Why I Switched to Small-Batch Cotton Clothing

I’ve been slowly moving away from fast fashion and one discovery that made a real difference for me is The Good Artisan. They create small-batch clothing using natural fabrics like cotton and cotton-linen, handcrafted by local artisans in India.

What I’ve loved so far:

• The clothes actually breathe (especially important during long days).
• Pockets in pants and kurtas that are actually functional.
• Their cotton slips - game-changer for wearing under festive outfits without feeling suffocated.
• Everything is made in small batches, so no overproduction or waste.

For me, this feels like conscious shopping that’s good for both my wardrobe and the planet.

Just finished making these hand-printed bandana – what do you think?

I’ve been experimenting with hand block printing lately, and here’s one of my latest pieces – a cotton bandana with traditional patterns.

Each design is stamped by hand using carved wooden blocks, so no two come out exactly the same. It’s a slow process, but honestly very calming and rewarding.

I’m curious – do you guys prefer bold, colorful prints for bandanas, or more minimal neutral styles?

Need advice on how to grow my mom’s Etsy brand (handmade futuristic dresses)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on how to help my mom’s Etsy shop take off.
It’s always been her dream to have an online store: she makes every single dress by hand, sewing and embroidering them herself. She’s even using a very unique and expensive fiber optic fabric to give them a futuristic look.

She has over 40 years of experience in the field, so the craftsmanship is there. The problem is, I don’t have much experience when it comes to growing an online brand.
I’m wondering if maybe:

• the niche is too unusual,
• the prices are too high,
• I’m doing SEO wrong,
• or maybe people just don’t like this type of product.

I don’t want to spam (the shop is called TechFashionStore on Etsy), but I’d really love some practical advice on how to improve things.

What I learned turning a personal struggle into a sustainable fashion brand

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a personal story that shaped the way I think about fashion and sustainability, and maybe it resonates with some of you here who care about conscious living and fashion.

I grew up in India, where leftover fabric scraps were never waste — they became doll clothes, patchwork, or something creative. It was my first taste of what people today might call slow fashion. Years later, during my pregnancy in the Netherlands, my skin became ultra-sensitive. Suddenly, I realized how much the fabrics we wear affect our health, comfort, and even confidence.

That moment changed everything. It’s how MOH MODE was born. “moh” means love in Hindi. For me, it’s about love for the planet, for people, and for the clothes we live our lives in.

At MOH MODE, I started small, creating with natural fabrics like hemp and organic cotton, collaborating with artisans, and avoiding waste wherever possible. Over time, it grew into something bigger than I expected: a curated marketplace where independent sustainable designers from around the world could connect with people who care about craftsmanship, ethics, and circular fashion.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way that might help anyone starting something new:

• Listen to your pain points — mine was my skin sensitivity, which led to a solution others also needed.
• Start with what you have — scraps became my training ground for creativity.
• Build with community — every artisan, pop-up store, and conversation shaped this journey more than spreadsheets ever could.
  

Now, MOH MODE isn’t just online. We’re present at pop-ups and ethical markets across Europe, building real-world connections with conscious consumers who want fashion to feel good — inside and out.

Where to natural fibre clothing for cheap in New Zealadn

Title.

I am in NZ and looking to buy more 100% natural fibre clothing. More for my own sanity and health than anything. I don’t want to worry that what I’m wearing is slowly killing me or having detrimental effects.

I’m price conscious, I don’t care about where it’s made just how and with what material. I’m fine with Temu finds, or shien, or any website that connects directly to the factory.

The way I see it there have to be sellers out there selling the same products for close to what the stores pay for them before the retail markup.

Best sustainable fabrics for hoodies with a good fall that retains shape (Ontario)?

I recently moved to Ontario and I am trying to figure out the best sustainable fabrics for hoodies. I want something eco friendly but also with a nice fall on the body that still retains its shape, not too stiff and not too flimsy. Durability and warmth matter too with the winters here.

I have been looking at organic cotton, hemp, Tencel, and recycled blends, but I am not sure which actually drape well while staying sustainable.

I am also open to brand suggestions if you have favorites that match these qualities.

