Do certifications hold weight, or should we become sustainability detectives?

Hey guys! When was the last time you checked for sustainability certifications while buying a product? I am currently torn between two brands to get a hoodie, one of which has a Leaping Bunny certification, and the other brand on which I have first-hand knowledge of amazing behind-the-scenes sustainability practices.

I think that certifications might be helpful to see a company's efforts, but they often paint an incomplete picture. They might showcase responsible waste management within the company itself, but what about their supply chain, sourcing, energy usage? There’s just so much we don’t know.

Certifications are like colorful banners at a carnival that draw attention away from the true condition of the building behind them.

What do you think? would you trust the brand with the certifications or do your own research?

Opinions on nylon?

I see it worked into some things, usually in smaller amounts (<10%). Haven't heard anything bad but also haven't heard anything good either. I'm just not sure what to make of it, whether I should be avoiding it or not.

Small businesses who just resell off of Aliexpress drive me crazy

It’s shocking and sad how many of them there are, and i feel like it’s a bit misleading because the second someone sees “small business” they assume ethically made. I know that’s not true but i wish more people did. Or maybe they know and don’t care.

I just came across a tiktok of this girl going “my heart breaks a little when i hear ‘i spent $100 on one bikini’ when my small biz has $40 super cute bikinis for the whole set”

And everyone left a million comments being like JUST BOUGHT ONE OMG. The brand took their own photos but i just looked up “pink bikini” on Aliexpress and immediately found one of their exact designs. The price didn’t sit right w me, sustainable brands usually are at least $90-$100 for the top and bottom separately.

I’m sure you guys are already aware of this, being on the sustainability subreddit and all, but BUYER BEWARE if they don’t have an about page that states very clearly where their products are made, even if they do, i always search. To me, brands like this are such a waste of space.

I am getting frustrated.

I lost 65 lbs, and I look pretty good. I have a natural hourglass shape, and I would like to show it off a bit.

But I have only been buying used pieces of clothing that is made from linen, cotton, hemp, wool, or silk so I don't shed micropastics. I also like the breathability of natural fabrics.

However everything is loose on me, and I want somehthing with that tightness, so I can show off my figure. It seems you can only get that look with synthetic fabrics? I hate that I have to choose. Is there some way I can do both natural and figure flattering? I know this sounds shallow, but I am only young once, and I worked really hard for my body.

Sustainability in Fashion - Hot Takes Only

Hi reddit!

I've gone down a rabbit-hole the last few weeks. I'm currently responsible for our company's social media content (among many other things...) and wanted to compile a few hot takes about sustainable fashion and your overall stance on sustainability in fashion for a potential post.

Please share them in the comments below (can be about green-washing, sustainability in fast-fashion, sustainability in luxury fashion, anything that falls in this category!).

Go wild, be respectful, discuss if you wish, I'm just really curious to see what people that are into fashion think! :)

Seeking Feedback on Sustainable Product Recommendations

Hey everyone, I'm currently fine-tuning this platform which provides sustainable options backed by thorough sustainability research. The platform can be more clear about its recommendations. If you can share your views on these questions that would be really helpful to make it better:

First, do you find the pricing information on the page effectively explains why some sustainable products might be priced higher than their market price? Additionally, when it comes to product details, are there specific pieces of information you'd like to see more of or feel are missing? Is there anything about the overall design that you find confusing or unclear?

I'm at the stage where any feedback is incredibly valuable. Even if it's just a hunch or a suggestion, please share it! Thanks in advance for your time and insights!

talk to me about Bamboo Viscose

I have been searching for an alternative to polyester for business casual work clothing. I tried silk but it is just too fussy - wrinkles really easily and can't be put in the dryer. Recently I've seen a lot of ads for "sustainable bamboo viscose" clothing. My shallow dive research says it isn't really awesome, but maybe still better than polyester? My main approach to sustainable fashion is to buy less and keep things for as long as possible, but I'm also trying to avoid polyester going forward, and looking for alternatives in that business casual category. It absolute has to be something that is low maintenance though - I have little kids and there just isn't time in my life to hand wash or iron stuff.

