is essentially a mindset.

However, not all have been successful in their marketing strategies. In fact, many have made significant mistakes that have hindered their growth and reach.

Most companies working on such projects ignore a major flaw in their marketing. The inability to explain their vision and process in a simple manner. A lot of them have novel and complex processes that are difficult to understand for a layman.

Some great examples can be companies working on projects like recycling, carbon offsets or maybe even technical topics like bioprinting and ocean alkalinity enhancement. Thus they struggle to communicate their message in a way that resonates with consumers.

This lack of clarity can lead to confusion and mistrust among consumers. They may feel that the company is not being transparent or that its claims are not genuine. As a result, companies may struggle to raise awareness, build a loyal customer base or attract new customers. And while they start out with a goal to create impact towards a cause, most don’t go far.

The best way to create a significant impact is to grow your company. And to grow your company you need to sell more, and to sell more, more people need to understand exactly what you sell.

Companies should focus on simplifying their message. This can be achieved by using clear, concise language and avoiding overly technical jargon.

The first step in achieving this is being aware of the ins and outs of your industry. Reading the news and networking are the best ways for this. You can't explain what you don't understand yourself.

A great exercise to create digestible content is by using the Hemingway Editor. Take your overall message, paste it onto the Hemingway editor and keep simplifying it till you reach a 5th-grade reading level. Keep tweaking it till you can maintain that reading level and clearly convey your idea.

Companies can also use visual aids such as infographics or videos to communicate. This helps explain their vision and process in a more engaging and accessible way.

Prioritise communicating your ideas in a simple and accessible manner. By doing just this one thing, you can overcome most marketing challenges. You'll get more customers, they'll trust you more and you will create the impact you want.

Sustainable Men's dress shirt for a wedding - UK based

Hey guys - took myself on a bit of a search for a men's dress shirt (e.g white shirt that could be worn with a suit for a wedding) that had some ethical, sustainable credentials.

Ideally it's less than £60 and can be bought and shipped to the UK.

Any ideas? Seems like a niche no brand is really going for. My other option is to just buy a secondhand/unused shirt from ebay or similar.

Looking for a new pair of green corduroy pants, any recommendations?

Female, 5’10”, size 6 or 28 approx. The ones I have from Urban Outfitters are now too small but I love them, so I really want to replace them with something higher quality / longer lasting.