Sustainable underwear/socks/basics

Hi all! Thank you for all of your replies to my last post. In light of doing the best I can with what I have, I’m looking for recommendations as I’m in need of some new underwear, camisoles, and other basics as my current ones have worn out.

I’ve seen the brand Pact on social media and their clothes look nice, and as far as I can tell are about as sustainable as you can get, but I can’t tell if I’m just being sold very good greenwashing. I know of a couple of other brands based in the UK but they don’t seem to do the specific basics I’m looking for. Any recommendations of sustainable, preferably UK or Europe based brands that do underwear, socks, camis, etc would be appreciated!

Launching a Women’s Office Trouser Brand – How Do I Address Ethical Sourcing Concerns?

I am starting to make headway in launching my own women's business wear brand, specifically women's work pants. I always felt that there were not enough comfortable ladies office trousers after sitting in them for 20 years and they chafed my inner thighs and pinched me in all the wrong places.

Alot of them also didnt look great, I may have had like 2 pairs that flattered my hips and tummy but it's hard to get through a whole work week with just a few pairs of pants isn't it? So I thought okay I am going to pick one product and go for it.

Here's the problem I am getting a lot of pushback about sourcing. I mentioned that I would obviously be sourcing from wholesale sites in order to make sure the pants are affordable for everyone. The only problem is that whenever I mentioned Alibaba, Amazon, or AliExpress I am labelled with using unethical practices, or child labor and this is just not true.

I am not defending these companies but there are thousands of suppliers listed on their site, I am sure not all of them is guilty of this. So I wanted to ask advice concerning this keeping in mind a majority of apparel comes from China and I am sure many US retailers are well aware of the what kind ethical practices their suppliers are using, and I am in the process of vetting and using one as well.

But how do I get over this general misperception that anything that is sourced from China is inferior quality or made with child labor? This reaction honestly surprised me. I do want to priortize ethical sourcing requirements and making sure that suppliers are paying staff equal and decent wages, and that the quality of the fabric is better than what is available in US retail stores. How do I address these concerns without coming across defensive? How do other ethical fashion brands balance affordability and transparency?

Looking for a 1-year affordable Master’s in Sustainability (preferably online or in Europe)

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on good Master’s programs in Sustainability that last a maximum of 1 year and aren’t too expensive.

I’ve been working in fashion as an Assistant Buyer for 5 years, and over the last year I’ve been focusing on sustainability. I’ve also started taking freestanding courses on textiles and recycling at the University of Borås. Now I’d like to pursue a more complete education with a Master’s that includes both practical and theoretical aspects — ideally with courses in ESG or sustainability reporting.

I’m still figuring out whether I’d like to focus more on the practical side of sustainable production or the analytical/reporting side, but since my background is in the humanities, I feel the production side might be more challenging for me.

If you know of good programs (especially online or based in Europe/Italy), I’d love to hear your suggestions!

Advice on questions to ask about kinds of material used for nursing bras?

I am about launch a line of nursing bras for women that are not available in retail platforms. It would be at a price point that women could buy multiple pairs without breaking the bank.

So here's the deal, I know that many people are going to say that this is naive or that I have no idea what I am talking about. But I have actually been a mother who had to buy one of these to feed my baby and I also work in a NICU and see so many mothers who struggle to meet ends meet and just use regular bras that do not have support or features to prevent leakage.

I guess if you have never breastfeed you wouldn't get it. I want a comfortable, affordable ones including front open bras with nipple covers for added protection. I feel that this maybe something that many retailers miss out on. So here is the challenge, I need to use fabrics that are safe for baby and mother both. But really for baby.

Because the item will be touching the mothers skin and so it has to be something that does not transfer any sort of chemical residue to the baby's mouth. I think this is self explanatory. So if I am sourcing in wholesale amounts from a site like Alibaba, or AliExpress which I probably won't, but I am doing suppleir research right now, so I will be exploring this avenue.

What kind of questions besides the obviously should I be asking. For example, I know I need to ask about certifications like OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and GOTS for organic cotton. And something called REAH complicance but for someone who has worked with overseas suppliers what is the norm when it comes to chemical finishes, dyes, and certifications?