Rain Sisters, worth the money, or am I falling for a social media advertising scam?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any experience buying from, or knowledge of the company, Rain Sisters? As I understand it, they are a slow fashion company making raincoats, based in Latvia. Their beautiful coats are all over my instagram, and I have fallen in love.

They are very expensive, but, all their SM branding stresses the fact that they are a small, sustainable company committed to good environmental and human practises, and so if this is true, I would be willing to shell out.

TrustPilot has glowing reviews of them, but before I take the plunge and drop £250 on a coat, I was hoping someone here might be able to reassure me that they are a legit company, not a giant waste of money? OR to save me from falling for glossy social media and wasting all my birthday money ......

Thank you so muc!

Do cotton running jackets even exist?

I'm on the hunt for a running/workout jacket similar to the Lululemon Define jacket (specifically with the zippered pockets and thumb holes in the sleeves) but ideally made of natural fibers.

I have an old cotton-poly athletic jacket I got from Kohl's years ago that mostly fits the bill, but it doesn't have the zippered pockets so my phone constantly slides out when I wear it out on my runs.

I hate the way synthetics feel on my skin when I'm working out so I'm looking for something like the Lululemon jacket but (at least mostly) natural fibers. Does anyone know if this even exists?

It seems like most of the search results I've gotten are just 100% plastic jackets which I'd like to avoid.

Need Mindful Consumption Tips for Fashion Freedom

Hey there,

I've been doing some serious self-reflection lately about my shopping habits, especially when it comes to fashion. It's a constant battle between wanting to stay updated with the latest trends I see on social media and being mindful about my consumption. Honestly, it feels like I'm stuck in this cycle of fashion consumerism, and I'm really trying to break free from it.

I know I'm not alone in this struggle, so I want to know, How do you manage to stick to your commitment of mindful consumption? What motivates you to resist the temptation of impulse buying and fast fashion trends?

I'm not sure if Sustainable Shopping is just a myth or something practical that I can incorporate into my lifestyle. Can anyone share their experiences with sustainable shopping and how it has helped them navigate the challenges of fashion consumerism?

Can we have an open discussion about finding balance in our consumption habits and exploring alternatives that align with our values. Your insights could really make a difference in how I approach my own journey towards mindful consumption.

Thank you.

What types of materials are the most desired as Eco-Friendly for consumers?

Do you prefer comfort over tight looks?

What type of styles are missing from Eco-Friendly brands?

Would you like to see more workout wear?

Would we like to see more comfortable lounge wear ?

What is the typical price one is willing to pay for good top or bottoms ?

I’m currently a senior in high school and am wondering if I should go to FIT for their textile development and marketing program because I’m interested and in researching and developing sustainable textiles and materials or should I go for a more technical degree first like engineering and then look into the program after, considering I will have developed my STEM based skills more ??

Sustainable stores at the mall?

I’ve been trying to shop more sustainably, but when I look up information about sustainable brands, they’re almost always online stores. The only brand I know that I’ve found is Patagonia (which I do love). I prefer to shop in person and plan to go to the mall soon — what stores and brands that are in person would you recommend?

Beyond Buzzwords, What does true sustainability transparency look like for Brands?

For a long time, I've been exploring many ethical and sustainable brands across different product categories. And I know people like me often struggle to grasp the true impact of their sustainable practices because these benefits can be abstract. With so many sustainability claims thrown around alongside product details, this information overload makes it so difficult to distinguish genuine efforts from marketing jargon.

That is why I wan to ask this question to small sustainable brands: How do you educate your customers in clear, concise, and engaging ways about your practices to gain trust and secure your position in this space where greenwashing has become an easiest way to make profits for most of the brands?

What clothing brands would you like to see become more eco friendly?

