How harmful can returns be?

We’re going to take a wild guess and assume that at one point in your life you've avoided scouring shop rails and instead ordered a few potential outfits online with the intention to only keep your favourites. And why wouldn’t you? Online shopping means you don't have to leave your bed, you can quickly filter your search, you can pay in instalments and, more often than not, returning clothes is easy and free. There are no downsides! Or so we thought…

The bad news is all the transportation of these returned products will release greenhouse gases and quite often, your returns will simply then be put in landfill. Shocking! This is because it often costs a company more to process your return than the product is worth, so even if the product is brand new and unworn it will simply be thrown away in a non-sustainable fashion. It is estimated that ‘5 billion pounds of waste is generated through returns each year, contributing 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.’

It might be worth considering what you buy carefully, checking sizing charts to avoid having to order multiple sizes to try or taking a trip to the shops and trying before you buy (once it is considered safe to do so when Coronavirus is less of a threat). Or try buying second hand products where it is less likely that the seller will dispose of an item if you return it. Try Depop! Or try shopping with smaller businesses that offer slow fashion and who are open about how they handle returns.

Here at Miskie we are trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible! If you are unhappy with your bralette purchase you can return it unworn, and with the labels still attached, for it to be re-sold to another valued Miskie customer. Due to hygiene reasons we do not accept returns of our panties unless they are faulty and then we send them, as well as any other faulty items, to be recycled by a third party. So there’s no reason not to take a chance on some of our products!