For people who have sourced items like these from abroad what kind of details did you ask?

the thread problem

do you that more than 99% of clothing you have in your wardrobe has some types of synthetic ingridients. starting by the thread the single pieces are sewn with together, to interfacings, label tags or washtags. its just all polyester, because its so easy to source, cheap and available. almost no brand is aware of that or willing to change this fact. during my time at fashion school i experienced how hard it is to source natural ingridients, to produce a fully degradable/compostable piece of clothing. in my early career in the fashion industry i experienced how less the companies care even though they're labeled as the good guys and the caring brands. i just wanted to share this small but still unsustainable problem with you.

but me and my wife saw a chance and started a business out of this, where we 100% make sure to only use all components naturally only. we'd love to spread this idea. so if you're in a position of power, rethink some of your components and ask yourself whether they have to be on this planet for the next thousand years.

where to buy plus size clothes?

hi all! i (19m) am trying to buy more sustainably as I finally feel like I'm at a place where I can afford it. I'm a big fan of thrifting but also prefer to shop online, which is where I've had my troubles. im 5'10, US size 2xL and 44x30, and have a lot of trouble finding handmade clothing in my size, much less vintage/second hand online. I've tried places like depop and etsy but especially with the latter I'm worried about drop shipping and ai listings and the like. I've tried to research on my own and looked at many "best places to buy men's plus size sustainable clothing" articles... yada yada. all of them seem to have a brand or two that put me off (one of them had Levi's which, last time I checked, had a looot of affiliation with child labor factories last time I checked) and make me not trust the rest of the sites on the list. does anyone have good recommendations for sites, or even what to look out for on places like eBay/Etsy/depop to avoid fake listings? thank you!

I’m tired

Was not sure how to tag this as I don’t think the question has an answer, but hey ho.

I’m so tired of trying to do the “right thing” while our efforts are wasted by the government’s failure to take net 0 seriously, the prevalence of fast fashion even now that we know how damaging it is, etc.

I knit and crochet, and am in need of some nice sweaters for fall/winter/early spring as my wardrobe is pretty much just t-shirts and hoodies and I’d like to have some nicer looking outfits and generally dress better, especially as I’ve lost some weight and am swimming in some of my clothes. I went online looking for natural fiber yarns to make some, thinking I was doing a great thing. Some lovely folks over on the Yarn Addicts sub have been giving me recommendations for good fiber blends, what to avoid, etc.

Turns out, not being made of plastic isn’t enough. Superwash wool (which most widely available wool yarns are) is coated in plastic and chemicals as part of the process for smoothing the fiber. The dyes are apparently also not eco friendly. Cotton, bamboo, etc are apparently also terrible due to water consumed during their growing and making. And to top it off, when I do find a fiber I can use, it’s sourced from Peru, or the US or Canada, so even if the yarn was insanely carbon-negative and could cure world pollution if you used enough, it then has to be shipped to where I live (UK), by plane, which is a huge carbon footprint.

I thought of buying secondhand, which I do for lots of clothes anyway. The apps I use are full of people selling plastic crap clothes from grocery stores, Temu, SHEIN, Primark, etc. And so brings a second conundrum—do I buy a sweater secondhand so that it can be shipped to me via a delivery van belching out gas fumes and shed microplastics into the earth every time I wear or wash it, or do I pass on it knowing that the exact amount of plastic will end up in a landfill anyway because it will inevitably be thrown out (or donated and then thrown out)?

Do I NEED new sweaters? Probably not; I’m not going to die if my clothes are too big and I look like a slob, and the 2 cardigans I do have are functional even if they’ve seen better days. But man is it frustrating to try your hardest to fill a gap in your wardrobe the best way you can, and to know that whatever you do short of laying down and dying, you’re putting another nail in the coffin of the earth.

How do you guys do this without genuinely getting depressed? I get the perfect is the enemy of good but it also feels like none of the choices are good? How are we making 100% sustainable choices in this kind of environment?

Hey r/Sustainability, Just a quick post about something that's made a big difference in my own sustainable fashion journey: switching to organic cotton. We all know conventional cotton is tough on the planet. It's one of the most pesticide-heavy crops, pollutes waterways, and can degrade soil over time. Organic cotton is the better choice. It's grown without harmful pesticides and relies on natural farming methods that build healthier soil. This helps the land, protects farmers, and ultimately means a cleaner product for us. When you're shopping, look for the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. It's the best way to know the cotton is truly organic and ethically sourced. It's a small change, but it makes a huge difference. What are your thoughts on organic cotton, and are there any other certifications you swear by?