I'm looking to engage with fashion brands about enhancing the affordability and sustainability of their clothing lines. I'm curious to know which brands are at the top of people's wish lists for becoming more eco-friendly. I'll personally reach out to those mentioned in the comments to explore potential partnerships.

In my recent role with a sustainable textile company, we've achieved impressive results. For instance, we've drastically reduced the manufacturing time for jeans from 5 months to under 1 month. Additionally, our processes use 94% less water, 81% fewer chemicals, and 40% less energy, all while lowering manufacturing costs. Furthermore, we have the capability to sustainably produce a variety of apparel items, including shirts, sportswear, and various types of fabric.

Sustainable Apparel Idea - Tell me what you think!

Hey everyone, so I have long been underwhelmed with what the sustainable streetwear apparel brands in Australia offer. As a consumer I just want to buy stuff thats comfy, is actually sustainable and has cool designs and illustrations at reasonable prices.

I have decided to try and create something myself, so have created a page about what we want to build, you can check it out here:

If you like the sound of what we are offering you can join the waitlist to be kept up to date when we launch our first products.

Need beta users for new anti-dropshipper clothing swap + resale site

Hi all. Apologies if not allowed, but I thought this would be of interest to this community.

I've always loved shop secondhand, but have been deceived many times now by dropshippers whom now plague pretty much every resale site, absolutely defeating their supposed purpose but getting away with it because the sites still get a cut of the scam.

I decided to design a moderated platform that creates unique barriers to dropshippers + highlights clothing swaps as an option by making it more seamless than I've seen on any other site thus far. This is all in an interest in truly ethical, sustainable, and circular fashion choices.

For sales involving money, I'll charge a platform fee of 9.5% on sale subtotals; however I'd like to offer you 0 seller fees for as many items as you can list between now and the end of the month (April 30th). This will be in exchange for the understanding that there may be kinks and hiccups to smooth out in the next little while, and that I may have to contact you if I run into any issues (any money you might spend on an item will always be safe, though.)

If interested, please request membership at https://tradeu.shop. I will not accept too many users for the time being, but will slowly scale up as potential bugs are all successfully worked through. I truly appreciate anyone up to help me out with this, as it's something I'm really passionate about!

I am Launching a Sustainable Activewear Brand

Hi Everyone!
I have been working on a sustainable activewear brand for a while and finally launched it. The website still needs a lot of improvements but it is up and running. Please check it and let me know your feedback so I can improve it to make it more transparent and ethical.

https://truenorth.eco/

If you want to try any products, I created a discount code for Reddit users. You can use REDDIT30 to get a 30% discount on your first order.

My goal was to create a brand that uses only sustainable materials and produces everything in a small circle to reduce carbon footprint. We only used organic natural yarns and Lenzing yarns. The main product group is made out of Organic Cotton and Recycled Elastane. Some Lenzing yarns come with a small percentage of polyester and elastane that are not recycled. I listed all the materials we use in the descriptions.

All products are made in Turkey in a factory specialized in sustainable production. I am planning to add more details to make everything transparent. Please feel free to tell me what else you would like to see so I can do better.

Seeking Sustainable and Ethical Brands that are transparent

Hi friends!

I hope this is okay to post here! TUTT [Tell.Us.The.Truth] is an ethical and sustainable apparel marketplace visualizing the supply chain with our apparel nutrition facts so that the average consumer can understand what to look for (just like in food)!

We are featuring brands that are "doing it right" that meet what we deem our clean quality standards (only natural fibres except lenzing modal for semi synthetics and less than 10% elastane in anything new).

We are launching our strategic pilot and need brands that fit the bill! If anyone knows of a contact at a brand that I can reach out to and help promote as part of our efforts please have them reach out or get in touch!

DM me if interested. We are also championing upcylists and made to order brands to support microentrepreneurs and slow intentional fashion!