Has anyone used Apliiq for low-quantity custom clothing or relabeling?

I’ve been exploring ways to add unique touches to clothes I already own or thrift, without having to start from scratch or contribute to overproduction. I recently tried using a woven label I designed through Apliiq they let you order in small batches, which felt more aligned with a lower-waste approach. I hand-stitched the label into a vintage denim jacket I repaired, and I’m thinking about trying one of their patches next. Best way to update wardrobe on a budget and sustainable?

I am currently in the process of getting to a healthier weight for my body. I have clothes that no longer fit me and slowly going to run out of clothes I can wear because they will be too big. I'm going to need to get clothes that fit me and make space for those clothes in my closet. I'm also on a budget and would love a way to do this without insane costs.

I have used Plato's Closet and Goodwill's near me and have had a bit of luck, but they are a far drive and I live in a tourist town so most of the clothes are for the tourist locations near me. I would love more options and something a bit more convenient so I'm not driving so much to shop sustainable.

Is my body meant for fast fashion?

In the last year, I received a substantial salary increase and told myself that I’m going to be more mindful of what I purchase and avoid fast fashion. But it is SO hard to shop - I have a larger chest, tapered waist, rounder stomach, etc. and I feel like most ‘quality’ or ‘sustainable’ clothing is meant for women with small chests. I’ve shopped from so many sustainable brands and I have to size up 2-3 sizes just for a top or sweater to fit my chest, but then it’s loose and baggy everywhere else. Sure I could tailor everything, but that gets expensive too.

But when I order from commense or H&M and some Zara, it fits. It fits the first time and in my normal size. I don’t have to play a mental game of taking it to the tailor, my clothes still last me at least a few years, and I psychologically feel better knowing I can fit into normal clothing.

Does anyone else feel like this? Any brands that cater to a larger cup size in a smaller frame?

I am currently doing some early customer research for a sustainable fashion startup idea and would love your honest thoughts.

The concept is broadly around a curated platform that mixes designer secondhand/resale with subscription-based access to clothing.. The goal is to make it easier to refresh your wardrobe and access pieces for special occasions and events in a sustainable way, without relying on fast fashion or constantly buying new pieces.

A few questions I’d be grateful to get insights on:

1. Would you personally be interested in a model where you could mix owning and rotating clothes?
2. What type of clothing would you want to see in such a service? (e.g. everyday staples, workwear, occasion wear)
3. What price range would feel reasonable for a monthly subscription?

H&M fake selvedge

Just walking around some shops with my partner and stumbled into H&M. Completely skeptical of finding anything of value in here, but then I saw some jeans out of the corner of my eye. 

From a first glance I was completely shocked. Selvedge jeans at H&M? No way.

I go over to inspect and think this doesn’t look quite right. I’m not well versed in garment production to know exactly what’s wrong but have handled enough decent quality jeans to know that something isn’t right.

Then I turn up the jeans and I thought - these absolute fuckers are faking selvedge jeans?! 

I want to say that I’m surprised but honestly, I’m not. It’s obvious they can see the trend in people preferring high quality clothing / buying second hand etc and they’re trying to get in on it in the most fast fashion way possible.

Namarie Sylvendel Micro-plasctic Free??

There are too many red flags with this brand. They haven’t shown any certification for their “plastic-free / microplastic-free” claims. Reviews on Trustpilot are very poor, comments asking questions often disappear, and people report being blocked when they ask for proof. I also saw posts about the owner/CEO that were concerning, and even more discussion about him on forums.

On a personal note, I lost money with them. I didn’t like the leggings, the new fabric feels cheap, slides down so I had to keep pulling it up, and it’s not good for performance. I returned them, they received the package, but I never got a refund. Because the purchase was months ago, I couldn’t even do a chargeback.

How can a brand keep selling like this, making big claims with no proof, while ignoring customers? If we hold big brands accountable for shady practices, we should hold greenwashers accountable too.

Looking for a coat - fashion advice

Hi!

I’m new here - so unsure how everything works - but I’m looking for advice!

I have been looking for a coat from sustainable materials, a long coat from sustainable materials, preferably no types of plastic. However, I can’t find one that is completely suited to what I like.

The best one I found so far is the Alma coat from Samsoe Samsoe, the issue is that it is either brown or black. But cool & softer tones suit me best, preferably greytones with a little bit of blue/green. (it is also slightly too expensive, I’m trying to find something under 350€). Finding second hand would be idea, but I have found this to be difficult as I don’t enjoy shopping that much.

Does anybody have a coat or a shop they would recommend me? Any tips on material/shops would be more than appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

A new slow-fashion brand?

Hey everyone 👋

I’m not here to sell anything — just genuinely looking for advice and perspective from this community.

Context: My background is in finance and accounting, and today I work as a finance manager. I have no experience in fashion design or manufacturing but I truly enjoy clothes and style, and I’m willing to put in the work to learn.

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly frustrated with the greenwashing I see in fashion: - Brands charging premiums for synthetics. - Weekly drops claiming slow fashion values. - An overall lack of authenticity.

My French closet is mass-manufactured neutrals (and expensive), while my Indian closet is colorful, tailored, and relatively more affordable. That divide really made me think: why should I have two different identities in my wardrobe when I’m the same person?

That’s what sparked the idea for my brand: 1. Slow fashion values: timeless pieces made of 100% natural materials built to last. 2. Parisian style: feminine, elegant silhouettes that flatter, not trends. 3. Cultural bridge: celebrating Indian craftsmanship (fair wages, centuries-old techniques) reinterpreted for a modern, global audience.

Why Is It So Hard to Find Stylish Shoes for Wide Feet?

I’ve always wondered why the shoe industry ignores people with wide feet, especially women. Most stores carry the same narrow sizing, and if you do find wide options, they look outdated or cheap. I’m in my mid-30s now, and comfort matters more than ever but I don’t want to give up style either.

Recently, I came across Wydr which actually designs shoes specifically for plus-size and wide-footed women. Their stuff isn’t bargain-bin cheap (most pairs are $100+), but the quality and fit seem to justify it.

What Merino products do you want?

Hey Fam, I am the founder of Australian brand McIntyre Merino and I thought it would be fun (maybe also stupid) to ask the community what products they are looking for in Merino wool?

Full disclosure the sampling & production process is very long so we wont be taking suggestions and making the products straight away, but your requests will definately be heard and we will consider each one.

Another point. We are not an outdoor brand, and focus more on everyday premium merino clothes - like clothes you can wear to the office, travel overseas etc.

Merino Wool

So polyester and nylon and rayon are all bad. On my quest to have only natural fiber clothing, I am stumped my merino wool. A lot of the brands I find are mixed with nylon. For bras the organic cotton works but for undies I was looking at au naturals seamless merino wool undies but they have nylon. Can anyone recommend good brands or tips on moving into natural fibers. Also I live in a very hot / humid state and I love to hike, bike and run so I sweat a lot. Advice on how to make sure my clothes don’t stink is much appreciated.

[EU] work shirts that don’t wrinkle easily & thick enough for no-bra days?

Hello everyone :) I would like recommendations for formal or smart women shirts. I can lift heavy at the gym but somehow bras and backpacks hurt my neck, shoulders and back. Flat-chested with pecs so braless is more comfortable.

EU-based brands would be great (Scandinavia counts)!

I have tried thrifting but I cannot find anything small enough (I wear a size XS to S and I am petite) or without overly long arms.

Men vs women’s fashion over the years

Hellow there! I thought this would be a good place to start a conversation on something that I can’t quite get an answer to:

Women’s fashion and the speed in which women’s clothing becomes outdated!

Simple case study: we are quite sustainable in our household especially with clothes and shoes. My fiancé still wears clothes he had for years (I mean even 10 years!). In his t-shirts, shirts and jeans he doesn’t look outdated, still fashionable. While I grab a 5 year old t-shirt I found, I look out of fashion already. The fits and silhouettes even of an exemplary trench coat (the so-called classic never-out-of-fashion wardrobe staple) changes! Why is that? I am aware women are bombarded with many new fashion trends in short amount of time. Ultra fast fashion is ruthless.