Ethical & Sustainable Clothing Boutique available

After 10 years I'm ready to pass the torch on my ethical and sustainable clothing boutique in Denver. It's officially for sale. :)

I'm excited for this to be a total blessing to someone who wants to transform it into their own. It's award winning, has incredible, dedicated customers, is extremely cute lol, and located in a high traffic/high tourism arts district.

Without putting too much on reddit, I would love to provide more info for anyone interested.

need help finding ethical/eco-friendly foam bra cups/inserts and thread-> for making swimwear

hey! my friend and I are making eco-friendly swimwear, but got stumped with bra inserts and thread. we definitely want to use a polyester thread or something sturdy (it needs to last in the water), but were having trouble finding a recycled PET option or something similar. we've been struggling especially with the bra inserts, and are trying to find something that's possibly a recycled nylon or polyester- but anything works as long as it's better than what tends to be the non-ethical and non-eco-friendly standard! We also want ethical brands, but pls mention any regardless of their ethical status- even if a company isn't ethical, I'll totally fall down the rabbit hole and find similar options that ARE lol (dw we won't use them if they aren't). if anyone has any suggestions pls let us know! thanks! :)

Men's activeware made from natural materials?

I am looking for some men's workout tops that are made from natural materials like cotton or made from recycled materials or a cotton/recycled-poly blend.

How to start a career or connect with people who work in sustainable fashion?

I’m really interested in this and currently looking at options to contribute to making the fashion world more sustainable and especially promoting vegan and cruelty free fashion/leather. Now I would love to talk to people who are working in this space or interested in this too

Sustainable outfit rater app

I have been brainstorming a fashion app concept called CrowdStyler, and I'm super curious to hear your thoughts!

The Problem: Fast fashion is a major bummer for the environment, but putting together cute outfits without constantly buying new stuff can be tough.

The Solution: CrowdStyler is your one-stop shop for creating sustainable looks! Here's the lowdown:

  • Digital Closet: Snap pics of your clothes, shoes, accessories – the whole shebang! Organize them by category for easy outfit building.
  • Mix & Match Magic: Drag and drop your wardrobe pieces to create endless outfit combos. Get inspiration from other users or curate your own style.
  • Sustainability Scorecard: See the environmental impact of your wardrobe (think materials, washing habits). The app will even suggest ways to extend the life of your clothes!
  • Community Inspiration: Stuck in a style rut? Get feedback and suggestions from other eco-conscious fashionistas!

Bonus Features:

  • Thrifting Tips & Tricks: Learn how to score amazing finds at second-hand stores and breathe new life into pre-loved clothes.
  • Care Companion: Never forget how to wash your delicates again! Store care instructions for each item in your digital closet.

What do you think? Is CrowdStyler something you'd download? Would you add any other features to make it even more eco-friendly and stylish?

Any brand recommendations like Lazy Oaf but EU located?

Been trying to look for new brands like Lazy oaf, Kina & Tam, the ragged priest, etc. I love Lazy Oaf but don’t want to pay the import taxes, so any tips are welcome!

Sustainable fashion survey

Hi all! My team and I have to question a broad number of people as part of our UX/UI course assignment. The anonymous questionnaire is for study purposes only and all who take part in it would greatly help us to gather information on eco-conscious people's shopping habits.

Shoes made of wool?

Hi, I am a fashion student and I’m working on a marketing project about sustainably made running shoes by Circle Sportswear (French sustainable sportswear brand) and The Woolmark Company. If you could please spare a few minutes and fill it out, it would be a huge help. Thanks.

WAYWT Sustainable Edition

The workweek has started. Show off your sustainable Monday fit.

Share a bit about why your fit is sustainable.

This is a judgment-free zone. We all know sustainability in fashion is nuanced and complicated, so don't sweat it. For example, your polyester shirt may not be "eco-friendly" but if you've had it a long time, wear it a lot, and plan to keep it a long time then it's about as sustainable as you can get simply by how your wear it.

Let's celebrate the different approaches people and brands take to address our common goal.
